How to Splice the Wires for a Security Camera

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The correct way to splice a security-camera cable depends on the cable type. PoE cameras use Ethernet, analog DVR cameras use 75-ohm coaxial cable, and some cameras use separate low-voltage DC power leads or proprietary pigtails. These cables cannot be repaired with one universal technique.

Whenever practical, replace a damaged run or use a purpose-built extension and coupler. If you do splice the cable, keep the connection accessible, use components rated for the cable and environment, and test both power and camera communication before concealing the repair.

Identify the cable before cutting it

What you see Likely system Correct repair method
RJ45 plug, Cat5e or Cat6 marking, connection to an NVR, PoE switch, injector, or router PoE/IP camera Ethernet coupler or proper retermination
Twist-lock BNC connector and cable resembling RG59 Analog DVR camera 75-ohm BNC coupler or matching BNC connectors
Barrel plug, screw terminal, or two conductors marked for DC power Separate low-voltage power Polarity-correct power splice
Weatherproof multi-connector or unusual camera lead Proprietary pigtail Manufacturer pinout or replacement pigtail

PoE Ethernet carries data and power over the same cable. Reolink identifies Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat7 as compatible categories for its products, specifies eight connected pins, and publishes T568B wiring for its PoE equipment. That is manufacturer-specific guidance, not a reason to assume every camera pigtail uses standard Ethernet colors. Reolink’s Ethernet guidance explains the distinction.

Analog systems commonly use RG59-style siamese cable: coax for video plus separate red and black conductors for power. Lorex distinguishes this arrangement from Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet cabling used with IP/NVR systems. Lorex’s accessory documentation shows the relevant cable types.

Should you splice or replace the cable?

Replace the entire run when the cable is waterlogged, badly crushed, corroded, repeatedly repaired, or hidden inside a wall where a new pull is practical. Replacement is also preferable for cheap molded proprietary leads and for cables that will be buried without a certified direct-burial splice system.

Splice or extend it when the undamaged cable is sound, the damaged section is accessible, demolition would be substantial, and you can install a properly rated connector inside an enclosure. An accessible junction box is usually safer and more serviceable than a hidden hand-twisted repair.

Do not bury an ordinary coupler, rely on electrical tape as the only weather seal, or place household wire nuts in a wet outdoor location.

How to splice a PoE Ethernet camera cable

The preferred repair is an accessible, rated Ethernet coupler or a replacement cable. A conductor-by-conductor twist-and-tape splice may restore continuity while damaging the cable’s pair geometry, impedance, shielding, and data performance.

  1. Power down the system. Disconnect the PoE switch, injector, or NVR port before cutting or terminating the cable.
  2. Confirm the construction. Identify Cat5e/Cat6, solid or stranded conductors, shielded or unshielded cable, and indoor or outdoor jacket rating. A waterproof connector does not make an indoor-rated cable suitable for every exterior installation.
  3. Cut out the damaged section. Leave clean, undamaged cable on both sides.
  4. Strip minimally. Do not nick conductor insulation or untwist more cable than necessary.
  5. Terminate both ends consistently. Where the camera or equipment specifies T568B, arrange the pins as follows:
Pin T568B conductor
1 White/orange
2 Orange
3 White/green
4 Blue
5 White/blue
6 Green
7 White/brown
8 Brown
  1. Join the sections with a compatible coupler. Do not put bare twisted pairs into an RJ45 socket. Use plugs, jacks, or a coupler designed for the cable’s category and conductor type.
  2. Preserve shielding. A shielded cable needs compatible shielded connectors and appropriate bonding or grounding practices. Do not mix shielded and unshielded hardware casually.
  3. Seal and support the connection. Use an outdoor-rated junction box or manufacturer-approved waterproof Ethernet connector. Add strain relief and a drip loop so the camera connector does not carry the cable’s weight.
  4. Test before concealment. Check all eight conductors, confirm link lights or NVR recognition, verify live video and recording, and test night mode and audio if fitted.

A basic wire-map tester proves continuity and pair order only. It does not necessarily prove PoE negotiation, gigabit performance, shielding, crosstalk, insertion loss, or reliability under movement and moisture. A camera that powers on can still have a defective data connection.

AIMHDUTY BNC Coupler Female to Female Connector 5-Pack and BNC Male to Male Adapter 5-Pack for CCTV Security Camera Adapter Extender Connector
  • Package include: 5pcs bnc female to bnc female connectors and 5pcs bnc male to male connectors
  • BNC connectors is used for application for cctv security camera system, DVR and so on
  • BNC adapter male to male and female to female is used to extend cable with bnc end, instead of buying a longer cable.
  • These bnc barrel connector is built with high quality material, nickel plated body and gold-plated contacts for enhanced corrosion resistance
  • Plug and play, easy to install, no loss in video quality.

