The best-value home audio upgrade is usually not a premium cable, DAC, or new receiver. First fix speaker placement, TV settings, seating position, and calibration. Then spend on the weakest part of the system: a soundbar for clearer TV dialogue, stereo speakers for better music, a subwoofer for genuinely missing bass, or an AV receiver only when you need surround sound, additional inputs, or newer video formats.

The most economical approach is staged: optimize what you own, upgrade the front soundstage, add bass only if necessary, and add surround or height speakers last.

Start by identifying the actual problem

“Better sound” can mean several different things. Decide which result matters most before buying equipment.

What you notice Most likely first move
Muffled or quiet dialogue Improve placement and settings; then consider dialogue enhancement, a better soundbar, or a center channel.
Thin TV sound Choose a soundbar or powered stereo speakers.
Music sounds harsh or small Improve the left and right speakers, their placement, or the amplifier-speaker match.
Weak or boomy bass Correct placement and calibration before buying a subwoofer.
No stereo image Use two properly separated speakers rather than relying on TV speakers or a narrow soundbar.
No surround immersion Consider a soundbar system with satellites or an AV receiver and separate speakers.
Audio cuts out or will not control from the TV remote Check HDMI ARC/eARC, HDMI-CEC, cables, and output-format settings.

A soundbar may be the most practical movie upgrade, while a two-channel system may deliver better music for the money. Neither is universally better.

Place speakers and seating correctly

For stereo, place the speakers and main listening seat approximately as an equilateral triangle. Put tweeters near ear height and angle the speakers slightly toward the listening position if needed. Keep the speakers away from obstructions and experiment with distance from the wall.

Small seating changes can transform bass. Avoid putting the main seat directly against a wall or exactly at the center of a rectangular room when possible. If several people watch from different positions, prioritize a broad, even presentation over perfect sound at one seat.

For a soundbar, center it below or near the TV. Do not block front, side-firing, or upward-firing drivers. An Atmos soundbar should not be placed inside a cabinet that obstructs its ceiling-reflection path. Dolby recommends keeping an upward-firing soundbar no higher than approximately halfway up the wall. See Dolby’s soundbar setup guidance.

Check the TV output

Menu names vary by television, but look for settings such as Digital Audio Output, Audio Format, or eARC Mode.

  • Use Pass-through or Bitstream when a soundbar or receiver supports the source’s surround format.
  • Use PCM or Stereo PCM for a stereo amplifier that cannot decode Dolby Digital or DTS.
  • Disable the TV’s internal speakers when required.
  • Enable HDMI-CEC if you want the TV remote to control volume and power.
  • Turn off artificial sound modes while evaluating the system.

Run the soundbar or receiver’s room-calibration process after placement. Recalibrate after moving furniture, speakers, or the main seat. Room correction can compensate for some reflections and frequency imbalances, but it cannot overcome blocked drivers or inadequate hardware. Dolby’s home-theater setup guide explains the importance of geometry, clear sound paths, seating, and calibration.

Choose the right upgrade path

Soundbar: best for TV-first households

A soundbar is usually the simplest improvement over TV speakers. It suits renters, small rooms, minimal wiring, and viewers who want TV-remote integration. Depending on the model, it may include a subwoofer, wireless surround speakers, room correction, dialogue enhancement, or Dolby Atmos support.

Its compromises are physical. A bar cannot separate left and right channels as widely as speakers placed across a room. Virtual or reflected surround effects depend on wall and ceiling geometry, and an Atmos label does not guarantee obvious height effects. A soundbar may also be less satisfying for dedicated stereo music.

As planning ranges, under $200 generally means a basic dialogue and loudness upgrade; $200–$500 offers a better chance of a subwoofer, room correction, or surround expansion. Above $500 can make sense for stronger bass, ecosystem expansion, or better processing, but price alone does not guarantee better sound. Independent comparisons such as RTINGS’ under-$300 coverage and under-$500 coverage illustrate the trade-offs among room size, format support, satellites, subwoofers, and room correction.

Powered stereo speakers: compact and music-friendly

Powered speakers contain their own amplifier, so they avoid the cost and clutter of a separate receiver. They can provide a wider, more convincing stereo image than many similarly priced soundbars.

For TV use, verify the exact model has HDMI ARC or at least optical input. For music, look for Bluetooth or Wi-Fi streaming, a remote, tone controls or room correction, and a subwoofer output if you may add bass later. Many desktop-oriented powered speakers lack HDMI ARC, TV-remote learning, or a subwoofer output.

