For an unexpected closure, Waze gives you the clearest control: while navigating, tap Report, expand the menu, choose Closure, then tap Report. Waze says that report immediately changes your route and avoids the closed road. Google Maps also lets drivers report nearby construction and lane closures, but its documented approach is to use current incident, traffic and community-confirmation data when selecting an alternative; it does not document a permanent “never use this named road” switch.
Both apps can be useful around work zones, but neither can guarantee that every barricade, lane shift or short-notice closure is already in the map. Use the instructions below before moving, report only conditions you actually observe, and obey signs, police and road crews over any app instruction.

Choose the right approach first
Your best setting depends on whether you are already facing a closure, planning around scheduled work, or simply trying to reduce the chance of tolls and congestion.
| Situation | Google Maps | Waze |
|---|---|---|
| You are approaching an unexpected full-road closure | Report the construction or closure through the in-drive incident control, then review the alternate routes Maps offers. | Use Report → expand the menu → Closure → Report. Waze says the report immediately affects your route and avoids the closure. |
| You see construction or a lane closure | Google documents reports for nearby construction and lane closures. Other drivers can confirm reports, and the information is shared across the Maps and Waze communities. | Report the condition you actually see. A lane-only problem is handled differently from a full roadway closure in Waze’s closure data. |
| You want to avoid a particular road forever | The cited Google documentation does not describe a permanent named-road blacklist. Maps chooses among routes using current data. | There is no general “avoid this road forever” control in the cited closure workflow. Report a real incident or shape one trip with a stop. |
| You want to avoid tolls | Use the route options shown for that trip. | Settings → Navigation → Avoid toll roads. This is a toll preference, not a construction-closure switch. |
| A closure is scheduled for future dates | Consumer instructions in the cited material focus on reporting conditions encountered during a trip. | Partners can submit planned restrictions through Map Editor, Partner Hub, a data feed or email. Map Editor/data-feed entries typically appear in one to four minutes; email processing can take up to two business days. |
Google announced its expanded incident reporting on July 31, 2024. Waze’s closure and partner guidance describes the current workflows documented in October 2026, but labels and availability can change with app versions and regional rollouts.

How closure avoidance works
Navigation apps do not see every barricade directly. They combine map geometry, traffic speeds, road-authority information where available and reports from drivers. A report is most useful when it describes the exact direction and segment affected and is submitted close to the incident.
Full-road closures versus lane problems
A full closure means routing software should treat the road segment as unavailable. Waze’s partner documentation says, “When a closure is added to a road, Waze will not route traffic to it.” A lane closure, shoulder restriction or slow merge may leave the road technically passable. Waze treats lane-only delays as Jam Alerts rather than full closure records, so the app may still route through the segment while estimating a delay.

Closures are often directional. Waze notes that one direction can appear closed while the opposite direction remains open. If you see barricades on the other carriageway, the app may legitimately continue to use your direction. Check the signs and lane arrows before assuming the map is wrong.
Rerouting is a moving decision
When a new incident changes the fastest path, the app recalculates. An alternate route may be longer in distance but faster because it avoids a queue. Do not treat a displayed route as permission to pass a barrier, enter a restricted lane or ignore a flagger.
Set up Google Maps to handle construction and closures
Report a closure or construction while navigating
Google’s July 31, 2024 announcement says Maps makes it easier to report nearby construction, lane closures, objects and police presence. The report control is available while you are in navigation; the exact icon and menu placement can vary by app version, vehicle screen and country.
- Start navigation to your destination and wait until the map is showing the active route.
- When traffic stops or you reach a work zone, pull over or remain safely stopped before interacting with the phone. On a compatible vehicle display, use the in-car reporting control instead of handling a handheld phone.
- Open the incident/report control and select the option that matches what you can actually see, such as construction or a lane closure.
- Submit the report. Google says these reports can be shared with the Maps and Waze communities, where other drivers may confirm them.
- After the report is submitted, review the alternative routes shown on the map. Choose only a route that is legal, open and safe for your vehicle.
Report only an incident you have observed. A planned closure that you heard about elsewhere is better verified through the responsible road authority than entered as a live sighting.

