Unilock’s SkyView Roof Deck System is a coordinated set of adjustable pedestals, wind-uplift components and interchangeable surfacing products for elevated commercial roof decks. The manufacturer lists pedestal configurations from 3 to 31 inches high, slope compensation up to 6 percent and several 24- and 48-inch surfacing formats. Those figures describe product capabilities, not approval for a particular roof. A licensed architect, landscape architect or engineer must verify structural capacity, wind design, drainage, waterproofing, compatibility and code compliance for each project.
The system was presented in a sponsored Building Design + Construction feature published November 21, 2025. Treat performance and design benefits in that feature as Unilock’s product claims; project documents and professional calculations remain the controlling evidence.
What the SkyView system is—and what it is not
SkyView is an elevated roof-deck assembly rather than a single paver or pedestal. Its parts are intended to work together: adjustable supports establish the finished elevation, selected paving or decking creates the walking surface, and a compatible wind-uplift arrangement restrains designated slabs where the project requires it.

Unilock’s commercial product pages group the system into adjustable pedestals, low-profile wind-uplift waffles, a wind-uplift kit, roof-deck slabs, Ipe wood tiles and fiberglass grates that support smaller Unilock pavers. The manufacturer’s 2026 product-data document describes the pedestals as “patent pending, fully adjustable structural supports for elevating paving materials.” Patent status can change, so it should be checked in the current project documentation.
Nothing in the available product information establishes a universal wind rating, allowable roof load, service life, installation-time saving or cost reduction. A roof deck must be designed for its actual substrate, occupancy, exposure, drainage and code requirements.

| Low-profile wind-uplift waffles | Compatible product family identified by Unilock | Alternative support element within the wind-uplift assembly where the project configuration calls for it |
Do not read a component dimension as a structural rating. A 24-inch slab still requires the specified pedestal spacing, substrate condition, edge treatment and load review. Likewise, a 31-inch maximum listed height does not mean every 31-inch installation is acceptable without additional bracing, attachment or engineering review.
How the wind-uplift assembly works
Unilock describes the wind-uplift system as a combination of its Wind Uplift Kit, compatible SkyView Pedestals or low-profile waffles, and specialized Wind Uplift Slabs. The slab undercut and kit components create the concealed tie-down arrangement described by the manufacturer.
This is a project-specific restraint strategy, not a blanket wind certification. Wind pressure varies with building height, roof zone, parapets, surrounding terrain, corner exposure and the geometry of the deck. The design professional must determine whether uplift restraint is required, identify the governing wind zones and confirm that the selected kit, slabs, pedestals and attachment details are compatible with the roof assembly.

Questions to resolve before selecting the kit
- Is the deck in an interior, perimeter or corner roof zone, and what wind pressures apply there?
- Does the roof membrane or insulation permit the proposed pedestal loads and attachment method?
- Which slab, waffle or pedestal configuration is shown in the current manufacturer details?
- How are perimeter pieces, penetrations, transitions and access points restrained?
- Has the engineer reviewed the complete assembly rather than an isolated component?
Choosing the walking surface
Concrete roof-deck slabs
Concrete slabs are the primary hardscape option identified for roof decks. The wind-uplift version is listed at 24 by 24 inches and includes the undercut used by the compatible restraint arrangement. Confirm whether the selected slab is the wind-uplift model or a standard roof-deck slab; the two should not be treated as interchangeable merely because their plan dimensions match.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ipe wood tiles
Ipe tiles are listed at 24 by 24 inches. They provide a wood appearance and can be laid in a modular grid over the support system. The specification should address expected weathering, maintenance, drainage gaps, fire requirements where applicable and transitions to other surfaces. The product data establishes the tile size, not a guaranteed service life or maintenance interval.
Fiberglass grates and smaller pavers
The fiberglass grate is listed at 48 by 48 inches and provides a support surface for smaller Unilock pavers. This can broaden the visual pattern beyond the larger slab formats, but it also introduces another interface to coordinate: grate, pedestal locations, paver dimensions and edge restraints must all align. Use the manufacturer’s current layout and support guidance rather than assuming that any small paver will fit.
Pedestal height, slope and roof geometry
The published 3- to 31-inch range covers a substantial variety of finished-floor elevations, from a low build-up over a relatively even roof to a taller assembly used to clear existing conditions or create a level walking plane. Height should be measured from the approved support surface to the finished top of the selected surfacing, including any required components.

Unilock lists slope compensation up to 6 percent. That value concerns the pedestal system’s ability to accommodate a sloped substrate; it does not eliminate the need to design positive drainage or verify the roof’s actual slope. A roof may need tapered insulation, crickets, drains, overflow paths or movement joints that affect pedestal locations and finished levels.

