Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Freefoam’s documented dormer transformation followed a straightforward cladding-led sequence: the existing render was removed, battens were fitted, and Fortex embossed cladding was installed on each dormer elevation, with matching trims completing the edges. The homeowner chose the Sand colour because it was described as similar to the original painted render and coordinated with the windows and brickwork. Contractor Ricky said this particular project took “a couple of weeks” with scaffolding in place. That is one project account, not a guaranteed programme for every dormer.
What the Freefoam dormer transformation involved
The case study describes a refurbishment of existing dormers rather than a rebuild. The work focused on the dormer elevations (often called the cheeks):
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Existing render was removed.
- Battens were installed over the prepared structure.
- Freefoam Fortex embossed cladding was fitted to each dormer.
- Matching trims were used to finish the corners and edges.
Ricky, the contractor quoted by Freefoam, said he had used the company’s cladding on dormer elevations before: “We’ve used the Freefoam cladding before on dormer elevations, and it works really well.” His comment is an individual assessment of the product and installation, not an independent performance test. The case study does not name his employer, the property’s location, the job date, the exact profile code or a detailed breakdown of the work.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe homeowner selected Sand. Freefoam’s account says the colour was close to the previous painted-render appearance and worked with the existing windows and brickwork. That is the design rationale reported for this house; it is not a measured colour match or an independent architectural assessment.

How a cladding-led dormer refurbishment is carried out
The project narrative gives the broad sequence. A real installation still needs a survey and the manufacturer’s current instructions, because fixing patterns, ventilation, movement allowances and substrate requirements depend on the product and the building.
1. Define the scope before stripping the render
Confirm whether the work is limited to the dormer cheeks or also includes the roof covering, fascia, soffit, windows, flashing, insulation or structural framing. Re-cladding a sound dormer is a different job from rebuilding or extending it. Record the dimensions of every elevation, openings, corners and junctions so the installer can calculate boards, trims, battens, fixings and access equipment.
2. Remove the existing render and inspect what is underneath
In the featured project, the render was taken off before the battens went on. Once exposed, the sheathing and framing should be checked for moisture damage, rot, movement and unevenness. Any defective material must be repaired before cladding conceals it. The case study does not say what substrate or repairs were found, so those details cannot be assumed for another dormer.
3. Install battens to the approved layout
Battens create the fixing plane for the cladding and help the installer form a consistent surface around windows and corners. Their size, spacing, treatment, fixing method and any required cavity or ventilation arrangement must come from the relevant Freefoam guide and the project’s construction details. Do not copy spacing from a different profile or a generic online diagram.
4. Fit the Fortex boards and coordinate junctions
The boards are then installed in the specified direction and sequence, with allowances for movement and exposure conditions set out in the technical literature. Openings, roof-to-wall junctions and transitions to brickwork need planned trims or flashings rather than improvised cuts. The featured crew used matching trims to finish each dormer, which kept the visible accessories within the same system.

5. Complete trims, checks and handover
Before the scaffold comes down, inspect board alignment, joints, corner details, window reveals, fixings and any areas where cladding meets roof or masonry. Keep the product data, installation record and maintenance instructions with the property documents. A photograph of concealed battens and junctions can also help future repair work, although the case study does not state that such a record was made.
Which cladding was used?
The featured dormers received Freefoam Fortex embossed cladding in Sand. “Fortex” identifies the product range; “Sand” identifies the selected colour. The case study does not provide the profile name, board dimensions or product code, so an installer should verify those details before ordering. Matching trims were part of the finish and should be specified at the same time as the boards.
Freefoam’s technical download library lists a dedicated Dormer Cheek Installation Guide, a general Cladding Installation Guide, Fortex data sheets, declarations of performance, maintenance guidance and a technical and specification manual. Use the edition that applies to the profile and market being purchased; a case-study description is not a substitute for those instructions.
How long did the installation take?
Ricky told Freefoam that the featured job took a couple of weeks with scaffolding in place. The wording describes one unspecified property and does not separate surveying, render removal, repairs, battening, cladding, trim work or scaffold changes. It should therefore be treated as a contractor’s account, not a standard duration.
Programme length can change substantially when the dormer has hidden decay, difficult access, several elevations, bespoke window details or additional roof work. Weather, scaffold availability and the time needed to approve remedial work can also affect the sequence. Ask for a written programme that identifies preparation, repairs, installation and demobilisation rather than relying on a single headline number.

What does dormer cladding cost?
No current price, quotation or measured saving is provided for the Sand-colour project. Ricky said the homeowner was saving money on repair and maintenance, but the case study gives no baseline, measurement period or independent comparison. That testimonial cannot be converted into a guaranteed percentage saving or a payback calculation.

