Use the charger specified for your exact Ryobi battery, charge it in a dry location away from extreme temperatures, remove it when the pack is fully charged, and follow the battery’s own operator manual for storage limits. Ryobi sells several battery systems and generations, so a rule printed for an 80V pack should not automatically be applied to an 18V ONE+ pack.
The clearest long-storage instructions available here come from the Ryobi 80V lithium-ion battery operator manual: for storage longer than 30 days, keep the pack below 80°F and away from moisture, store it at 30%–50% charge, and charge it normally every six months. Those figures are specific to that cited 80V manual, not a universal specification for every Ryobi battery.

Identify the battery and charger before you plug anything in
Start with the battery model, voltage system and charger model. The voltage and connector family determine compatibility; a charger that fits physically is not automatically approved for every Ryobi pack. The cited 80V manual says to charge an 80V battery only with Ryobi 80V battery chargers and to use the charger manual for the charging procedure.
Ryobi support says the model number is usually at the top-left of the product label. Enter that number in Ryobi’s support system to locate the applicable operator manual, parts information and repair guidance. Use that manual for charging-temperature limits, indicator meanings and any storage instructions that differ from the 80V directions described below.

Safe charging procedure
Use this sequence each time you charge a Ryobi pack. Where the exact behavior depends on your charger, the charger manual takes precedence.
- Read the labels. Confirm the battery voltage/system and the charger model. If the manual does not explicitly list the combination, stop and obtain the correct charger rather than testing it.
- Inspect before charging. Do not use a pack or charger that is damaged or modified. The 80V manual specifically warns against damaged or modified battery packs. If you see damage, remove the pack from service and use Ryobi’s support or repair instructions.
- Choose a suitable location. Charge indoors or in another dry, protected place. Keep the battery away from moisture, outdoor exposure and vehicles. Do not charge in extreme heat or cold. The cited manual does not establish a universal numeric temperature range, so do not substitute a number from a different battery system.
- Keep the contacts clear. Before installation, make sure the battery and charger interfaces are dry and free of dirt. Never place loose metal items where they can bridge the battery terminals.
- Seat the pack as the charger manual shows. Insert it fully and verify the charger’s normal indicator. Indicator colors, flashing patterns and fault messages vary by charger, so interpret them using the instructions for that charger.
- Stay alert to abnormal behavior. If the charger reports a fault, the pack becomes unusually hot, or charging does not begin as described, disconnect it and consult the battery and charger manuals. Do not bypass a fault indication or alter the pack.
- Let the normal cycle finish. Allow the charger to complete its programmed cycle. Do not repeatedly remove and reinsert a pack to force a result, and do not use an unapproved adapter or improvised power connection.
- Remove the pack when full. The Ryobi 80V operator manual states: “Remove the battery pack from the charger once it is fully charged and ready for use.” Follow the equivalent instruction in your own manual if it differs.
- Disconnect for storage. Once the pack is removed, put it in its storage location rather than leaving it on the charger or in the work area. Keep the charger itself dry and protected as directed by its manual.
- Record unusual events. If a pack repeatedly fails to charge, loses capacity quickly or triggers charger faults, note the battery and charger model numbers and contact Ryobi support. Repeatedly trying different chargers can create a compatibility problem instead of solving one.
Where to keep batteries between projects
Choose a dry, temperature-controlled place
Store the pack away from moisture and from locations that experience severe heat or cold. The cited 80V manual says not to store the battery outside or in a vehicle. A vehicle can become much hotter or colder than the surrounding air, and outdoor storage exposes the pack to dampness and condensation. Select an indoor location that remains within the limits stated in your model’s manual.
Keep terminals away from conductive objects
The 80V manual warns that an unused battery should be kept away from small metal objects that could connect its terminals. Do not toss a loose pack into a tool bag with screws, nails, keys or other metal hardware. Store the pack so its terminals cannot contact metal parts, and keep the battery separated from loose hardware during transport.
Do not store a questionable pack
A damaged or modified battery should not be placed back on a shelf for later use. Set it aside from service, avoid further charging and follow Ryobi’s support or replacement instructions. Do not attempt to open, rebuild or modify a lithium-ion pack.

Use the manual for model-specific details
Ryobi’s battery families do not necessarily share the same charging limits or storage procedure. The available material does not establish a numeric charging-temperature range for current 18V ONE+ products, for example. Find the model number at the top-left of the product label and retrieve that product’s manual before setting a seasonal routine.
Long-term storage: the 80V procedure for more than 30 days
If you will not use a battery for more than 30 days, the cited Ryobi 80V manual gives a specific routine. Treat each number as scoped to that 80V manual.

