A microphone blimp is a basket-style windshield with an internal suspension: the basket reduces wind noise, while the suspension helps isolate the microphone from handling and vibration. To set one up, confirm the microphone fits the exact kit, mount it without letting the microphone or cable touch the basket, secure the end caps and cable, and make a short test recording before the take.

What a microphone blimp does

A blimp encloses a microphone in a basket, typically supported by an internal suspension. The basket shields the microphone from wind; the suspension helps limit handling and vibration noise. Rycote describes its Modular Windshield as a system for wind protection and shock isolation. Its listed components include a windshield, Lyre suspension, Windjammer, Connbox and mounting accessories.

Not every microphone windscreen is a blimp. Rycote’s smaller BBG slip-on windshield grips the microphone body and is intended for shorter microphones and some low-profile setups. It is a different form factor from a full basket system.

Will your microphone fit?

Check the microphone’s length and diameter against the compatibility information for the exact windshield kit or configuration. Also verify capsule position, connector clearance and whether the intended suspension supports that microphone. Rycote says its complete modular kits are configured for specific microphone dimensions, while modular components can be retrofitted for different lengths or diameters.

  • FITS DIRECTIONAL MICS 15 TO 25mm DIAMETER: Internal microphone suspension holds directional microphones from 15mm to 25mm in diameter and up to 38cm in length. Works with most professional boom-style microphone models

If the microphone is not listed, do not assume it will fit based on brand or appearance alone. Confirm measurements and compatibility with the manufacturer before assembling the rig. A microphone that is too long, too wide or poorly seated may contact the basket or fail to sit securely in the suspension.

How to install a microphone in a blimp

  1. Check the kit and microphone dimensions. Confirm compatibility before opening or modifying the assembly. Use the instructions for your specific windshield and suspension.
  2. Open the basket. On the Rycote Modular Windshield, both end caps can be removed to place the microphone inside. Other models may open differently.
  3. Seat the microphone in its suspension. Use the suspension specified for the microphone and kit. Center and secure the microphone so it is supported rather than resting against the basket.
  4. Check internal clearance. Ensure the microphone, cable and suspension do not press against or rattle on the basket. Rycote describes its soft Connbox cable arrangement as designed to avoid touching the internal windshield surface and to reduce cable vibration.
  5. Refit the end caps and mounting hardware. Lock the caps in place, then attach the supplied grip or boom adapter as appropriate. Hardware and locking mechanisms vary by kit; Rycote describes its twist-and-turn end caps as secure and rattle-free.
  6. Connect and control the cable. Leave enough slack for the rig to move without pulling on the microphone, but keep the cable from tapping or rubbing the basket. In the RØDE Blimp manual, users of its Blimp Pro cable are instructed to secure it at the rear cable grommet, connect it to the microphone and adjust the handle angle. Follow the manual for your own model rather than applying those model-specific steps universally.
  7. Add a compatible furry cover if needed. A Windjammer fits over the windshield for additional wind protection. Seat it correctly and check that it does not interfere with the rig’s operation.
  8. Record a short test and listen. Check for wind rumble, cable taps, handling noise, contact or rattling before starting the main take.

When to use a furry cover

A furry cover, often called a Windjammer, goes over a compatible basket windshield when more wind protection is needed. Rycote describes the Windjammer as providing “the highest possible protection against extreme wind-noise”; that is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent comparative finding.

Choosing a windshield configuration

Start with fit, then weigh the conditions and handling needs of the recording. Rycote offers full modular basket systems, smaller BBG slip-on options and the Nano Shield family; its product pages describe different configurations, not an independent head-to-head test.
