Column casings in leisure buildings do two jobs at once: they conceal structural steelwork, concrete columns and building services, while creating a finished surface that belongs in the interior or exterior design. In hotels, restaurants, gyms, theatres and sports venues, the casing also has to tolerate frequent contact, cleaning and circulation. Encasement’s Circa, Quadra, Forma and Polyma ranges illustrate how profile, material and finish can be matched to those conditions, but the correct specification remains project-specific.
Why leisure buildings need more than a decorative wrap
A column casing is an enclosure fitted around a structural or service element. Instead of leaving a steel section, concrete pier, pipework or cable route exposed, the casing presents a deliberate architectural surface. That surface can align with walls, reception desks, bars, seating, wayfinding elements or a venue’s brand palette.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The concealment function is particularly valuable when columns pass through public areas. Services may need to rise through a floor, or a structural column may be larger or more irregular than the finished design allows. A casing creates a controlled zone around the obstruction without requiring the column itself to be rebuilt. It can also make later access, replacement or coordination easier, provided the design includes appropriate joints, removable panels or access provisions agreed with the supplier.
Appearance is only half the decision. Foyers, reception areas, dining rooms, circulation routes and fitness suites experience repeated touch, trolley movement, bags, equipment and cleaning. A casing that looks appropriate on handover but is difficult to clean or easily marked can become an operational problem. Specify the expected traffic and cleaning regime at the outset rather than treating the casing as a purely visual finish.

Where column casings are used in the leisure sector
Hotels and serviced accommodation
Hotel entrances, reception areas, restaurants and bedroom corridors often combine high visitor movement with a carefully controlled interior scheme. Casings can hide columns or vertical services while coordinating with timber effects, laminates, painted surfaces or metal details. External columns at entrances and canopies introduce weather exposure and impact from luggage, carts and deliveries, so an interior material should not automatically be carried outside.
Restaurants and food-led venues
Columns may sit in dining areas, queues, bars or service routes. The casing needs to fit the design while allowing cleaning staff to remove marks and maintain the surface. Confirm the cleaning products, splash exposure and proximity to kitchens with the design team and supplier; the published range descriptions do not establish chemical-resistance ratings or a universal hygiene classification.
Gyms and fitness suites
Fitness areas bring close contact, moving equipment and occasional impact. A casing around a structural column can protect the visual continuity of the room, but the specification should address clearances around machines, the likelihood of knocks and how damaged sections would be repaired or replaced. Jubilee 2 Gym is cited as an example of an interior solution in Encasement’s 4 October 2021 article; that reference is a manufacturer example, not an independent durability test.
Theatres, arenas and sports venues
Public concourses and auditoria can contain long sightlines and large numbers of visitors. A consistent casing profile helps columns read as part of the architecture rather than as unfinished structure. External stadium or entrance applications add rain, temperature change and ultraviolet exposure. The later trade coverage dated 17 April 2026 names hotel, stadium and gym installations, including Premier Inn and Holiday Inn examples, but does not independently assess their performance.

Material and application options
The following comparison reflects the applications described by the manufacturer. It is an orientation tool, not a technical approval matrix. No fire classification, independent wear test, warranty, lifecycle-cost study or project-specific installation detail is established by these descriptions.
| Range or material | Application described | Profiles, finish or flexibility described | Questions to resolve before specification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circa pre-formed plywood casing | Interior | Circular profiles; laminate and finish choices are available within the range description | Is the selected laminate suitable for the cleaning, impact and moisture conditions? What access or joint detail is required? |
| Quadra pre-formed plywood casing | Interior | Square and rectangular profiles; finish coordination is part of the selection | Will the corners, reveals and adjacent joinery remain aligned after installation? Is the size standard or bespoke? |
| MDF/ply casing | Interior, according to the range overview | Finish can be coordinated with the interior scheme | What edge protection, surface finish and maintenance regime are required in the specific room? |
| GRG casing | Interior, according to the range overview | Used where an interior finish and coordinated form are required | Confirm the exact system, substrate, jointing method and any fire or impact documentation for the project. |
| Forma aluminium or stainless-steel casing | Interior and exterior | Circular, square, rectangular, hexagonal and bespoke profiles; metal finishes are described | Choose the metal and finish for the exposure, expected contact, cleaning and visual brief. Confirm corrosion and fixing requirements with the supplier. |
| Polyma GRP casing | Interior and exterior | Moulded options allow shape, size and colour flexibility according to the manufacturer | Confirm mould dimensions, colour consistency, repair strategy, ultraviolet and weather suitability, and delivery tolerances. |
How to choose between the options
Start with exposure, not appearance
Record whether the casing is inside a conditioned building, in a semi-external entrance, or fully exposed. Interior plywood, MDF/ply and GRG options are described for indoor use. Forma metal and Polyma GRP are described for both interior and exterior applications. That does not mean every finish within those families is suitable for every location: the supplier and design team must confirm the selected specification, substrate, fixings and environmental limits.

Match the material to the column profile
Measure the finished column and every item that must remain inside the enclosure. Circa is described for circular columns; Quadra is described for square and rectangular forms. Forma covers circular, square, rectangular and hexagonal profiles, as well as bespoke geometries. Polyma’s moulded approach is described as flexible in shape and size. A nominal column dimension is not enough if the casing must clear brackets, pipework, movement joints, skirtings or uneven existing construction.
Define the finish as a maintenance decision
List the required colour, gloss or texture, laminate or coating, and how the casing must meet adjacent finishes. In a busy reception or gym, a finish that disguises minor marks may be more practical than a highly reflective surface, but the published sources do not provide comparative abrasion or cleaning data. Ask for samples and written cleaning guidance that match the proposed finish rather than relying on the generic material name.

