To sharpen a chisel, prepare its flat back if needed, hone the bevel at a consistent angle until a small burr forms, then hone the back to remove the burr. A honing guide can make the angle easier to repeat; stropping is an optional final polish. The right bevel angle depends on the chisel and the work, so follow the maker’s guidance rather than assuming one angle suits every tool.
What you need
Choose one sharpening system; diamond stones, waterstones and oilstones are alternatives, not a required shopping list. A honing guide is optional, and a leather strop with compound can help polish the finished edge.

- Diamond stone or plate: A direct option for honing. Common Woodworking describes coarse, fine and super-fine diamond plates, but the right progression depends on your edge and setup.
- Waterstone or oilstone: Other established abrasive choices. Norton notes that angle selection depends on the tool and job; its guidance does not establish one medium as best for everyone.
- Abrasive paper: Common Woodworking describes it as a temporary substitute for diamond stones.
- Honing guide: Helps hold a repeatable angle. Freehand sharpening is also an option.
- Strop and compound: Optional finishing tools for polishing the edge and clearing remaining burr material; they do not replace honing on an abrasive.
Use the abrasive system you can set up and maintain consistently. There is no single grit sequence established for every chisel condition and sharpening medium.
Check the chisel before honing
Inspect the flat back and cutting edge. If the back is not flat near the edge, flatten and polish it before honing the bevel; otherwise, the two surfaces may not meet cleanly at the cutting edge. The amount of preparation depends on the tool’s condition.

A badly damaged, out-of-square or substantially rounded edge is not a routine touch-up. It may need more extensive correction before honing can produce a usable edge.
Choose an appropriate bevel angle
Use the chisel maker’s recommendation when available. Norton says there is no standard angle for chisels and plane blades: the appropriate geometry depends on the tool and the job. Trend uses 30 degrees as a normal honing angle in its bench-chisel example, but that is not a universal specification.

For its own chisels, IRWIN says they are factory-ground at 25 degrees and honed at 30 degrees, and recommends 30 degrees for resharpening. Treat that as IRWIN’s guidance for IRWIN chisels, not a rule for other brands or every cutting task. Lee Valley advises a 2-degree micro-bevel for its bench and butt chisels; that setup advice is likewise not a requirement for every chisel.

- Set the angle. If using a honing guide, secure the chisel and adjust it to the maker’s recommended honing angle. If sharpening freehand, keep the bevel in consistent contact with the abrasive and avoid rocking the blade.
- Hone the bevel. Move the bevel over the abrasive using the motion appropriate to your stone or plate. Continue until a small wire edge, or burr, can be felt along the back at the cutting edge. The amount of work needed depends on the edge’s condition and the abrasive.
- Hone the back. Lay the flat back against the abrasive near the edge and hone it to remove the burr. Keep the back flat rather than lifting it into a new angle.
- Refine if needed. Move to a finer abrasive if your chosen system and the edge’s condition call for it, then repeat the bevel and back work. Do not assume one grit progression fits every system.
- Strop if desired. Draw the edge across a leather strop with compound to polish it. Use light, controlled strokes; stropping is a finishing step, not a substitute for establishing the bevel on an abrasive.
Check the edge and work safely
Lee Valley suggests testing a fresh edge by slicing a shaving from soft-wood end grain. A clean cut is a practical check; if the chisel tears or struggles, inspect the edge and return to honing as needed.

- For Accurate Honing: This chisel sharpening kit consists of a sharpening guide, a sharpening stone, a sharpening angle gauge and a sharpening angle fixture for creating straight and consistent bevel. Two adjustable jaws of the sharpener help securely clamp the blade at the correct bevel angle to whetstone surface. Make each honing accurate, consistent, and effective
- Angle Gauge & Angle Fixture: Instead of estimating the bevel angle by eye, this honing guide kit features an angle gauge to find blade’s bevel angle quickly. What’s more, our innovative angle fixture adopts a positioning block to help set the blade length precisely on it. Greatly simplify your sharpening setup process and improve the honing accuracy
- Four Grit Sharpener:Features 400#/1000# grits for sharpening and repair—400# for chips and reshaping, 1000# for honing and maintenance, durable diamond surfaces wear longer and never need flattening, outperforming traditional stones.Achieve razor-sharp edges and a polished finish with 3000# and 8000# grits options. Includes a non-slip base for stability.
- High Compatibility: Chisels and plane blades ranging from 0.1 in to 2.8 in width fit the honing guide securely, easily meeting your various honing needs. Moreover, our extended roller always ensures rapid, smooth and stable honing at the correct bevel angle regardless of blade width
- Easy To Operate: First, find out the chisel’s bevel angle with the angle gauge. Then lock the positioning block at the same angle on fixture. Place the chisel sharpening jig on fixture and adjust the knob at either side to make opening larger. Then insert the blade and make the blade tip contact the groove on the positioning block. Tighten the screw to fix the blade. Finally, Start rolling the chisel honing jig back and forth on the whetstone
- Keep the blade pointed away from yourself while sharpening, and keep fingers clear of the cutting edge.
- Secure the chisel with a honing guide or stable grip so it cannot slip unexpectedly.
- If using powered grinding, use suitable safety equipment for the machine and setup. Government hand-tool guidance advises adequate protection but does not define one equipment list for every grinder or working arrangement.
For carving chisels and skew chisels
Carving tools do not all share the straight-edged geometry of a bench chisel. Woodcraft’s carving-chisel guide notes that a skew chisel is held at an angle to the stone so its cutting edge lies perpendicular to the stone’s length. Gouges and other curved profiles require attention to their specific geometry; a straight-chisel procedure should not be assumed to cover every profile.
