Short answer: In Google Maps, enter your destination, choose driving directions, open Route options, and turn on Avoid tolls. In Waze, open Settings → Navigation and enable Avoid toll roads; for only one journey, use Avoid on that trip’s route screen. Neither setting is an absolute guarantee. If every practical route includes a toll facility, or conditions change after you leave, the app can still propose one. Check the proposed route, live traffic information, construction and closure symbols, and roadside signs before following it.

What the two avoidance settings actually do

Google Maps and Waze treat toll avoidance as a routing preference. The apps try to find a reasonable alternative, but they do not promise a toll-free trip in every location. A bridge, tunnel, express lane or other controlled crossing may be the only usable connection, or a closure may remove the non-toll option. Waze explicitly warns that it may suggest toll roads, freeways or ferries even when the corresponding avoidance feature is enabled if that is what the available routes require.

Use the setting before you start, then inspect the route the app actually selected. A preference can influence the calculation without overriding a newly closed road, a restricted turn, a one-way system or local traffic rules. During the drive, navigation can recalculate as conditions change, so keep checking the route line and any alternate-route prompt.

Set Google Maps to avoid toll roads

Android and iPhone/iPad: route-specific setup

  1. Open Google Maps and search for the destination.
  2. Tap Directions, then select the driving mode.
  3. Review the route preview. Open Route options (on some screens this appears as the route-options control or a three-dot menu).
  4. Turn on Avoid tolls.
  5. If relevant to your trip, also select Avoid highways or Avoid ferries.
  6. Return to the route list and compare the alternatives, including the estimated time and distance. Select the route that satisfies your constraints, then tap Start.

The exact placement of the route-options control can vary with phone, app version and screen size, but it is part of the driving-directions preview rather than the general map display. If you do not see it immediately, expand the route card or open the additional-options menu.

Check the route before navigation begins

Do not assume that enabling the switch selected a completely different road. Zoom into the full route and look for toll-road labels, toll icons or a segment that crosses a known tolled bridge or tunnel. Tap each offered route to see its details. A route with no toll charge can still use a motorway or expressway, while a route that avoids highways may add substantial local-road time. Choose based on the restriction that matters to you, not simply on the first line shown.

Using the setting while already driving

If you started navigation and then decide to avoid tolls, open the navigation controls, return to route options, and enable Avoid tolls before accepting a new route. The controls shown can differ by device and driving state. Pull over or have a passenger make the change; never operate the phone while moving. Review the proposed reroute on the map and accept it only when it is safe and legal.

Set Waze to avoid toll roads

Make avoidance a standing preference

  1. Open Waze.
  2. Open the main menu and tap Settings.
  3. Choose Navigation.
  4. Turn on Avoid toll roads.
  5. While you are in the same section, decide whether Avoid freeways or Avoid ferries also applies to your driving.

This setting affects future routes until you turn it off. It is useful if toll roads are normally unacceptable, but check it before an unfamiliar trip: avoiding freeways can make a journey much longer, and avoiding ferries can remove the most direct crossing.

Apply avoidance to one Waze trip

  1. Search for the destination and select it from the results.
  2. Open the route screen and tap Avoid.
  3. Enable Avoid toll roads for that trip.
  4. Review the available routes, their travel times and the map, then choose the route you want to use.

The route-specific control is useful when you usually accept tolls but want to avoid them for a particular job, delivery or personal journey. Confirm that the option did not remain enabled as a permanent preference if you only intended a one-time change.

How to spot construction, closures and congestion before leaving

Google Maps traffic and incident layers

  1. Plan the driving route and zoom out far enough to see the entire trip.
  2. Open the map layers control and turn on the Traffic layer.
  3. Read the traffic colors: slower sections are shown with progressively heavier colors, while incident symbols identify events such as crashes, construction and road closures.
  4. Tap an incident symbol for the available details and expected effect, then compare alternate routes in the directions view.