What Google Maps can and cannot be set to do
The cited Google material describes incident reporting and community confirmation; it does not document a setting that permanently blocks a named road. Maps therefore reacts to current conditions rather than maintaining a personal blacklist. If a road is repeatedly closed for a long project, the map may avoid it when reliable closure or traffic data is present, but you should not assume that behavior will persist for every trip or direction.
Use route choices without creating a dangerous detour
If Maps still points toward a closure, stop before the last safe decision point. Compare the alternate-route previews and check whether the apparent closure affects your direction. If every displayed route enters the work area, add a safe intermediate destination on an open cross street or another clearly accessible point to shape the route, then remove that stop once you are past the affected area. Do not add a point inside a restricted zone simply to force the app to draw a line around it.
Using Maps in the car
Google’s announcement includes reporting support in Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and vehicles with Google built in. The available report categories and confirmation prompts can differ from the phone interface. Set up navigation before moving, use voice or the vehicle display where supported, and make changes only when traffic conditions allow.
Set up Waze to avoid an active closure
Report the closure from the navigation screen
Waze provides a direct closure workflow. Use it only when you are close to the actual incident, as Waze instructs.
- While Waze is navigating, tap the Report icon.
- Swipe up to expand the full report menu.
- Tap Closure.
- Tap Report to submit the closure.
Waze states that the report immediately affects your route and that Waze will avoid the road closure. The wording does not mean every driver will be diverted instantly: other devices may have stale map data, a different destination or a route that approaches from the open direction.
Automatic recalculation after a sudden closure
For an unexpected blockage, Waze says it recalculates in real time and may use side streets or bypasses. Leave the app running while conditions change so it can process new traffic and hazard information. If the proposed bypass enters a residential street, restricted road or unsafe turning movement, reject it and wait in a legal safe place for another option.

Internet connectivity is required for live changes
Waze’s guidance says live traffic and hazard processing require an active internet connection. If connectivity is lost, dynamic updates pause until the connection returns. Your phone may still show the last route, but that display should not be treated as a current closure feed. If you lose service near a work zone, follow posted detours and road-worker instructions rather than attempting an unverified shortcut.
Report from Android Auto and CarPlay
Waze documents the same Closure → Report flow for native Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The cited Help page says Android Automotive (AAOS) does not currently support this closure-reporting feature. AAOS is the vehicle’s built-in operating system, not the same thing as projecting Waze from a phone through Android Auto; check which system your vehicle is actually using.
Avoid toll roads is a different preference
To prefer routes without tolls, open Settings → Navigation and turn on Avoid toll roads. This can create a longer detour, but it does not specifically block construction, a flood, a crash or a named road. Turn it on only when toll avoidance is your goal; otherwise it can make a closure detour appear unnecessarily long.
Handling planned construction and scheduled restrictions
Most drivers will receive planned-closure data rather than enter it themselves. Waze documents submission channels for partners such as transportation agencies, event organizers and other approved data providers.
Waze submission channels
- Map Editor: an authorized editor can mark the affected road segment and schedule.
- Partner Hub: partners can add planned or real-time closures through the partner interface.
- Data feed: an integrated feed can send closure records for recurring or large-scale operations.
- Email: partners without the other channels can submit the details for processing.
Waze says Map Editor and data-feed entries typically appear in one to four minutes. Email submissions may take up to two business days. Those are processing windows from Waze’s partner documentation, not guarantees that a closure will be approved, visible in every country or reflected by every navigation app.
Information needed for an emailed closure
Waze asks for the street name, intersecting streets, start and end dates and times, and whether the whole road or only one direction is closed. Include the exact segment rather than a broad neighborhood description. A closure that begins at one intersection and ends at another gives routing software a usable boundary.

