To sharpen a chainsaw chain by hand, secure the saw and bar, identify the chain’s exact pitch and file size, fit a compatible filing guide, and file each cutter with a controlled forward stroke. Work all cutters to the same length, then check the depth gauges with the matching gauge and a flat file. Stop and replace the chain if you find cracked links, damaged rivets, badly worn parts, or a cutter wear mark that has been reached.

What hand sharpening does—and what it cannot fix

A round file restores the cutting edge on each top plate and side plate. A guide keeps the file at the intended height and angle so the cutters remain consistent from one side of the chain to the other. The depth gauges, also called rakers, control how aggressively each cutter enters the wood; they must be checked separately with a filing gauge.

Filing is maintenance, not structural repair. Before you begin, inspect every link, rivet and cutter. The STIHL MS 260 manual directs users to clean the chain and check for cracks in links and damaged rivets, replacing damaged or worn parts with components that match the original shape and size (STIHL MS 260 manual). STIHL also says to replace a chain when its wear marking has been reached (STIHL sharpening guidance). A file cannot make a cracked link safe.

Safety and work-area setup

Work with the engine off, the saw cooled and the chain free of dirt, oil and packed chips. Wear task-rated gloves and eye protection. STIHL recommends placing the bar in a bench or stump vise without clamping the chain; snug the chain against the bar rail and set the chain brake (STIHL chain-file guide). Oregon likewise describes engaging the chain brake and lightly clamping the bar in a bench vise. When you need to rotate the chain, release the brake only as the saw’s operating instructions allow, move the chain with gloved hands, and re-engage the brake before filing (Oregon sharpening instructions).

  • Clamp the bar firmly enough that it cannot shift, but never pinch the chain or bind the drive links.
  • Keep the file handle under control and file away from your body.
  • Use a stable bench or stump with enough room to turn the saw or reposition the bar.
  • Clean sawdust and oil from the chain so cracks, bent components and the wear mark are visible.

Identify the chain before choosing a file

Do not choose a round file from the saw’s engine size or bar length. File diameter and filing geometry depend on the exact chain. The chain pitch is marked on the chain or specified in the saw and chain manual. Use that information to select the round-file diameter, guide and depth-gauge setting. The MS 260 manual gives examples for that model, not a universal size chart for every current chain (MS 260 manual).

Filing angles are also chain-specific. STIHL says its chains are generally filed at 30 degrees (STIHL how-to). Husqvarna’s academy material describes a 25–35-degree range depending on chain type (Husqvarna filing guidance). Treat those figures as manufacturer examples, not permission to use one angle on every chain. The chain manual and the markings on your guide take precedence.

What to read on the chain or manual

  • Chain pitch, which determines the compatible round-file diameter and guide.
  • Chain type or cutter profile, because different profiles can require different guide geometry.
  • Recommended filing angle and any top-plate or side-plate angle marks.
  • Depth-gauge setting or the correct filing gauge for that chain.
  • Wear-limit marking and replacement instructions.

Choose a compatible guide and file

A basic kit contains a handle, a pitch-appropriate round file and a guide. Combination guides can also include a flat file or a depth-gauge feature. STIHL’s 2-in-1 guide includes two round files, a flat file, a file holder and a built-in guide for cutters and depth gauges (STIHL chain-file guide). Husqvarna describes kits with a file handle, combination file guide, two round files and a flat file (Husqvarna file kits). Oregon’s instructions place the guide over the cutter with the round file seated in the gullet between the cutter and depth gauge (Oregon instructions).

Tool or feature Why it matters What to verify before use
Round file Restores the cutter’s curved cutting surface. Diameter matches the chain pitch and the chain maker’s specification.
Filing guide Controls file height, angle and alignment. Guide is made for your chain type and its angle marks match the manual.
File handle Provides a secure grip and controlled forward pressure. Handle fits the file tightly and is free of cracks.
Flat file Lowers depth gauges after the cutters have been filed. File is suitable for the gauge and used with a matching depth-gauge tool.
Depth-gauge filing gauge Sets the correct height difference between each cutter and its raker. Gauge is labeled for the same chain type and specification.
Vise Prevents the bar from moving while you file. Clamps the bar, not the chain, and leaves the chain free to advance.

