Then confirm the receiving facility’s rules, authorization and fees before loading a truck or container. In the United States, brick is construction and demolition (C&D) debris, not ordinary municipal solid waste, so state and local requirements control the practical disposal route.
The safest default is to keep recoverable brick clean and separate, ask a local C&D recycler or reuse outlet what it accepts, and use a permitted C&D disposal facility only when recovery is unavailable or unsuitable.

Why broken brick needs a separate disposal plan
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies brick as a construction and demolition material. C&D debris is handled through a different waste stream from household municipal solid waste, and states oversee solid-waste disposal under requirements that can be stricter than the federal baseline. A route that is acceptable in one county may be refused, restricted or subject to different documentation in another.

That figure covers the entire C&D stream—not bricks specifically—and should not be used as a brick recycling rate or generation estimate. EPA also reported 143.78 million tons of C&D material sent to landfill in 2018. No brick-specific national generation or recycling statistic was identified in the agency material.

Local outlets determine whether a load has value. EPA notes that brick and block are highly recoverable in many locations, while also warning that a local market may not exist everywhere. The receiving facility’s acceptance policy, not the appearance of the material alone, determines whether your load is reusable, recyclable or disposable.
Start by sorting the load into four material groups
1. Intact bricks suitable for reuse
Set aside whole or nearly whole bricks that can be handled without crumbling. Reuse outlets commonly look for sound units, but each outlet decides the acceptable condition, type, color, quantity and packaging. Bricks with light, removable mortar may still be useful to some recipients; heavily damaged pieces may be rejected. Keep this group off the ground where possible so it does not become mixed with soil, trash or other rubble.
2. Clean brick and masonry rubble
Place broken brick, concrete and other masonry in a separate pile when the material is visibly free of wood, drywall, insulation, plastic, household trash and soil-heavy debris. A recycler may process a clean mixed-masonry load, but some facilities require brick to be separated from concrete or other materials. Ask before combining anything. Do not assume a curbside program or a universal drop-off location exists.
3. Mixed construction debris
Loads containing brick plus wood, drywall, roofing, packaging or general demolition waste usually need further sorting. A mixed load may be accepted by a C&D facility, charged under a different rate, or refused by a masonry recycler. Pull out recoverable brick and obvious contaminants before transport if the facility’s rules make that worthwhile.
4. Suspected hazardous or unknown material
Stop ordinary sorting if the brick or attached material may contain asbestos, lead, PCBs or another regulated constituent. The presence of an unknown coating, insulation, fireproofing, dust or residue is a reason to isolate the area and obtain guidance from the state environmental agency or a qualified professional. Do not treat a potentially contaminated load as clean masonry.
Step-by-step sorting workflow on the job site
- Choose a controlled sorting area. Use a stable location away from storm drains, public walkways and vehicle paths. Mark separate spaces for reusable brick, clean masonry, mixed debris and questionable material.
- Inspect before breaking or loading. Look for intact units, attached materials, unusual dust, coatings and debris from other trades. If contamination is suspected, stop that portion of the work rather than spreading it through the pile.
- Remove obvious non-masonry items. Separate wood, drywall, metal, plastic, insulation, soil and household waste when the intended recipient requires a clean load. Keep each recovered stream in a container or pile that will not be recontaminated.
- Keep reusable brick identifiable. Stack sound bricks separately from fragments. Avoid dropping them into a rubble container where they can be damaged or become difficult to retrieve.
- Ask the receiving facility before final loading. Confirm whether it accepts broken brick, brick with mortar, mixed concrete and masonry, the permitted quantity, vehicle and packaging, delivery hours, and fee rules. Ask whether the material is destined for reuse, aggregate processing or disposal.
- Document the decision. Record the facility name, contact person, acceptance instructions and any authorization, registration or certification information supplied to you. Keep the record with the project waste log.
When intact bricks should go to reuse
Reuse is generally the highest-value route for sound bricks because it keeps a usable product from becoming aggregate or landfill material. EPA identifies bricks among materials commonly available through reuse centers. That does not guarantee that a center near you will accept your particular batch.
Check condition and quantity
Before contacting an outlet, estimate the number of whole bricks, note whether they are standard or unusual sizes, and describe any mortar or paint. Photographing the stack can help the recipient decide whether an inspection is worthwhile. Do not promise a buyer or reuse center that every piece is usable; let the recipient set the grade.

