Most robotic-mower navigation faults become easier to fix once you identify the mower’s architecture. A physical-loop mower needs an unbroken boundary and guide-wire circuit; a wire-free mower needs a clear satellite view, reliable RTK or other correction data, and an accurately drawn virtual map. “No loop signal,” boundary escapes, GPS drift, missed lawn sections and missed obstacles each point to a different part of that system.

First identify how your mower navigates

Before remapping the lawn or replacing parts, determine whether the mower uses buried or pinned wire, wire-free GNSS/GPS with RTK correction, or a combination of positioning methods. Standard GPS is accurate only to a few metres. Husqvarna support says that is not precise enough to keep a mower reliably inside lawn boundaries; correction data such as RTK reduces positioning error to centimetres.

Characteristic Physical-loop system Wire-free GNSS/RTK system
Boundary definition Boundary wire, usually with one or more guide wires Virtual boundary drawn in an app
Main failure risk Cut, loose or incorrectly connected wire; station fault Blocked satellite view, weak correction service, map error or metal interference
Typical first symptom “No loop signal,” failure to dock or an outside-work-area warning GPS drift, stopping, map-position jumps or crossing a virtual edge
Internet dependence Local mowing can continue without Wi-Fi after the loop is installed Correction data may require Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity, depending on the model
Boundary editing Requires physically moving or repairing wire Usually edited in the mower app, but accuracy depends on positioning quality
Edge behaviour Depends on wire placement, guide-wire routing and programmed offsets Depends on antenna visibility, correction quality and virtual-edge margin
Obstacle sensing Model-dependent radar, ultrasonic, camera, bumper or lifting sensors Model-dependent VisionFence, LiDAR, camera, bumper or lifting sensors

Do not apply a wire-break remedy to a wire-free mower, or redraw a virtual map when a physical loop is open. The symptom may look similar while the repair is completely different.

Use this eight-step triage sequence

  1. Record the exact message and indicator light. Note whether the mower says “No loop signal,” “outside work area,” “GPS weak,” “positioning lost,” or something else. Photograph the station light and the map or warning screen before changing settings.
  2. Confirm the navigation architecture. Look for boundary-wire terminals and a charging-station loop, or for a GNSS/RTK antenna and virtual map. This determines every later test.
  3. Check the charging station and docking approach. Clear grass, mud and objects from the approach. Husqvarna’s support test places the mower about 3 m from the boundary and checks whether it follows the boundary or guide wire and docks on the first attempt. Failure on the first attempt justifies checking the station, connectors and guide-wire routing before changing the map.
  4. Inspect the simplest physical causes. Look for loose station terminals, visible wire damage, displaced pegs, an antenna blocked by a wall or tree, a metal shelter, or an unplugged network device.
  5. Test the boundary system, not just the app. For a loop mower, test the circuit with a wire-break detector or by splitting the loop into sections. For a wire-free mower, compare the virtual map with the real edge and check the correction-service status.
  6. Check clearances and routing. Verify guide-wire terminals, island direction, edge margins, slopes, walls, roofs and metal structures. A mower can be electrically healthy yet leave the area because the installation gives it an ambiguous route.
  7. Run a controlled test. Test one small section with people, pets and loose objects removed. Observe whether the mower loses position, refuses a boundary, misses a strip or contacts an obstacle. Change one setting at a time so the result is attributable.
  8. Finish with software and maintenance. Update firmware and the app, clean camera or LiDAR surfaces where fitted, check blades and cutting height, and then repeat the controlled test. If the fault remains, use the model manual and support channel rather than repeatedly editing the map.

Fixing “No loop signal” on a physical-wire mower

Read the station light and inspect terminals

A flashing-blue charging-station light together with “No loop signal” generally indicates an open boundary circuit. Start at the station: check that both loop conductors are fully inserted in the correct terminals, that no conductor has pulled out, and that known splice points are dry and mechanically secure. A station can power up while the loop itself remains open.

Disconnect power according to the model manual before handling terminals. Do not assume a recent gardening job caused the break; common locations include a shallow section exposed by edging, a splice beneath a wet patch, and a wire pulled tight around a tree or path.

Locate a break systematically

If the visible inspection finds nothing, use a compatible wire-break detector. If you do not have one, divide the loop into halves at an accessible point and test each half with the method specified by the mower manufacturer. Continue halving the suspect section until the damaged span is identified. This is faster and more reliable than replacing the entire perimeter at random.

Make a compatible waterproof repair

Replace the damaged span or splice it with a connector and repair kit intended for the mower’s boundary-wire type and gauge. The connection must be waterproof and mechanically protected from soil movement and mowing equipment. A connector that fits another brand or a household wire nut may create a temporary contact that fails again when the ground becomes wet.

