The original JBL Bar 5.1 and the JBL Bar 5.1 Surround both use detachable rear speakers and a wireless subwoofer, but their controls and calibration procedures differ. Identify your model first, then connect the TV, pair the subwoofer, position the rear speakers, calibrate the system, and tune the sound.
1. Identify your JBL 5.1 model first
“JBL 5.1 Sound Bar” is not a single unambiguous product name. Check the label on the soundbar, subwoofer, packaging, or original manual before following any button sequence.

Original JBL Bar 5.1
- Has two detachable wireless surround speakers that dock onto the bar for charging.
- The original documentation lists three HDMI inputs, one HDMI ARC output, optical and analog inputs, Bluetooth, and USB.
- Its factory reset uses the soundbar’s Volume –, Volume +, and Source controls together.
- Its audio reset uses the remote’s Sound button held for five seconds.
See the original JBL Bar 5.1 owner’s manual.
JBL Bar 5.1 Surround
- Also includes detachable rear speakers and a wireless subwoofer.
- Uses different remote controls and display messages.
- Documents a five-level subwoofer setting from 1 to 5, with level 3 as the default.
- Uses a two-stage calibration process: 1-CALIBRATION for the listening zone and 2-CALIBRATION for final speaker position.
Use the matching Bar 5.1 Surround manual. Do not apply one model’s reset or calibration instructions to the other.

2. Check the accessories
A complete system normally includes:
- Main soundbar
- Wireless subwoofer
- Two detachable wireless surround speakers
- Remote control and batteries
- Power cables
- HDMI and/or optical cable, depending on the market and package
- Calibration microphone, where supplied with the model
For a used unit, missing accessories can look like equipment failure. In particular, the correct remote may be needed for calibration and pairing functions, while a missing calibration microphone can prevent microphone-based setup on the original Bar 5.1.

3. Place the hardware before connecting it
- Center the soundbar beneath or directly in front of the TV.
- Keep its front and top surfaces clear, and do not block the TV’s infrared receiver.
- Put the subwoofer on the floor near the front of the room initially. Move it later if bass sounds boomy or unusually weak.
- Place the detachable rear speakers beside or slightly behind the main listening position.
- Put the speaker marked L on the listener’s left and R on the listener’s right.
- Face the rear speakers toward the listening area.
- During pairing and calibration, keep the bar and rear speakers visible to one another. Avoid cabinets, metal furniture, and heavy obstructions.
JBL’s calibration guidance specifically calls for correct left/right placement and a clear line of sight between the soundbar and rear speakers.
4. Connect the soundbar to the TV
Preferred connection: HDMI ARC
Use the TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC and the soundbar’s HDMI output marked TV ARC or equivalent.
- Connect the HDMI cable between those two labeled ports.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV if required. TV manufacturers may call this Anynet+, Simplink, Bravia Sync, Viera Link, or another name.
- Set the TV audio output to External Speakers, Receiver, HDMI ARC, or the equivalent menu option.
- Set digital audio output to Auto, Bitstream, or the manufacturer’s equivalent. If the bar remains silent, test PCM.
- Select the JBL bar’s TV input with the remote.
- Test live TV or a streaming app.
A TV’s eARC socket does not automatically make an older JBL bar eARC-capable. The bar still operates according to its own ARC implementation and supported formats.

Optical is a useful fallback when the TV has no ARC port or HDMI-CEC causes repeated handshakes or input switching.
- Remove any protective caps from the optical cable.
- Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input.
- Select the soundbar’s TV or optical input.
- Set the TV audio output to optical or external speakers.
- If there is no sound, test PCM first, then a supported compressed surround option such as Dolby Digital where available.
Optical is simpler, but it generally provides less integration with the TV remote and fewer options than HDMI.

