On the common lever-style valve described by utilities, a quarter turn puts the handle crosswise to the pipe (OFF); parallel generally indicates ON. If you smell gas, hear hissing, see damage, or otherwise suspect an active leak, leave immediately and call 911 or your gas utility from a safe location. Do not approach the appliance just to operate a valve.
Do not confuse an appliance valve with the gas meter or service valve. An appliance valve stops gas to one appliance; a meter shutoff interrupts service to a much larger part of the property and must not be restored by you after an emergency closure. Your local utility’s instructions control, especially for meter operation and relighting.

First decide whether this is routine isolation or a gas emergency
When you smell gas, hear escaping gas, or see damage
Treat an odor of gas, a hissing sound, visible damage to gas piping or an appliance, or any other sign of escaping gas as a possible active leak. Leave the area immediately. Once you are well away from the building and the suspected leak, call 911 or your local gas utility. Tell the dispatcher where you are and what you observed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not operate switches, plugs, phones, flashlights, flames, vehicles or other equipment that could create an ignition source while you are in the suspected-gas area. Do not go back inside to locate a valve, investigate the appliance, or collect belongings. Hawaiʻi Gas states, “Turn off the gas at the shutoff valve only if it is safe to do so.” That qualification matters: evacuation and notification come before a shutoff attempt.

When the shutoff is planned
If you are preparing for service and there is no gas odor, hissing, visible damage or other emergency sign, you may isolate a clearly identified appliance with its dedicated valve. Keep people away from the work area, extinguish open flames, and follow the appliance manufacturer’s service instructions. If you cannot confidently identify the correct valve or the connection appears damaged, stop and contact the gas utility or a qualified gas professional instead of experimenting.
Know which valve you are touching
| Valve | What it controls | When it is appropriate | What happens afterward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appliance isolation valve | Gas flow to one identified appliance | Planned maintenance, removal, or an appliance-specific problem when the valve is safe to reach | The rest of the building’s gas service remains available |
| Meter or service valve | Gas service to a broader property or service point | Only for an emergency or when your utility specifically directs it | Utility inspection, approval, and a utility-specific restoration process may be required |
PG&E explains the distinction this way: “Most gas appliances have a gas shutoff valve that lets you turn off the gas for that appliance only.” That is the valve to use for a routine appliance isolation. The meter valve is not a substitute simply because it is easier to see.
How to shut off one appliance safely
1. Stop and assess the approach
Before moving toward the appliance, check for gas odor, hissing, visible damage, smoke, fire or an unsafe position. If any emergency sign is present, do not continue toward the appliance; follow the emergency procedure above. Make sure you have a clear exit and adequate lighting that does not require operating electrical equipment in a suspected-gas area.
2. Identify the appliance’s dedicated valve
Look for the shutoff serving that appliance, normally installed close to the appliance’s gas connection. The arrangement, handle style and access can vary. Trace only what you can see safely; do not pull a range, water heater, furnace, dryer or other heavy appliance away from a wall to search for a valve. Do not loosen a fitting or remove a cover to reach one.
Confirm that the valve belongs to the appliance you intend to isolate. If several appliances or branch pipes are nearby and you cannot tell which valve controls which appliance, do not guess. Ask the gas utility or a qualified professional to identify it.
3. Operate a common lever-style valve
For the common quarter-turn lever configuration described by PG&E and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), turn the handle one quarter turn until it is crosswise to the pipe. SDG&E describes the orientation as parallel to the pipe for ON and crosswise for OFF. This is a description of that common configuration, not a guarantee that every valve in every installation uses the same geometry.
Move the handle only as designed. Do not use pliers, a pipe wrench, a hammer or an improvised extension on an appliance valve. If the handle will not move with normal hand pressure, feels loose, is corroded, or begins to deform the valve or piping, stop and call for professional help.

