To turn a screwdriver handle, choose the insert or kit first, measure its hardware, and size the bore and ferrule to match. Then drill the blank safely, shape it for a secure grip, and fit the hardware without obstructing the reversible shaft. The dimensions in published examples are specific to their hardware—not universal specifications.
Choose the hardware and design before turning
Three practical approaches suit different projects. A purpose-made kit supplies matched components; a salvaged insert reuses an existing screwdriver; a hollow design adds storage for spare bits. Compare them before preparing the blank because the hardware determines the bore, depth, ferrule fit, and assembly.
| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose-made 4-in-1 kit | A straightforward build with a matched insert, shaft, bits, and ferrule. | Use the instructions for the exact kit. The Woodsmith kit described below uses a stepped bore; other kits may differ. |
| Salvaged reversible insert | Reusing a 6-in-1 screwdriver’s hardware with a custom-turned grip. | Measure the actual insert and bit assembly before drilling. The published 9/16-inch by 3¾-inch bore is specific to one example. |
| Hollow multi-bit handle | Keeping spare bits inside the handle. | Needs a hollow body plus a cap and locking components, so its construction is more involved. |
For a first build, a matched kit keeps the hardware decisions simpler. If reusing an insert, measure the parts you have rather than relying on a published project’s dimensions. A hollow design makes sense when built-in bit storage matters more than a simpler solid handle.
Gather materials and plan the fit
For a kit-based handle, gather a hardwood turning blank, the exact kit and its instructions, a drill and suitable bit or bits, calipers, lathe drill chuck, turning tools, sandpaper, and finish. WOOD Magazine’s example also fits a brass ferrule and finishes the handle with mineral oil.

- VERSATILE DESIGN: Flat-blade screwdriver with slotted shank perfect for various home improvement and repair tasks
- ERGONOMIC HANDLE: Wooden handle provides comfortable grip and enhanced control during use
- DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Heavy-duty steel shank ensures long-lasting performance and reliability
- PRACTICAL FEATURES: Labor-saving design reduces user fatigue during extended use
- MULTI-PURPOSE: Ideal for furniture assembly, basic repairs, and general maintenance tasks around the home
The Woodsmith instructions for kit 34890 specify a blank at least 1¾ × 1¾ × 6 inches and a stepped bore. Those dimensions and the bore layout are for that kit only. Check your own kit’s instructions before cutting or drilling. For salvaged hardware, measure both the insert and the bit assembly, then establish the hole diameter and depth from those measurements.
Turn and assemble a kit-based handle
- Prepare and mount the blank. Cut the blank to the dimensions required by the hardware instructions, then mount it securely on the lathe. Follow the lathe and chuck manufacturers’ directions for mounting and operation.
- Drill the hardware bore. Use the specified bit and depth for the exact kit. The Woodsmith instructions recommend drilling in increments to clear chips. Do not substitute dimensions from another kit or project.
- Fit the ferrule end. Turn the tenon to suit the ferrule specified by your kit. Woodsmith recommends checking the tenon against the ferrule with calipers; a suitable fit matters, and excess pressure can crack the ferrule end.
- Shape for control. Turn the handle to a comfortable profile, retaining enough material around the bore. WOOD Magazine’s example includes a shoulder to help the hand grip the handle.
- Sand and finish. Sand the turned surface and apply a finish appropriate to the project. WOOD Magazine uses mineral oil in its example.
- Install the insert and shaft. Assemble the hardware as directed by its manufacturer. Keep glue from entering the bore or obstructing the reversible shaft, and allow any adhesive to cure as directed before use.
Adapt the process for salvaged or hollow designs
Reuse a reversible insert
John I. Giem’s American Woodturner example measures the salvaged insert and bit assembly before drilling. Its 9/16-inch-diameter, 3¾-inch-deep hole fits that project’s hardware; do not treat those values as a standard. The article also describes offset-turning the handle on three axes to create a grip intended to help with stubborn screws. This is a shaping option, not a controlled ergonomics finding.

- Size - Hole Diameter: 6.3mm / 0.25", Total Length: 90mm / 3.54", Total Width: 24mm / 0.94"
- Material - The screwdriver handle is made of pvc and is wear resistance and insulation. Ergonomic non-slip handle for better control and more comfortable hold.
- Usage - Installation is simple, just tighten a screwdriver of appropriate size into the mounting hole to replace a broken or worn screwdriver handle.
- Applications - The blank screwdriver handles can replace lost or damaged screwdriver handles, suitable for electronic repair, furniture repair, mechanical repair, automotive repair, etc.
- Notice - Please check if the inner hole size of the handle is suitable for your screwdriver before ordering.
Add internal bit storage
Rockler’s hollow multi-bit design uses a hardwood blank, a 3-inch bit holder, a rare-earth magnet, and a screw for a magnetic cap lock. Its compartment holds up to eight 1-inch bits or four 2-inch bits. Those capacity and component details describe Rockler’s design, not every hollow handle. Plan the cavity, holder, cap, and lock together before turning so they fit the actual parts.
Drill and operate the lathe safely
The American Association of Woodturners’ February 2022 “PROJECT: Screwdriver Handle” safety note says: “Do not drill at high speed (about 500 rpm is plenty) and do not retract the handle from the drill bit while the lathe is on. Doing so may pull the drill chuck and bit out of the headstock Morse taper. This can result in serious injury, or if you are lucky, just damage to your equipment.” The approximately 500 rpm guidance belongs to that drilling context; follow the instructions for your lathe, chuck, and project as well.

- The insert seats to its intended depth and the reversible shaft moves freely.
- The ferrule is seated without forcing it hard enough to risk cracking the handle end.
- No glue or finish has entered the mechanism or blocked the shaft.
- The cap and bit holder on a hollow design fit and retain their intended components.
If the insert binds or the ferrule will not seat, stop and check the bore, tenon, and hardware measurements before applying more force. A published project’s dimensions cannot diagnose a mismatch with different parts.