Consider contact, impact and replacement
Map likely contact points: queue barriers, luggage, gym equipment, cleaning machines, seating and delivery routes. Ask whether the casing is repairable in sections, whether a panel can be removed without dismantling adjacent work, and what spare components would be available. These are project questions; the cited range descriptions do not specify a standard impact rating or replacement interval.
When a bespoke casing is justified
Bespoke work is appropriate when a standard profile cannot accommodate the column or the design. Typical triggers include a non-circular or hexagonal column, a changing plan dimension, an offset structural member, integrated lighting or signage, service access, unusual height, or a need to coordinate with a complex feature wall. Forma explicitly includes bespoke profiles, and Polyma is described as allowing moulded variation in shape, size and colour.

Provide accurate site dimensions, tolerances, floor and soffit levels, service locations, access constraints and the intended joint pattern. Confirm whether the supplier is setting out from as-built measurements, consultant drawings or a physical template. Agree who owns the dimensional check before manufacture; a casing made to an inaccurate drawing can be difficult to alter on site.
Information to send a casing supplier
- Location and exposure: state the building, room, interior or exterior position, weather exposure, proximity to kitchens or pools, and expected temperature or moisture conditions.
- Column geometry: provide plan dimensions, diameter or polygon geometry, height, plumb tolerance, offsets, base and head conditions, and any taper or transition.
- What must be concealed: show structural steel, concrete, pipes, ducts, cables, brackets, fire-stopping zones and access panels that need to fit within the enclosure.
- Traffic and wear: describe visitor numbers qualitatively, likely impacts, trolley or equipment movements, cleaning frequency and the consequences of visible damage.
- Finish intent: identify colour references, laminate or metal finish, sheen, texture, adjacent materials, sample requirements and any branding or graphics.
- Performance documentation: request the applicable fire, reaction-to-fire, smoke, moisture, corrosion, ultraviolet, impact and cleaning information for the exact build-up. None of these ratings should be inferred from the material name alone.
- Installation constraints: provide programme dates, delivery route, lifting limits, access equipment, fixing background, tolerances, protection requirements and whether installation is by the supplier or the main contractor.
- Future access: identify valves, inspection points and services that may require maintenance, and agree removable panels or demountable joints before fabrication.
Installation and coordination checks
Coordinate with structure and services
Issue the casing profile to the structural, architectural and building-services teams. Check that the enclosure does not reduce required access, obstruct fire-stopping, interfere with sprinklers or ventilation, or create an unplanned ledge. For external work, coordinate drainage and water-shedding details rather than sealing a casing around trapped moisture.

Resolve interfaces before manufacture
Detail the floor junction, skirting, suspended ceiling, soffit, beam, handrail and adjacent joinery. A small gap may be intentional for movement or tolerance, but it should be drawn and finished consistently. Confirm whether the casing terminates at a cover, collar, cornice, shadow gap or another architectural element.
Plan protection and handover
Protect finished casings from following trades and remove temporary films or coverings according to the supplier’s instructions. Handover should include approved cleaning products, touch-up or repair guidance, spare panels or components where available, and a record of the installed finish and profile. The sources do not state a standard maintenance schedule, so obtain one for the actual system.
What the published examples do—and do not—prove
Encasement’s 2 November 2022 and 4 October 2021 articles cite leisure projects including external casings for Premier Inn and Jinnah restaurant, and interior solutions for Jubilee 2 Gym and Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre. Specification Online reported the leisure-sector range on 26 May 2020 and quoted Managing Director Martin Taylor describing casings as a combination of practicality and aesthetics. These statements explain the intended role of the products, but they are company or trade-publication coverage.
The examples do not establish that one material will outperform another in every hotel, gym, theatre or stadium. They also do not publish project costs, independent comparative testing, fire classifications, warranties or measured service life. Request those documents when they are material to approval, insurance, building-control sign-off or the operator’s maintenance plan.
A practical decision sequence
- Survey the column and services. Capture the true profile, obstructions, access points and tolerances.
- Classify the exposure. Separate interior, semi-external and exterior locations and identify moisture, ultraviolet and impact risks.
- Select a profile family. Use circular, square, rectangular, hexagonal or bespoke geometry as required by the design and measured conditions.
- Shortlist materials. Consider interior plywood/MDF/ply or GRG options, and exterior-capable aluminium, stainless steel or GRP options where appropriate.
- Specify the finish and maintenance. Approve samples, cleaning instructions, repair strategy and spare-part expectations.
- Obtain project documentation. Ask for exact-system performance information, installation details, tolerances, warranty terms and responsibilities.
- Coordinate and approve shop drawings. Resolve interfaces, access panels, joints, fixings and sequencing before manufacture.
Bottom-line specification advice
Use a leisure-sector column casing as an integrated architectural and coordination element, not as a last-minute cosmetic cover. Choose the range only after confirming exposure, measured profile, finish, traffic and maintenance demands. Circa and Quadra address defined interior shapes; MDF/ply and GRG are described for interior work; Forma and Polyma extend the described options to exterior and bespoke applications. Because the available publications do not provide independent performance comparisons or costs, the supplier’s project-specific drawings and technical documentation should be part of the approval package.
