The details depend on whether you have a freestanding bidet, handheld sprayer, non-electric attachment, or electric bidet seat.
This guide covers all four types, including temperature and pressure control, front-to-back washing, drying, cleaning, and the most common problems for first-time users. Controls such as Wash, Stop, and Dry are common on some electric seats, but your model’s owner manual is the authority because buttons and menus are not universal.

First, identify the type of bidet
Before turning anything on, look at the fixture. The correct operating position and controls depend on the design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|---|---|
| Freestanding bidet | A separate, low basin beside the toilet | Faucet or jet controls on the basin | No; dry with toilet paper or a clean towel |
| Handheld sprayer | A spray wand mounted beside the toilet | Shut-off valve and trigger on the handle | No |
| Non-electric toilet attachment | A thin attachment installed under the toilet seat | Dial, lever, or control knob | No |
| Electric bidet seat or integrated toilet | A powered seat or toilet with a remote or side panel | Remote, side controls, or both | Some models have a warm-air dryer |
For installation or remodeling work, also confirm that the fixture has the correct water connection, an accessible shut-off valve, and—when required by the model and local code—a suitable nearby electrical receptacle. Operating instructions do not replace the manufacturer’s installation instructions or local plumbing and electrical requirements.

How to use a bidet: the 10 steps
1. Use the toilet first
A bidet washes you; it is not a substitute for a toilet. Use the toilet normally before moving to the washing stage. On a freestanding basin, never place solid waste or toilet paper into the bidet because it is not designed to flush it.
A light pre-wipe can be useful the first few times or when solid residue remains. It is not an absolute requirement for every bidet. A strong, correctly aimed wash may handle the cleaning without a pre-wipe, while a gentle attachment may work better after one.
Home Depot’s bidet guidance also distinguishes the toilet from the separate washing fixture.
2. Move clothing completely out of the spray path
Lower underwear and pants far enough that they cannot block the nozzle or spray. Move long, loose shirts, robes, or other fabric away from the bowl and controls. Clothing left in the spray path is a common reason for a wet waistband or an unexpected splash.
Clothing clear → user positioned → spray aimed into bowl
3. Sit or position yourself correctly
For an electric seat or toilet-mounted attachment: sit fully on the seat. Many models use an occupancy sensor, and the nozzle is designed to operate with a seated user. Hovering can prevent the spray from starting, misalign the stream, or let water splash outside the bowl.
For a freestanding bidet: sit on the basin according to its design and your intended wash area. Facing the faucet generally gives more control for front washing; facing away is often more convenient for rear washing. Check the fixture’s shape and instructions rather than assuming one direction is mandatory.

For a handheld sprayer: remain seated on the toilet or position the wand carefully over the bowl. Keep the nozzle aimed downward before squeezing the trigger.

4. Find the controls and test the water before aiming it at yourself
Locate the water, pressure, temperature, position, and stop controls before starting. On many electric seats, the documented labels include:

- Wash: starts the cleansing spray and may extend the nozzle.
- Stop: ends the spray; some models then retract and rinse the nozzle.
- Dry: starts the warm-air dryer when the seat has one.
These labels are not universal. Some products use icons, a dial, a side panel, or a remote with separate rear and front wash buttons. Brondell’s operating example documents the Wash, Stop, and Dry sequence for its products, but your current model manual takes precedence.

If the manufacturer permits it, you can briefly test an electric spray over the bowl before sitting. Do not defeat an occupancy sensor or reach into a moving nozzle unless the manual specifically describes a safe test procedure.
5. Start with low water pressure
Begin gently. Increasing pressure is easy; recovering from an unexpectedly forceful spray is not.
- Electric seat: press the wash control at its lowest pressure setting, if available.
- Handheld sprayer: open the shut-off valve only as far as needed and squeeze the trigger lightly. Some sprayers deliver strong pressure immediately.
- Non-electric attachment: turn the dial or lever gradually.
- Freestanding bidet: open the faucet or jet control slowly.
Test the temperature before directing the water at sensitive tissue. Manual fixtures may connect to hot and cold supplies, while electric seats may need a short period to heat water internally. Avoid water that feels hot or uncomfortably cold.
6. Select the wash mode and adjust the aim
Use the setting that matches the area being washed. Electric models may call their settings rear, posterior, front, or feminine; terminology varies. Adjust nozzle position, spray width, temperature, and pressure only when those controls are available.

For vulvar washing, direct the stream from front to back, not from back to front. This helps avoid moving contaminants toward the urethra or vagina. Water alone is generally sufficient for ordinary external cleansing; do not add soap to the nozzle, reservoir, or spray unless the manufacturer specifically requires a compatible product. Soap can irritate sensitive tissue.
For a handheld wand, point the nozzle downward into the bowl and make small adjustments. If the stream hits the back of the toilet, rim, seat, or floor, stop and reposition before increasing pressure.
Low pressure → downward aim → front-to-back direction when washing the vulva
7. Rinse until clean
There is no single correct wash time. Many consumer instructions describe a typical rinse of approximately 20 to 60 seconds, but the needed time depends on pressure, nozzle position, the amount of residue, and the particular fixture.
Use the minimum comfortable pressure and duration that leaves you clean. If necessary, stop, make a small nozzle or position adjustment, and run another short rinse. Do not continue indefinitely simply because a timer or number found online says you should.

