Change the spoken language in the Google Home app: tap your profile picture or initial, then Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant or Google Assistant → Languages. Choose a replacement language or add another one. This is the voice assistant’s language—not necessarily the language of the app or your phone—and the change can affect all Google Home and Nest devices linked to that home.
Change the Google Home voice assistant language
- Open the Google Home app on a phone or tablet connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the speaker or display, or signed in to the same Google account.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner, then tap Home settings.
- Tap Gemini for Home voice assistant or Google Assistant, depending on the option shown for your home.
- Tap Languages, then tap the currently selected language.
- Choose the language you want from the available list.
- Test it by saying “Hey Google” and making a simple request in that language.
The setting applies to Google Home and Nest devices linked to the same home; it is not a per-speaker switch. If you only want to change one room’s speaker, do not assume this setting will leave the others alone. Google’s language instructions describe the current app route and linked-device effect. Menu labels can vary by app version, region, account, and whether Gemini for Home is enabled.

Changing this setting does not necessarily change the Google Home app’s menus, your phone’s language, or the language shown on a Nest Hub display. Display language support can differ from what the app’s language list suggests.

- Return to Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant or Google Assistant → Languages.
- Tap Add a language and select the additional language.
- Speak to the assistant in one of the selected languages after saying “Hey Google.”
With multiple languages configured, the assistant can respond in the language used for the request. It may not understand a phrase that switches languages partway through, so keep a request in one language. Features and recognition may also vary by language.

Language limits depend on which assistant your home uses: Google’s current guidance says Gemini for Home can add up to two additional languages, while Google Assistant recognizes up to two languages. These are not one universal limit for every account or device. Check Google’s current language guidance for the assistant shown in your app.
Let household members use different languages
For Google Assistant, Voice Match can support different preferred languages for different household members when each person sets it up with the speaker. Without Voice Match, users may get the language configured for the home rather than their own preference. Google’s guidance for Gemini for Home also says the Home admin’s primary language takes precedence in relevant setups.

Check language support for your device and region
There is no single language list that guarantees support on every Google Home or Nest product. Availability can depend on country, device type, specific model, and whether the home uses Google Assistant or Gemini for Home. A smart display may support fewer languages than a speaker, and a language appearing in the app is not a guarantee that it works on every display.

- Music here. Music there. Music everywhere - Create a home audio system that fills your home with sound.* Nest Audio works together with your other Nest speakers and displays, Chromecast-enabled devices, or compatible speakers. And it's easy to set up.
- Rich, full sound. Room filling sound with 30 watt woofer, tweeter and tuning software. Cranks out powerful punchy music to fill your room
- Connect with family and friends - Nest Audio helps you stay in touch. Just say, “Hey Google” to broadcast messages on every Nest speaker and display in the house. Use your Nest speakers as an intercom and chat from room to room.
- Huge help around the house. You can say things like, "Hey Google, what's the weather this weekend?" Ask Google about the news or sports scores. - Includes LED Key Chain (Color May Vary)
For example, Google’s current U.S. tables list English and Spanish for Google Assistant on speakers and Nest displays; listings differ for other regions, devices, and Gemini for Home. Treat the list in your Google Home app—and Google’s device and language information—as the relevant check for your setup.

- Check the home and account. Make sure you selected the correct home and that the phone or tablet is signed in to the account linked to the device, or connected to its Wi-Fi.
- Identify the assistant. Note whether the settings show Google Assistant or Gemini for Home; supported languages and availability can differ.
- Check the device and region. A language may be supported for a speaker but not a display, or may not be available in your country or for your model.
- Refresh the app. Update Google Home if an update is available, close and reopen it, and check the language list again.
- Compare with Google’s support information. If the language is shown as supported for your exact device and region but is still absent in the app, contact Google Home support.
Changing your phone or Google Account language, or using a VPN, is not a reliable way to unlock a language that is unavailable for the home, region, or device.

If the speaker stops responding after the change
- Confirm the speaker or display has power and is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Check that its microphone is not muted. If it has a physical microphone switch, turn it on.
- Say “Hey Google” and check whether the device’s response indicator appears.
- Restart it by unplugging the power cable, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging it back in.
- Reopen Google Home and confirm the language selection saved. Test again after the setting has had time to take effect.
Google’s older platform-specific guidance says a language change may take up to 24 hours to apply; treat that as a possible delay, not a guaranteed waiting period. Avoid a factory reset as the first response to a setting that may still be propagating. See Google’s microphone and power checks and restart and Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy you may see Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant
Google is rolling out Gemini for Home selectively by country, language, account, and compatible device, so some homes see that label while others still see Google Assistant. The language controls are similar, but availability and supported languages can differ. Do not switch assistants just to look for another language: Google says a home that switches to Gemini for Home cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Check Google’s Gemini for Home availability and switching information before opting in.
You do not need to buy a new speaker or subscribe to Google Home Premium merely to change a supported assistant language.