After repair, reconnect the station, wait for the normal loop indication, and perform the 3 m docking test. If the signal remains absent after a verified continuous loop, the station electronics or its power supply may need model-specific service.

Stopping a physical-wire mower from leaving the work area

Check guide-wire terminals and routing

Outside-work-area faults are not always a broken perimeter. Confirm that each guide wire is connected to the designated G1, G2 or G3 terminal, not to the AR or AL terminals used for the boundary circuit on applicable installations. A wire on the wrong terminal can leave the loop electrically intact while sending the mower along an invalid route.

Inspect the guide wire from the station to the perimeter. It should approach the boundary in the orientation shown in the model manual and should not create an unintended shortcut across an island or narrow passage.

Correct island direction and clearances

For an island around a tree, bed or pond, the outbound and return conductors must be routed together in the direction required by the mower. If the island loop is oriented incorrectly, the mower may interpret it as an opening and enter the protected area.

Husqvarna’s outside-work-area guidance gives a normal 35 cm margin from a slope or obstacle. Treat that as a model-specific reference, not a universal measurement: the manual may require a different clearance for a steep bank, wall, drop-off or narrow passage. Reposition wire that is too close to a slope or obstacle, then retest the approach rather than immediately widening the entire lawn.

Verify lawn-coverage settings

Coverage settings tell the mower which zones and guide-wire routes to use. A correct wire installation can still leave strips unmowed if a zone is disabled, a start point is misplaced, or the programmed coverage percentage does not match the installation. Compare the app settings with the actual zone layout and run each zone separately while observing the first route.

Diagnosing GPS drift, stopping and virtual-boundary errors

Restore a clear view of the sky

Wire-free positioning depends on the antenna receiving satellite signals and, on RTK systems, receiving correction data. Trees, tall hedges, walls, roofs and metal shelters can block or reflect signals. Move the reference antenna or charging station to the location recommended by the manufacturer, with the widest practical sky view. A mower that works in an open centre but drifts beside a wall is showing a positioning-environment problem, not necessarily a defective drive system.

Check correction data and connectivity

RTK correction can arrive through a local reference station, Wi-Fi or mobile service, depending on the model. Check the app for correction-service status and verify that the reference unit has power and network access. A wire-free mower may still show a map while correction data is unavailable, but its boundary-level accuracy can degrade until the correction link returns.

Remove metal interference

Segway Navimow guidance recommends a metal-free shelter because metal can interfere with GNSS reception. Move the antenna away from metal sheds, reinforced structures and large steel covers, or use the manufacturer’s approved placement arrangement. Test the same boundary again after relocating the obstruction; otherwise a map change may hide the real cause.

Give a weak-GPS edge extra margin

When GPS is weak, Segway recommends maintaining at least a 15 cm gap between a Navimow H1 virtual boundary and the real boundary. This is a specific H1 recommendation, not a universal setting for every mower. Use the model’s stated margin around walls, drops, ponds and planting beds, and leave more room where the antenna view is obstructed.

Rebuild only the affected map section

If the mower repeatedly drifts at one tree line or beside one roof, inspect that section on the map before deleting the whole lawn. Re-record the affected edge in stable satellite conditions, keep the antenna stationary during mapping, and verify the new edge with a slow supervised run. A complete remap is appropriate only when the map itself is broadly misaligned.

Why a mower misses parts of the lawn

Physical-loop causes

  • A guide wire is connected to the wrong terminal or is routed in the wrong direction.
  • An island loop is oriented incorrectly, creating a false opening or an inaccessible pocket.
  • The boundary is too close to a slope, wall or obstacle for the mower’s programmed offset.
  • A zone, start point or lawn-coverage setting does not match the installed wires.
  • The mower cannot complete a docking or guide-wire route and therefore never reaches a remote section.

Wire-free causes

  • The virtual boundary was recorded while the antenna had a blocked or reflected satellite view.
  • RTK or other correction data is unavailable, allowing position error to grow.
  • A metal shelter, wall or roof creates a local dead spot.
  • The virtual edge leaves too little margin for the model’s actual positioning accuracy.

Watch one complete route before changing settings. If the mower consistently skips the same strip, measure that strip against the map or guide-wire path. If skipped areas move from run to run, suspect positioning or correction stability rather than a fixed boundary geometry error.

