Sort clean construction and demolition (C&D) waste into material streams that a nearby recycler or reuse facility actually accepts. First prevent waste and salvage usable components; then separate accepted materials as required by the destination. Keep hazardous and unknown materials out of ordinary debris, and do not touch or disturb anything suspected of containing asbestos.
Start with waste prevention and salvage
Before demolition or renovation begins, identify what can stay in place, be reused on site, or be salvaged for another user. EPA’s C&D guidance treats source reduction, reuse, and recycling as ways to divert materials, with prevention and salvage ahead of recycling in the sequence. Carefully removing reusable components can preserve their value.
Depending on condition and local reuse demand, items such as doors, windows, cabinets, fixtures, lumber, flooring, metal, and brick may be worth salvaging. Check with reuse centers, material exchanges, or potential recipients before setting aside large quantities.
Confirm the destination before sorting at scale
There is no universal curbside-style sorting list for C&D debris. Facilities differ in the materials they accept, whether they take mixed loads or require source-separated ones, and how much contamination they tolerate. Contact the intended recycler, transfer station, reuse center, or waste facility before creating piles or loading a container.

- Which materials are accepted, and which must be kept separate?
- Are mixed C&D loads allowed? What contamination, moisture, or size limits apply?
- What are the loading, delivery, and scheduling requirements?
- Are permits, licenses, registration, or other documentation required?
- Where does each recovered material go, if the facility discloses that information?
EPA recommends checking whether recyclers comply with applicable state and local requirements, including any licensing, registration, or third-party certification rules. Compare outlets by accepted materials, separation requirements, destination, distance and transport needs, fees, and applicable safety or documentation requirements. Rules vary by jurisdiction, so verify them for the project location.
Separate clean materials according to local requirements
EPA identifies a broad range of C&D materials—not just rubble—including concrete, building wood, road and roofing asphalt, gypsum drywall, metals, bricks, glass, plastics, salvaged components, and land-clearing material. The streams below are possibilities, not a universal bin plan: confirm acceptance and preparation rules with the receiving facility.
Concrete, brick, masonry, and rubble
Where an outlet exists, clean concrete and masonry may be crushed or processed into aggregate, road base, or other construction inputs. Ask whether brick and mixed masonry can be combined with concrete, and whether the facility requires metal, soil, or other attachments to be removed.

Asphalt and roofing shingles
Some processors use accepted asphalt or roofing shingles in paving or asphalt products. Roofing material may need to be separated from other debris or prepared in a specific way; follow the processor’s instructions rather than assuming it belongs in a general construction load.
Metals
Steel, copper, brass, and other accepted scrap can have recycling outlets. Keep metal apart from rubble when the facility requests it, and ask whether it accepts mixed scrap or requires particular metal types to be separated.
Wood
Clean wood may be reused or processed into engineered wood, mulch, compost, or other products, depending on the local outlet. Treated, painted, contaminated, or otherwise suspect wood can have different acceptance rules. Do not mix it into a clean-wood stream without checking with the facility.

Drywall and gypsum
Some markets recover gypsum for new products or other uses. Acceptance depends on local availability and the condition of the material, so ask about contamination limits and any required preparation before collecting drywall separately.
Glass, plastics, cardboard, and fixtures
Markets for glass and plastics vary. Reusable fixtures may be better candidates for salvage than recycling. Confirm that the intended outlet accepts each material instead of putting it in a general recycling bin by assumption. EPA notes that cardboard commonly appears in mixed C&D from home-building sites, even though it is not classified as C&D material.
Soil, rock, stumps, and vegetation
Keep land-clearing material distinct where practical and ask about the facility’s rules and possible reuse or composting routes. Soil, rock, stumps, and vegetation may not be accepted in the same load or by the same outlet.

Isolate hazardous and unknown materials
Do not mix hazardous waste with ordinary C&D debris. EPA cautions that mixing hazardous and nonhazardous waste can cause a larger amount to require hazardous-waste management, increasing the scope and cost of handling.
If you encounter unknown chemicals, containers, solvents, pesticides, lead-related material, mercury devices, PCBs, or other suspect items, stop and seek guidance from the relevant state or local environmental agency or qualified professionals. Do not assume an ordinary C&D facility can accept them.
If asbestos may be present, stop
EPA’s public guidance is direct: “If you suspect material contains asbestos, don’t touch it.” Do not disturb, remove, or self-sort suspect material. Work involving asbestos can be regulated and may require qualified assessment and trained personnel; OSHA’s construction asbestos standard covers construction and demolition work where asbestos is present. Ordinary gloves, masks, or consumer safety gear are not a substitute for assessment, required controls, or worker training.

Set up collection areas to protect each stream
Choose collection areas or containers only after confirming the facility’s requirements, expected material volumes, and site logistics. Label them clearly, use sizes that suit the project, and keep material streams from becoming contaminated during collection, storage, and transport. There is no evidence-based universal container arrangement: the right layout depends on the outlet and the site.
Why sorting matters—and what the national figures mean
EPA estimated that the United States generated 600 million tons of C&D debris in 2018, more than twice the amount of generated municipal solid waste. Separately, EPA’s sustainable C&D page reports 175,000 jobs associated with C&D recycling in 2012, citing its 2016 Recycling Economic Information Report. These figures describe different years and measures; they are not estimates of an individual project’s waste or current local recycling capacity.
