To set up an indoor TV antenna, connect its coaxial cable to the television’s antenna input, choose antenna or broadcast mode, and run a channel scan. If reception is weak or channels are missing, test the antenna in a higher location near a window, adjust its position, and scan again. Reception varies by address and home, so a scan cannot guarantee a particular channel lineup.
Check your TV and local reception first
Your television or connected receiver needs a compatible digital over-the-air tuner. If the TV does not have one, you will need a compatible tuner or converter box between the antenna and TV. For basic connection principles, see the FCC converter-box guide; because it covers the digital transition, use your device’s current manual for model-specific instructions.
Before choosing an indoor VHF/UHF TV antenna, check which stations and reception conditions are reported for your address with the FCC DTV reception map. Local stations may use different broadcast bands, and the antenna must support the bands you need. Neither a map nor an antenna can guarantee reception inside a particular home.
Connect the antenna and scan for channels
- Turn off the TV and connect the antenna’s coaxial plug to the port labeled Antenna, ANT IN, or Ant/Cable In.
- If you are using a separate tuner or converter, connect the antenna to that device’s antenna input, then connect its output to the TV as directed in its manual.
- Turn on the TV or receiver. In its setup or channel menu, choose the antenna, air, or broadcast input rather than cable, if those options are offered.
- Start the channel scan, sometimes labeled “auto scan” or “channel search.” Menu names and paths differ by model; follow the TV or receiver manual if the labels are different.
Allow the scan to finish before checking the saved channels. If you later move or rotate the antenna, run another scan so the tuner checks for channels from the new position.

Find a better antenna position
The Federal Communications Commission says, “The location of an indoor antenna is key,” in its consumer alert, Consumer Alert: Double Check & Relocate Your Antenna. Treat placement as trial and error rather than a fixed rule:
- Begin in a high position, near a window if practical.
- Try different spots and orientations; the top of the TV is not necessarily best.
- Keep the antenna away from the TV and other electronics where possible.
- If you know the direction of the relevant transmitter, test aiming toward it.
- After each meaningful change, wait for the tuner to respond and scan again.
If the TV or receiver provides a signal-strength display, use it to compare locations. A stronger reading can help identify a better position, but it does not by itself establish which channels will remain stable; check actual reception after scanning.

- Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).
Troubleshoot missing or unstable channels
- No channels found: Check that the coaxial plug is secure at the antenna and the correct tuner input, and confirm that the TV or receiver is set to antenna, air, or broadcast mode. Run the scan again.
- Some channels are missing: Reposition or rotate the antenna, then rescan. Confirm that the antenna supports the VHF or UHF bands used by the stations you want to receive.
- Picture or sound drops out: Try a different location, preferably higher and near a window, and keep the antenna away from nearby electronics. Compare positions using a signal-strength display if available.
- Reception remains inadequate: Indoor reception may not be sufficient at your address. The FCC notes that an outdoor antenna may be needed in some situations; an indoor antenna cannot guarantee a usable signal in every home.
Use one antenna with more than one TV
A coaxial splitter can feed multiple TVs if the incoming signal is strong enough, but splitting the connection may leave insufficient signal for reliable reception. Test reception at each connected TV. A manufacturer setup guide also identifies separate antennas as an alternative. An amplifier is not an automatic fix; first establish whether a direct connection and better antenna placement provide adequate reception.
