Size an off-grid home-energy system from four separate requirements: daily energy use in kilowatt-hours, simultaneous and startup power in kilowatts, solar production during the least-sunny design season, and the battery autonomy you want when solar production is inadequate. The result is not one universal panel or battery size. It is a coordinated specification for the PV array, usable battery energy, inverter output, charge controls, wiring and protection.
A defensible design needs your location, appliance-level or interval load data, seasonal use, shading and solar access, autonomy target, and backup-generator plan. Without those inputs, any exact system size is only a guess. The process below lets you calculate a transparent first pass and identify the figures an installer or engineer must verify.

Off-grid sizing becomes clearer when each component answers a different question. Keeping these questions separate prevents the most common design errors.
| Requirement | Question it answers | Main design output |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | How much electricity must the home use over a day or season? | Daily load in kWh and a seasonal load profile |
| Power | How much load may run at once, and what surges occur when motors start? | Continuous and surge ratings for the inverter and battery |
| Solar resource | How much useful PV production is available in the critical season? | Array size, orientation, tilt and loss assumptions |
| Autonomy | How long must selected loads operate without adequate solar recharge? | Usable battery energy and any generator or load-shedding strategy |
The battery’s stored energy and its deliverable power are separate specifications. A battery may hold enough kilowatt-hours for a day yet be unable to provide the kilowatts needed to start a well pump. Likewise, a large inverter cannot make a small battery deliver more current than its approved discharge limit.

Start with a complete load inventory
List every appliance, fixed load and intermittent device that the stand-alone system might serve. For each item, record its rated or measured watts, hours of operation per day, days of operation per week or month, and the season in which it operates. Include lighting, refrigeration, water pumping, communications, heating controls, workshop tools, cooking equipment, ventilation, security equipment and standby consumption from electronics.
Use measured data when it is available
Nameplate wattage is a starting point, not a guarantee of actual consumption. A refrigerator cycles rather than running continuously; a pump may run for short periods; electronic equipment can draw power while apparently idle. Use a plug-in meter, circuit monitor or manufacturer energy data where practical. Keep the measurement period long enough to capture normal cycling and unusual but important events.
Separate seasonal and critical loads
Do not hide winter heating, summer cooling, irrigation, snow-melt equipment or workshop use inside an annual average. Create separate profiles for the seasons that matter at your site. Also mark each load as critical, deferrable or optional. A critical-load panel might keep refrigeration, lighting, water, communications and medical equipment operating while allowing discretionary loads to be shed during a cloudy spell. Reducing the load set can reduce both battery and array requirements.
Calculate daily energy
For each appliance, use:
daily energy (Wh) = appliance power (W) × hours used per day
Add the appliance results and divide by 1,000:
daily energy (kWh) = total watt-hours ÷ 1,000
Apply the calculation separately to each season and to the critical-load set. If a device operates on a schedule rather than every day, use its average occurrence only when that average does not conceal a reliability problem; a pump that must run for a specific number of hours on a dry day still needs enough instantaneous power and energy on that day.
Measure peak and startup power separately from energy
Daily kWh tells you how much energy must be supplied over time. Inverter selection depends on the highest combination of loads that may operate simultaneously. Make a second list showing each load’s continuous watts, likely simultaneous combinations and starting surge.
Account for motors and compressors
Well pumps, pressure pumps, refrigerators, freezers, air compressors, fans and power tools can draw a brief starting current several times higher than their running current. The U.S. Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory describe an off-grid inverter as needing to supply such current surges. Check the appliance documentation for locked-rotor or starting information where it is provided, and use the inverter manufacturer’s surge duration and overload curves rather than a single headline number.

Size battery power as well as inverter power
The inverter may be rated for a surge that the battery cannot support at the chosen DC voltage. Verify the battery’s continuous and peak discharge current, the duration allowed for a peak, temperature derating and the number of parallel battery units. Convert the expected AC load to approximate DC current using the actual battery voltage and inverter efficiency; the final limits must come from the equipment documentation.
Choose an autonomy target deliberately
Autonomy is the time the selected loads can be supported without the expected solar recharge. It is a design choice shaped by weather risk, generator availability, budget, conservation practices and the consequences of an outage.
Use planning ranges, not universal rules
National Renewable Energy Laboratory guidance titled Understanding Off-Grid (2024) says systems generally plan for one to three days of autonomy in the context described by that document. Another NREL publication, Technology Tips for Solar + (2024), says residential off-grid storage may cover up to several days. These are planning contexts, not mandatory prescriptions for every house.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA remote home with difficult fuel delivery and life-safety loads may choose more storage. A home with a reliable generator and a willingness to conserve can choose less battery capacity and operate the generator during prolonged cloudy weather. State the loads included in the autonomy calculation; “three days” has no useful meaning if it refers to a reduced emergency load rather than the whole house.
Calculate usable battery energy
Begin with the critical daily energy and your chosen autonomy:
battery usable energy (kWh) ≈ daily energy to be served (kWh/day) × autonomy (days)
This is the energy that can reach the loads, not the battery’s nameplate capacity. Increase the nameplate capacity to account for the permitted depth of discharge, inverter and wiring losses, charging losses, temperature effects and any reserve you intentionally keep unavailable. The battery manufacturer’s warranty and operating limits define the usable fraction; do not substitute a generic percentage for those conditions.