Choose the correct record type
Mark a complete roadway closure as a closure. If traffic can pass but one lane, shoulder or movement is restricted, use the appropriate jam or traffic-delay information instead of blocking the entire segment. Overstating a lane restriction as a full closure can send legitimate traffic onto unsuitable side streets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Waze or Maps may still send you toward a road that looks closed
The report is new or unconfirmed
A driver may have just encountered the blockage, while the map is still processing the report. Community systems also weigh confirmations and contradictory observations. Slow down, stop before the barrier and wait for a safe reroute rather than following the screen into the closure.
You are seeing a different direction
As noted above, a road can be closed in one direction and open in the other. Median-separated highways, reversible lanes and ramp-specific restrictions make this especially common. Read the sign for your lane, not the sign across the median.
The road is restricted, not completely closed
Construction may leave one lane open, permit local access or apply only during certain hours. A routing engine can therefore consider the segment legal while estimating a delay. Follow temporary signals and lane-control signs even when the app shows a route through the work zone.
Your app has stale or incomplete data
Long-running projects can change phases, and a short-notice police or contractor closure may not yet be in the map. App labels, rollout status and map data change. For major journeys, check the local road authority’s current notice as well as the navigation app.
Connectivity or positioning is poor
Waze explicitly pauses live traffic and hazard processing without an active internet connection. Tunnels, rural areas and overloaded cellular networks can delay updates. A weak GPS position can also make the app think you are on a parallel frontage road or ramp. Wait for a stable position before accepting a new turn.
What to do when the suggested detour is wrong
- Prioritize physical controls. Follow a barricade, flagger, police officer, temporary signal or signed detour over either app.
- Stop legally before editing the route. Use a parking area, rest area or other safe stopping place; never type while moving.
- Check the direction and segment. Confirm whether the closure begins before your approach and whether the opposite carriageway or a frontage road is open.
- Review all displayed alternatives. Compare estimated time, road class, turn complexity and vehicle restrictions, not just mileage.
- Shape the trip cautiously. In Maps, a safe intermediate destination on an open road can keep the route away from a work zone. In Waze, let the closure report and automatic recalculation update the route; do not create a destination inside the blocked area.
- Recheck after service returns. If Waze lost connectivity, wait for live data to resume before relying on a new route.
- Report only what you verified. A precise, nearby report is more useful than a guess based on a social-media post or a closure in the opposite direction.
Google Maps and Waze: practical differences
| Capability | Google Maps | Waze |
|---|---|---|
| Live user report | Reports nearby construction and lane closures through the incident control; other drivers can confirm reports. | Dedicated Closure report; Waze says the submitting driver’s route is immediately changed to avoid it. |
| Automatic response | Uses current incident and traffic information to offer route alternatives. | Automatically recalculates after sudden closures and may use side streets or bypasses. |
| Permanent road block | No permanent named-road blacklist is documented in the cited material. | The cited workflow is incident-based, not a permanent blacklist. |
| Planned closure intake | No consumer schedule-entry workflow is described in the cited material. | Partners can use Map Editor, Partner Hub, data feed or email. |
| Processing timing | Not stated in the cited material. | Map Editor/data feed: typically one to four minutes; email: up to two business days. |
| Lane-only work | Report lane closures as incidents. | Handled as Jam Alerts rather than full closure records. |
| In-car reporting | Announcement includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and cars with Google built in. | Closure reporting documented for Android Auto and CarPlay; not currently supported on AAOS in the cited Help page. |
| Internet qualification | Live behavior depends on current map and incident information; the cited announcement does not specify an outage mode. | Active internet is required for live traffic and hazard processing; updates pause when connectivity is lost. |
Before-you-drive checklist for construction-heavy routes
- Update the navigation app and confirm the destination before pulling away.
- Look for an official road-authority notice when the trip crosses a known project, event zone or seasonal closure.
- Allow extra time; no cited source provides a reliable percentage for minutes or miles saved by either app.
- Decide whether toll avoidance is actually needed before enabling Waze’s Avoid toll roads preference.
- Know where you can safely stop if the route changes.
- Keep the phone mounted and use the vehicle display or voice controls where available.
Key takeaways for drivers
Use Waze’s Closure report when you are at an actual full-road blockage and need the app to reroute that trip. Use Google Maps’ incident control to report construction or lane closures and then select a safe alternative from the routes it presents. Neither app should be treated as a substitute for signs, road crews or current local authority notices. Direction-specific restrictions, lane-only delays, unconfirmed reports and lost connectivity explain many apparent mistakes, so verify the physical road before following any suggested path.
