Start with smart plugs, bulbs or other devices that connect directly to your home Wi‑Fi, then add them through one platform app such as Google Home, Alexa or Apple Home. This avoids buying a separate, standalone hub, but it does not guarantee a completely hub-free system. A speaker, display, streaming device or router may provide hub functions inside an ecosystem, and Thread devices need a Thread border router. Matter devices can also require a hub-capable device for onboarding, automations, notifications or control while you are away.
The most dependable low-cost starting point is a Matter-over-Wi‑Fi plug or bulb that your chosen app explicitly supports. Check your router’s IPv6 capability first, especially for Google Home, because Matter setup can appear to succeed and then fail during normal control if IPv6 is unavailable.

What “without a hub” really means
In smart-home shopping, “hub-free” usually means you are not buying a dedicated standalone box that coordinates every accessory. A Wi‑Fi device can join your existing wireless network and communicate through the manufacturer’s or platform app. You still have a router, phone and internet connection; you are simply avoiding an additional radio bridge.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The phrase does not mean every feature works without a hub-capable device. A platform may use a compatible speaker, display, streamer or other device as its home hub. That device can handle Matter onboarding, local automations, Thread networking or remote access even though you did not purchase a product marketed as a separate hub. Requirements vary by ecosystem, protocol and device category.

- Wi‑Fi smart devices: connect directly to the home router. They are the simplest route to a no-separate-hub installation.
- Matter over Wi‑Fi: uses your existing Wi‑Fi network, but the selected platform may still require a Matter-enabled hub device.
- Matter over Thread: uses a low-power mesh radio and requires a compatible Thread border router.
- Remote control and some automations: may depend on a platform home hub and an internet connection, even when the accessory itself connects locally.
Therefore, define your goal precisely: “no dedicated hub” is realistic; “no device in the home ever performs hub functions” often is not.
Can I use smart plugs and bulbs without a hub?
Yes, when the plug or bulb supports direct Wi‑Fi setup and the app you chose supports its device category. A Matter-over-Wi‑Fi plug or bulb is a sensible first purchase because it uses the home network instead of a separate Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread bridge. Confirm the Matter logo, the stated Wi‑Fi protocol and the supported platforms on the package or manufacturer page.
A Matter label by itself is not proof that an ecosystem needs no hub-capable device. For example, Google Home requires a Matter-enabled hub before you add Matter accessories. The accessory can use Wi‑Fi rather than Thread, but the platform hub requirement still applies. Check the current compatibility information because supported device types and platform requirements change. Google’s preparation guidance notes that device support evolves and directs users to current developer documentation rather than treating an older list as complete: Google’s Matter preparation guidance.

Pick one primary app first. Your choice determines which devices can be commissioned, which hub-capable products are acceptable and which features work away from home.
Decide which features you actually need
- Basic control: turning a lamp or appliance on and off from your phone.
- Voice control: commands through a compatible speaker or phone assistant.
- Routines: schedules, sunrise triggers, occupancy actions or multi-device scenes.
- Notifications: alerts from sensors, appliances or security accessories.
- Away-from-home control: operating devices while your phone is not connected to the house.
- Multi-platform sharing: exposing one Matter accessory to more than one certified app.
If you only need local control of a few Wi‑Fi plugs, a manufacturer app may be sufficient. If you want a growing, mixed-brand installation, choose a major platform and verify its current Matter support before purchasing hardware.

