1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSay “Alexa, hang up” first: a pulsing green light usually means an incoming call, while a spinning or cycling green light means a call or Drop In is active. There is no universal setting to switch off the green indicator; end the activity causing it, then check notifications if the light remains.
Identify what the green light means
Amazon’s light guidance distinguishes incoming calls from active calls by the light’s motion. The appearance can vary between Echo speakers, Echo Pop and Echo Show, so use the pattern as a clue rather than assuming every model looks identical.

| Light pattern | Likely meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pulsing or flashing green | An incoming call | Answer and then end the call, or use the Alexa app or Echo Show controls to handle it. |
| Spinning or cycling green | An active call or Drop In | Say “Alexa, hang up” or “Alexa, disconnect.” |
| Steady or green-looking light | Could be a lingering call or Drop In state, or a notification that looks greenish on your device | Check communications first, then ask Alexa about notifications. |
| Pulsing yellow, sometimes mistaken for green | A notification is waiting | Ask “Alexa, what are my notifications?” or “Alexa, what did I miss?” |
Amazon identifies notifications as pulsing yellow, but users have reported that the indicator can look greenish on some devices. If you are unsure, check the pattern in normal lighting and clear any active call before investigating notifications. Amazon’s support response on a green-looking notification light also suggests asking what notifications are waiting.

End the call or Drop In
- Say “Alexa, hang up.” Amazon describes this as a command for ending Alexa calls and Drop In sessions. The green light should stop when the session ends and the Echo returns to idle.
- If that does not work, say “Alexa, disconnect.” Amazon support has also recommended this command for a persistent green light.
- If the Echo is receiving a call, answer it and then say “Alexa, hang up.” You can also use the call controls in the Alexa app or, on an Echo Show, the on-screen controls.
- Check the Alexa app for an active communication session. Menu names and control placement can differ by app version, language, region and device.
Amazon’s Alexa communications guidance covers calling and Drop In commands. A Drop In can connect permitted devices without the recipient manually answering, so an unexpected connection is also a reason to review who has permission.

- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Stop unwanted Drop In connections
Drop In is an optional communication feature. It can connect Echo devices in the same household and, when permissions allow, contacts outside it. You can change access for one Echo, revoke permission from a contact, or disable communications on a particular device.
Turn off Drop In on one Echo
- Open the Alexa app and go to Devices.
- Select Echo & Alexa, then choose the affected Echo.
- Open its Communications or Drop In settings.
- Turn Drop In off, or choose the least permissive option offered.
This is an approximate route: the precise labels and location can vary with the app, device, language and region. Amazon support recommends turning off Drop In when an unexpected green light persists; see its guidance on a spinning green light.

Revoke one contact’s permission
- In the Alexa app, open Communication, Conversation or Contacts, depending on the version.
- Select the contact and find the permission that allows them to Drop In on your Echo devices.
- Turn that permission off.
Amazon’s communication documentation describes managing and revoking Drop In permissions for outside contacts in the Alexa app.
Disable Communications for one Echo
If you want to keep Alexa calling or Drop In available on other household devices, change the affected Echo’s settings rather than disabling communications across the account. In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo & Alexa, select that Echo, open Communications, and disable communications or the individual features shown. This may prevent the device from receiving calls, Drop In sessions and other communication functions offered in its settings.

Clear a notification that looks green
Once you have ruled out an active call or Drop In, ask “Alexa, what are my notifications?” You can also say “Alexa, what did I miss?” Notifications may come from messages, enabled skills, shopping updates or other supported services. Listen to or handle the pending notifications; Amazon’s notifications guidance says the indicator should clear after they are handled.
Prevent interruptions with Do Not Disturb
For quiet hours, say “Alexa, turn on Do Not Disturb.” To resume alerts, say “Alexa, turn off Do Not Disturb.” Scheduling may be available in the app, depending on the device and software.

Do Not Disturb is a prevention measure, not a guaranteed way to end a call already in progress. Amazon says Drop In does not override this mode, which can also suppress certain incoming alerts. When enabled, an Echo may show a slowly pulsing purple light. Amazon discusses the mode’s notification behavior in its Alexa guidance; its communication documentation describes how Drop In interacts with Do Not Disturb.

If you did not knowingly start a call or Drop In, Voice History can help identify whether Alexa interpreted nearby speech as a command. In the Alexa app, open More or Settings, then Alexa Privacy and Voice History. Review the relevant recording for a command that may have started a call, answered one or initiated Drop In. Deleting a recording does not necessarily end an active session, so hang up first.

Amazon support recommends reviewing Voice History when a user does not recognize the action that caused the green light; see its troubleshooting response.
If the green light will not go away
- Say “Alexa, hang up”, then try “Alexa, disconnect”.
- Check the Alexa app or Echo Show screen for an active call or Drop In.
- Ask for notifications and handle any that are waiting.
- Review Drop In and Communications settings for the affected Echo and check contact permissions.
- Review Voice History for a possible accidental command.
- If the immediate concern is nighttime interruptions, turn on Do Not Disturb.
- As a recovery step, unplug the Echo for about 30 seconds, reconnect it and see whether the light returns.
- If it returns, update the Alexa app, check the Echo’s network connection and contact Amazon Device Support.
A power cycle may clear a temporary software state, but it will not remove the call, permission or voice-trigger condition that brought the light back. Amazon support’s persistent-light troubleshooting emphasizes checking communication activity and settings. A factory reset is not a routine fix for a status light caused by a call, Drop In or notification.
Review privacy permissions after an unexpected Drop In
An unexpected green light alone does not establish that an Echo has been compromised: first check for an incoming call, an active call or Drop In, a notification, or an accidental voice command. If the device connected through Drop In unexpectedly, review permissions for both household devices and outside contacts, and remove access you do not want. Disable Drop In on the affected Echo if you do not use the feature there.