8. Stop the water safely
End the spray before changing position or reaching for a towel.
- Electric seat: press Stop or the equivalent control. On some models, the nozzle retracts after a self-cleaning cycle.
- Handheld sprayer: release the trigger completely.
- Attachment: return the dial or lever to its off position.
- Freestanding bidet: close the faucet or jet control.
Never assume that releasing a handheld trigger is the same as shutting off the supply valve. The trigger stops the spray at the wand; the valve controls pressure in the hose.
9. Dry yourself
A bidet cleans with water but does not always dry. Pat dry with a small amount of toilet paper, a clean designated towel, or another clean drying method. Avoid vigorous rubbing, particularly if the skin is irritated.
If your electric seat has a Dry function, activate it after the wash. Warm-air drying can take several minutes and may not leave the same dry finish as patting with paper or a towel. Non-electric attachments, handheld sprayers, and most freestanding bidets do not include a built-in dryer.
10. Shut off external water, clean as directed, and wash your hands
After using a handheld sprayer or some non-electric attachments:
- Confirm that the trigger or spray control is released.
- Return the wand to its holder.
- Close the external shut-off valve or T-valve if your installation has one.
- Check briefly for drips around the hose, valve, and connection.
- Wash your hands.
Leaving an external valve pressurized can contribute to leaks or component failure. Healthline recommends turning off an attachment’s T-valve after use, and Home Depot gives similar advice for handheld shut-off valves.
Clean the seat, basin, nozzle area, and external surfaces according to the product manual. Do not assume an automatic nozzle rinse makes the whole fixture self-cleaning. For example, Kohler’s cleaning guidance recommends approved cleaning products and nonabrasive tools and advises disconnecting the water supply before cleaning internal components such as a filter screen. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, and unapproved chemicals that can damage finishes or seals.
What to do when something goes wrong
Water sprays outside the bowl
- Stop the spray immediately.
- Sit fully on a toilet-mounted seat instead of hovering.
- For a handheld wand, aim downward and keep the nozzle inside the bowl area.
- Restart with a light trigger squeeze or the lowest pressure.
- Check whether the nozzle position or spray width is adjustable.
Hovering, aiming too high, and opening the water too far are the most likely causes. If water continues escaping despite correct positioning, stop using the fixture and inspect the installation for a loose connection or damaged seal.
The attachment leaks after use
First release the trigger and close the external shut-off or T-valve. If the leak stops, the line may simply have been left pressurized. If it continues, do not overtighten fittings or continue operating the sprayer; inspect washers, threaded connections, the hose, and the valve, following the installation manual. Replace damaged parts before use.
The water is unexpectedly cold or hot
Stop and test the temperature away from your body. Manual fixtures may need careful balancing of hot and cold controls. An electric model may pause while its internal heater warms. Do not continue if the water is too hot, and do not assume the temperature control has the same range or behavior as another brand.

The electric seat will not spray
Check that:
- The seat has power.
- The water supply valve is open.
- You are seated fully enough to activate the occupancy sensor.
- The child lock, pause setting, or remote lock is not enabled.
- The nozzle is not obstructed and the filter is not due for service.
Some models will not operate while empty. Only test the spray with your hand over the bowl if the manufacturer explicitly permits that method. Otherwise, use the manual’s troubleshooting procedure.
You expected a dryer but there is none
Check the model specifications and control panel. A freestanding basin, handheld sprayer, and non-electric attachment normally require manual drying. Use toilet paper, a designated clean towel, or another hygienic method.
Hygiene and health: what the evidence does—and does not—say
A bidet can be a practical way to rinse after using the toilet, but it should not be described as automatically infection-preventing or medically superior to toilet paper. Available research is limited, and reporting has raised questions about contamination and possible changes in vaginal flora with some warm-water bidet use. See the Associated Press review of the available evidence and Healthline’s discussion of bidet hygiene.
Practical precautions are straightforward: use clean water, avoid directing spray from back to front when washing the vulva, keep the nozzle and seat clean, do not share a damp personal towel, and stop if the water causes pain or irritation. Persistent irritation, bleeding, pain, discharge, or urinary symptoms should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional rather than treated by changing bidet settings alone.
Are bidets automatically better for the environment?
Not necessarily. A fair comparison includes toilet-paper production and disposal, bidet water consumption, electricity for heated seats or water, manufacturing, product lifespan, and the energy and water mix where you live. A simple non-electric attachment may have a different footprint from a heated electric seat, and local conditions change the result. AP’s reporting cautions against treating environmental superiority as an automatic property of every bidet.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to wipe before using a bidet?
Not always. A light pre-wipe can reduce mess when solid residue remains or when you are learning to use the fixture, but it is not a universal requirement. The bidet’s pressure, nozzle position, and design determine how much cleaning it can do.
Should I use soap with a bidet?
Usually no. Water is generally sufficient for ordinary external cleansing. Do not add soap to the spray or nozzle unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to use a compatible product, because soap may irritate sensitive tissue.
How long should I use a bidet?
There is no universal duration. Consumer instructions commonly describe approximately 20–60 seconds, but use the lowest comfortable pressure and rinse only until clean. You may stop and make a small position adjustment if needed.
Why does my bidet spray water outside the bowl?
You may be hovering, the handheld wand may be aimed too high, or the pressure may be too strong. Sit fully on a toilet-mounted seat, aim a handheld nozzle downward, and restart at low pressure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do all bidets have warm-air dryers?
No. Warm-air drying is generally limited to electric seats or integrated toilets that include a dryer. Handheld sprayers, non-electric attachments, and most freestanding bidets require manual drying.
The Bottom Line
Use the toilet first, position yourself fully and correctly, start with gentle water pressure, adjust the aim and temperature, rinse until clean, dry, and shut off any external valve. Keep the nozzle and seat clean, and follow your specific model’s manual whenever its controls or cleaning requirements differ from this general sequence.