Run length also requires qualification. Reolink recommends up to 100 meters for Cat5e and higher in its system guidance, while actual results depend on the camera, PoE class, cable gauge, temperature, connectors, and network topology. Cisco’s installation guidance for a referenced camera recommends cable of at least 24 AWG and suitable outdoor protection. Consult the applicable equipment documentation rather than treating 100 meters as a universal guarantee.

How to join an analog BNC camera cable

  1. Turn off the DVR and camera power.
  2. Separate the coaxial video cable from the power conductors in a siamese cable.
  3. Join the coax with a compatible 75-ohm BNC coupler, or install matching compression or crimp BNC connectors.
  4. Keep the center conductor isolated from the shield and maintain continuous shield contact. Do not crush, sharply bend, or loosely twist the coax.
  5. Splice the power conductors separately. Match positive to positive and negative to negative; verify polarity rather than relying only on color.
  6. Restore power and inspect for rolling bars, ghosting, snow, color loss, intermittent video, or loss of night vision.
  7. Measure voltage at the camera if the picture fails or the infrared LEDs cause instability.
  8. Place the completed joint in a suitable weatherproof enclosure.

Swann lists BNC female splice adapters and extension cables for compatible DVR systems. Its cable-accessory page is a useful example of matching BNC hardware to an analog system.

How to splice a 12V DC camera power lead

  1. Read the camera label or manual. Confirm voltage, polarity, connector type, and minimum current requirement.
  2. Unplug the power adapter completely.
  3. Cut back to clean copper and identify positive and negative with cable markings, continuity testing, or a multimeter.
  4. Use correctly sized crimp butt connectors or solder-and-seal connectors. Match the replacement cable’s conductor gauge to the distance and current.
  5. Insulate each conductor and cover the joint with adhesive-lined heat shrink.
  6. Put outdoor joints inside a suitable enclosure; heat shrink alone may not protect the connection from prolonged exposure.
  7. Measure voltage at the camera while it is operating, including with infrared illumination or a heater active.

Correct voltage is not enough. An adapter may have the right voltage but insufficient current capacity, causing resets, flickering infrared LEDs, or intermittent operation. Long, thin cable and a high-resistance splice can also create voltage drop.

How to repair a proprietary camera pigtail

Do not assume that an external RJ45-shaped connector means the internal wires follow ordinary Ethernet colors. Some camera pigtails contain four or six internal wires with a sequence different from a standard RJ45 cable.

  1. Identify the exact camera model.
  2. Obtain the manufacturer’s pinout or service information.
  3. Photograph and label every conductor before cutting.
  4. Use a continuity test to trace each conductor to its connector contact.
  5. Match function rather than color alone.
  6. Use a sealed connector or replace the pigtail if a replacement is available.
  7. Test power, network, video, audio, infrared, and recording before sealing the repair.

If no reliable pinout is available, replacing the pigtail or cable is safer than guessing.

XFFCSEC 10PCS BNC Connectors(Female) and DC Barrel Connector(Male) 12V 5A
  • BNC Female to Female Connectors and DC Male to Male Connector solve a problem that anyone working with BNC cabling encounters regularly — the need for a longer run than a single cable provides.BNC female-to-female coupler is used to join two BNC male cables together Simple plug-and-play (no tools required). In a fast-moving production environment that kind of flexibility has real value.
  • Compatibility - DC Power solution, compatible with all CCTV systems and other 2.1*5.5mm DC power devices like part lighting or led strips. Very versatile. This DC Power provide a very good Excellent project power connection.
  • The connectors are machined from conductive metal and perform without any discernible signal degradation — critical for SDI applications where a compromised connection shows up immediately on a monitor as noise, dropouts, or loss of signal altogether. Clean pass-through is the entire job of a coupler like this and these do it without issue.
  • The primary design intention is security camera installations, where longer permanent runs between camera positions and recording equipment are a common requirement. In that context the ten-unit pack makes particular sense — a multi-camera installation can burn through couplers quickly and having them on hand avoids the kind of last-minute sourcing that derails an otherwise smooth install.
  • In broadcast and live production the applications extend to anywhere BNC connectivity is in play — video mixers, cameras, monitors, signal processors, and related gear. For a working camera operator or video engineer these are the kind of small but essential components that live permanently in the kit and get reached for more often than expected.

