How to hang outdoor Christmas lights securely
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises fastening outdoor light strings to trees, house walls or other firm supports to protect them from wind damage. It names hooks and insulated staples as options. Choose a fastening method that suits both the support and the light string, and follow the product instructions.

- If using staples, choose insulated fasteners and position them so they do not pierce or crush the wiring. CPSC advises against nails or tacks for this job.
- Do not force a fastener into a surface or use one that could damage the building, tree or decoration. If the surface is unsuitable, choose another attachment method.
These recommendations reflect CPSC guidance in its 2002 holiday-decorating advice and its holiday decoration safety brochure. Once installed, check the setup after strong wind or severe weather as a practical precaution.
How to keep larger decorations from blowing away
Do not assume the light-string fastening advice provides a complete anchoring plan for inflatables or other large freestanding decorations. Stake count, tie-down arrangement and wind limits depend on the product and installation; the sources cited here do not establish universal specifications.

- Place the decoration where the maker permits, taking local weather conditions into account.

Check the electrical setup as well as the attachments
A firmly attached display can still be unsafe if its lights or power setup are unsuitable for outdoor use. CPSC’s 2018 holiday safety guidance recommends checking outdoor-use certification, inspecting light strings and extension cords, and using GFCI-protected power.
- Lights: Use only strings labeled or certified for outdoor use. Inspect them before installation and discard damaged sets.
- Extension cords: Use a cord rated for its intended use, in good condition, and appropriate for outdoor use. CPSC’s extension-cord guidance identifies a jacketed cord as an observable characteristic of outdoor cords. Follow the cord maker’s instructions.
- Power: Connect outdoor electric lights and decorations to a GFCI-protected receptacle, or use a portable outdoor GFCI where appropriate. The right setup depends on the specific product and outlet.
- Connections: Read the light maker’s instructions for how many strands may be connected. NFPA notes that some light strings are for indoor or outdoor use, but not both, and advises following manufacturers’ instructions in its Winter Holiday Safety sheet.
- When unattended: Turn lights off when leaving home or going to bed, as CPSC advises in its holiday decoration safety brochure.
Choosing attachment hardware for your surface