This route does not provide true rear or height channels. It is best when music and a strong front soundstage matter more than surround effects.

Passive bookshelf speakers plus a streaming amplifier

This is often the strongest long-term value for music and staged upgrades. You can reuse suitable old speakers, replace the amplifier later, or change speakers without replacing the entire system.

For example, the manufacturer listed the WiiM Amp at $299 in the U.S. when observed on August 18, 2026. It includes HDMI ARC, optical and line inputs, streaming, room correction, a subwoofer output, and a listed 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms. It is a stereo product: its listed formats do not include Dolby Digital or DTS. A TV connected to it should therefore be set to stereo PCM.

The WiiM Amp also has no built-in phono input. A turntable requires its own phono preamp or an external phono stage. The amplifier is a useful example of what to check—not a universal recommendation. Confirm current specifications before purchasing.

  • 【Smart Standby Mode】The soundbar's red indicator light indicates safe standby mode. It consumes minimal power and will not affect the product's lifespan. You do not need to unplug it when not in use.

The lower-cost WiiM Mini was listed at $89 on the same date. It adds Wi-Fi streaming to equipment that already has an amplifier or powered input, but it does not power passive speakers and is not a complete TV-audio solution.

AV receiver and separate speakers: best for genuine surround

Choose an AV receiver when you want a real center channel, rear speakers, height channels, multiple sources, gaming inputs, and future expansion. It is more flexible than a soundbar but requires more space, cables, setup, ventilation, and attention to compatibility.

Do not replace a receiver automatically. A good receiver paired with weak speakers may sound worse than a well-chosen stereo system. Replace it when the current model lacks a required HDMI connection, video pass-through capability, power, room correction, or audio format.

HDMI 2.1 matters when the receiver must pass compatible high-bandwidth video from equipment such as some current consoles or gaming PCs. It is not required for every TV-audio setup. Dolby’s receiver and home-theater guidance is useful when planning a multichannel system.

What to upgrade first in common systems

If you use TV speakers

Buy a soundbar for the simplest movie and dialogue improvement, powered stereo speakers for stronger music and stereo separation, or an amplifier plus passive speakers if you already own suitable speakers.

If you already own a soundbar

Before replacing it, clear the bar’s drivers, confirm the TV is not outputting stereo unnecessarily, enable dialogue enhancement, check the subwoofer position, and run room correction if available. Upgrade only when the bar lacks the width, bass, volume, format support, or expansion you actually need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you have a receiver and speakers

Upgrade the weakest audible component. A center speaker is the logical first purchase for unclear dialogue; a subwoofer addresses missing bass; front left and right speakers matter most for music and overall tonal quality. Replace the receiver only for a specific connection, format, power, or calibration requirement.

If you inherited passive speakers

Reuse them if the drivers work, foam surrounds have not deteriorated, cabinets are intact, and impedance is within the amplifier’s supported range. Test every driver at moderate volume. Compact home-theater-in-a-box speakers may use unusual impedance, proprietary connectors, or a receiver-specific design, so do not connect them blindly to a new amplifier.

Budget upgrade plans

$0–$50: optimize before shopping

  • Reposition speakers or the soundbar.
  • Move the listening seat.
  • Correct the TV’s output format.
  • Run calibration.
  • Reduce excessive bass or surround processing.
  • Replace a damaged cable only when it is causing a connection problem.

Premium HDMI and speaker cables are not sensible first upgrades for a normal short installation.

$50–$200: solve one obvious limitation

Consider speaker stands, wall brackets, a basic soundbar, used bookshelf speakers, a streamer for an existing amplifier, or a compatible used subwoofer. When buying used, test every driver, input, remote, wireless function, and power supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

$200–$500: commit to a complete direction

This range can cover a better soundbar, powered stereo speakers, a used receiver with existing speakers, or a streaming amplifier such as the WiiM Amp plus speakers you already own. If you need passive speakers too, remember that the amplifier price is only part of the system cost.

$500–$800: expand selectively

Use this budget for a better soundbar system with wireless surrounds, a stronger stereo amplifier and bookshelf speakers, a receiver with a capable front three-channel package, or a quality subwoofer for an existing stereo system. Avoid spending the whole amount on a receiver while keeping weak speakers.

