Keep the profile accurate to the business, not merely to the road. If the business is open and its normal schedule has not changed, leave the regular hours in place and publish access guidance only when the route has been confirmed. If opening times change for a short period, add date-specific Special hours. If the business itself will be closed for seven or more consecutive days, is closed for an off-season, or has no known reopening date, use Temporarily closed.
These choices affect what customers see in Google Search and Maps. A nearby road closure is not, by itself, evidence that the business has stopped operating.

Choose the correct Google control first
Decide what is happening at the premises before opening the editor. The key questions are whether the business is operating, whether its hours differ on particular dates, and how long a complete closure will last. Ask the person responsible for the site to confirm the schedule rather than inferring it from a transportation notice. A road agency’s closure date and a business’s operating date may not be identical.

A road closure is not the same as a business closure
Do not select Temporarily closed simply because a road near the premises is blocked. Customers may still be able to reach the business through another entrance, from a different direction, or on foot. Marking the profile closed when staff are working can hide the business from people who could still use it and gives an inaccurate signal to customers and suppliers.

Conversely, do not leave normal hours displayed if the closure prevents the business from operating. The profile should describe the business’s real operating status, even when the original cause is public road work.
Separate three facts before editing: the condition of the road, whether customers can physically reach the site, and whether the business is staffed and serving customers. They often overlap, but they are not interchangeable. For example, a shop may remain open while a vehicle entrance is blocked, whereas a clinic may close because deliveries or emergency access are impossible even though a pedestrian route remains open.
When Special hours are the right choice
Use Special hours for temporary adjustments to particular dates. Google describes this control as suitable for short-term changes and closures of six consecutive days or fewer. It leaves the regular weekly timetable in place for all other dates, so you do not have to rebuild the normal schedule after the road work ends.
Special hours can represent a later opening time, an earlier closing time, a split change for a particular day, or a full-day closure. Select every affected date rather than relying on a general note that customers may miss. If a closure covers a weekend and part of the following week, count the consecutive calendar days, including days on which the business would normally be closed, when deciding whether the six-day threshold is met.
Use one entry per affected date. A single exception for Friday does not change Saturday, Sunday, or a later date. If the construction schedule changes, edit the affected dates again instead of changing the main weekly hours for everyone.
When Temporarily closed is the right choice
Use Temporarily closed when the business itself will not operate for seven or more consecutive days, when it closes for an off-season, or when nobody can give a reopening date. Google recommends this status for longer or indefinite closures. It appears on Search and Maps, making the operating status visible before a customer plans a visit.
If the closure begins as an uncertain interruption and later receives a confirmed reopening date, keep the status aligned with the latest verified information. Do not invent a date merely to avoid an indefinite status. Likewise, do not use a string of guessed Special-hours entries to make an uncertain shutdown look precise.
A temporary closure status does not explain why the business is closed. If road work is the reason and a useful, confirmed update exists, add that information in a post or other customer communication. The status and the explanation serve different purposes: one tells customers whether the business is operating, and the other can describe the circumstances.
Update the profile from Google Search or Maps
You need to be signed in to the Google account that manages the Business Profile. The same editing path applies whether you open the profile through Search or Maps. If more than one person manages the listing, agree on one current schedule so that separate edits do not contradict each other.
- Sign in to the managing Google account and open the business’s Business Profile on Google Search or Google Maps.
- Select Edit profile.
- Open Hours.
- Choose the control that matches the business’s actual status: Special hours for short, date-specific changes, or Temporarily closed for a qualifying longer, seasonal, or indefinite closure.
- Enter the dates or status carefully, then save the change.
- View the public profile again and check that the displayed status or date-specific hours match what customers will encounter.
Record the decision internally—the affected dates, the person who confirmed them, and any access fact that was verified. This is useful when a project manager changes the schedule or another staff member needs to maintain the profile, but it does not replace checking the live listing after saving.

Enter Special hours for changed dates
- From Edit profile, open Hours and select Special hours.
- Select each date affected by the road closure.
- Enter the adjusted opening and closing times for a day when the business will operate on a different schedule.
- Mark the date closed when the business will not open at all.
- Save the changes and check the profile’s public view.
Special hours show only on the dates you designate. The usual weekly hours continue to describe the remaining dates, which prevents a short disruption from permanently changing the standard schedule. Enter the hours the customer can actually use, not the hours employees might be present for setup or cleanup.
For a full-day closure, use the closed option for that date rather than entering a very short opening window. For a partial change, check both the opening and closing time before saving; a mistaken time can be as misleading as omitting the exception.

Mark the business Temporarily closed
- Open the profile, choose Edit profile, and go to Hours.
- Select the Temporarily closed option when the business itself meets Google’s duration, seasonal, or unknown-reopening criteria.
- Save the status.
- Check the public listing in Search and Maps to confirm that the closure is visible.
This status is for an operating closure, not a notice that the surrounding street is inconvenient. If staff remain available at the premises, continue to use operating hours or Special hours and explain the verified access arrangement instead.
Explain verified access without overpromising
An hours change can generate a confirmation message on the Business Profile and a post in the mobile Updates tab. Google says the owner can edit that post to add more information. Use it to answer the practical question customers have: how can they reach the business while the road is closed?