Keep AC and DC energy accounting consistent
If your load inventory is measured at household AC outlets, include the losses in converting battery DC energy to AC. If some loads are supplied directly on the DC side, account for them separately. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that storage is not perfectly efficient because energy is lost during conversion and retrieval. A battery-monitoring system should report both state of charge and energy flowing through the system so the assumptions can be checked after installation.
Check the battery’s power limit
After calculating kWh, compare the battery’s permitted discharge kW with the simultaneous load and starting surge. A battery with adequate energy but inadequate output power will cause inverter shutdowns or load failures. The comparison must include battery voltage, maximum current, thermal limits, cable ratings and the number of battery modules operating in parallel.
Size the PV array for the critical season
The array must supply the home’s loads and restore the battery with the sunlight actually available at the site. Array rating depends on location, orientation, tilt, shading, snow, dirt, temperature, weather and losses in the modules, wiring, charge controller, battery and inverter.
Use the least-sunny period that defines reliability
An annual-average production estimate can hide a winter deficit. Identify the month or season when solar availability is lowest while your demand is highest, then use local monthly production estimates or a validated design tool for that period. State the assumptions for tilt, azimuth, shading, snow cover, temperature and system losses. The Department of Energy explains that array tilt is determined by local latitude, orientation and load requirements, and identifies shading and weather as factors affecting output.

Relate array production to both load and charging
On a typical design day, the array must cover the day’s direct consumption and provide enough surplus to replace the battery energy used previously. A cloudy-season design may require substantially more PV than an annual-energy calculation suggests. If the strategy deliberately uses a generator during extended low-sun periods, document that operating plan instead of silently reducing the array and calling the result fully solar-reliable.
Avoid universal panel-to-battery ratios
There is no defensible panel-to-battery multiplier that works for every climate, load profile and battery chemistry. Two homes with the same daily kWh can need different arrays because their winter irradiance, shading, battery voltage, generator policy and recharge time differ. The array should be selected from site production and operating assumptions, then checked against charge-controller voltage and current limits.
Select the inverter and charge equipment
Continuous and surge output
The inverter converts battery or PV DC electricity to household AC and, in a stand-alone system, establishes the local AC voltage and frequency. Its continuous rating must cover the intended simultaneous loads after any environmental derating. Its surge rating, surge duration and overload behavior must cover motor and compressor starts. The Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory describe the off-grid inverter’s grid-forming role this way: “In this system configuration, the inverter acts as a voltage source, which is in contrast to the grid-tied system.”

Charge-controller limits
For a DC-coupled design, verify the controller’s maximum PV input voltage, short-circuit current, operating current and battery charging current. Check cold-weather open-circuit voltage, because module voltage rises as temperature falls. For AC-coupled or hybrid designs, verify how the inverter, battery charger and PV inverter coordinate when the battery is full or loads are low.
Voltage and current compatibility
Every component must agree on nominal battery voltage and allowable operating range. Confirm that array voltage stays within controller limits in the hottest and coldest expected conditions, that battery current stays within charge and discharge limits, and that conductors, fuses, disconnects and busbars are rated for the calculated current. Monitoring, firmware and communications requirements can also affect whether components work together.
Understand the complete off-grid architecture
A home system normally includes PV modules, mounting, a battery bank, an inverter, charge-control equipment where required, DC and AC disconnects, overcurrent protection, grounding and distribution equipment. A generator may be integrated for prolonged low-sun periods, unusual loads or emergency recovery.
Grid-tied PV alone is not an off-grid backup system. Ordinary grid-connected systems generally disconnect during a grid outage for safety. Independent operation requires an inverter and storage configuration designed to form and regulate a local grid, with controls that isolate the premises from the utility system when applicable.
A practical sizing workflow
- Define the operating brief. Record the location, occupancy, critical loads, seasons of operation, acceptable conservation measures, generator availability and desired autonomy.
- Build the load inventory. Record watts, hours, operating frequency and season for every appliance. Measure representative circuits where possible.
- Calculate seasonal daily kWh. Sum appliance watt-hours, convert to kilowatt-hours and preserve separate winter, summer and critical-load profiles.
- Map simultaneous loads. Identify the largest normal combination and every motor or compressor that can start while another load is running.
- Set autonomy. Choose the number of days for the defined load set, using weather exposure and backup strategy rather than a blanket rule.
- Calculate usable battery energy. Multiply critical daily kWh by autonomy, then convert to nameplate capacity using the selected battery’s usable fraction and conversion losses.
- Check battery power. Compare continuous and surge load requirements with battery current, inverter input current and thermal limits.
- Model the design season. Use local monthly solar production, shading and weather assumptions to determine whether the array can run loads and recharge the battery during the least-sunny period.
- Select inverter ratings. Match continuous output, surge output and surge duration to the simultaneous-load and startup analysis.
- Verify charge-control and electrical limits. Check PV voltage, current, battery voltage, charging current, conductor ampacity, protection and disconnect ratings under hot and cold conditions.
- Test operating scenarios. Review a normal day, a high-load day, several cloudy days, a battery at minimum state of charge, generator operation and a motor start while other loads run.
- Obtain a code-compliant design review. Confirm equipment listings, clearances, fire and electrical requirements, permitting, grounding and installation details for your jurisdiction.
Compare proposed systems on the numbers that matter
| Comparison metric | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Usable battery energy (kWh) | Energy available to the defined AC and DC loads after permitted depth of discharge and conversion losses | Determines how long loads can run before recharge or generator operation |
| Continuous and surge power (kW) | Inverter output, surge duration and battery discharge capability | Determines whether simultaneous loads and motor starts succeed |
| Autonomy | Hours or days for the selected load set without adequate solar input | Shows resilience during cloudy weather and the effect of load shedding |
| Seasonal PV production | Lowest-sun-period output after shading, temperature and system losses | Reveals whether the battery can be restored when reliability matters most |
| Compatibility | Battery voltage, inverter and controller voltage/current limits, communications and expansion provisions | Prevents a nominally large system from being electrically incompatible |
| Backup strategy | Generator integration, fuel logistics, automatic controls, conservation and maintenance | Defines what happens when weather exceeds the battery and array design |
Common sizing mistakes and their fixes
Using an electric bill as the whole design
A monthly bill may show total energy but not which appliances created it, when they operated or which loads are seasonal. Rebuild the demand from appliance or interval data and identify critical circuits.

Designing from annual-average sunshine
Annual averages can conceal a winter shortfall. Use the least-sunny relevant season, realistic shading and weather losses, and specify generator support if that is part of the plan.
Assuming a universal autonomy requirement
One to three days is generalized NREL planning guidance in one context, while another NREL document discusses storage lasting up to several days. Neither is a universal residential standard. Choose autonomy from risk, budget, generator access and the loads that must remain on.

Most ordinary grid-connected PV systems shut down during a utility outage. Independent operation needs a properly configured grid-forming inverter, storage and safe isolation equipment.
Buying a kit before checking ratings
A packaged system can simplify procurement, but its PV voltage, controller current, battery limits, inverter surge capability, environmental ratings and expansion path still need to match your site and load inventory. A product label does not replace a compatibility check.
Safety, code and professional review
This method is educational sizing guidance, not a final electrical design. Batteries can deliver dangerous fault current, PV circuits can remain energized in sunlight, and incorrect isolation or grounding can create shock and fire hazards. Confirm equipment listings, installation clearances, ventilation or thermal requirements, disconnect locations, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, grounding, fire separation, permitting and inspection rules with the authority having jurisdiction and qualified professionals.
Before purchase or installation, provide the designer with your location, interval or appliance-level load data, seasonal profiles, solar-access information, autonomy target, generator assumptions and the exact equipment specifications under consideration. Ask for written calculations showing usable battery energy, continuous and surge power, design-season PV production, loss assumptions and operating limits.
Bottom line
Size an off-grid system by matching four things: the home’s seasonal energy demand, its highest simultaneous and startup power, the PV production available in the least-sunny design period, and the autonomy required for the chosen loads. Calculate usable battery kWh separately from battery and inverter kW, include conversion losses and permitted operating limits, then verify every voltage, current and control interface across the array, battery, inverter, charge equipment and protection. Until those site-specific inputs are known, no single panel count or battery size is technically responsible.
