Set up a Google Nest Hub with the Google Home app on a compatible Android phone, iPhone, or tablet. You will need a Google Account, your home Wi-Fi name and password, and the Hub’s power adapter. The normal process is to plug in the display, add it through Google Home → Home → Add → Device → Search for device, connect it to Wi-Fi, and assign it to a room.
Requirements and app guidance checked August 18, 2026. Google can change operating-system requirements and menu labels as the app is updated.

What you need before setting up
- A Google Nest Hub, Nest Hub (2nd gen), or Nest Hub Max with its original or compatible power adapter.
- A Google Account you intend to use for the household.
- Your home Wi-Fi name and password.
- An Android phone or tablet running Android 9 or later, or an iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later, according to Google’s current requirements.
- The latest version of the Google Home app.
- A location near your router for the initial connection.
Google Nest Hub setup is performed from a mobile device, not a Windows or Mac computer. Keep your phone connected to the Wi-Fi network you want the Hub to use, and allow time for firmware updates after the display connects.

- Google Nest Hub: The original compact smart display.
- Google Nest Hub (2nd gen): A similar display with model-specific features, including Sleep Sensing where supported.
- Google Nest Hub Max: A larger display with a camera and additional camera privacy controls.
Check the packaging, product label, purchase listing, or the device discovered in Google Home if you are unsure which model you have. Features vary by country, language, account, and model.
Set up your Google Nest Hub
1. Plug in the Hub
- Place the Hub near your Wi-Fi router.
- Connect the power adapter to the Hub and a wall outlet.
- Wait for the display to start and show its setup state.
- Keep your phone close to the Hub.
The Hub is mains-powered rather than a portable, battery-operated device. Do not unplug it during setup or while it is installing an update. The exact welcome animation and wording can differ by model and firmware, so follow the instructions shown on the display.
2. Install or update Google Home
- Open Google Play Store on Android or the Apple App Store on iPhone or iPad.
- Search for Google Home.
- Install the app, or update it if it is already installed.
- Open Google Home and sign in with the Google Account that should manage the device.
- Allow permissions requested for device discovery and setup.
Using the wrong Google Account can place the Hub in the wrong household or make it difficult to find later.

3. Select or create a Google Home
Google Home may ask you to choose an existing home, create a new one, or confirm household information. Select the home where the Hub will be used. If necessary, create a room such as Kitchen, Bedroom, or Living Room.
The room is mainly for organization and voice control. A clear room assignment is especially useful when you have several Google speakers or displays.
4. Add the Hub in Google Home
- Open Google Home.
- Select the correct home if more than one appears.
- Tap Home.
- Tap Add.
- Tap Device.
- Choose Search for device, or select the setup card if Google Home has detected the Hub automatically.
- Choose your Nest Hub from the results.
- If prompted, confirm that the code or device identification in the app matches the display.
- Follow the instructions in Google Home.
Google’s labels can vary slightly by phone platform, region, and app redesign. The current general route is documented in Google’s speaker and display setup guidance.
Rank #2