Connecting a console, Blu-ray player, or set-top box
When the TV does not pass the desired audio format correctly, connect the source device directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar, then connect the soundbar’s ARC output to the TV’s ARC port. Select the relevant HDMI input on the JBL remote.
JBL support indicates that compatible Dolby Atmos or DTS:X playback may require direct connection to the soundbar’s HDMI input in some setups. Support depends on the exact Bar 5.1 revision, source device, TV, HDMI path, and firmware; do not assume every JBL 5.1 variant supports every immersive format. See JBL’s HDMI and surround-format guidance.
5. Power on and pair the subwoofer
- Connect both the soundbar and subwoofer to power.
- Turn on the soundbar.
- Wait for the subwoofer connection indicator to become steady.
- Play content and confirm that bass is present.
On the original Bar 5.1, JBL identifies a solid white subwoofer LED as connected. A blinking white indicator means the connection has been lost and manual pairing may be required.
If the subwoofer does not connect
- Confirm both units are powered and the bar is not muted.
- Move the subwoofer closer temporarily.
- Power-cycle the bar and subwoofer.
- Reduce nearby wireless interference where practical.
- Check that the correct source is selected and producing audio.
- Only then use the model-specific manual-pairing procedure.
Do not use a button combination from another JBL revision. Pairing instructions vary by model.
6. Charge and position the detachable rear speakers
- Dock both rear speakers on the soundbar and charge them fully.
- Detach them and confirm the left/right markings.
- Place L on the listener’s left and R on the listener’s right.
- Position them beside or slightly behind the seating area.
- Keep a clear wireless path during initial setup.
Rear speakers do not guarantee constant discrete effects. Their output depends on the source mix and selected sound mode. Stereo music or ordinary TV programming may produce ambience rather than obvious directional rear-channel effects.

7. Calibrate the system
Original JBL Bar 5.1: microphone calibration
- Complete the basic TV and power connections.
- Detach the wireless surround speakers.
- Plug the supplied calibration microphone into the soundbar.
- Place the microphone at ear height at the main listening position.
- Point the rear speakers toward the listening area.
- Remove objects or people between the microphone, bar, and rear speakers.
- Hold the calibration control for three seconds.
- Wait for the countdown and calibration tones to finish.
- If calibration fails, reposition the microphone or speakers and retry.
Use the original Bar 5.1 manual to identify the calibration control on your remote.

Pass one: listening zone
- Place both rear speakers beside the seating position.
- Hold HDMI on the remote until 1-CALIBRATION appears.
- Let the countdown run.
- Wait for CALIBRATING.
- Confirm that 1-DONE appears.
Pass two: final speaker position
- Move the rear speakers to their final positions.
- Hold HDMI until 2-CALIBRATION appears.
- Allow the tones to run.
- Confirm 2-DONE.
- Choose the preferred surround level where the remote offers low, middle/default, or high options.
During calibration, JBL says most remote controls are disabled except standby and HDMI. SETUP FAILED means the process did not complete successfully. Follow JBL’s Bar 5.1 Surround calibration instructions.
Calibration failure recovery
- Quiet the room.
- Verify L/R orientation.
- Place the microphone at ear height where applicable.
- Clear the path between the bar, microphone, and rear speakers.
- Move the rear speakers closer temporarily.
- Check power and wireless indicators.
- For the Surround model, repeat the listening-zone pass before the final-position pass.
8. Tune the sound after calibration
Sound modes
The original Bar 5.1 manual lists Standard, Music, Movie, Voice, and Sports modes.
- Standard: sensible starting point for general listening.
- Music: intended for music playback.
- Movie: can provide a broader, more ambient presentation.
- Voice: favors dialogue clarity.
- Sports: can emphasize crowd and program ambience.
Rear-speaker output can vary by mode. Some content and modes may send ambience or a mono mix rather than discrete effects.
Bass and surround level
Start at the default bass setting and make one-step changes from the listening position. Increase bass if the system sounds thin; reduce it if voices are masked or the room becomes boomy. On the Bar 5.1 Surround, the documented subwoofer range is 1–5, with 3 as the default.

- 780W POWER & WIRELESS SUBWOOFER: Feel every explosion, drop, and bass line in your chest. This sound system pumps out 780W max with deep, thundering low end from a 10" wireless subwoofer—your couch will never feel the same.

