Sharpen wood chipper blades only by the method and to the angle specified in the manual for your exact make and model. There is no universal chipper-blade angle: manuals reviewed specify different angles and equipment, and one recommends taking the blade to a machine shop rather than sharpening it yourself. If you cannot follow your manual’s procedure, have a qualified sharpening professional do the work.
How to tell when chipper blades may be dull
Blunt knives can be one reason a chipper stops pulling material through as it should. Possible signs include material needing to be pushed into the machine, long strips instead of chips, reduced self-feeding, or increased vibration. These are inspection clues, not proof that dull blades are the cause; follow the troubleshooting guidance for your machine before deciding to sharpen.
Inspect the knives using the criteria in the owner’s manual. Cracks, damage that cannot be ground out, or a blade worn below its specified minimum are reasons to replace it, not keep sharpening it.
Can you sharpen chipper blades yourself?
That depends on the model. The DK2 OPC514 manual recommends a machine shop and says not to attempt sharpening the blade. The Hansa C7 manual specifies surface grinding, while the Sanking 2021WC-8H manual describes using a fixture and controlled grinding. Do not assume that equipment or a procedure intended for one chipper is suitable for another.

| DK2 OPC514, manual version 210412 | Manual recommends a machine shop; maintain a consistent 45-degree angle. It warns that excess heat can damage and weaken the blade. | Set the blade-to-wear-plate gap to 1/16 inch. Turn the flywheel by hand to check for interference before starting. DK2 OPC514 manual |
| Hansa C7, manual OM-019 revision B, dated 2018-09-03 | Use a surface grinder, a 40-degree cutting angle, and plenty of coolant. | Blade width must remain at least 35 mm after sharpening. Use the manual’s model-specific knife-to-anvil clearance and bolt torque. Hansa C7 manual |
| Sanking 2021WC-8H | Use a fixture to hold the blade, maintain a 30–32-degree bevel, grind for short periods, and cool the blade. Remove equal material from each blade to maintain rotor balance. | Replace cracked blades, damage that cannot be sharpened out, or repeatedly sharpened blades whose cutting surface no longer extends past the slot opening. Sanking owner’s manual |
| Patriot Products guidance | Patriot says to sharpen its knives evenly at 30 degrees and warns that too much heat can make them brittle. It prefers slow-speed, water-cooled grinding or a specialist. | Applies to Patriot products; consult the manual for the specific machine. Patriot knife maintenance |
Safe preparation before touching the knives
- Find the owner’s manual for the chipper’s exact make and model. Confirm its removal and sharpening instructions, blade limits, fastener requirements, and clearance settings.
- Stop the engine and follow the manual’s isolation and access procedure. Wait until all moving parts have stopped; disconnect the spark plug wire if the manual requires it.
- Handle knives as sharp even when the engine is off. Do not reach into the machine or begin removal until it is isolated as specified by the manufacturer.
Sharpening without damaging the blade
- Use only the manual’s specified method, bevel angle, and equipment. Keep the cutting angle consistent.
- Control heat using the specified method. Depending on the model, that may mean coolant or short grinding periods followed by cooling. Excess heat can damage or weaken the blade.
- Do not grind mounting surfaces where the manual prohibits it.
- Where the manual requires it, remove equal material from matched blades so the rotor remains balanced.
Reinstalling and checking the chipper
Replace blades that meet the manual’s damage or minimum-size criteria. Reinstall and fasten them using the model’s specified requirements, then set the prescribed blade-to-anvil or blade-to-wear-plate clearance. Clearances and fastener specifications are model-specific, so do not substitute a value from another chipper.
Before starting, turn the rotor or flywheel by hand if the manual directs it, checking that it moves freely and the blades do not interfere with surrounding parts. Follow the manual’s remaining checks before returning the chipper to service.
Quick Recap

- For Accurate Honing: This chisel sharpening kit consists of a sharpening guide, a sharpening stone, a sharpening angle gauge and a sharpening angle fixture for creating straight and consistent bevel. Two adjustable jaws of the sharpener help securely clamp the blade at the correct bevel angle to whetstone surface. Make each honing accurate, consistent, and effective
- Angle Gauge & Angle Fixture: Instead of estimating the bevel angle by eye, this honing guide kit features an angle gauge to find blade’s bevel angle quickly. What’s more, our innovative angle fixture adopts a positioning block to help set the blade length precisely on it. Greatly simplify your sharpening setup process and improve the honing accuracy
- Four Grit Sharpener:Features 400#/1000# grits for sharpening and repair—400# for chips and reshaping, 1000# for honing and maintenance, durable diamond surfaces wear longer and never need flattening, outperforming traditional stones.Achieve razor-sharp edges and a polished finish with 3000# and 8000# grits options. Includes a non-slip base for stability.
- High Compatibility: Chisels and plane blades ranging from 0.1 in to 2.8 in width fit the honing guide securely, easily meeting your various honing needs. Moreover, our extended roller always ensures rapid, smooth and stable honing at the correct bevel angle regardless of blade width
- Easy To Operate: First, find out the chisel’s bevel angle with the angle gauge. Then lock the positioning block at the same angle on fixture. Place the chisel sharpening jig on fixture and adjust the knob at either side to make opening larger. Then insert the blade and make the blade tip contact the groove on the positioning block. Tighten the screw to fix the blade. Finally, Start rolling the chisel honing jig back and forth on the whetstone
