How to Set Up Your Philips Hue Lights With Matter

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Philips Hue owners, the best Matter setup keeps the Hue Bridge. The Bridge lets compatible platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings control your Hue lights while preserving older bulbs, Hue scenes, accessories, and automations. A new Hue bulb marked with the Matter logo can instead be paired directly, without a Bridge, but that simpler route provides fewer Hue-specific features.

Choose the right setup

  • Already own a Hue Bridge: use the Bridge-based Matter integration. This is the recommended option for existing Hue systems.
  • Have a new bulb with the Matter logo and no Bridge: pair the bulb directly with your Matter-compatible smart-home app.
  • Use older bulbs, Hue switches, sensors, scenes, automations, or entertainment features: keep or buy a Hue Bridge.
  • Want to share one light with multiple smart-home platforms: use Matter multi-admin sharing after the first pairing, where supported.

Matter is an interoperability layer, not a replacement for the Hue app, Hue Bridge, or the radio system used by Hue lights. A Matter connection does not guarantee that every Hue feature will appear in every third-party app. See Philips Hue’s Matter compatibility information.

What you need

For a Hue Bridge setup

  • A Philips Hue Bridge or Hue Bridge Pro.
  • Hue lights already added to the Philips Hue app.
  • The Bridge connected to power and your router by Ethernet.
  • An updated Hue app and Bridge firmware.
  • A Matter-compatible destination app or ecosystem.

Philips lists the standard Bridge as supporting up to 50 lights and 12 accessories. Bridge Pro is intended for larger installations, with Philips listing support for more than 150 lights and 50 accessories. Capacity and availability vary by region; check the standard Bridge and Bridge Pro product pages.

For direct Matter pairing

  • A Hue bulb whose packaging or documentation shows the Matter logo.
  • The bulb’s Matter QR code or manual pairing code.
  • A compatible Matter controller.
  • A compatible Thread Border Router, such as certain HomePod mini, fourth-generation Echo, Google Nest Hub, or Nanoleaf devices.
  • A phone with Bluetooth enabled if requested by the setup app.
  • A stable home network and a bulb that is powered on and ready to pair.

A Matter controller and a Thread Border Router are different roles, although one device can sometimes provide both. Check compatibility for your exact Apple, Google, Amazon, SmartThings, or other platform before buying hardware.

Recommended method: connect Hue through a Bridge

1. Set up Hue first

  1. Connect the Hue Bridge to power.
  2. Connect it to your home router with Ethernet.
  3. Install or update the Philips Hue app and sign in.
  4. Follow the app’s prompts to add the Bridge.
  5. Add your lights and accessories.
  6. Confirm that the lights work from the Hue app before starting Matter setup.

The Bridge is the central hub for the Hue system, including Hue app control, automations, accessories, and integrations. Philips says Bridge updates are normally delivered automatically, so leave it powered and connected. Do not unplug it during an update.

2. Start Matter integration

  1. Open the Philips Hue app.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Smart home, or the equivalent Matter or smart-home integration entry.
  4. Choose Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or another available platform.
  5. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
  6. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the manual pairing code if requested.
  7. In the destination app, assign the imported lights to rooms, rename them, and test them.

Menu names can differ by app version, country, phone operating system, and Bridge generation. If you do not see the exact wording above, look under Hue’s smart-home integration settings. Philips’ detailed setup guide is available here.

Platform-specific completion

Apple Home

For a Bridge-based setup, begin in Hue app → Settings → Smart home, choose Apple Home or Matter, and complete the pairing flow. In Apple Home, select a room for the Bridge and imported lights, then test control in both apps.

Google Home

For a Bridge, start in Hue app → Settings → Smart home, select Google Home or Matter, and finish room assignment in Google Home. For a direct bulb, open Google Home, choose Add device or the Matter setup option, scan the code or enter it manually, and assign the bulb.

Google notes that Matter requires a compatible controller and functioning network, and that IPv6 may be required. Not every Google speaker or display has identical Matter and Thread capabilities. Check Google’s current Matter setup requirements.

Amazon Alexa

For a Bridge, start in the Hue app’s smart-home settings, choose Alexa or Matter, then allow Alexa to discover the devices. For a direct bulb, open Alexa, select Add Device → Matter, scan the QR code or enter the manual code, and assign the bulb to a room.

Direct Matter compatibility depends on the specific Alexa controller and firmware. Philips’ supported-device guidance includes selected fourth-generation Echo hardware and certain Echo Show, Echo Hub, Echo Studio, and eero products.

Samsung SmartThings and other platforms

Setup labels vary. If the platform supports Matter commissioning, use the Bridge’s Matter pairing or sharing flow. If it offers a dedicated Hue integration, compare the two options: a dedicated integration may expose more Hue-specific functionality than generic Matter. Philips lists SmartThings compatibility for the Hue Bridge and Bridge Pro.