Traffic colors are a snapshot, not a promise about the time you will reach a segment. A clear line can become congested after you leave, and an incident may be reported before its full impact appears in the travel estimate. If a work zone is on a critical part of the route, allow extra time rather than planning to arrive at the exact edge of the estimate.

Waze’s live incident view

Waze combines map data, public-authority information and reports from drivers. Look at the route preview for jam colors and incident icons before tapping Go, then watch for reroute prompts during the drive. Waze can offer a faster alternative when a crash, closure or queue changes the calculation. Open the alternative only when you can do so safely, and verify that it still respects your toll-road preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Report construction or a lane closure safely

Reporting can improve the information available to later drivers, but it is not a substitute for obeying a work-zone sign or a flagger. Make a report only when stopped legally or when a passenger can do it. Never handle the phone in moving traffic.

Google Maps on iPhone or iPad

  1. During navigation, open the reporting control.
  2. Choose Add a report.
  3. Select Construction or Lane closure, as applicable.
  4. Confirm the report only when the details are accurate and you can do so without distraction.

Google notes that incident-reporting choices can be limited by country. A report may therefore be unavailable in your region, on your device or in a particular navigation state.

What a report can and cannot do

  • It can: add a current observation that may help update the map and alert other drivers.
  • It cannot: guarantee that the closure will appear instantly, change traffic-control signs, or force every active route to avoid the location.
  • It should not: be used to report an unverified rumor or to operate the phone while driving.

Why an app may still route you onto a toll road

Cause What it means What to do
No practical toll-free route The remaining roads may be closed, disconnected, restricted or impractically slow. Inspect the alternatives and decide whether the toll is preferable to the detour. If you accept it, check the toll facility and payment requirements before proceeding.
Avoidance was not enabled for this trip Google Maps uses a route option; Waze has both a standing setting and a trip-specific Avoid control. Reopen the route options and verify the switch before starting navigation.
Settings changed after route calculation A route preview may have been calculated before you turned on avoidance, or a new destination may have loaded default preferences. Recalculate after changing the option and review the complete route again.
Dynamic rerouting A crash, closure or severe congestion can make the original non-toll route unavailable or much slower. Read the new route card before accepting it. If the app offers no suitable route, stop safely and reassess using current signs and local information.
Map or incident data is incomplete Construction, lane restrictions and toll status depend on current map, authority and user data, which can be delayed or wrong. Treat the display as assistance, not permission. Follow posted signs and traffic-control personnel.

Waze’s own help wording is direct: even with Avoid toll roads, freeways or ferries enabled, it may suggest one of those facilities “depending on the routes available at the time you’re driving.” That exception is normal behavior, not evidence that the switch failed.

Use the map and the road together during navigation

A practical pre-departure check

  • Confirm the destination address and the driving mode.
  • Verify Avoid tolls in Google Maps or Avoid toll roads in Waze.
  • Decide separately whether to avoid highways/freeways and ferries; these are independent preferences.
  • Turn on traffic information and scan for construction, closure, crash and queue symbols.
  • Open each realistic alternative and compare total time, distance, road type and any toll indication.
  • Allow a buffer for a work zone when the route passes through an area with active construction.

While you are on the road

  • Keep the phone mounted and navigation audio audible.
  • Watch for a safer alternate-route prompt, but do not tap it while moving unless a passenger is operating the phone.
  • If the app’s line conflicts with a closure sign, lane-control signal, police direction or road worker, obey the real-world instruction.
  • If you miss a turn, let the app recalculate rather than making an abrupt or illegal maneuver.
  • When a toll road appears unexpectedly, pull over safely before changing settings and inspect why the route was selected.

Google Maps advises drivers to stay aware and, when in doubt, follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path they are on. That principle applies equally to Waze: the phone is a navigation aid, while the road’s signs and authorized traffic personnel control the movement of vehicles.

Google Maps and Waze: which workflow fits your trip?

