Diagnose it in this order: isolate the machine safely, verify fluid level and condition, inspect the suction and return paths, check lockout and pilot controls, measure charge or pilot pressure at the specified test port, then test main pressure under the conditions given for the exact model and serial number.
Do not guess at a pressure target. A 45.5 L/min (12.0 gpm) flow figure published for a Bobcat MT85 at high engine speed, a 0–1000 psi gauge called for in a Terex PT100 procedure, and a 450 psi pilot-relief setting listed for one Tigercat model are machine-specific values, not universal mini track-loader specifications.

Make the loader safe before touching the hydraulics
Hydraulic faults can injure you even when the engine is stopped. The Bobcat MT85 service manual warns: “Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can have sufficient force to enter a person’s body by penetrating the skin. This can cause serious injury and possible death if proper medical treatment by a physician familiar with this injury is not received immediately.” A pinhole stream may be invisible and can penetrate skin, so never search for a leak with your hand.
- Park on firm, level ground away from traffic and drop the bucket or attachment fully to the ground.
- Stop the engine, remove the key and follow the manual’s procedure for disabling the hydraulic system.
- Block or mechanically support any raised loader arm, boom, or attachment. Never rely on hydraulic pressure to hold a suspended component.
- Move the controls through their full travel with the engine off, as specified by the manufacturer, to release residual pressure.
- Keep your body out of the line of fire around hoses, fittings, cylinders and pumps. Wear eye protection and suitable gloves.
- Before loosening a hose, filter, gauge connection or fitting, confirm that the circuit is depressurized according to the service manual.
If oil has penetrated the skin, obtain emergency medical treatment immediately and tell the clinician that it is a high-pressure hydraulic injection injury. It can look like a small puncture while causing deep tissue damage.

First classify what failed
Write down exactly what the loader does and does not do before changing parts. The pattern determines whether to begin with a common supply or enable problem, or with one downstream circuit.
| Observed symptom | Most useful first area | What the pattern suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Lift, tilt, auxiliary hydraulics and travel all weak or dead | Fluid supply, suction side, charge/pilot pressure, pump drive, main relief and hydraulic enable circuit | A common source or control fault is more likely than several cylinders failing at once |
| Only lift is weak | Lift spool, load-check or relief valve, lift cylinder, hose and linkage | The main pump may still be capable of producing pressure |
| Only tilt or auxiliary function is affected | That valve section, couplers, hoses, motor or cylinder and its circuit relief | Look downstream of the common supply |
| One direction works but the opposite direction does not | Directional spool, pilot signal, port relief, hose restriction or mechanical linkage | A directional or load-side fault is more likely than total pump failure |
| Functions work cold and fade as oil warms | Internal leakage, worn pump, relief valve leakage, incorrect oil or suction-side air entry | Lower viscosity at operating temperature can expose clearance or sealing problems |
Also note whether the machine moves normally, whether the engine loads when a function is commanded, and whether the problem appeared suddenly or developed gradually. A sudden total loss points toward a failed enable circuit, broken pump drive, disconnected hose, empty reservoir or relief valve stuck open. A gradual loss is more consistent with contamination, wear, leakage or a restriction.
Check hydraulic fluid before testing pressure
Verify the level using the machine’s own reference
Park in the position specified by the manufacturer and read the sight glass or dipstick at the specified oil temperature. A level that looks correct with the arms raised may be too low when the cylinders are retracted, or the reverse, so use the manual’s checking position. Do not top up with an unapproved fluid merely to get the machine moving; the wrong viscosity or additive package can change response, lubrication and seal life.
Inspect the oil’s condition
- Foam or a frothy sight glass: air is entering the suction side, the oil level may be low, or the return system may be aerating the reservoir.
- Milky oil: water contamination is present and can damage components and reduce lubrication.
- Burnt odor or very dark oil: overheating or oxidation may have occurred.
- Metallic particles: pump, motor, valve or bearing wear may be shedding material.
- Unusual debris: contamination can hold a relief valve open, damage a spool, or accelerate pump wear.
If the level is low, find and repair the leak rather than simply adding oil. If contamination is visible or a major component has failed, follow the model’s flushing, filter and oil-replacement procedure. The MT85 service procedure calls for filter replacement when fluid is contaminated or after major repairs, followed by a level and leak check.

