To keep garden seeds easier to find and better protected, dry saved seed completely, place each variety in its own labeled paper envelope, then store the envelopes in a sealed container in a cool, dry, dark place. Keep purchased packets dry and organized too. Seed life depends on both the crop and storage conditions, so test older seed before relying on it.
How do I store seeds collected from my garden?
Start with dryness. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach identifies thorough drying as the most important preparation for storing collected seed. Seeds from wet-fruited crops and dry pods need different harvesting and cleaning steps, so follow crop-specific instructions before packing. Iowa State’s guides explain the preparation and storage process in How to Harvest and Store Seeds and How to Store Seeds and Test Germination Rates.
- Clean and dry the seed. Spread it on a suitable drying surface and let it dry fully. Iowa State advises against using paper or cardboard as the drying surface. Do not seal damp seed in a jar.
- Separate varieties. Put each crop and variety in its own paper seed envelope. The envelope keeps seed lots apart and provides space for identification.
- Seal the envelopes in an outer container. Place the labeled envelopes in an airtight jar or another sealed container. University of Georgia Extension recommends this two-layer approach in Seed Saving Basics; the outer container helps limit exposure to moisture and pests.
- Choose a stable storage spot. Keep the container away from heat, direct sunlight, and damp areas. A cool closet may be sufficient; refrigeration is another option when seed is dry and protected from moisture.
How should I store purchased seed packets?
Keep the original packet labels intact and readable. Virginia Tech Extension advises sealing retained or opened packets in an airtight container and keeping it in a cool, dark location in Seed For The Garden. If you group many packets together, add a clear label to the outside of the container so you can find the right crop without opening every packet.
Where should I keep seed containers?
Prioritize a place that stays cool, dry, and dark rather than chasing one temperature as a guarantee. Extension recommendations differ: University of New Hampshire Extension gives a range of 32–41°F in its 2020 article, How do I save seeds for next year’s garden?, while UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes 45°F or lower as ideal for long-term storage in Seed Saving Basics (publication date not stated on the reviewed page). These are source-specific recommendations, not a universal promise of viability for every crop.

Possible locations include a cool closet, basement or root cellar, or refrigerator, depending on the conditions in your home. Avoid damp areas and spots exposed to heat or sun. For refrigeration, use a moisture-proof sealed outer container. After taking it out, let the sealed container warm to room temperature before opening it; University of Georgia Extension gives this handling advice to reduce the risk of moisture forming on cold seed packets. Utah State University Extension also covers collection and storage in Collecting and Storing Seeds from Your Garden.
What should I write on seed packets?

UC Agriculture and Natural Resources also recommends noting special growing conditions, including steps taken to prevent cross-pollination. You may find it useful to add the seed source or other growing notes. Clear labels help distinguish varieties and give you context when planning a future planting.
How can I organize packets so they are easy to find?
A simple system is usually enough: group packets by crop or planting season, then arrange them in a box or divider with labels facing outward. If your collection is large, keep a short inventory of what is stored and where. A dedicated seed packet organizer can make retrieval more convenient, but it is not required to protect seed; correct drying, labeling, and storage conditions matter more.

For home-saved seed, keep the paper envelopes inside the sealed outer container even if you use a separate organizer for sorting. An organizer helps with access; the airtight container is the layer intended to limit moisture exposure.
Are desiccants useful for seed storage?
University of New Hampshire Extension mentions a small amount of silica gel or powdered milk wrapped in tissue or cloth as a moisture absorber. Treat this as optional support inside a sealed container—not a replacement for drying seed thoroughly before storage.

How long do garden seeds last, and when should I test them?
There is no single lifespan that applies to all garden seeds. Crop type and storage conditions both affect whether seed will germinate, and the extension guidance cited here does not establish one expected longevity figure for all garden crops. If a packet is old or its storage history is uncertain, test a small sample before depending on it for an important planting. Iowa State Extension’s germination-testing guide explains how to check questionable seed.
