For an accessible outdoor downpipe, clear debris you can reach, inspect the lower bend and outlet, then feed a garden hose from the top and watch for water escaping at joints or onto the wall. Do not flush a suspected blockage in an internal downpipe: water could enter the building. If the pipe is high, concealed or unsafe to reach, stop and arrange a suitable inspection.
Before you start: identify the pipe and assess access
From the ground, trace the gutter outlet to the downpipe and see where it discharges: into a surface gully or into a below-ground drain. Note any section built into the structure. A concealed pipe or buried connection may need a different inspection method from an exposed outdoor pipe.
Do not work from a ladder or roof if the surface is unstable, the weather is poor, or the setup makes access unsafe. The UK Health and Safety Executive says a ladder can be reasonable for short-duration, low-risk work, but should not automatically be the first choice; see its safe-use guidance. Government of Canada guidance also advises not working alone. High or difficult-to-reach gutters may require suitable access equipment or a contractor.
Clear an accessible outdoor downpipe
- Remove reachable debris. Clear leaves and vegetation around the gutter outlet and accessible pipe opening. Gloves and a suitable scoop or trowel can help remove gutter debris without pushing it farther into the pipe.
- Inspect the lower bend and shoe. Debris can collect at the bent section or the shoe at the bottom. Check for an obstruction before flushing. Avoid forcing wire or another tool into an old, brittle or concealed pipe, where it could cause damage.
- Flush from the top with a garden hose. For an accessible outdoor pipe, feed a hose into the top to loosen debris, then confirm that water discharges freely at the bottom. The City of Gosnells describes this approach in its gutter and downpipe cleaning guide.
- Check the outlet and drain connection. If water does not emerge, or the pipe backs up, the obstruction may be in the lower bend or the below-ground drain. Do not keep forcing water into a pipe that is not draining; a drain professional may be needed if the buried connection remains blocked.
Do not use a hose to flush a suspected blockage in an internal downpipe. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns that this can send water into the building; inspect or arrange professional help instead (Moisture Control Guidance).

Check for leaks while water is flowing
Watch the pipe and nearby surfaces during the hose test. Look for water escaping from joints, connections, the shoe or the pipe itself, and check the wall behind the downpipe and the outlet area. The City of Gosnells also suggests using a bucket of water to check gutter flow. As the city advises, “Always check for blockages below a leak.” A blockage farther down can make water escape at a higher joint.
Some leaks are hard to see directly, including holes on the rear of rectangular downpipes. Look at nearby masonry and eaves for water or rust stains, persistent saturation, washed-out mortar joints, moss or algae. These are clues rather than proof of a particular fault; inspect the pipe and drainage route to locate the cause.

Choose the next step based on what you find
- Visible debris in an exposed pipe: remove what you can reach and hose-test it as described above.
- Water escaping at a joint or through a damaged pipe: the right repair depends on the material and construction. Avoid applying a generic sealant without checking whether it is suitable for that pipe and joint.
- Traditional cast-iron rainwater goods: Cadw describes a specific approach for leaking cast-iron joints involving dismantling, cleaning, de-rusting, reassembly and traditional linseed-oil putty. This is not a general repair method for plastic, modern metal or every property; see Cadw’s rainwater-disposal guidance.
- High, concealed or unresolved fault: stop if reaching or opening the system is unsafe. A qualified contractor can assess the section that cannot be checked from the ground or remains blocked after accessible debris is removed.
Do not alter where a downspout discharges or make a permanent drainage change without checking locally applicable requirements. Building provisions and drainage arrangements vary by location and by the applicable code edition; the Australian Building Codes Board provides housing guidance on gutter and downpipe provisions.
Why a blockage or leak deserves attention
Blocked or damaged rainwater goods can overflow, stain or damage eaves and soffits, and allow water into the building. Persistent damp can create conditions for decay. Pooling near the foundation is also a reason to check whether rainwater is being carried away effectively.

How often to check gutters and downpipes
Government of Canada guidance recommends checking eavestroughs and downspouts at least twice a year—in fall and spring—and more often after severe storms, heavy rain or high winds. Clear leaves and sticks and check that water can drain away. Local climate and building conditions may call for a different maintenance routine; the Canadian schedule is specific to that guidance (Eavestroughs and downspouts).