4. Confirm the valve position without disturbing the connection
Visually check that the handle is in the intended OFF position for that valve. Do not disconnect the appliance, loosen a union, remove a burner, or use a flame to test for gas. If you need confirmation that the appliance is isolated, ask the utility or a qualified professional; a shutoff that appears closed but leaks or is misidentified needs competent testing.
5. Leave the appliance off until service is complete
Keep the valve closed while the appliance is being serviced or removed. Follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions for electrical isolation and any other energy sources. Closing the gas valve does not by itself make electrical, hot-water, steam, pressure, combustion or carbon-monoxide hazards safe. A qualified technician should perform repairs, disconnection, reconnection and leak checks.
Where to look—and when not to look—for an appliance valve
Stoves and ranges
A range commonly has an individual valve near its gas connection, but the exact location depends on the installation. Do not move the range if doing so could strain the flexible connector, kink piping, damage the wall connection or expose you to a suspected leak. If the valve is not plainly accessible, have a professional isolate it.
Water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces and dryers
These appliances also commonly have an individual nearby valve, yet access can be behind panels, in a closet or alongside other piping. Do not remove panels or reach into a confined space to search during a suspected leak. For planned work, use the manufacturer’s instructions and local utility guidance; an unfamiliar or inaccessible arrangement is a reason to call, not a reason to force access.
Multiple valves in one area
Several branch valves may be installed near one another. Pipe direction alone is not reliable proof of which appliance a valve serves. Identify the appliance-to-valve relationship from installation labeling or documentation; if that evidence is absent, ask the utility or a qualified gas professional.
Should you turn off gas at the meter?
A meter shutoff affects service more broadly than an appliance valve. Utilities generally reserve it for an emergency or a specific instruction. Enbridge Gas tells its customers, “Only Enbridge Gas or emergency personnel should turn off natural gas at the meter.” That is an example of a local rule, not a universal permission for homeowners elsewhere.
If you believe there is an active leak and your local emergency guidance tells you to close the meter valve only when safe, follow that guidance without putting yourself in the leak area. Otherwise, evacuate and call from a safe location. Never approach a meter that is in the suspected-gas area merely because you have read a generic procedure.

After a meter shutoff
Do not turn the meter gas back on yourself. PG&E and SDG&E state that utility inspection and restoration procedures may be required, and SoCalGas likewise instructs customers not to restore meter gas on their own. The utility may need to inspect the system, verify that appliances and piping are safe, and arrange relighting of pilots or other startup steps. Leave the meter valve off and contact the serving utility for its exact process.

- Schedule the work and read the appliance instructions. Confirm what the technician needs isolated and whether the appliance has electrical, water, fuel or venting hazards in addition to gas.
- Check for emergency signs before approaching. If there is an odor, hissing, visible damage or uncertainty about a leak, stop, leave and call 911 or the utility from outside the danger area.
- Locate the dedicated appliance valve without moving the appliance. Use only a clearly identifiable, safe-to-reach valve. Do not remove panels, loosen fittings or stretch a connector.
- Close the valve using its intended motion. On the common lever style, a quarter turn places the handle crosswise to the pipe. Do not force a stuck or damaged valve.
- Keep the valve closed and mark the work area. Prevent others from reopening it while service is underway. A label should identify the appliance and valve only when a professional can do so accurately.
- Have reconnection and testing performed by a qualified professional. Gas work, leak testing, code compliance and pilot relighting depend on the installation and local rules.
If the valve is stuck, damaged, missing or unclear
- Stuck handle: Do not add leverage or strike it. A professional can determine whether the valve or connected piping needs replacement.
- Corrosion, bent pipe or a loose fitting: Stop handling it and move away. Treat escaping gas as an emergency.
- No visible valve: Do not assume the meter valve is the appliance valve. Contact the utility or a qualified gas professional.
- Valve hidden behind a panel or appliance: Do not dismantle the installation or pull the appliance forward unless the manufacturer and a professional have confirmed it is safe.
- Uncertain valve identity: Do not test by opening and closing random valves. Obtain identification from the utility, installation records or a qualified professional.
Replacing or adding an appliance shutoff valve
An appliance isolation valve is a real installed component, but there is no universal consumer replacement that fits every gas system. Selection depends on valve type, pipe material and size, connection method, appliance requirements, local code and the installation’s physical access. A qualified professional should select, install and test a replacement.
An adjustable wrench is mentioned by some utilities for certain meter-shutoff procedures, not as a required tool for operating an appliance’s lever valve. Do not treat a wrench as permission to work on a meter or as a substitute for professional gas work. Local utility rules can restrict meter operation to utility or emergency personnel.
What different utilities say
| Utility and territory | Relevant guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| PG&E, California | Most gas appliances have a nearby shutoff; a quarter turn operates the common valve. Meter shutoff can require professional inspection and restoration. | Use the appliance valve for an identified appliance; contact PG&E for meter restoration. |
| SDG&E, San Diego County | ON is described as the valve tang parallel to the pipe and OFF as crosswise. Suspected leaks require immediate evacuation. | Use orientation only as a guide for the described lever configuration, and follow SDG&E emergency instructions. |
| SoCalGas, Southern California | Customers should not turn meter gas back on themselves. | Leave a closed meter off and arrange utility inspection and restoration. |
| Hawaiʻi Gas, Hawaiʻi | Gas should be shut off at the valve only if it is safe to do so. | Do not approach an appliance or meter in a dangerous leak situation. |
| Enbridge Gas, its service territory | Only Enbridge Gas or emergency personnel should turn off natural gas at the meter. | Check Enbridge’s local policy before any meter action; do not generalize another utility’s procedure. |
These utilities agree on the central boundary: isolate a specific appliance with its appliance valve when that valve is safe and clearly identified, and obtain help for suspected leaks. Meter operation, inspection and restoration are jurisdiction-specific. Your serving utility is the final authority.
Important limits of a gas shutoff
Closing one valve stops gas flow to that appliance; it does not prove that the appliance is repaired, that every fitting is leak-free, or that other appliances are safe. A pilot may go out, and a technician may need to relight it after inspecting the system. Do not relight a pilot after a meter closure until the utility or qualified professional says it is safe and explains the required sequence.