Check your network and phone
- Use a stable home Wi‑Fi network with coverage where each accessory will be installed.
- Confirm the platform supports the required 2.4 GHz or dual-band setup if the device specifies it.
- For Google Home Matter installations, verify that IPv6 is enabled on the home network. Google warns that setup may initially appear successful without IPv6, while control and other functions later fail because Matter requires it: Google Home and Nest Help.
- Use a current Android or iOS device with the platform app updated.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled during commissioning. Google lists Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher as a requirement for pairing Matter devices.
Wi‑Fi or Thread: which should you use?
| Decision point | Matter over Wi‑Fi | Matter over Thread |
|---|---|---|
| Radio used by the accessory | Your home Wi‑Fi network | Thread low-power mesh network |
| Extra network requirement | Reliable Wi‑Fi and, for Google Home, IPv6 | A compatible Thread border router |
| Best first use | Plugs, bulbs and other mains-powered devices when you want the simplest setup | Battery sensors and low-power accessories, provided the ecosystem supports Thread |
| Can the accessory itself replace a platform hub? | No general guarantee; platform rules still apply | No; a border router is needed for Thread connectivity |
| Remote control | Depends on the platform’s home-hub requirements | Depends on both the border router and platform home-hub requirements |
For a first device, Wi‑Fi is usually easier because there is no separate Thread network to establish. Choose Thread when you specifically want its low-power mesh behavior and have confirmed that your ecosystem includes a compatible border router or hub-capable speaker or display.
Step-by-step: set up a hub-free-first smart home
1. Select one primary ecosystem
Install the app for the platform you intend to use and review its current supported device categories. Decide whether you can accept a hub-capable speaker or display for Matter onboarding, automations or away-from-home control. Write down the features you need before buying accessories; a device that works for basic local switching may not support your desired notifications or routines.
2. Buy one compatible Wi‑Fi Matter accessory
Start with a Matter-over-Wi‑Fi smart plug or bulb. Look for all three of these details:
- The Matter logo or explicit Matter support.
- Wi‑Fi listed as the transport, rather than Thread-only operation.
- Your chosen app and device category listed as supported.
Do not assume that a Matter accessory works identically in every app. Platform certification, supported device types and hub requirements are separate checks.
3. Prepare the network
Place the accessory within reliable Wi‑Fi range, update the router firmware if appropriate and confirm IPv6 when using Google Home. If you are uncertain whether IPv6 is available, check the router manual or ask your internet service provider before pairing. A network that blocks local-device discovery, isolates clients or relies on aggressive security filtering can interrupt commissioning.

4. Install and prepare the app
- Install the current version of your chosen home app.
- Sign in and create or select the correct home and room.
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone or tablet used for setup.
- Make sure the phone is connected to the intended home network.
5. Power the accessory and start Matter pairing
Plug in the device or install the bulb, then put it into pairing mode according to its instructions. In the platform app, choose the option to add a Matter device. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric setup key when prompted. Keep the phone close to the accessory until commissioning completes.
Google’s documented flow then lets you name the device and assign it to a room. Its detailed instructions are available at Set up, manage and control Matter-enabled devices with Google Home.
6. Give it a useful name and test locally
Use a distinct name such as “Kitchen table lamp” rather than a generic label like “Plug 1.” Test on/off control while your phone is connected to the home network. If the device responds locally, test the exact routine or voice command you intend to use.
7. Test away-from-home behavior before expanding
Turn off the phone’s Wi‑Fi or leave the property and try the control you care about. Matter commands can operate locally while you are home, but Google states that remote control from away uses an internet connection and the platform hub. If away control fails, the accessory may be fine; the missing requirement may be the ecosystem’s home-hub path.
8. Add devices one at a time
Install a second plug or bulb only after the first has worked through local, voice and remote tests. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem comes from the network, a particular accessory or the platform.

Platform-specific limits you need to know
Google Home
Google requires a Matter-enabled hub before Matter devices can be added. A Wi‑Fi Matter accessory does not need Thread radio itself, but the platform hub requirement remains. If you mix Wi‑Fi and Thread accessories, the hub also needs to be a Thread border router for the Thread devices.
Google lists IPv6, a compatible mobile device, Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or newer and the current Home app among its preparation requirements. Without IPv6, setup can appear to work temporarily but control and other Matter functions can later fail. Use the official preparation and setup pages for current requirements: Prepare your smart home for Matter and Set up, manage and control Matter-enabled devices with Google Home.
Alexa
Amazon’s developer documentation describes local connectivity paths that can work without a separate standalone hub, including Matter over Wi‑Fi and Matter over Thread: Other Local Connectivity Protocol Options for Smart Home Devices. Consumer setup still refers to a compatible Alexa hub or device, and Thread commissioning needs an online Thread-enabled device. Keep the claim narrow: a particular supported device and service path may avoid a separate hub, but that is not a promise for every Alexa installation.
Follow the device’s current consumer pairing instructions, including Amazon’s Matter setup guidance at Connect Matter Smart Home Devices to Alexa.