Coordinate these elevations in the drawings
- Existing membrane, protection layer and insulation build-up.
- Drainage slopes, sumps, scuppers and overflow routes.
- Door thresholds, elevator landings, stair doors and accessible routes.
- Parapet coping, guardrails, screens, planters and other fixed edges.
- Mechanical equipment clearances and maintenance paths.
- Transitions between slabs, wood tiles, grates and adjacent roof finishes.
A specification workflow that reduces rework
- Document the existing roof. Record membrane type, insulation, protection layers, structural framing, drains, penetrations, occupied spaces below and any warranty restrictions. Obtain as-built information and verify critical dimensions in the field.
- Set the finished elevation. Establish the required walking level at doors, stairs, ramps and accessible routes. Calculate the pedestal height at high and low points, including the selected surfacing thickness and tolerances.
- Map the roof slope. Confirm where the substrate exceeds or falls within the manufacturer’s stated 6-percent slope-compensation value. Resolve drainage and leveling details before laying out a regular pedestal grid.
- Select the surface. Choose concrete slabs, Ipe wood tiles, fiberglass grates with smaller pavers or a documented combination. Confirm module dimensions, joint patterns, edge conditions, replacement strategy and maintenance access.
- Evaluate wind uplift. Have the engineer identify roof zones and required restraint. Where applicable, specify the Wind Uplift Kit with the compatible pedestals or waffles and Wind Uplift Slabs shown in current Unilock details.
- Check structural and waterproofing limits. Verify concentrated pedestal reactions, allowable loads, membrane protection, insulation compression, fire performance and attachment restrictions. Obtain written acceptance from the responsible design professionals and roof-system parties.
- Coordinate interfaces. Detail parapets, drains, doors, railings, screens, expansion joints, planters, lighting and service routes. Show removable zones where maintenance crews must reach roof equipment.
- Issue a coordinated submittal. Require product data, layout drawings, component quantities, current installation details and any engineering calculations. Review substitutions as complete assemblies, not as one-for-one pieces.
Professional and code review is mandatory
Unilock’s guide specification, revised June 2025, advises consulting a licensed architect, landscape architect or engineer to determine suitability, confirm site conditions and check code compliance. That review should cover more than the paver pattern.
- Structure: confirm the roof framing, deck, insulation and membrane can support dead, live, maintenance and environmental loads, including concentrated reactions at pedestal heads.
- Water management: preserve drainage paths, protect the membrane, maintain access to drains and provide overflow protection. Never block a drain simply to maintain a visual grid.
- Wind: apply the governing code and site exposure to the entire deck, including edge and corner conditions, screens, furniture and loose accessories.
- Accessibility: verify slopes, level changes, clear widths, thresholds and detectable edges under the applicable jurisdiction’s requirements.
- Fire and life safety: coordinate roof-covering classifications, egress routes, guardrails and separation requirements with the code official and design team.
- Maintenance: plan for membrane inspections, drain cleaning, equipment replacement and removal or reinstatement of surfacing without damaging supports.
Common specification mistakes
Using the maximum height as a design target
The 31-inch figure is a published product range, not permission to build every assembly to that height. Taller layouts can change stability, access, edge detailing and structural reactions. Specify only the height the project needs and obtain the required engineering review.
Assuming a wind kit supplies a universal rating
The available product information explains the compatible parts and concealed tie-down concept but does not provide an independently demonstrated wind value. Require project-specific calculations and current manufacturer details.

Mixing components without compatibility confirmation
Pedestals, waffles, slabs, grates and pavers have interfaces that may depend on dimensions, clips, undercuts and spacing. A visually similar substitute can change load paths or restraint performance. Request written compatibility confirmation for any proposed change.

Ignoring the roof warranty
Roofing manufacturers and installers may limit penetrations, point loads, adhesives or overlays. Review warranty conditions before approving the pedestal layout and document the protection layer and inspection access.
Designing only the typical field
Most failures in coordination occur at edges, corners, drains, thresholds and equipment. Draw enlarged details for these locations and show how the surface is restrained, cut, supported and removed.
What to request in a project submittal
A complete submittal should identify the exact SkyView components, not merely state “adjustable pedestal system.” Request the current product-data sheets, pedestal height schedule, slope and leveling details, surface layout, wind-uplift assembly details where applicable, edge and transition conditions, maintenance-removal method and installation instructions.
Include the project’s roof plan, elevations, wind zones, structural criteria, accessibility requirements and roof-warranty constraints in the review package. The design professional should sign off on suitability and code compliance before procurement. Because the sponsored feature and manufacturer pages describe a product family rather than a project design, the approved construction documents—not promotional language—must define what is installed.
Making a go/no-go decision
SkyView is worth evaluating when a commercial roof needs an elevated, modular walking surface with adjustable finished levels and a choice of slabs, wood tiles or paver-supported grates. It is not a substitute for roof engineering. Proceed only when the team can document the required height, slope accommodation, surfacing, wind restraint, structural capacity, waterproofing protection and code approvals in one coordinated design.