- PUREVOICE 2.0 DIALOGUE CLARITY: Never rewind to catch a whispered line again. PureVoice 2.0 automatically optimizes dialogue based on scene and volume—so every word cuts through clearly, even during the loudest action sequences.
Night mode
On the original Bar 5.1, night mode reduces loud peaks and is available for Dolby Digital or DTS soundtracks. It is useful for late-night viewing, but reduces dynamic impact.
Dialogue and lip-sync
- Try Voice mode.
- Reduce excessive bass.
- Confirm the TV’s internal speakers are disabled.
- Check whether the source is stereo, Dolby Digital, or another format.
- Use night mode only when volume swings—not dialogue balance—are the main issue.
The original Bar 5.1 provides AUDIO SYNC +/– controls. Adjust in small increments and return the setting to zero if you later change the TV, source device, or connection.
9. Test the completed setup
- Speech: voices should be clear and centered.
- Action or multichannel content: listen for activity from the rear speakers and subwoofer.
- Music: check whether the bass is controlled rather than boomy.
- TV remote: confirm volume commands operate the soundbar through ARC or the chosen connection.
- Bluetooth: verify that the soundbar can play a separate wireless source if needed.
If the rear speakers are quiet with stereo content, test a known multichannel movie or surround test source before assuming they are defective.
10. Troubleshoot common JBL 5.1 problems
| Symptom | Checks and recovery |
|---|---|
| No sound | Select the correct JBL input, unmute the bar, choose external TV speakers, verify the ARC port or optical connection, and test PCM. |
| Intermittent TV sound over HDMI | Power-cycle the TV and bar, reconnect only the ARC path, verify HDMI-CEC, and try optical if the handshake remains unreliable. |
| No surround | Charge and detach the rear speakers, verify L/R placement, test multichannel content, and rerun calibration. |
| No bass | Check the subwoofer indicator, move it closer, power-cycle both units, confirm the source, and raise bass one step. |
| Echo or doubled sound | Disable the TV’s internal speakers and select external audio only. |
| Weak rear speakers | Test Movie or Standard mode with multichannel content. Rear output may be ambience rather than full-range or discrete effects. |
| Calibration fails | Quiet the room, correct L/R placement, use ear-level microphone placement, clear obstructions, move the rears closer, and retry. |
| Remote does not work | Replace batteries, aim at the bar, select the correct source, and test the soundbar’s physical controls. |
| Sound became wrong after adjustments | Reset audio settings first. Use a factory reset only after checking cables, inputs, pairing, and TV settings. |
| Firmware issue suspected | Verify the exact model and region before downloading or applying an update. |
11. Firmware updates and resets
Bar 5.1 Surround firmware procedure
JBL’s published procedure for the Bar 5.1 Surround describes the following process:
- Hold Volume – and Source together to display the current software version.
- Download an update only if JBL provides one for the exact model and region.
- Copy
Update.zipandChecksum.txtto the root of an empty USB drive. - Hold Power and Source for more than 10 seconds as directed.
- Insert the USB drive into the rear USB port.
- Hold Power and Volume – for more than 10 seconds to begin.
- Wait for UPDATING and allow the bar to reboot completely.
- Recheck the software version.
See JBL’s Bar 5.1 Surround firmware instructions. Do not generalize this sequence to the original Bar 5.1 or another regional revision.

Audio reset versus factory reset
An audio reset removes sound adjustments and is the safer first step when calibration, modes, bass, or delay settings have produced an odd result. A factory reset clears broader settings and may remove pairing and calibration data; it cannot repair failed batteries, power supplies, wireless modules, or other hardware.
For the original Bar 5.1:
- Audio reset: hold Sound on the remote for five seconds.
- Factory reset: hold Volume –, Volume +, and Source on the soundbar’s top panel.
Confirm the procedure in the manual for your exact revision before resetting.
12. Used-market checks and practical replacements
Before buying a used JBL 5.1, check that the detachable speaker batteries still hold charge, the correct remote and calibration microphone are included, and the subwoofer belongs to the same model family. A seller may use “JBL 5.1” to describe several different products. Region-specific firmware and missing power cables are additional risks.
If an accessory is missing, look for an exact-model replacement remote, calibration microphone, power cable, or compatible mounting hardware through JBL support. For a failed ARC cable, a basic properly functioning HDMI cable is sufficient; premium branding does not improve sound. Optical is a practical alternative when ARC is unavailable or unreliable. Do not buy a replacement soundbar merely because setup is incomplete—first confirm the cable, input, pairing, and calibration checks.
Is the JBL 5.1 still suitable?
The system can remain practical when its detachable rear speakers, wireless subwoofer, and existing inputs meet your needs. It may be a poor fit if you require HDMI 2.1 gaming features, modern eARC bandwidth, broad lossless-format support, Wi-Fi or app-based room correction, easily sourced replacement speakers, or guaranteed compatibility with a new TV’s latest audio features.
When comparing a newer system, check eARC versus ARC, Dolby Atmos support, HDMI 2.1 features, Wi-Fi and app support, rear-speaker battery design, replacement-part availability, and the placement demands of the room. Current models and availability change, so verify details on JBL’s current soundbar page.
Correct setup order
For the most reliable result, follow this order: identify the model, place the components, connect the TV, pair the subwoofer, charge and position the rear speakers, calibrate, test, and only then tune bass, surround, sound mode, night mode, or lip-sync. That sequence separates a connection problem from a placement or calibration problem and avoids unnecessary factory resets.