Pair a Matter-enabled bulb without a Hue Bridge

  1. Confirm that the bulb has the Matter logo.
  2. Confirm that your chosen platform supports that bulb type.
  3. Confirm that you have both a Matter controller and the required Thread Border Router.
  4. Install the bulb and turn it on.
  5. If it was previously used, reset it according to its instructions.
  6. Open Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or another compatible Matter app.
  7. Select Add device or Add accessory.
  8. Scan the QR code from the packaging, guide, or label. If scanning fails, enter the manual pairing code.
  9. Assign the bulb to a room, name it, and test on/off, brightness, and supported color controls.

If the bulb is already connected to a Hue Bridge, Philips says it generally must be removed from that Hue system and reset before direct Matter pairing. Do this only if you deliberately want a Bridge-free setup: removal can delete the bulb from Hue rooms, scenes, routines, and accessory controls.

What Matter does—and does not—preserve

Capability Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro Direct Matter bulb
Older Hue lights Yes No
Hue app management Yes Not as a Bridge device
Hue accessories and sensors Yes No Bridge-based control
Hue scenes and advanced features Broadest support More limited
Matter ecosystem control Yes Yes, if compatible
Thread Border Router Not normally required Required for the direct Thread route described by Philips
Away-from-home Hue control Available through the Hue system Depends on the chosen Matter ecosystem

Basic Matter controls commonly include power, dimming, and supported color or color-temperature controls. Dynamic Hue scenes, gradient behavior, Entertainment syncing, Hue accessories, and some adaptive-lighting functions may depend on the Hue app, Bridge, dedicated integration, or ecosystem-specific support. Matter improves interoperability; it does not make all platforms expose the same Hue feature set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Philips specifically excludes Bluetooth-connected products from Matter exposure through the Bridge. Its Matter information also identifies the Hue Play HDMI sync box and the dial on the Hue Tap dial switch as exclusions. Treat claims that “all Hue products work with Matter” as referring to supported products connected through a supported Bridge, with these qualifications.

Adding the same light to another platform

Matter can support simultaneous control from multiple certified smart-home apps through multi-admin sharing. After the first platform is working, use that platform’s option to share or add the device to another Matter ecosystem, then follow its QR-code or manual-code process. Room names, automations, scenes, and feature support may not transfer identically, so check each platform after sharing.

Troubleshooting

The Matter option is missing in Hue

  1. Update the Hue app.
  2. Confirm that the Bridge has power and Ethernet.
  3. Restart the Bridge and router.
  4. Leave the Bridge online so pending firmware updates can arrive.
  5. Reopen Settings → Smart home.
  6. Check that the product is not Bluetooth-only or otherwise excluded.

If the option remains unavailable, contact Philips Hue support rather than deleting the entire Hue setup.

The QR code will not scan

  • Increase screen brightness and clean the phone camera lens.
  • Use the printed code instead of a screen when possible.
  • Confirm that the code belongs to the device being paired.
  • Enter the manual pairing code.
  • Reset the bulb if it was previously commissioned.
  • Keep the phone, bulb, controller, and router close enough for setup.

Pairing starts but does not finish

  • Keep the phone on the same home network as the controller.
  • Disable VPNs temporarily and avoid guest Wi-Fi or client isolation.
  • Check IPv6 if required by the platform.
  • Confirm that the Thread Border Router and controller are online.
  • Update the Matter app, controller, and bulb where updates are available.
  • Check that the bulb is not already commissioned into another Matter fabric.

The lights show “No Response”

  1. Test the lights in the Hue app.
  2. If Hue cannot control them, fix the Bridge or Hue connection first.
  3. Force-close and reopen the third-party app.
  4. Restart the Matter controller and Bridge.
  5. Check for firmware updates.
  6. Remove and re-add only the Matter integration, not the entire Hue lighting system.

Removing the Matter integration may require you to recreate room assignments, names, automations, and scenes in the third-party platform.

Basic control works but Hue features are missing

This is usually a feature-scope limitation, not a failed pairing. Use the Hue app or a dedicated Hue integration for advanced scenes, accessories, Entertainment syncing, and other functions that generic Matter control does not expose.

Which hardware should you buy?

  • Standard Hue Bridge: the practical choice for existing Hue owners, older bulbs, multi-room systems, accessories, and the broadest standard Hue experience. Philips’ US price signal was $69.99 on August 18, 2026.
  • Hue Bridge Pro: better suited to large installations or buyers interested in features Philips markets such as MotionAware, Hue Sync, security integration, and expanded capacity. Its US price signal was $139.99 on that date.
  • Direct Matter bulb: the simplest and potentially lowest-cost option if you already own a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router and do not need Bridge-dependent Hue features.
  • Starter kit: useful when buying several bulbs and a Bridge together. Philips promotions and prices change, so check its Bridge buying guide and starter-kit promotions.