Compare kits by compatibility, not by the number of accessories. A guide that does not match the chain pitch or profile can hold the file at the wrong height even when the file itself fits. Durability, price and independent performance vary by product; the manufacturer information cited here establishes tool functions, not a universal ranking.

Step-by-step: file the cutters

1. Find a master cutter

After cleaning and inspecting the chain, locate the most worn or shortest cutter. Mark it with a felt pen if that helps you keep track. STIHL advises sharpening that cutter first and matching the remaining cutters to its length (STIHL file guide). If a cutter is cracked, twisted or too close to the wear limit, do not use it as a pattern; replace the chain or have it assessed.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

2. Secure the bar and set the chain

Place the bar in a bench or stump vise, keeping the chain outside the jaws. Pull the chain snugly against the bar rail, engage the chain brake and confirm that the saw cannot move. Position the first cutter so it is easy to reach. Release the brake only when the saw’s instructions require chain movement, and then re-engage it before each filing operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Set the guide

Fit the guide over the cutter with the round file in the cutter’s gullet, the hollow area between the cutting edge and the depth gauge. Husqvarna instructs users to point the guide arrows toward the bar nose and place the file at a right angle to the guide rollers (Husqvarna chain-sharpening procedure). For STIHL’s 2-in-1 guide, keep the guide edges parallel to the bar as directed by the guide’s instructions. Confirm the angle marks before applying pressure.

4. File only on the forward stroke

Push the file through the cutter from the inside outward, toward the cutter’s point. Lift the file clear on the return stroke rather than dragging it backward across the edge. STIHL’s materials specify that only the forward stroke sharpens (STIHL how-to). Use smooth, consistent pressure and keep the file position, angle and height unchanged for every stroke.

5. Establish the master cutter’s length

Continue until the damaged edge is removed and a clean, continuous cutting edge appears along the top and side plates. The number of strokes depends on how worn the cutter is. STIHL notes that three strokes may suffice in a routine touch-up, while severely worn teeth can require more (STIHL file guide). That is an example, not a fixed count. Stop when the cutter matches the intended profile and the master length is established.

6. Sharpen every second cutter

File the cutters that face in the same direction first, advancing the chain one cutter at a time. Keep the guide seated in the same way and match every cutter to the master’s length and sharpness. Do not skip a cutter because it looks acceptable; uneven lengths make the chain pull to one side and cut crookedly.

7. Reposition and file the opposite cutters

When the first direction is complete, reposition the saw or move to the other side of the bar so you can file the remaining cutters from the opposite direction. Husqvarna and STIHL both emphasize keeping the cutters even across both directions (Husqvarna procedure; STIHL guide). Maintain the same guide setting and file height. A different angle on the second side produces an unbalanced chain even if every tooth appears sharp.

8. Advance the chain correctly

Follow the guide’s instructions each time you move to the next cutter. STIHL says to lift and reset the file guide before another pass. Keep your gloved hand clear of the cutting edges, and verify that the chain brake is re-engaged before each filing stroke. Never spin the chain rapidly or pull it with bare hands.

Check and file the depth gauges

The depth gauge sits in front of each cutter and determines how deeply that cutter can bite. As the cutter is shortened through repeated sharpening, the height relationship between cutter and gauge changes. A gauge that is too high limits cutting; one filed too low can make the chain grab more aggressively and increase kickback risk. STIHL warns specifically about filing a gauge too low (STIHL MS 260 manual).

  1. Place the chain-specific depth-gauge tool over the cutter and its raker.
  2. Inspect each gauge through the tool’s opening. If the gauge protrudes above the filing gauge, it needs reworking, as described by STIHL (STIHL how-to).
  3. Use a flat file in the direction specified by the gauge, removing only the amount that stands above the tool.
  4. Round or finish the gauge only as the chain instructions require; do not change its profile by guesswork.
  5. Check every gauge around the chain so one low or high raker does not create an isolated aggressive cutter.