Inspect the suction, return and cooling paths
A pump cannot create useful pressure if it is starved at its inlet. With the engine off and the system safe, inspect the complete path from reservoir to pump:
- Look for a collapsed, soft or kinked pump-inlet hose.
- Check clamps and fittings for looseness that could admit air without leaving an obvious oil leak.
- Inspect the tank pickup, strainer and inlet screen for sludge or debris.
- Examine the return filter for restriction, incorrect installation or a collapsed element.
- Check the oil cooler and external lines for blockage that can raise temperature and accelerate leakage.
- Look for wetness around fittings, pump shafts, filter housings and hose crimps.
Correct a restriction or air leak before condemning the pump. A suction-side leak may draw air while leaving little visible oil on the floor. After correcting the fault, refill with the specified fluid, bleed or prime the system as directed, and recheck for foam and abnormal noise.
Check the controls, interlocks and enable circuit
Modern compact track loaders commonly inhibit hydraulics unless the operator-presence and restraint controls are satisfied. Verify the seat or arm-bar switch, hydraulic lockout switch, fuses, relays, pressure switches and wiring connectors. Inspect for damaged harnesses near the cab, water intrusion, loose grounds and corroded terminals.

Move each joystick or hand control through its range with the engine off. Confirm that it returns fully to neutral and that the mechanical linkage is connected and not binding. The MT85 troubleshooting chart includes disconnected linkage, controls that do not return to neutral, and lockout, engine or pressure-switch circuit failures. A Terex PT-30 troubleshooting page also identifies a blown safety fuse, a pilot-feed leak and a stuck auxiliary pilot-generation spool as possible causes.

If the loader has an electronic display, record active fault codes before cycling power. A cleared code can remove useful evidence. Do not bypass a seat, arm-bar or lockout switch to operate the machine; test the circuit as specified and repair the safety function.
Measure charge or pilot pressure at the specified test port
Charge or pilot pressure supplies the control circuits that command valves and, on some loaders, primes other hydraulic circuits. The Terex PT100 service procedure states: “Charge pressure is used to prime the various circuits, including the joysticks, with hydraulic oil for operation.” It identifies a quick coupler near the hydraulic filters for general pressure checks and calls for a 0–1000 p.s.i. pressure gauge.
Use a calibrated gauge, the correct adapter and the exact test port identified for your loader. Observe the manufacturer’s requirements for oil temperature, engine speed, control position and whether the measurement is taken at standby or while a function is commanded. A low pilot or charge reading can make every function sluggish or completely unavailable even when the main pump and engine appear normal.
Some machines use a pilot-relief setting that is much lower than their main implement pressure. One Tigercat manual lists 450 psi for its pilot-relief setting and warns that low pilot pressure affects control response. That number must not be applied to another model, even if the loader appears similar.

Test main pressure only with the model-specific procedure
Once fluid supply, suction integrity, controls and pilot pressure are satisfactory, connect the gauge to the manufacturer-designated main-pressure test port. Follow the service manual for warm-up time, engine speed, attachment position and the maximum time a relief valve may be held. A generic pressure target can damage a pump, hose or valve and can produce a false diagnosis.
Record pressure at standby and while commanding the affected function under load. Compare the result with the specification for the exact model and serial-number range. Also record engine rpm and oil temperature; pressure that is acceptable cold but falls sharply at operating temperature is diagnostically different from pressure that is low from startup.
Use pressure behavior to narrow the fault
| Test result | Likely causes | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Charge or pilot pressure low | Low oil, suction restriction or air entry, worn charge pump, pilot-relief problem, pilot leak or enable fault | Recheck level and inlet path, inspect pilot circuit and relief valve, then test pump condition |
| Main pressure low at standby and under load | Pump not being driven, worn or damaged pump, inlet starvation, relief valve stuck open, or severe leakage | Confirm pump drive, inspect suction path and test the relief and pump with the manual’s procedure |
| Standby pressure correct but pressure falls only under load | Main or port relief mis-set or leaking, worn cylinder or motor, damaged spool, load-check fault or internal leakage | Isolate the affected valve section and actuator; compare pressure on the working and failed circuits |
| Normal pressure but no commanded movement | Pilot control, electrical enable circuit, coupler, blocked hose, mechanical linkage or a seized actuator | Verify pilot signal at the valve, electrical continuity and actuator movement |
| Pressure and movement deteriorate as oil warms | Internal leakage, worn pump or motor, relief leakage, incorrect oil or temperature-related sealing problem | Measure hot and cold values, inspect for bypass flow and confirm the correct fluid |
Pressure alone does not prove that a pump is healthy. A worn pump can reach a brief peak with little flow, while a relief valve can produce a plausible gauge reading but divert nearly all flow back to the tank. Where the service manual specifies a flow test, use it with the correct test equipment.

