Choose a stable, known location
Start with a location that remains inside the product’s labeled temperature range throughout the workday and overnight. An indoor first-aid or emergency-supply cabinet is often easier to control than an outdoor gang box, truck cab or job box exposed to weather. The sources do not require a particular cabinet or container. The right choice depends on the site’s temperature, lighting, access and security conditions.

Measure the actual environment rather than judging it by the morning temperature. A room that is comfortable at 7 a.m. can become much hotter in the afternoon, and a temporary building can fall below the allowable range overnight. If the storage area routinely approaches a limit, relocate the supply or improve environmental control before an excursion occurs.
Keep it reachable during an emergency
Accessibility is a safety requirement in practice even though the FDA sources do not prescribe a specific cabinet design. Put naloxone where supervisors, first-aid personnel and other likely responders can find it without searching. Mark the location with clear signage, include it in the site orientation and tell subcontractor leads where it is. FDA advises people to tell others where naloxone is kept and to read the product instructions before an emergency.
A lock, badge reader or key box that delays access defeats the purpose of an emergency supply. If your security plan requires controlled access, define who can open it, keep the access method available and test it with the people expected to respond. Do not conceal the supply in a personal desk, a locked vehicle or a box known only to one manager.
Protect the package from heat and light
Sunlight through a windshield, a dark metal container in direct sun and a trailer roof can create damaging heat even when the surrounding air feels moderate. Store the product away from heaters, welding areas, hot pipes, generators and other heat sources. Keep it in the original package unless the product instructions allow another arrangement; the original packaging helps identify the product, lot and EXP marking and supports the label’s light-protection direction.
Plan for mobile and changing jobsites
When a crew moves naloxone between a main office, a trailer and a vehicle, assign one person to confirm the new location meets the label before the unit is left there. Do not use a vehicle as default storage unless you have verified that its interior stays within the labeled conditions. A vehicle can become excessively hot in direct sun or cold enough to freeze overnight. Bring the supply into a suitable controlled area at the end of a shift when the vehicle cannot provide stable conditions.

Where is the expiration date?
Inspect the individual stocked unit
Find the EXP marking on the carton or the unit’s package. The cited NARCAN label shows the expiration in a year-month format. Read the marking exactly as printed; do not replace it with a date calculated from the purchase date, the delivery date or a general statement about how long naloxone usually lasts.
- Remove one unit at a time from the storage location without discarding its carton or identifying information.
- Locate the EXP marking and write the printed year-month in the site log.
- Record the product name and strength, lot number when visible, storage location and the date you inspected it.
- Return the unit to compliant storage, placing the earliest-expiring unit where it will be noticed first.
- Quarantine any package whose date is unreadable, missing, damaged or already passed until a responsible person resolves the issue.
If the date is difficult to interpret, compare it with the current package labeling or ask a pharmacist, dispensing program or the manufacturer for clarification. Do not assume that a year-month marking means a particular day unless the product’s labeling explains that convention.
Do not infer a date from a newer box
Each package has its own dating. A shipment received this month can contain lots with different expiration dates, and two units bought at different times may not share the same date. Keep the package associated with the unit so that a loose device cannot be mistaken for a different lot.
What the NARCAN shelf-life extension does—and does not—change
In 2024, the FDA announced that the shelf life for newly manufactured NARCAN 4 mg nasal spray lots would change from three years to four years. The announcement did not re-date products that were manufactured and distributed before the change.

How often should a jobsite check its naloxone supply?
The cited FDA sources do not establish a universal federal jobsite inspection interval or a required inventory form. Your company’s safety program, contract requirements and applicable state or local rules may set additional duties. In their absence, create a written schedule that is realistic for the site and increase the frequency when conditions change.

Set a routine that matches the risk
A small, climate-controlled office may need less frequent documented review than a summer road project with several mobile trailers. Whatever interval you choose, assign an owner and define what “checked” means: inspect the date, package, storage conditions, location and accessibility. A site might choose a documented monthly review as an example, with a quick visual check during shift start or first-aid checks; that is operational guidance, not an FDA mandate.
Trigger an extra check after an event
- The supply was moved to another building, vehicle or trailer.
- The storage area experienced a power loss, heating failure, flood, fire, prolonged direct sun or severe weather.
- A package was opened, dropped, wet, crushed or exposed to chemicals.
- Naloxone was used, removed for training or replaced from another site.
- A new shipment arrived or the site changed its emergency cabinet.
Document the event and the decision to return, replace or quarantine the affected unit. This creates a traceable reason for an out-of-cycle check.
What to put in a naloxone inspection log
A simple log prevents the common failure of having a product on site but not knowing whether it is current or where it belongs. Use one line per unit or package and update it whenever stock changes.

What to do after a temperature excursion or package problem
If the product may have frozen or overheated
Separate the unit from usable stock and label it as quarantined. Record what happened, when it happened and the likely temperature or location. Do not return a potentially frozen or overheated unit to service simply because it looks normal. The NARCAN label specifically says not to freeze and to avoid excessive heat above 40°C (104°F); seek product-specific advice from the current labeling, manufacturer or a pharmacist before deciding whether it can be used.
If the carton or device is damaged
Quarantine a crushed, wet, punctured, contaminated or otherwise compromised package. Do not rely on an unreadable EXP marking, and do not transfer a loose device into an unmarked bag. Obtain a replacement through your normal medical-supply process and follow local instructions for disposing of the compromised product.
If an expired unit is discovered
Remove it from emergency stock immediately, mark it clearly as not for use and replace it with an in-date unit. Follow your pharmacy, program or local authority’s disposal instructions rather than placing medical product in ordinary jobsite waste without checking the applicable direction. Update the log so the quantity and dates remain accurate.
Make the supply usable in an overdose response
Storage is only successful if a responder can identify and use the product quickly. FDA advises people to tell others where naloxone is and to read the instructions before an emergency. Include the device instructions in the cabinet and cover the location during orientation, toolbox talks and first-aid training.

- Retrieve the naloxone and read the instructions packaged with the stocked device.
- Administer it exactly as those instructions direct; do not substitute directions from a different formulation.
- The cited NARCAN label directs the user to call 911 after the first dose and stay with the person until emergency responders arrive.
- Give responders the product package, if safe to do so, and report which unit was used so the supply can be replenished.
Naloxone is an emergency response tool, not a replacement for professional medical care. Your site plan should identify who calls 911, who guides responders to the location and who documents and restocks the cabinet afterward.

When a site changes products, update its log, orientation materials and cabinet labels instead of assuming that the former product’s storage or expiration rules carry over.
Common jobsite mistakes and the fix
- Leaving stock in a vehicle: Move it to a location that can stay within the labeled conditions; vehicle interiors can become dangerously hot or cold.
- Adding a year to an older package: Keep the printed EXP date. The four-year change applies only to newly manufactured lots covered by the FDA announcement.
- Recording only the delivery date: Log the EXP marking on each unit or package.
- Keeping the supply secret: Tell crews, supervisors and contractors where it is and how to access it.
- Using an unreadable or damaged package: Quarantine it and obtain a clearly identified replacement.
- Assuming all naloxone is stored the same way: Check the exact formulation’s current labeling.
- Checking only once at installation: Add recurring reviews and event-triggered checks to the site procedure.
- Stopping after administration: Follow the product instructions, call 911 as directed and remain until responders arrive.
A practical final checklist
Before opening a jobsite, confirm that each naloxone unit passes all of these checks:
