For a simple handwritten signature, use a fine-point marker; for a repeatable logo, consider a branding iron. Test the complete marking and finishing process on scrap from the same species before touching the finished piece.
What to include in a maker’s mark
A signature is most useful when a future owner can identify who made the piece. Use a legible full name or a distinctive mark you use consistently; initials alone may not identify you later. Consider adding the year and wood species as well. The American Association of Woodturners recommends a legible signature, species, and year, while noting that some non-archival pen marks in its collection had faded. It does not provide a controlled comparison or a guaranteed lifespan for any marking method. American Association of Woodturners, August 2020.
Where to sign
For furniture and household pieces, an underside, bottom, or other protected location is a practical default: the mark stays discreet and is less exposed to handling and abrasion. WOOD Magazine recommends signing and dating inconspicuously before the final coat of finish. WOOD Magazine.
Choose a spot that remains accessible to someone who wants to find the maker’s mark, rather than hiding it inside a joint or beneath permanent hardware. For a label carrying contact information or a longer message, avoid surfaces likely to be rubbed or struck.

Choose a marking method
The right approach depends on whether you want handwriting or a repeatable logo, how much information the mark must carry, the wood’s color, and how the mark fits into your finishing sequence.
| Method | Best suited to | Tradeoffs and preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Fine-point permanent marker | A quick, personal name, date, or short note. | Woodcraft suggests black ink for better resistance to fading than other colors, but ordinary marker ink should not be assumed archival. Test for blotching on bare scrap and smearing beneath the intended wipe-on finish. A clear sealer and finer point may help if the writing bleeds. Woodcraft. |
| Branding iron | A repeatable shop name or logo, especially if you mark multiple pieces. | Brand bare wood; heat, time, and pressure vary by species, so practice on same-species scrap. A burned mark can be hard to see on dark wood; a light-colored inlay or inset placard can improve contrast. Woodcraft and WoodWorkers Guild of America. |
| Powered engraving tool | A hand-controlled incised name or short message. | Smooth, consistent writing takes practice, and shallow engraving may be difficult to see. Woodcraft says engraving on a finished surface can make the letters clearer. Woodcraft. |
| Metal letter or number stamps | A date, number, or short stamped message. | Test the hammer force on same-species scrap. Woodcraft suggests filling the impressions with paint, then wiping the surrounding surface to make the mark easier to read. Woodcraft. |
| Medallion or engraved nameplate | A designed logo or more information than a short signature can hold. | A medallion can be fitted into a recess and epoxied; it may be installed before or after finishing. An engraved nameplate is another attached option. Woodcraft. |
| Paper label | Contact information or a special message, such as for a gift. | Keep it away from abrasion and impact. Woodcraft recommends black ink and a protective clear shellac or varnish over the attached label. Woodcraft. |
Plan the mark around the finish
Marking and finishing are a single process: the finish can affect legibility, and some marking methods can be damaged or altered by heat or liquid. Match the order to the technique rather than assuming every mark belongs under the final coat.

- Stay-cool Handle: Improved comfort and operator safety ensured with stay-cool handle
- Accuracy and Precision: Improved accuracy in tasks with reduced tip-to-grip distance
- Heat Deflector: Deflects heat away from your hand, allowing a comfortable woodburning experience
- Integrated Safety Rest : On-board rest holds iron when not in use, reducing the risk of injury or damage to your workspace
- Quick Tip Change: Easily replace worn tips or change tip applications
- Marker: Try the marker on bare scrap and apply the same finish you intend to use. A felt-tip mark can be placed before the final coat, as in WOOD Magazine’s example, but wipe-on finish may smear some inks. Let the mark dry and check the result on scrap first. WOOD Magazine and Woodcraft.
- Brand: Apply the brand to bare wood. Branding over varnish can scorch the finish, and the result varies with species and technique. WoodWorkers Guild of America.
- Engraving: Woodcraft notes that engraving a finished surface can improve letter visibility, so this method may be done after finishing. Practice first to avoid an uneven mark. Woodcraft.
- Medallion or label: Follow the chosen attachment and protective-coating method; a recessed medallion may be installed before or after finish, while a label should be protected and placed away from wear. Woodcraft.
A reliable way to test your setup
- Use an offcut of the same wood species, preferably with similar grain and surface preparation to the project.
- Make a sample mark at the size and location you intend to use. For a brand or stamps, test pressure and dwell time; for a marker, check letter sharpness and bleed.
- Apply the same finish system, including the same wipe-on or brushed coats and drying intervals.
- Inspect the finished sample for legibility, smearing, blotching, scorching, and contrast. Adjust the method or placement and test again before marking the actual piece.
Woodworking sources offer practical examples rather than controlled testing of ink longevity or universal finish compatibility. Testing your own species and finish combination is therefore more dependable than assuming a particular pen, brand, or sequence will behave the same on every project.

If the piece needs only a name and date, start with a discreet handwritten mark on scrap and check it beneath the intended finish. If you make work regularly and want the same logo on each piece, a branding iron is a more repeatable option, provided the design will read clearly on the wood you use. If the mark needs a logo, contact details, or a longer message, a medallion, nameplate, or protected label offers more room. Kelly Dunn of the American Association of Woodturners recommends considering a vibrating engraver, pyrography tool, or archival ink; the association’s account of faded non-archival pen marks is a reason not to treat an ordinary marker as permanent archival documentation.