Do not use a shutoff as a substitute for ventilation, carbon-monoxide investigation, electrical lockout, water isolation or securing a hot surface. If a service person asks for a wider shutdown, let that person or the utility identify which valves must be closed. Keep children, visitors and other workers from turning the valve back on while work is in progress.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Walking toward a suspected leak to reach a convenient valve or meter.
- Assuming every lever has the same orientation without checking its configuration.
- Using a wrench, pliers or a pipe tool to force a stiff appliance valve.
- Pulling out a range or dryer and stressing its connector to find a hidden valve.
- Closing a meter valve for routine work when an appliance valve would isolate the job.
- Turning meter gas back on, relighting pilots or reconnecting an appliance without utility approval and professional testing.
- Opening and closing random branch valves because their appliance identity is uncertain.
Quick decision checklist
- Gas odor, hissing or visible damage? Leave immediately and call 911 or the utility from a safe location.
- No emergency signs and planned appliance work? Identify the dedicated valve near that appliance without moving or dismantling it.
- Common lever valve? A quarter turn commonly places the handle crosswise to the pipe, but verify the configuration.
- Valve unclear, inaccessible, stuck or damaged? Stop and call the utility or a qualified professional.
- Considering the meter valve? Use it only for an emergency or when local utility guidance directs you.
- Meter already shut off? Do not restore it yourself; contact the utility for inspection and service restoration.
The safest shutoff is the smallest one that solves the problem: close a clearly identified appliance valve when conditions are safe, and leave emergency or meter-level decisions to your utility and qualified professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I shut off gas to just one appliance?
With no odor, hissing or visible damage, locate the clearly identified valve beside that appliance’s gas connection. On the common lever style, turn it one quarter turn so the handle is crosswise to the pipe. If you cannot identify or safely reach the valve, stop and call the utility or a qualified professional.
Where is the gas shutoff valve for my stove?
It is commonly near the range’s gas connection, but installations differ. Do not pull the range, strain a flexible connector or remove a panel to search. If the valve is not plainly accessible, have a professional isolate the range.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if I smell gas while trying to close the valve?
Stop moving toward the appliance, leave immediately and call 911 or the gas utility from a safe location. Do not operate switches, phones, vehicles or other potential ignition sources in the suspected-gas area, and do not return to operate the valve unless emergency personnel or your utility directs you and it is safe.
Is a meter valve the same as an appliance shutoff?
No. An appliance valve isolates one appliance, while a meter or service valve interrupts gas to a broader property or service point. Use the appliance valve for routine, appliance-specific work; meter operation is limited by local utility rules and emergency conditions.
Can I turn the gas meter back on after an emergency?
No. Leave it off and contact the serving utility. PG&E, SDG&E and SoCalGas say inspection and restoration may be required, including checking piping and appliances and arranging pilot relighting. Enbridge Gas specifically limits meter shutoff to Enbridge or emergency personnel in its territory.
What if the appliance valve is stuck or corroded?
Do not force it with pliers, a wrench, a hammer or an extension. Stop handling the valve and call a qualified gas professional. If you see damage or suspect escaping gas, evacuate and call 911 or the utility from outside.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I install a replacement gas shutoff valve myself?
There is no universal replacement that fits every installation. Valve type, pipe material and size, connection method, appliance requirements, access and local code all matter. Have a qualified professional select, install and test the valve.
Does closing the valve make the appliance safe to repair?
It stops gas to that appliance but does not remove electrical, hot-water, steam, pressure, combustion or carbon-monoxide hazards. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, keep the valve closed and have reconnection, leak testing and pilot relighting performed by a qualified professional.
The Bottom Line
For planned work, close only the clearly identified appliance valve, usually with a quarter turn until a lever is crosswise to the pipe. If the valve is unclear, inaccessible or damaged, do not force it. If you smell gas, hear hissing or see damage, leave immediately and call 911 or the utility from a safe location. Never restore meter gas yourself; your local utility controls inspection and service restoration.