Apple Home
Apple says remote control requires a home hub. Thread accessories can also require a Thread-enabled home hub or a third-party Thread border router for automations, notifications or remote control. Apple’s current compatibility and troubleshooting requirements are summarized in Thread Border Router Required or Needs Thread Network. A Wi‑Fi accessory may be usable for local control without adding a separate bridge, but do not assume that remote access or every automation will work without a home hub.

Using one Matter device in more than one app
Matter multi-admin lets you share a commissioned accessory with more than one certified platform app. This is useful when household members use different assistants or when you want to move devices between ecosystems without resetting each one.
There is an important limitation: Google says each app needs its own Matter hub. Sharing a device with another app therefore does not remove that app’s infrastructure requirements. Commission the accessory in the first app, use its sharing or multi-admin option, then complete the second app’s setup and verify control separately.
Troubleshooting pairing and control failures
The app cannot find the accessory
- Confirm the phone is on the intended home Wi‑Fi network rather than a guest network.
- Turn Bluetooth on and move the phone close to the accessory.
- Check that the accessory is in pairing mode and that its QR code or setup key is readable.
- Verify that the device uses the protocol you expected: Wi‑Fi Matter is different from Thread Matter.
- Confirm that the platform supports the accessory’s category and model.
Setup finishes, but control later fails
- For Google Home, check IPv6 first; Google specifically warns that missing IPv6 can allow apparent setup success followed by failed control.
- Check whether your platform requires a Matter-enabled hub even for Wi‑Fi accessories.
- Restart the accessory, router and any hub-capable speaker or display.
- Temporarily review VPN, firewall or network-security software that could block local discovery.
A Thread accessory reports that a border router is required
Add or enable a compatible Thread border router in the selected ecosystem. A Wi‑Fi router alone does not provide Thread service. Apple’s support guidance explains the “Thread Border Router Required” and “Needs Thread Network” alerts: Apple Support.
Several accessories stop responding
Check the router and internet connection, then update manufacturer firmware and platform apps. Restart the accessories and any home hubs. If one accessory remains unreliable, remove it from the app, reset it using the manufacturer’s procedure and pair it again. Apple’s troubleshooting instructions also recommend reviewing VPN or network-security software when multiple devices fail: If your HomeKit or Matter accessory isn’t responding in the Home app.
How to expand without creating a fragile system
Keep a record of each accessory’s protocol, room, platform and reset method. Group devices by room and use names that describe the physical location. Before buying a new category—such as a sensor, lock or thermostat—check the platform’s current compatibility list rather than relying on an older Matter chart. Support changes as platforms add device types and firmware updates.
Prefer one primary ecosystem for routines and notifications. Adding a second app is worthwhile when you need a specific assistant or household-sharing feature, but each platform can introduce its own hub, account and remote-access requirements. For battery devices, Thread can be attractive once a border router is available; for a first mains-powered accessory, Wi‑Fi Matter generally keeps the installation simpler.
A practical decision checklist
- Want the fewest new boxes? Choose a supported Wi‑Fi smart plug or bulb and use the platform app you already prefer.
- Planning Google Home Matter? Provide a Matter-enabled hub, enable IPv6 and use a compatible phone with Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or newer.
- Want Thread sensors? Confirm a compatible Thread border router before purchasing the accessories.
- Need away-from-home control? Verify the platform’s home-hub and internet requirements; local pairing alone does not prove remote access.
- Need two ecosystems? Use Matter multi-admin only after checking that each app has the required Matter hub.
- Unsure about a device? Do not buy until the packaging or current compatibility list names your platform and the exact device category.
A hub-free-first approach works best when you treat “hub” as a feature requirement rather than a product label. You can avoid a dedicated standalone hub for many Wi‑Fi accessories, but reliable Matter, Thread, automation and remote-control features still depend on the capabilities of the platform and network you choose.