Store for a clean handoff
Place reusable bricks on pallets or another stable base, cover them against mud, and keep them away from demolition dust and mixed waste. Stack low enough to prevent collapse and leave access for safe loading. If the outlet requires boxed, strapped or palletized material, follow its instructions rather than improvising packaging.
Know when reuse is not practical
Very friable brick, pieces contaminated with unknown substances, or a quantity below the outlet’s minimum may not be worth transporting. If no reuse outlet accepts the material, move it to the clean-masonry decision path instead of leaving it exposed on the site.
Recycling clean brick and masonry rubble
Brick recyclers and C&D processors may crush clean masonry into aggregate or other construction material. EPA states that local recycling markets may exist for non-hazardous demolition materials and land-clearing debris. The wording matters: “may exist” is not a promise of a facility, a free drop-off or acceptance of every load.
Confirm the exact acceptance specification
Ask whether the facility accepts:
- Broken brick by itself.
- Brick with mortar attached.
- Brick mixed with concrete or block.
- Loads containing small amounts of soil.
- Loose material, palletized material or containerized material.
Also ask about maximum piece size, truck type, minimum or maximum quantity, delivery hours and whether an appointment is required. Facilities can change specifications when their processing equipment or end market changes.

Separate enough to protect the load’s value
Cleanliness requirements are local. One processor may accept a combined concrete-and-brick load; another may require separate piles. Remove trash and non-masonry materials whenever practical, but do not wet, crush or chemically clean the material unless the recipient specifically instructs you to do so. Unapproved processing can create dust, damage equipment or turn an acceptable load into a rejected one.
Check the recipient’s status
EPA advises checking a recycler’s compliance, licensing or registration and, where applicable, third-party certification. Ask which authorization covers the facility’s operation and whether it accepts your material for recycling rather than disposal. A business that advertises aggregate may still reject a small, dirty or contaminated load.
Using clean brick as fill, subbase or driveway bedding
EPA lists clean brick, concrete and masonry as materials that may be reused on site for fill, subbase material or driveway bedding. This is a potential use, not blanket permission to bury demolition rubble. The project must be suitable for the material, and state and local requirements still apply.

Check the planned use before placement
Identify whether the material will support a slab, roadway, driveway, trench, landscape feature or another purpose. The required grading, drainage, compaction and bearing performance can differ substantially. If the work affects a building foundation, public way or engineered pavement, obtain the project designer’s or engineer’s specification before placing masonry.
Use only clean, known material
Do not place brick that may contain asbestos, lead, PCBs or unknown residues into fill. Keep drywall, wood, insulation, household trash and excessive soil out of the reuse stream. If you cannot establish that the material is clean, route it for professional evaluation rather than concealing it under a finished surface.
Verify local requirements
Contact the local building, public-works or environmental authority when the work is regulated or close to a property line, drainage feature or public road. Ask whether the proposed fill or bedding material needs approval, testing, documentation or a specific placement method. The fact that a material is inert-looking does not remove local permitting requirements.
Disposal when no recovery route is available
If no reuse outlet or recycler accepts the brick, use a facility authorized to receive the type and quantity of C&D debris. EPA identifies C&D landfills as facilities that receive C&D debris. They generally do not receive hazardous waste unless they are specifically permitted for it.
Confirm the facility before hauling
Give the facility an accurate description: clean brick, mixed masonry, or mixed C&D debris; approximate volume; and any attached materials. Ask whether it accepts contractor or self-haul loads, what vehicle and packaging rules apply, and how charges are calculated. Obtain written instructions when possible so the driver is not turned away after loading.

Do not combine a clean load intended for a recycler with waste that the recycler excludes. A mixed container can eliminate the recycling option and create additional handling or disposal charges. If the facility offers separate tipping areas, follow its directions and retain the receipt for project records.
Apply the stricter local rule
State and local requirements can exceed federal criteria. A city, county or state may regulate transport, storage, placement of fill, asbestos-containing material, storm-water controls or facility licensing. When requirements conflict, ask the responsible environmental or building authority which rule applies to your site and material.

