For doughnuts you’ll eat soon, follow the bakery’s storage instructions: plain doughnuts are generally kept at room temperature, while fillings that require chilling must be refrigerated. For longer storage, freeze them in suitable airtight packaging. Because recommendations vary by product, there is no single freshness window that applies to every doughnut.
How should you store doughnuts you’ll eat soon?
Keep plain or unfilled doughnuts protected from heat and direct sunlight, and use the packaging guidance supplied by the bakery. Krispy Kreme UK says its doughnuts should stay in their original packaging at room temperature and are best eaten on the day of purchase. Krispy Kreme Australia advises keeping its doughnuts below 18°C and out of direct sunlight. These are brand-specific recommendations, not universal rules for every doughnut.
Other guidance differs: Pillsbury says unfilled doughnuts can be kept at room temperature for one to two days, wrapped in foil or placed in a plastic bag to limit drying. Use the bakery’s instructions when available rather than treating that period as a guarantee for other products. (Krispy Kreme UK; Krispy Kreme Australia; Pillsbury)
What about filled doughnuts?
Check the filling’s package or bakery instructions. Pillsbury recommends refrigerating filled doughnuts. For foods that require refrigeration, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says not to leave them at room temperature for more than two hours—or more than one hour when the air temperature is above 90°F. Keep a refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below, as FDA guidance specifies.

Refrigeration can make doughnuts less pleasant in texture: Krispy Kreme UK advises against refrigerating its doughnuts, and Doughnut Plant says refrigeration can dry them and change their texture. That is quality guidance; it does not override the need to refrigerate a filling that requires it. (Pillsbury; FDA; Krispy Kreme UK; Doughnut Plant)
Can you freeze doughnuts?
Yes. Freezing is a practical option when you need to keep doughnuts beyond their short room-temperature storage period. University of Missouri Extension recommends cooling doughnuts, packaging them, and freezing them. Its guidance gives a freezer storage time of three to four weeks and says yeast doughnuts freeze better than cake-type doughnuts. Keep the freezer at 0°F (-18°C), the temperature specified in FDA guidance.