There is no universal interval for depth-gauge filing. Husqvarna’s US guidance suggests checking and filing them about every third or fifth cutter filing under normal wear, while STIHL presents checking them as part of the sharpening process (Husqvarna filing guidance; STIHL how-to). Use the interval and setting specified for your chain and gauge rather than applying either schedule to every model.

How to tell whether the filing worked

With the saw off, inspect the cutters in a bright light. The cutting edges should be clean and consistent, with no shiny unfiled section left on one side. Cutter lengths should be visibly even, and the left- and right-facing groups should have matching angles. Depth gauges should sit uniformly below the cutter edges when checked with the proper gauge.

  • Chain cuts to one side: one set of cutters is longer or filed at a different angle. Recheck the master length and bring the opposite set into conformity.
  • Chain produces fine dust instead of chips: cutters are still dull, the file is too small or the file height is wrong. Recheck the chain specification and guide position.
  • Cut is slow after sharpening: inspect for a missed cutter, a high depth gauge or a chain that has reached its wear limit.
  • Chain grabs unusually hard: a depth gauge may have been filed too low. Stop using the chain and compare the setting with the chain manual or have a qualified servicing dealer inspect it.
  • Edges look rounded or polished: the file may have been dragged backward. Lift it on the return stroke and use a sharp, correctly sized file.
  • Guide rocks or will not seat: the guide may not match the chain pitch or profile. Do not compensate by changing pressure; obtain the compatible guide.

When to stop filing and replace the chain

Stop immediately if you find a cracked link, damaged rivet, bent or missing component, or wear that has reached the chain’s marked limit. The STIHL manual calls for replacement of damaged or worn parts with parts matching the original shape and size, and STIHL’s sharpening instructions say to replace a chain when its wear marking is reached (STIHL MS 260 manual; STIHL sharpening guidance).

Replace the complete chain when individual components cannot be matched safely or when repeated filing has left the cutters too short to meet the specified geometry. Select a replacement by the saw model, bar length, drive-link count, pitch and gauge; never assume that a chain with the same apparent length fits. If severe damage has made the cutters uneven and you cannot restore them confidently, use a qualified servicing dealer instead of continuing to remove metal.

Buying checklist for a file-and-guide kit

Before ordering a “chainsaw file guide kit,” read the chain marking and manual and record the pitch, chain type and depth-gauge specification. Then verify the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The round-file diameter is explicitly listed for that chain.
  • The guide supports the required filing angle and file height.
  • The guide arrows, rollers or parallel edges can be aligned as the instructions describe.
  • A flat file and compatible depth-gauge tool are included if you want one kit for both cutter and raker work.
  • The handle grips the file securely and the guide can be held steadily on your bar.
  • Replacement files are available in the same size when the original file wears.

Official tool descriptions establish what the kits are designed to do, but they do not establish a universal durability, price or performance winner. Compatibility with your particular chain is the deciding factor. If inspection shows end-of-life wear or structural damage, budget for a correctly specified replacement chain rather than treating a guide kit as a repair.

A repeatable routine for future sharpenings

  1. Clean and inspect the chain before every filing session.
  2. Confirm the chain pitch, type, filing angle, file diameter and depth-gauge setting from the chain or saw manual.
  3. Secure the bar in a vise without clamping the chain; engage the brake before filing.
  4. Mark the shortest sound cutter and use it as the master.
  5. Set the compatible guide, file one direction on forward strokes only, then complete the opposite direction.
  6. Check depth gauges with the matching tool and lower only those that protrude.
  7. Inspect for even cutter lengths, consistent edges and structural damage before reinstalling or operating the saw.

This sequence keeps the parts that most affect safety and cutting performance—chain condition, file compatibility, cutter uniformity and depth-gauge height—in the correct order. It also gives you a clear stop point: any crack, damaged rivet, worn component or reached wear mark means replacement or qualified service, not more filing.