Obstacle detection: capabilities and blind spots

Understand what the sensors can and cannot see

Obstacle detection is model-dependent. Husqvarna systems using radar or ultrasonic sensing can change direction around detected objects, but Husqvarna states that object avoidance is not a safety feature. Detection can miss flat, very low, dark or partially hidden objects. On applicable Husqvarna models, object avoidance is automatically disabled within 1.2 m of a boundary, so an object near an edge may not receive the same avoidance behaviour as one in open grass.

Segway models may combine VisionFence, LiDAR, bumpers and lifting sensors. A Terranox bumper, for example, reverses and turns after contact; that is a contact response, not proof that the object was identified in advance. Sensor combinations, detection ranges and software behaviour vary by model and firmware.

Perform a pre-mow safety sweep

Remove toys, stones, hoses, branches, tools and pet waste before every run. Mark or physically protect objects the mower must never approach, especially near the 1.2 m boundary zone on applicable models. Keep children and pets away during a diagnostic run, and supervise the first test after any map, wire or sensor change.

Separate a sensor fault from an expected limitation

  • One missed flat object: likely within a known blind spot; remove it and do not infer a failed sensor.
  • Repeated failure to detect large upright objects in open grass: clean the sensor surfaces, update firmware and consult the model manual.
  • Repeated bumper impacts with no reversal: stop the mower, inspect the bumper for obstruction or damage, and seek service.
  • Objects avoided in open lawn but not near the edge: check whether the model disables avoidance within its boundary zone.

App, Wi-Fi and local mowing are separate systems

An app that cannot connect does not automatically mean the mower cannot follow a physical loop. Husqvarna says its Automower Wi-Fi models support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; a 5 GHz-only network can therefore leave the app offline even when the mower and loop are healthy. Boundary-wire installations can continue local mowing without Wi-Fi after programming.

Wire-free systems are different when correction data is delivered over Wi-Fi or mobile service. The mower may remain powered and show its map while losing the correction stream that provides centimetre-level boundary accuracy. Check the reference-station or correction-service status, router band, signal strength and mobile coverage before remapping.

Maintenance that prevents repeat faults

  • Install firmware and app updates listed for the exact mower model.
  • Clean camera, radar, ultrasonic and LiDAR surfaces with the method in the manual; a film of grass or dust can reduce detection.
  • Inspect the charging contacts, station approach and guide-wire entry point.
  • Keep blades sharp and set cutting height appropriate to the lawn. Segway’s current Terranox support guidance says blades are typically replaced after 80 hours; treat that as a model-specific interval and follow the app’s parts-maintenance screen.
  • Use replacement wire, connectors and blades that match the mower’s specifications. A physically compatible-looking part can still have the wrong wire size, connector design or blade balance.
  • After maintenance, run a supervised edge, docking and obstacle test instead of assuming the previous schedule remains safe.

Physical wire or wire-free: which fault path fits?

Question Physical loop Wire-free GNSS/RTK
What to inspect first Station terminals, loop light, splices and guide wires Antenna sky view, correction status, map and metal surroundings
How to localise a fault Wire-break detector or split-loop testing Controlled open-sky test and comparison of affected map sections
Main installation labour Installing, burying, pegging and later repairing wire Positioning antenna/reference equipment and mapping the lawn
Typical boundary failure Cut, loose, wet or incorrectly connected wire Signal obstruction, correction outage or insufficient virtual-edge margin
Editing a boundary Physical re-routing and waterproof splicing App remapping, followed by a supervised verification run
Edge accuracy Determined by wire placement and mower offset Centimetre-level only when correction and satellite conditions are adequate
Obstacle response Depends on the installed model’s radar, ultrasonic, camera, bumper or lifting sensors Depends on the model’s GNSS context plus VisionFence, LiDAR, camera, bumper or lifting sensors

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider when a verified continuous loop still produces no signal, the charging station has damaged terminals or power components, the reference antenna cannot maintain correction in an otherwise suitable location, or the mower repeatedly collides after sensor cleaning and firmware updates. Also escalate when a boundary borders a drop, public path, pond or other hazard that cannot be made safe with the model’s documented clearances.

Give support the model and firmware version, exact error text, station-light state, installation type, photos of terminals or antenna placement, and the result of the 3 m docking or controlled open-sky test. That evidence distinguishes a wiring repair, a map correction, a connectivity problem and a hardware fault without unnecessary part replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical rule

Start with the navigation architecture, then test the physical signal path before changing boundaries. “No loop signal” calls for loop, station and splice checks; GPS drift calls for sky view, correction data and map-edge checks; missed obstacles require a safety sweep because avoidance has documented blind spots and is not a safety system. Make one change at a time, verify it with a supervised run, and match every repair part and clearance to the mower’s model manual.