Lift circuit
Inspect the lift spool, load-check valve, cylinder hoses and cylinder seals. A cylinder with internal bypass may drift or move weakly while system pressure appears normal elsewhere. A damaged load-check or port-relief valve can affect one direction or one function without disabling travel and auxiliary hydraulics.

Tilt circuit
Check the tilt spool and linkage, both cylinder hoses, the cylinder rod and seals, and any port relief associated with the circuit. Look for a hose that is crushed under the frame or a quick coupler that is not fully seated.
Auxiliary hydraulics
Inspect both auxiliary couplers, hose routing and the auxiliary-control spool. A stuck auxiliary pilot-generation spool is specifically listed as a possible fault on the Terex PT-30 troubleshooting page. If the attachment works on another machine but not this loader, compare coupler engagement and pilot command before replacing the attachment motor.
Travel
If lift and tilt work but travel is weak, inspect the travel-control pilot signal, final-drive motors, travel reliefs, hoses and undercarriage restrictions. If both tracks are affected equally, start with common charge or pilot pressure and the travel-enable circuit; if one side is affected, focus on that side’s motor, hose and valve section.

Why a loader can run normally while hydraulics fail
The diesel engine only supplies mechanical input. Hydraulic work still requires an intact pump drive, adequate oil at the inlet, correct charge or pilot pressure, an enabled control circuit, properly set relief valves and components that do not leak internally. A failed lockout switch can block every command without changing engine sound. A pump can rotate while its clearances are too large to generate flow. A relief valve stuck open can send oil back to the reservoir instead of an actuator. A damaged cylinder, motor or spool can consume pressure in only one circuit.
Temperature-related loss of power
When a loader is strong immediately after startup but becomes slow or weak after warming, compare fluid level, foam, oil temperature, standby pressure and loaded pressure while cold and hot. Warm oil is less viscous, so leakage across worn pump, motor, valve or cylinder clearances increases. Heat can also reveal a relief valve that is leaking or an incorrect fluid grade. Do not mask the symptom by running at excessive engine speed; identify the source of heat and bypass flow.
When professional service is the right next step
Stop field diagnosis and use a qualified hydraulic technician when testing requires opening a high-pressure circuit, adjusting a relief valve, flushing contamination, rebuilding a pump, or disassembling a cylinder or travel motor. The technician should have the exact service manual, calibrated gauges, appropriate adapters, clean assembly practices and a way to capture and dispose of contaminated oil.
Provide the technician with the machine model, serial number, oil type, operating temperature, observed symptoms, pressure readings, engine rpm and any fault codes. Include whether the failure affects all functions or one circuit and whether it changes as the oil warms. This prevents a generic pump replacement from being installed when the actual fault is a fuse, suction leak, pilot circuit or relief valve.

Verify the repair before returning to work
- Refill the reservoir to the specified level with the approved fluid.
- Install the correct filter and clean or flush the system if contamination or a component failure requires it.
- Prime and bleed the system using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Start at low speed and check for abnormal pump noise, foaming and visible leaks.
- Test charge or pilot pressure, then main pressure and flow if specified.
- Operate lift, tilt, auxiliary and travel functions individually, first without a load and then under a controlled load.
- Confirm that controls return to neutral, interlocks work and no warning or fault codes return.
- Recheck oil level and leaks after the machine reaches operating temperature.