- Set the charge to 30%–50%. The manual says, “Store battery packs in a 30%-50% charged condition.” This is a storage target for the cited 80V pack, not a universal setting for all Ryobi systems.
- Select a location below 80°F. The manual says, “Store the battery pack where the temperature is below 80°F and away from moisture.” It also says not to store the pack outside or in a vehicle.
- Separate the pack from metal objects. Keep the terminals from contacting tools, fasteners or other conductive items.
- Mark a six-month reminder. The same manual says, “Every six months of storage, charge the pack as normal.” Charge it with the approved 80V charger, remove it when fully charged and return it to the specified storage condition if the pack will remain unused.
- Recheck the manual before changing the routine. If your battery is not the cited 80V model, verify its own storage percentage, temperature limit and maintenance interval instead of copying these values.
The 30-day threshold, below-80°F limit, 30%–50% charge target and six-month recharge interval are all manufacturer directions from that 80V manual. They are useful when they match your pack, but they should not be presented as a cross-system Ryobi standard.
Temperature and moisture precautions
Extreme heat or cold
The 80V manual says not to charge in extreme heat or cold. Because a numeric range was not established for every Ryobi system, do not use a generic internet temperature chart as a substitute for the manual. If a pack has been sitting in a very hot, cold or damp location, move it to a dry environment and consult the product instructions before charging.

Water and condensation
Keep the battery away from moisture during charging and storage. Do not charge a wet pack or leave it where rain, wash water or condensation can reach the terminals. If moisture is present, disconnect the pack from power if it is safe to do so, allow the area to dry and seek model-specific guidance before use.
Vehicles and outdoor sheds
The cited 80V manual specifically says not to store the battery outside or in a vehicle. A garage or shed may also experience temperatures and humidity outside the limits for your battery, so check the manual rather than assuming that any enclosed space is suitable.

What to do when charging does not work
The charger shows no normal charging indication
- Recheck that the battery and charger belong to the same approved system and that the model numbers are covered by their manuals.
- Confirm the battery and charger are dry and free of visible contamination at the interface.
- Move the setup away from extreme temperatures and follow the charger’s stated operating conditions.
- Read the charger manual for the meaning of its lights or fault codes; those meanings are not interchangeable across models.
- If the problem persists, stop trying different unapproved chargers and contact Ryobi support with both model numbers.
The pack was stored for a season
Check the storage instructions for your exact model before charging. For the cited 80V pack, a battery stored longer than 30 days should have been kept at 30%–50% charge, below 80°F and away from moisture, with a normal recharge every six months. If the pack was stored outside those conditions, inspect it for damage and use the manufacturer’s support process before putting it into service.
The battery or charger is damaged
Do not charge or modify a damaged pack. The 80V manual warns against damaged or modified batteries. Keep it away from metal objects and follow Ryobi’s repair, replacement or recycling instructions. A charger that is damaged should likewise be removed from service rather than repaired with improvised parts.

Replacement and end-of-life handling
A battery that no longer performs reliably should not be kept in service simply because it still accepts a charge. Use Ryobi support to identify replacement options for the exact battery. Ryobi battery support directs owners to The Home Depot for certain replacement batteries and to Call2Recycle for recycling information.
The Home Depot reported in March 2025 that more than 17 million pounds of rechargeable batteries had been recycled through its Call2Recycle partnership to date, including more than one million pounds collected in 2024. That is a program total, not a measurement of battery-safety incidents or a guarantee that every store accepts every battery.
For U.S. drop-off, The Home Depot describes collection bins for rechargeable batteries at designated stores, but bin locations can vary. Confirm the current instructions and the participating location before transporting a pack. Keep the terminals protected from metal during transport and do not place a damaged pack into a collection bin without first checking the site’s directions.
How to choose a replacement charger
If you need a replacement charger, begin with the battery’s model number and voltage system. Search for a charger identified for that exact Ryobi family, then verify the combination in the battery and charger manuals. Do not select a charger solely because its connector appears to fit, and do not assume that a charger for one Ryobi voltage works across all others. If the manuals do not clearly confirm compatibility, ask Ryobi support before purchasing or connecting it.
Quick Recap
Key rules to keep with the battery
- Match the battery to the charger specified in its own manual.
- Charge in a dry place, not in extreme heat or cold, outdoors or in a vehicle.
- Remove the pack once it is fully charged and ready for use.
- Keep unused packs away from small metal objects that could bridge the terminals.
- Never use a damaged or modified pack.
- For the cited 80V battery stored longer than 30 days, use below 80°F, 30%–50% charge and a normal recharge every six months.
- Use the battery model number to find the correct manual before applying any numeric limit to another Ryobi system.
- Use local Home Depot and Call2Recycle instructions for end-of-life recycling, confirming the participating drop-off location first.