Connect everything correctly

HDMI ARC and eARC

Connect the soundbar or amplifier to the TV port labeled ARC, eARC, or ARC/eARC. A normal HDMI input will not return TV audio to the audio device. Enable HDMI-CEC for remote control. The complete chain is limited by the older device: an eARC television does not make an ARC-only soundbar support eARC formats.

If there is no sound:

  1. Confirm the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
  2. Select the soundbar or amplifier as the TV audio output.
  3. Power-cycle both devices.
  4. Enable HDMI-CEC.
  5. Set the TV output to PCM.
  6. Try another known-good HDMI cable.
  7. Test optical output.
  8. Check firmware and model-specific format limitations.

Sonos’ home-theater setup guide similarly specifies the ARC/eARC port and uses an optical adapter when ARC/eARC is unavailable.

Optical, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi

Optical is a useful fallback for older TVs, but it generally provides fewer format and control capabilities than ARC/eARC. Bluetooth is convenient but may introduce latency and does not create a multichannel TV system. Wi-Fi streaming is usually better for multiroom audio, but app support, network reliability, and ecosystem compatibility matter.

Turntables

A turntable must provide line-level output through a built-in phono preamp, or connect to an external phono stage before entering a line input. A normal phono signal cannot be connected directly to every amplifier.

Add a subwoofer only when bass is the problem

A subwoofer can add impact and scale, but it cannot repair unclear dialogue, blocked soundbar drivers, distorted main speakers, or a system without a compatible subwoofer output or wireless pairing method.

  1. Place the subwoofer temporarily at the main listening position.
  2. Play familiar bass-heavy material or a slow bass sweep.
  3. Walk around the room and find locations with smoother bass.
  4. Move the subwoofer to one of those locations.
  5. Run room correction.
  6. Set level and crossover conservatively.
  7. Listen for boom, localization, and neighbor disturbance.

Bass is comparatively non-directional, so a subwoofer has more placement flexibility than a main speaker, but room modes still matter. Dolby discusses subwoofer placement and calibration in its Atmos speaker setup guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match speakers and amplifiers sensibly

Check nominal and minimum impedance, speaker sensitivity, amplifier power, room size, listening distance, and expected volume. Do not match wattage numbers mechanically. A modest amplifier can work well with reasonably sensitive speakers in a small room, while a large room, low-sensitivity speakers, or loud listening requires more headroom.

The WiiM Amp lists support for 4-, 6-, and 8-ohm speakers, but that does not mean every speaker is an equally easy load. Verify the exact speaker and amplifier manuals. Keep equipment ventilated and reduce the volume if you hear strain or distortion.

When buying used makes sense

Used audio equipment can stretch a $50–$800 budget, especially for passive speakers, stands, receivers, and subwoofers. Inspect cabinets and surrounds, test every driver separately, confirm all inputs work, check that the remote and power supply are included, and verify that proprietary cables or wireless modules are not missing.

For receivers and powered equipment, check HDMI behavior, fan noise, overheating, firmware support, and whether the model handles the formats and video sources you use. Savings vary with condition, shipping, local availability, and missing accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistakes that waste money

  • Buying premium cables before fixing placement or settings.
  • Buying Atmos equipment without suitable ceiling, wall, and seating geometry.
  • Adding a subwoofer before correcting bass placement and calibration.
  • Replacing the receiver before improving weak speakers.
  • Assuming all wireless products from different brands will pair together.
  • Choosing an amplifier from its wattage number alone.
  • Buying a streamer that lacks the TV input or subwoofer output you need.
  • Assuming an Atmos logo means every program contains Atmos audio or every room will produce obvious height effects.

A practical staged upgrade plan

  1. Stage 1: reposition the speakers or soundbar, adjust the TV output, move the seat, and calibrate.
  2. Stage 2: upgrade the front sound source: soundbar for convenience, stereo speakers for music, or passive speakers and an amplifier for flexibility.
  3. Stage 3: add a subwoofer only after confirming that bass remains the limitation.
  4. Stage 4: add a center, surrounds, or height speakers when genuine multichannel immersion is a priority.
  5. Stage 5: replace the receiver only when a missing connection, format, power capability, or calibration feature justifies it.

Buy the next component that solves the current bottleneck, not the component with the longest feature list. A correctly placed stereo pair can outperform a poorly positioned low-cost Atmos system, and a properly configured existing system can make a larger improvement than expensive electronics.
