On common grounded 125-volt outlets, a 15-amp receptacle (NEMA 5-15R) has two straight blade slots. A 20-amp receptacle (NEMA 5-20R) has a T-shaped neutral slot. That shape identifies the receptacle configuration—not the circuit’s amperage, wiring condition, or whether a replacement is appropriate.
What the outlet patterns look like

The T-shaped slot on a 5-20R accommodates a compatible 20-amp plug. Leviton’s straight-blade catalog distinguishes the 5-15R and 5-20R configurations and lists receptacles in both 15-amp and 20-amp categories: Leviton straight-blade receptacles.
What the shape does—and does not—tell you
The face pattern tells you which receptacle configuration you are looking at. It does not establish the branch circuit’s amperage, conductor size, installation condition, or code compliance. A receptacle’s appearance alone cannot confirm that the wiring behind it is correct or that the circuit can safely supply a particular load.
Product specifications can confirm a particular model’s rating and configuration. For example, Leviton specifies its DTC15-T as a 15-amp, 125-volt NEMA 5-15R receptacle, while its CR20-T is specified as a 20-amp NEMA 5-20R receptacle: DTC15-T specifications and CR20-T specifications. These are examples of product labeling, not recommendations to replace an installed receptacle.

Should you replace a 15-amp outlet with a 20-amp outlet?
Do not decide based only on the slot pattern or on the fact that a 20-amp receptacle appears to accept a particular plug. Replacement suitability depends on the circuit and installation details as well as the electrical requirements that apply where the work is done.
- Do not infer the circuit rating from the receptacle face.
- Do not treat a matching-looking receptacle as proof that the existing wiring is suitable.
- Check local requirements with the authority having jurisdiction or consult a licensed electrician before replacement.
Why local requirements matter
Electrical code adoption and amendments vary by jurisdiction. Leviton’s Captain Code 2023 guide reproduces selected 2023 National Electrical Code text and references ANSI/NEMA WD 6 configurations, including 5-15 and 5-20 in its discussion of weather-resistant receptacles. It is a manufacturer-hosted guide, not a determination of which code edition or amendments apply at a particular property. Confirm applicable requirements with your local authority or a licensed electrician.
