A digital multimeter can show a battery’s terminal voltage, a useful first check for whether it may be discharged. It cannot, by itself, tell you the battery’s full capacity or prove that it will work under load. For a safe reading, set the meter to DC volts, keep the leads in the correct jacks, and measure across the battery’s positive and negative terminals.
Before you test: identify the battery and work safely
Check the battery label for its type and nominal voltage, and use the battery maker’s guidance to interpret the result. The automotive voltage examples later in this guide are not universal limits for AA or AAA alkaline batteries, lithium-ion batteries, or other chemistries.
For a vehicle battery, switch off accessories before taking a resting reading. If the engine has just run, Fluke recommends turning on the headlights for about one minute and then switching them off before measuring, to remove surface charge. Follow your vehicle and battery manufacturers’ instructions if they differ.
- Inspect the battery terminals for corrosion or looseness, and check the meter leads for damage.
- Do not let a probe tip bridge the positive and negative terminals.
- When working around a vehicle, keep your hands and leads away from fan belts and other moving parts.
- Use extra care with lead-acid batteries: they contain acid and can emit explosive gas.
Set up the digital multimeter
You do not need a specialized automotive meter for a basic voltage check. Use a digital multimeter with a DC-voltage function, a COM jack, a V/Ω jack, and a range suitable for the battery. Choose compatible, appropriately rated test leads.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
- Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
- Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
- Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
- Plug the black lead into the COM jack.
- Plug the red lead into the V/Ω jack. Make sure it is not in an A or mA current jack. Measuring voltage with the red lead in a current input can short the measurement circuit, Fluke warns.
- Select DC volts, shown as VDC or a DC-voltage symbol such as ⎓. If the meter is not autoranging, select a range above the battery’s expected voltage, following the meter manual.
For more on the meter setting, see Fluke’s instructions for measuring DC voltage.
Measure across the battery terminals
- Touch the red probe to the battery’s positive terminal.
- Touch the black probe to the negative terminal. Keep the probe tips separated so they do not connect the terminals.
- Read and record the displayed voltage.
If the meter displays a minus sign, the probes may be reversed. Modern digital meters generally show the polarity this way, but consult the specific meter manual.

Interpret the reading in context
For an automotive battery, Fluke gives these approximate resting-voltage examples. They are examples for that context, not universal battery pass/fail thresholds. The Fluke page does not state a publication date; it was accessed in 2026.
| Automotive resting voltage | Fluke’s approximate interpretation |
|---|---|
| 12.6 V | Fully charged |
| 12.4 V | About 75% charged |
| 12.2 V | About 50% charged |
| Below 12.0 V | Likely discharged or weak |
A low reading may be a reason to charge the battery according to its maker’s instructions or arrange further checks. Voltage is only a snapshot: it does not establish usable capacity or show whether the battery can perform under load. Fluke describes voltage measurement as a first diagnostic step before load testing. If a battery still fails to start a vehicle or run equipment, a voltage reading alone cannot identify the cause.

- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Current, AC/DC Voltage, Capacitance, Frequency, Duty Cycle, Resistance, Diode, Continuity and Temperature.
- Thoughtful Design - Support Data Hold, Large LCD Backlit Screen, Auto Shut-off and Kickstand make the process of measurements easier. Professional level is reflected in some features include Auto-Ranging capability, and True RMS for measuring both AC Current and Voltage.
- Suitable For Many Occasions - This Multimeter is a golden partner to help to troubleshoot a variety of automotive and household electrical problems safely and accurately.
- Ensure Safety - Double ceramic fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading, and it will be more secure and reliable; F400mA/600V and F10A/600V explosion-proof ceramic fuse tubes can protect the multimeter effectively.
- Additional Tips - Please take off the cap before using the test leads. Check the manual for more usage information.
Optional: check a vehicle’s charging voltage
A reading taken while a vehicle is running is different from a resting battery reading; it concerns the charging system. Fluke says a running-engine reading above 13.0 V indicates charging voltage and gives 13.7–14.7 V as a typical alternator range under normal conditions. These are not universal pass/fail limits: use the vehicle and battery makers’ specifications for diagnosis.
For the automotive procedure and context, see Fluke’s guide to measuring battery voltage with a multimeter.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong function: select DC volts for a battery’s DC terminal voltage.
- Leaving the red lead in a current jack: move it to V/Ω before measuring voltage.
- Shorting the terminals with a probe: touch each terminal separately and keep the tips from bridging them.
- Treating one voltage reading as a capacity test: a basic multimeter reading does not replace a load test or other diagnosis.