How to protect an outdoor splice

  • Use a weatherproof junction box or a connector system specifically rated for the location.
  • Use cable glands or compression seals sized to the actual cable diameter.
  • Provide strain relief and a drip loop so water does not run directly into the connector.
  • Keep cable entries sealed and avoid low points where condensation or standing water collects.
  • Use cable with the required outdoor, UV, conduit, plenum, or direct-burial rating.
  • Keep the joint accessible for inspection and future service.

Amcrest and Vivotek both document installation procedures for outdoor Ethernet waterproof connectors. Amcrest’s instructions and Vivotek’s procedure illustrate why the cable gland, connector assembly, and enclosure installation all matter—not just the rubber boot.

Test the repair systematically

  1. Power: Confirm the correct voltage and polarity. For DC systems, measure voltage at the camera under operating load.
  2. Ethernet: Run an eight-conductor wire-map test, then check link negotiation, NVR recognition, live video, and stable recording.
  3. Analog video: Check image quality for noise, ghosting, bars, color loss, and night-mode failure.
  4. Camera functions: Test infrared illumination, audio, motion detection, pan/tilt, and any heater or microphone.
  5. Mechanical protection: Gently inspect strain relief and cable entry without flexing the splice excessively.
  6. Final inspection: Confirm the enclosure is closed, glands are tight, the drip loop is present, and no cable is under tension.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No power

Check PoE compatibility, all required Ethernet conductors, fully seated pins, DC polarity, supply voltage, cable length, conductor resistance, moisture, and any proprietary pigtail pinout.

Power but no network connection

Look for an open or crossed pair, inconsistent T568A/T568B termination, nicked conductors, a telephone-style connector, an incompatible coupler, or excessive untwisting. A continuity result does not guarantee usable network performance.

Intermittent video

Inspect for moisture, loose BNC hardware, poor coax shield continuity, mechanical strain, crushed cable, interference near mains wiring, voltage drop, and inaccessible or repeatedly repaired joints.

Works by day but reboots at night

This usually indicates a power problem. Infrared LEDs increase current draw, exposing an undersized power supply, thin cable, or high-resistance splice. Measure voltage at the camera while night illumination is active.

When replacement is the better repair

Situation Recommended approach
Damaged indoor PoE cable New continuous run where practical; otherwise an accessible Ethernet coupler
Outdoor PoE joint Outdoor-rated coupler inside a junction box
Analog DVR extension 75-ohm BNC coupler plus separate power splice
Buried cable Direct-burial-rated replacement or certified direct-burial splice enclosure
Near maximum cable distance Shorter continuous run or manufacturer-supported extender
Proprietary pigtail damage Replacement pigtail or documented pinout repair
Safety-critical commercial system Documented, tested repair or professional cable replacement

For difficult legacy installations, a PoE-over-two-wire retrofit device may be an alternative to pulling Ethernet, but its compatibility, distance, bandwidth, and power limits must be checked for the particular camera and endpoint. It is not a substitute for a straightforward cable replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I splice a PoE cable?

Yes, but use a compatible Ethernet coupler or properly terminate both sections. Preserve the twisted pairs, use the specified wiring standard, and test all eight conductors plus the camera’s network performance.

Can I use a regular Ethernet coupler outside?

Only if the complete coupler, cable entry, enclosure, and cable are suitable for the environment. An indoor coupler in an exposed or buried location is not an adequate weatherproof repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I connect Cat6 to a Cat5e camera?

Usually, if the connectors and equipment are compatible, but Cat6 does not compensate for a poor termination, excessive distance, or unsuitable PoE hardware.

Yes. Use a compatible 75-ohm BNC coupler or correctly installed BNC connectors, and splice the camera’s power conductors separately.

Does T568A versus T568B matter?

Use the standard specified by the camera or network equipment and terminate both ends consistently. Reolink, for example, specifies T568B for its PoE products.

Can I bury the splice?

Do not bury an ordinary coupler or tape-wrapped splice. Use a direct-burial-rated cable and a certified direct-burial splice enclosure, or replace the run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I cut the camera’s RJ45 pigtail?

Only after confirming the exact model’s pinout. Proprietary pigtails may not follow standard Ethernet color order; replacement is safer when documentation is unavailable.

Is soldering acceptable?

It can be suitable for some low-voltage DC repairs when insulated and sealed correctly. It is not automatically appropriate for Ethernet or coax, where proper connectors preserve cable geometry and impedance.