- Whether the business is open during the road works.
- The exact dates and times affected, when they differ from the regular schedule.
- A confirmed entrance or approach that customers may use.
- A verified change to parking, loading, pedestrian access, or site access.
- A confirmed reopening date when one exists.
- A way to contact the business if access conditions change during the work.
For example, an accurate post might state that the business remains open, identify the entrance that has been confirmed for customer use, and give the dates of the temporary schedule. It should not state that a detour is available until the business has checked it.
Keep the wording date-specific when conditions are date-specific. “Open during the project” may become false when a contractor closes the final entrance for a day, while “open June 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; use the confirmed east entrance” tells customers exactly what has been checked. Update or edit the post when that fact changes.
Do not publish an unverified route
Road works can change from one day to the next. Do not copy a rumoured diversion, rely on an old map image, or promise that a particular entrance is usable without confirmation. If access details are uncertain, publish only the operating information you can verify and omit route instructions until they are reliable. An inaccurate post can send customers into another closure and create a second problem even when the hours are correct.
Use the profile controls for the business’s actual schedule
Business open with normal hours
Leave the regular hours unchanged when the business is open and its schedule has not changed. A post can explain a confirmed approach, but changing hours to reflect a road condition would misstate when the business operates.
Business open with a temporary schedule
Use Special hours for each affected date. This is appropriate when construction access means the business opens later, closes earlier, or operates on a different pattern for a short period. Customers see the exception on the relevant date while the standard timetable remains available for ordinary weeks.
Business closed for up to six consecutive days
Enter the closure dates as Special hours. This records a short full-day closure without converting the entire profile to a longer-term closure status. If the closure is extended to seven consecutive days, reassess it and switch to Temporarily closed rather than leaving a short-closure treatment in place.
Business closed for seven or more consecutive days
Use Temporarily closed rather than entering a long run of individual exceptions. Google specifically directs businesses to that status for closures lasting seven or more days.
Business closed for a season or with no reopening date
Use Temporarily closed. An unknown duration should not be represented by guessed Special hours or an invented reopening date.

Bulk-edit several locations carefully
Businesses with multiple profiles can use Google’s bulk management tools in Business Profile Manager and spreadsheet uploads for relevant profile fields. This is useful when the same road project affects several locations, but a bulk file can change more than intended if it is prepared carelessly.
Change only the field you intend to change
In the spreadsheet’s Special hours column, an x denotes a full-day closure. Use the date-specific hours format for days when a location will operate on adjusted times. Keep the upload focused on the locations and fields that actually need changing.

Before uploading, compare the location identifiers with the current profiles. A common road name can affect different branches differently, and a shared template can accidentally apply one branch’s schedule to another. Treat each location’s operating decision as separate even when the administrative update is done in one file.
Remove empty columns before uploading
Google warns that empty columns included in a spreadsheet can erase existing information for those fields. If the task is to update Special hours, use a minimal spreadsheet rather than exporting a broad sheet and uploading it with unrelated columns left blank. Review the file for unintended blanks, confirm that each location is the intended one, and then check the public profiles after the upload.

A spreadsheet can apply a confirmed decision efficiently; it cannot decide whether a road closure means a business is closed. Determine each location’s operating status first. Locations with different access arrangements, schedules, or reopening information may need different entries.
Restore normal information when operations resume
When the business reopens, return the profile to its real ongoing schedule. Open the profile, choose Edit profile, and go to Hours. Restore or confirm the main hours, save them, and make sure the business is no longer marked Temporarily closed.
Review any Special hours that were entered for dates now past or no longer affected. Confirm that a profile post does not continue to describe an entrance, parking arrangement, or closure that has ended. The goal is for the public listing to show the normal schedule and only current access information.
If reopening is phased, use the schedule that customers can actually use at each stage. Do not restore the full normal timetable until the business can honor it. Once the final restriction ends, perform one more public-profile check so an old temporary message does not conflict with the restored hours.
Troubleshoot common mistakes
The profile says closed even though the business is open
Recheck the status under Edit profile and Hours. If the business is operating, remove Temporarily closed and use main hours or Special hours according to the current schedule. A road closure alone should not determine the profile’s operating status.
Normal hours still appear on a changed date
Confirm that the date was added under Special hours, that the correct opening and closing times were saved, and that a full-day closure was marked closed rather than left with the regular timetable. Check every affected date individually; one correctly edited date does not change the others.
A short closure was entered as a long-term closure
For a closure of six consecutive days or fewer, replace Temporarily closed with Special hours for the exact dates. This preserves the weekly schedule for the period after the interruption.
A long closure was entered as many individual dates
For seven or more consecutive days, an off-season closure, or an unknown reopening date, use Temporarily closed. Individual date entries are not the control Google recommends for those circumstances.

The access post contains an incorrect instruction
Edit the post and remove or correct the unverified route, entrance, parking statement, or reopening claim. Keep only details the business has confirmed. If no reliable access detail is available, the hours or closure status can stand without a route explanation.
A bulk upload removed profile information
Review the spreadsheet for empty columns. Google warns that blank columns can overwrite existing field values. Prepare a minimal file containing only the intended changes, then re-enter any information that was erased and verify the affected profiles.

The editing controls are not visible
First confirm that the signed-in account is the one that manages the Business Profile, then reopen the profile on Search or Maps and look for Edit profile and Hours. The available guidance establishes the editing path but does not establish every account-specific permission or interface variation, so avoid assuming that a missing control means the listing is permanently locked.
The project schedule keeps changing
Use the latest confirmed operating decision. Edit the affected Special-hours dates when the business remains open, or change the profile to Temporarily closed when the business now meets the seven-day, seasonal, or unknown-duration criteria. Remove obsolete access instructions rather than stacking contradictory posts.