What to do if contamination is suspected
Asbestos, lead, PCBs and other harmful constituents change the job from ordinary masonry cleanup to a regulated-material question. Warning signs can include suspect insulation or fireproofing attached to brick, old coatings that are flaking or dusty, unusual odors, laboratory labels, or demolition from a building known to contain regulated materials.
- Stop disturbing the suspect material. Do not crush, sweep, blow or load it with clean brick.
- Restrict access. Keep workers and the public away from the area until the material is evaluated.
- Contact the state environmental agency. EPA’s emergency demolition guidance directs people to the state agency when hazardous or unknown materials are discovered.
- Use qualified specialists where required. Sampling, removal, packaging and transport may require trained or licensed personnel under applicable law.
- Tell every prospective facility the truth. A recycler or landfill cannot select the correct handling route if the load is described only as “brick.”
EPA’s emergency demolition page is aimed at structurally unsound or disaster-damaged buildings. Its caution about hazardous or unknown materials is relevant here; its emergency operational instructions should not be treated as a general do-it-yourself procedure for routine brick cleanup.
Questions to ask before you load a truck or container
Use this checklist with a reuse center, C&D recycler, masonry processor, landfill or local authority:
- Do you accept broken brick, and do you accept brick with mortar attached?
- Can brick be mixed with concrete or block, or must each material be separated?
- How clean must the load be regarding wood, drywall, soil, trash and other rubble?
- Is the material accepted for reuse, aggregate processing, or disposal?
- What quantity, vehicle type, packaging and delivery-hour rules apply?
- Do you require an appointment, manifest, profile or other paperwork?
- What fees apply to this material and quantity?
- What authorization, registration or certification covers the receiving facility?
- What should I do if the load contains suspected asbestos, lead, PCBs or another unknown substance?
These questions reflect EPA’s direction to identify local markets and check recycler compliance, licensing or registration and certification. National guidance does not establish universal answers, so the recipient’s current instructions control.
Transport the material without losing the sorting work
Protect the vehicle and the route
Use a vehicle or container rated for the load’s weight and volume. Brick is dense; a container that looks only partly full can still be overloaded. Distribute weight evenly, keep the load below the container’s safe capacity, and secure or cover loose pieces so they cannot fall onto the road. Follow the vehicle operator’s and facility’s loading instructions.
Prevent cross-contamination
Keep reusable bricks on a separate pallet or in a dedicated section. If a recycler requires a clean masonry load, do not use a container that still contains drywall, trash or soil from an earlier job unless it has been cleaned to the recipient’s standard. Photograph the sorted loads before departure if the project requires proof of segregation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlan the receiving visit
Bring the facility’s acceptance confirmation, project contact details and any required paperwork. Have a backup plan only if the first facility confirms that it can receive the material; never divert a questionable load to an unverified site.

Choosing among reuse, recycling, on-site use and disposal
| Route | Best material condition | What controls acceptance | Primary check before transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reuse outlet | Intact, sound bricks | Outlet’s condition, type and quantity requirements | Send a description or photos and confirm it wants the batch |
| C&D recycling | Clean brick or masonry rubble | Local market and required separation or cleanliness | Ask whether brick, mortar and mixed masonry are accepted |
| On-site fill, subbase or driveway bedding | Clean masonry suitable for the planned work | Project performance and state or local requirements | Verify suitability, drainage and any approval with the project authority |
| C&D disposal facility | Material without an available recovery outlet | Facility authorization and load rules | Confirm the facility accepts the material and quantity |
Contamination is a separate decision axis. Suspected asbestos, lead, PCBs or unknown substances require a stop-and-check response rather than a choice among the four ordinary routes.
Common mistakes and the correction
Putting every brick in one container
This destroys the distinction between reusable units and rubble and can make a clean recycling load appear mixed. Correct it by establishing the four piles before demolition or cleanup starts.
Assuming “inert” means “accepted everywhere”
Brick may be recoverable, but local markets and facility rules vary. Correct it by calling the intended recipient and describing the material precisely.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using rubble as fill without checking the project
Brick can be suitable for fill, subbase or driveway bedding in the right application, but the material and placement must meet project and local requirements. Correct it by obtaining the specification before covering the material.
Hauling a suspect load as ordinary masonry
Unknown or hazardous constituents can trigger different handling and disposal obligations. Correct it by isolating the material and contacting the state environmental agency or qualified specialist.
Assuming a recycler is automatically licensed
EPA recommends checking compliance, licensing or registration and certification where applicable. Correct it by asking what authorization covers the facility and retaining the answer.
Final job-site checklist
- Whole bricks have been separated and protected for possible reuse.
- Clean masonry rubble is isolated from wood, drywall, soil, trash and other debris.
- Any mixed load is described honestly to the receiving facility.
- Suspect asbestos, lead, PCBs or unknown material is isolated and not treated as clean masonry.
- The intended reuse center, recycler or disposal facility has confirmed acceptance.
- Vehicle, container, quantity, packaging, delivery hours and fee rules are understood.
- Facility authorization, registration or certification information has been checked where applicable.
- On-site fill or bedding use has been reviewed for project suitability and local requirements.
- Receipts, photographs and acceptance instructions are retained with the project records.
The practical sequence is simple: preserve sound bricks, keep clean rubble identifiable, verify a local recovery market, use on-site masonry only where the project and authorities allow it, and send unrecoverable material to an authorized C&D facility. Stop and obtain specialist or state-agency guidance whenever contamination is possible.