5. Connect the Hub to Wi-Fi
- Select your intended home Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password carefully.
- Wait for Google Home to confirm the connection.
- Leave the Hub powered on while it completes any initial update.
Avoid choosing a guest network if you want the Hub to communicate with other devices on your main network. Guest-network isolation, captive portals, enterprise authentication, or router security settings can prevent setup or device-to-device control.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Nest speakers and displays remember one Wi-Fi network at a time. If the network name or password changes later, you may need to forget the old network and configure the Hub again.
6. Choose the room and finish setup
Select the room for the Hub and complete the remaining prompts. Optional account connections can be skipped and added later; they are not required for the display to perform basic functions.
When setup succeeds, the Hub should appear as a device tile in the selected Google Home and respond to touch. If the microphone is enabled, it should also respond to “Hey Google.”
Useful settings to configure after setup
Start with the required setup, then personalize the Hub at your own pace. Common options include:
- Device name and room: Use a clear name and accurate room assignment if you have multiple devices.
- Assistant language: Choose a supported language for your household.
- Voice Match: Set it up if you want Google Assistant to recognize individual users where available.
- Personal results: Decide whether account-specific calendars, reminders, or other information should be available on a shared display.
- Media services: Select default music or video providers, where supported.
- Photo frame: Choose the images or ambient display shown when the Hub is idle.
- Display controls: Adjust brightness and night mode.
- Alarms and timers: Review how the household wants reminders and alarms handled.
- Nest Hub Max camera: Review camera privacy settings separately from microphone settings.
- Nest Hub (2nd gen) Sleep Sensing: Review availability and data settings before enabling the feature.
Assistant features, media services, smart-home integrations, Sleep Sensing, languages, and personal results vary by country, account, device, and service provider.
Rank #3
- Google Nest Hub 1st Gen H1A – 7-inch smart display with Google Assistant built in for hands-free help, smart home control, entertainment, and daily organization.
- Korean Spec Model – International/Korean version of the Google Nest Hub H1A. Language can be changed to English after setup through the Google Home app/device settings.
- Smart Home Control – Use voice commands or the touchscreen to control compatible smart lights, cameras, thermostats, plugs, speakers, and other Google Assistant devices.
- Entertainment & Daily Help – Stream music, watch videos, view Google Photos, check weather, set timers, manage reminders, follow recipes, and get answers hands-free.
- Compact 7" Display Design – Great for kitchens, bedrooms, desks, offices, counters, and nightstands with a clean modern smart display design.
Microphone and camera privacy
The physical microphone switch on the rear of the Hub disables the microphones. The display indicates when the microphones are muted, and “Hey Google” voice interaction will not work until the switch is turned back on.
On a Nest Hub Max, the camera has separate privacy implications. Muting the microphones does not make the camera equivalent to a camera-free display, so review the camera controls independently. Voice Match and Personal Results can also expose account-specific information on a shared household device; enable them only if that arrangement is appropriate.
For Google’s explanations of privacy-related controls and account features, refer to Google’s Nest Hub and Hub Max help documentation.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTest that setup worked
Run these simple checks:
- Tap and swipe the screen to confirm touch input works.
- With the microphone enabled, ask: “Hey Google, what time is it?”
- Ask: “Hey Google, what’s the weather?”
- Say: “Hey Google, set a timer for one minute,” then cancel it.
- Play a sample song or podcast if a media service is linked.
- Confirm that the Hub appears online in the correct Google Home and room.
Test other compatible smart-home devices only after the Hub itself is working. Individual commands and services may not be available in every language or region.
Common setup problems and fixes
| Problem | Try first |
|---|---|
| Google Home cannot find the Hub | Confirm it is powered on and finished booting, move the phone closer, update Google Home, close and reopen the app, and restart the phone and Hub. |
| Wi-Fi password is rejected | Re-enter the password, verify that you selected the intended network, move beside the router, and restart the router, phone, and Hub. |
| Google Home says it cannot communicate with the device | Check internet service, disable unusual VPN or security settings temporarily, try another compatible phone, and check the router configuration. |
| The Hub appears offline | Check the router and internet connection, update Google Home, restart the Hub, and check Google or Nest service status. |
| “Hey Google” does not work | Check the rear microphone switch, device connection, Assistant language, and Voice Match settings. A muted microphone is not the same as a Wi-Fi failure. |
| A used Hub cannot be claimed | Ask the previous owner to remove it from their Google Home, or factory-reset it before setting it up under the new account. |
Google’s broader troubleshooting guidance recommends checking app versions, internet availability, router settings, and service status before resetting a device. See Google’s troubleshooting steps.
When your Wi-Fi network changes
If the Hub was working before but your router, network name, or Wi-Fi password changed, use the existing device tile when possible:
- Open Google Home.
- Tap the Hub’s device tile.
- Open Settings → Device information → Wi-Fi.
- Tap Forget this network.
- Return to the Home screen.
- Use Add → Device → Search for device.
- Follow the setup instructions for the new network.
If Google Home cannot communicate with the Hub or cannot complete the forget-network process, a factory reset may be necessary. The exact labels may differ in a newer version of the app. Google documents this flow at its Wi-Fi reconnection help page.

Setting up a used or gifted Nest Hub
A second-hand or gifted Hub may still be associated with another person’s Google Home or Wi-Fi network. The cleanest process is:
- Ask the previous owner to remove the Hub from their Google Home.
- If that is not possible, factory-reset the Hub.
- Set it up as a new device using your Google Account.
If the previous owner used a Nest Hub (2nd gen) with Sleep Sensing, ask them to review relevant data before the device is reset or transferred.
How to factory-reset a Google Nest Hub
Use a factory reset only after checking the app, network, power, and account. On a Nest Hub, press and hold both rear volume buttons for about 10 seconds until the device confirms that it is resetting.
A factory reset is irreversible. It clears device data and disconnects the device from home members. Google also warns that some basic device information may remain associated with the home. For a second-generation Hub, review Sleep Sensing data first if that feature was used. A reset cannot be performed by voice or from the Google Home app. See Google’s reset instructions for model-specific guidance.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set up a Google Nest Hub without a phone?
No. Google’s current setup requirements call for the Google Home app on a compatible Android or Apple mobile device or tablet; a computer cannot substitute for it.
Can I use an iPad to set up a Nest Hub?
Yes, provided the iPad meets Google’s current iOS/iPadOS requirement and can install the Google Home app. Requirements can change, so check Google’s current support page before setup.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do I need a Nest subscription for ordinary Nest Hub setup?
No subscription is required for the basic setup process. Optional services and features may have their own requirements.
Can several people use one Nest Hub?
Yes. A household can share the device, but Voice Match and Personal Results should be configured carefully because they can provide account-specific information on a shared display.
Can I set up a Nest Hub on guest Wi-Fi?
It may work in some networks, but guest-network isolation or other router restrictions can block discovery and communication with other devices. The main home network is usually the more reliable choice for a household Hub.
What happens if I factory-reset a used Nest Hub?
The reset removes the device’s configuration and disconnects it from home members, allowing you to set it up as new. It is irreversible, so review relevant Sleep Sensing data on a second-generation Hub beforehand.
