To make a passage for a lamp rod and electrical cord, choose the drilling method to suit the body: bore a solid turned piece on a lathe with a hollow tailstock and center, drill shorter shaft sections on a drill press, or form a channel inside the blank during glue-up. In every case, lay out the rod, wire route and cord exit together before drilling; the published dimensions below are examples, not universal specifications.
Choose a drilling method for the lamp body
The right approach depends on whether the lamp body is solid or assembled from shorter pieces, and on the equipment available. A reader asking about a 15-inch turned stand, for example, needs a straight center passage, but that length alone does not determine the correct bit or hole size.
Bore a solid turned body on the lathe
A long shell auger can bore a solid lamp body through a lathe’s hollow tailstock and center. The cited project uses a 28-inch bit, runs the lathe slowly, clears chips frequently and stops just short of the far end. Those details describe one setup, not a universal bit length, speed or hole specification. This method requires a lathe with both a hollow tailstock and center; without them, the described through-boring arrangement will not work.
Drill shorter shaft sections on a drill press
For a shaft made from sections, clamp each blank vertically to the drill-press table and check that it is square before drilling. Start the hole with a centered brad-point bit so the passage begins on the shaft’s axis. In one published design, a 1/2-inch bit makes a passage for a 3/8-inch-OD rod; longer sections are drilled from both ends when needed. These measurements belong to that design. Secure the blank against movement, and ensure the holes from opposite ends meet cleanly.

Build a channel into the glued-up blank
If the shaft is assembled from boards, cut matching grooves down the centers of the mating faces before glue-up. After assembly, drill through the end plugs and clear the internal route with a bell hanger bit. One published design uses a 7/16-inch-square channel and a 7/16-inch bell hanger bit. Treat those as project-specific dimensions; choose the channel to accommodate the rod and the planned wiring route in your own lamp.
Lay out the rod, wire and exit together
The rod passage must accommodate the hardware while leaving a usable route for the cord. The drill-press example pairs a 1/2-inch passage with a 3/8-inch-OD rod; the glued-channel design instead uses a square 7/16-inch route. Neither figure should be treated as a default for other lamp kits or constructions. Check the dimensions of your rod, cord and fittings, and decide where the cord exits the base before boring or gluing up the body.

Protect the cord at the rod and base
Check the rod’s lower end for sharp edges that could cut or abrade the wire, and fit a suitable grommet where the cord passes through the base. A lamp hardware kit includes its own components and assembly and wiring instructions; follow those instructions for the specific kit rather than substituting a generic wiring procedure.
For cord replacement context, iFixit’s Table Lamp Cord Replacement guide says to unplug the lamp before work, route the new wire through the base, tie an underwriter’s knot, and connect the ribbed conductor to the silver screw and the other conductor to the brass screw. Keep the lamp unplugged during assembly and follow the guide’s sequence before the final test. The knot provides strain relief if the cord is pulled, helping keep force away from the electrical connections; it does not replace the lamp-kit instructions or applicable local electrical requirements.

Check the setup before drilling
- Confirm whether the body is solid, sectional or being glued up around a channel; choose the method and equipment accordingly.
- Lay out the rod, cord route and exit point as one plan, then verify clearances against the actual hardware.
- Center the hole at entry, check alignment, and clamp the work securely before starting the drill.
- If drilling a long section from both ends, plan for the holes to meet rather than assuming the bit will remain perfectly centered throughout.
- Inspect the rod end and cord exit for sharp edges, and use a protective grommet where the wire passes through the base.
- Keep the lamp unplugged for wiring work and follow the instructions provided with the lamp kit.