The price of your job will depend on the actual scope and quantities, including:
- Whether render removal reveals repairs to framing or sheathing.
- Total cheek area, gable ends, returns and the number of windows or doors.
- Fortex profile, colour, trims, fixings and any compatible flashings.
- Batten materials and the approved fixing arrangement.
- Scaffolding, waste removal, access restrictions and working height.
- Whether insulation, ventilation, roof coverings or structural work are included.
For a live figure, use Freefoam’s professional support and stockist route to find a local supplier and discuss availability and price. Give the supplier a measured scope and the exact Fortex profile, rather than asking for a generic “dormer cladding” price. Availability and quotations can vary by location and date.
Planning the technical details
Before accepting a quotation, obtain the documents that govern the installation. Freefoam’s downloads page identifies the following resources:
| Document or resource | What it is useful for |
|---|---|
| Dormer Cheek Installation Guide | Project-specific guidance for cladding dormer cheek areas. |
| General Cladding Installation Guide | System installation principles and requirements that apply across the range. |
| Fortex data sheets | Product information for the selected profile and finish. |
| Declarations of performance | Declared product characteristics and compliance information where applicable. |
| Maintenance guidance | Cleaning and care instructions supplied by the manufacturer. |
| Technical and specification manual | Detailed specification information for designers and installers. |
Check the revision date and make sure the installer is working from the instructions for the exact board and trim system. Confirm how the design handles window reveals, roof abutments, corners, movement, ventilation and fixing into the existing construction. Those requirements are not stated in the case-study article and should not be guessed.

Cladding versus render, tiles or a rebuilt dormer
Cladding is not automatically interchangeable with every other dormer solution. The right comparison starts with the scope: covering an existing structure is a different decision from changing its shape or adding floor area.
| Approach | Scope and appearance | Evidence available for this topic |
|---|---|---|
| Fortex cladding over existing dormer cheeks | Remove the old finish, prepare the surface with battens, install boards and matching trims. Colour and profile are selected to suit the house. | Documented in the Freefoam Sand-colour transformation; no general price, lifespan or schedule is established. |
| Render replacement | Retains a rendered appearance but uses a different preparation and finishing system. | No like-for-like quotation or performance comparison is provided. |
| Tile finish | Uses tile detailing and may alter the visual relationship with the main roof. | No comparable cost or maintenance data is provided. |
| Rebuild or extension | Changes the dormer’s geometry, roof form or usable opening; may involve structural and planning work. | Illustrated by the separate Reading case, not by the Sand refurbishment. |
Compare written quotations on the same scope. A cladding quote for existing cheeks cannot be judged against a rebuild price unless both include equivalent structural, roofing, access and finishing work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The separate Reading example: why it must not be merged with the Sand project
Freefoam also publishes a different case study from Reading. In that project, the original dormers had flat lead roofs and tiled walls. The dormers were rebuilt with hip roofs, and one was extended to create a Juliet balcony and double doors. The homeowner said tiles, render and cladding were considered, with budget influencing the decision.
That specification used Fortex Weatherboard, 170 mm width, Misty Grey, product code FCF170EMG. It is not the same product description as the Sand-colour dormer transformation: the scope, colour and construction work differ. The homeowner’s comparison to the cost of a family cinema night is an undated anecdote, not a current market price.
Read the separate account at Freefoam’s “Cladding Dormer Transformed” case study if you are assessing a rebuild or extension, but do not use its specification or anecdotal budget as a quotation for a surface re-cladding job.

Questions to ask an installer and supplier
- Is the proposal for re-cladding only, or does it include structural, roofing or insulation work?
- Which Fortex profile, width, colour and product code are being quoted?
- Are matching corner, window, verge and roof-junction trims included?
- What condition is expected beneath the render, and how will hidden defects be priced?
- Which Dormer Cheek Installation Guide and technical documents will govern the work?
- How will battens, ventilation, movement and fixings be detailed for this substrate?
- What scaffold period, weather allowance and completion date are included?
- What cleaning and maintenance instructions will be handed over?
Request the quotation in measurable units where possible: elevations, openings, board quantities, trims, scaffold, waste and provisional repair allowances. This makes competing bids comparable and exposes exclusions before work starts.
Maintenance and what the case study does—and does not—prove
The homeowner reportedly felt pleased with the result, and Ricky said neighbours and friends commented positively. Those are testimonial observations. They do not establish a measured service life, a quantified reduction in maintenance, resistance to a particular exposure, or a guaranteed appearance over time.
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance for cleaning products, inspection intervals and any restrictions. Keep the cladding system’s data sheets and declarations with the property records. If a board or trim is damaged later, identify the original profile and colour before ordering a replacement; a superficially similar panel may not match its dimensions, finish or compatibility requirements.

Where to verify the product and availability
Freefoam provides a professional products and support page with a cladding calculator, visualizer, sample request, installer resources and a stockist finder. The stockist route is the practical way to ask about local availability and obtain a current quotation. The manufacturer’s case-study page for the featured work is “Dormer Transformation”.
Before ordering, match the supplier’s description to the specification: Fortex range, profile, dimensions, colour, trims and suitability for the dormer’s exposure. Availability of an exact listing from a third-party marketplace is not established here, so do not substitute another panel without checking those details and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
Bottom line for a planned dormer makeover
The Freefoam example shows a clear method for refreshing existing dormer cheeks: strip the render, create the approved battened fixing plane, install Fortex embossed cladding in the chosen colour and finish the junctions with matching trims. It also shows why project facts must stay tied to their evidence: “a couple of weeks” is one contractor’s account, Sand is one homeowner’s selection, and no current cost or quantified maintenance saving is supplied. Use the Dormer Cheek Installation Guide, define the scope precisely and obtain a local, profile-specific quotation before committing.
