Start seeds indoors by counting backward from your local expected last frost date—or the crop’s recommended outdoor planting date—by the number of weeks listed on the seed packet. The right date varies by crop and location; there is no universal spring sowing date. Then use clean, draining containers, seed-starting mix, steady moisture and warmth for germination, strong light after seedlings emerge, and gradual hardening before transplanting.
When to start seeds indoors
Find your area’s expected last frost date and decide when each crop can safely go outdoors. Use the seed packet’s recommended indoor-start interval and count backward from that outdoor date. A last frost date is an estimate, not a guarantee: check the forecast before transplanting and follow the crop’s cold-tolerance guidance.
Crop schedules differ substantially. For example, the University of Minnesota Extension calendar lists tomatoes at 5–6 weeks indoors and broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower at 10–11 weeks. Those are Minnesota examples, not dates to apply automatically in other regions. UF/IFAS offers a broad guideline of 4–8 weeks before the suggested outdoor planting date, but that range is not a crop-specific schedule.
Count backward from your outdoor date
- Look up your local expected last frost date, or the recommended outdoor planting date for the crop.
- Read the packet for how many weeks before outdoor planting to sow indoors.
- Count backward by that interval to get a starting date, then adjust for any crop-specific instructions.
- As transplanting approaches, check local weather and confirm outdoor conditions suit the crop.
What you need to start seeds
- Seeds and labels so you can identify each sowing.
- Clean containers with drainage holes and a catch tray. Cell packs or other containers can work; reused containers are suitable if cleaned and able to drain.
- Lightweight seed-starting mix. Avoid heavy backyard soil as a default: it is not the light, porous medium recommended for starting seeds.
- Water and a bright growing area. A humidity cover can help retain moisture during germination.
- Overhead fluorescent or LED lighting if a suitable bright growing area is not available, especially when raising many seedlings.
Windowsill or overhead light?
A south- or west-facing window may be enough for a few plants, but directional light can cause seedlings to bend toward the window. Windowsills can also have temperature swings and weak light. Overhead lighting gives a more useful option when there are more than a dozen seedlings or the available window is not bright enough; a specialty grow light is not necessary for every gardener.

This system is specially designed to reduce stress on your seedlings, so you don't damage their roots. After transplanting, trays are easy to clean and reuse or simply store for next growing season. Top shelf dishwasher safe.
- SEED STARTER TIP: Many favorite vegetables, including peppers and tomatoes, must be started indoors before warmer weather arrives. Start pepper seeds 8-10 weeks before your area’s average last frost date, and tomato seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost. Check your Burpee seed packets for instructions on when and how to plant any of your herb, flower and vegetable seeds.

How to sow seeds indoors
- Prepare the container and mix. Confirm that containers are clean and have drainage holes. Moisten the seed-starting mix so it is evenly damp before sowing.
- Check the packet for depth and light needs. Sow at the stated depth and follow instructions about whether the seed needs light. Do not bury every seed by the same amount. Iowa State notes that many seeds are planted about 1/4 inch deep, while fine seeds or seeds needing light may be surface-sown or covered only very lightly.
- Label the sowing. Mark the crop and variety so you can keep track of what you planted.
- Cover, if useful, and keep warm. A clear humidity cover can help hold moisture during germination. Warm soil promotes faster, better germination; a heat mat may help warm-season crops when the soil is cool, but it is not a universal requirement.
- Keep the mix evenly moist. Check it regularly. Aim for moist, not soggy, conditions.
What to do when seedlings emerge
Remove the humidity cover once seedlings emerge and provide ventilation. Move them into strong light promptly: Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends 12–16 hours of bright light daily after emergence and says seedlings grow best around 65°F. These are extension recommendations, not universal settings for every crop; use crop-specific guidance where available.
Good light and airflow help prevent stretched, weak growth and reduce conditions that favor disease. Avoid leaving seedlings enclosed under a cover after emergence.

Harden seedlings before transplanting
Indoor-grown seedlings need time to adjust to outdoor light, wind, and temperature. Begin gradual hardening about two weeks before planting day, as Iowa State recommends, and allow roughly one to two weeks for the transition.

- Using heavy soil: Choose a light seed-starting mix rather than defaulting to backyard soil.
- Sowing all seeds at one depth: Follow each packet; small or light-requiring seeds may need surface sowing.
- Keeping seedlings covered after emergence: Remove the cover and provide airflow once sprouts appear.
- Moving seedlings straight into full sun: Harden them gradually instead of exposing indoor-grown plants to outdoor conditions all at once.