Need Google Maps Waze
Where to set toll avoidance Driving directions → Route options → Avoid tolls. Permanent: Settings → Navigation → Avoid toll roads. One trip: route screen → Avoid → Avoid toll roads.
Other avoidance choices Avoid highways and Avoid ferries. Avoid freeways and Avoid ferries.
Construction and closure visibility Traffic layer shows congestion and incident symbols for crashes, construction and road closures. Live traffic and driver/authority incident information appear on the route and map.
Reporting workflow During navigation, Add a report can include Construction and Lane closure on supported iPhone/iPad experiences; availability varies by country. Use the available in-app reporting controls only when stopped safely or with a passenger; the exact choices depend on location and app state.
How exceptions are explained Route options influence the calculation, while traffic and navigation data can trigger new alternatives. Waze explicitly says a toll road, freeway or ferry may still be suggested when available routes make it necessary.

Both services can reroute dynamically. The proposed route is therefore a current recommendation, not a contract that the entire journey will remain toll-free or construction-free.

Troubleshoot a route that ignores your preference

Google Maps checklist

  1. Stop somewhere safe and reopen the route preview.
  2. Open Route options and confirm Avoid tolls is still enabled.
  3. Check whether a newly selected destination, stop or travel mode changed the route calculation.
  4. Compare every offered route and inspect the map for a toll bridge, tunnel or express lane.
  5. Check the traffic layer for a closure that removed the expected alternative.
  6. If the route still appears unsuitable, choose a clearly toll-free alternative manually when one is offered, or follow local signs instead of forcing an unsafe maneuver.

Waze checklist

  1. Stop safely and check Settings → Navigation → Avoid toll roads.
  2. For the active trip, open the route screen and use Avoid to verify the trip-specific option.
  3. Look for a ferry, freeway or restricted crossing that may be affected by a separate preference or by a closure.
  4. Review the route alternatives and read the estimated time difference before selecting one.
  5. If Waze still shows only toll routes, assume the app considers them necessary under current conditions rather than repeatedly toggling the same control.

Construction-delay decisions for work and personal travel

When the detour is worth taking

For a short local trip, avoiding a construction segment may add only a few minutes and reduce uncertainty. For a long-distance drive, a non-toll detour can add enough distance and fuel use to exceed the toll’s cost or the delay you were trying to avoid. Compare the full journey, not just the first congested segment. A route that looks clear on the map may funnel traffic into another bottleneck farther ahead.

When to leave the app’s recommendation

Use independent judgment when a work zone has temporary signs, alternating one-way traffic, a flagger, a police officer or a lane arrangement that the map does not show. Construction data can lag behind a nighttime closure, a newly opened lane or a rapidly changing traffic pattern. Slow down, merge as directed and do not follow a colored route line into a prohibited lane.

For scheduled construction

If you know a project will affect a recurring commute or delivery, check the route before departure each day rather than relying on yesterday’s calculation. Keep the toll preference enabled, but also inspect the traffic layer and any alternate route. Conditions can differ by shift, weekend closure, event traffic or weather, and the app’s estimate may change after the first recalculation.

Key limitations to remember

  • Avoidance is a preference: neither service guarantees a toll-free route when no practical alternative exists.
  • Alerts are data-dependent: construction and closure information comes from map databases, public authorities and user reports and may be incomplete or delayed.
  • Features vary: reporting controls and route-screen labels can differ by country, device, app version and navigation state.
  • Separate controls matter: tolls, highways/freeways and ferries are distinct choices; enabling one does not automatically enable the others.
  • Real-world instructions win: signs, legal restrictions and traffic-control personnel take priority over either app.

A compact decision process

  1. Set the constraint: choose Avoid tolls/Avoid toll roads and decide separately about highways or ferries.
  2. Inspect before starting: compare routes, traffic colors, construction symbols, closure notices and total time.
  3. Drive defensively: keep alerts on, but make changes only when stopped or through a passenger.
  4. Recheck exceptions: if a toll route appears, determine whether the non-toll route was closed, blocked or removed by a new calculation.
  5. Follow the road: obey signs and authorized personnel even when they conflict with the screen.

This process gives you the best chance of avoiding both unnecessary toll charges and preventable construction delays without treating either app’s route as infallible.
