Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can usually stop a window draft without replacing the window, but the correct fix depends on where air enters. Use weatherstripping at a moving sash, caulk at a stationary crack, backer rod or low-expansion foam behind loose trim, and shrink-to-fit film when you need a temporary winter barrier. Find the leak first; sealing the wrong joint can stop the window from opening or leave the real gap untouched.
Find the leak before choosing a material
Close and latch the window before testing it. Look for a visibly loose or missing seal, daylight, dust, pests, outside odors, peeling paint, or rattling. ENERGY STAR identifies these as common signs of air leakage around a closed window.

Use the paper test at the sash
- Place a sheet of paper across the meeting surface of the closed sash.
- Close and latch the window over the paper.
- Try to pull the paper out. If it moves freely, the sash may not be pressing firmly against its weatherstripping.
A tighter or thicker weatherstrip may correct that condition, but the replacement must still allow the sash to close and latch normally.

Trace moving air with smoke
With the window closed, hold a lit incense stick near the sash edges, meeting rail, and frame seams. Watch whether smoke is pushed or pulled at one location. Keep the smoke source away from curtains and other combustible materials, and follow normal household fire-safety practices; the test itself does not replace a professional air-leakage measurement.

A draft at the meeting rail or sash edge generally points to an operable-joint problem. Air at stationary casing, trim, or the wall points to a fixed-joint or rough-opening gap. Do not caulk across a joint that must move for the window to open.
Choose the repair by leak location
| Where air enters | Primary repair | Must the window remain operable? | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Between a moving sash and its stop or meeting rail | Window weatherstripping | Yes | Profile and thickness must match the gap and window design. |
| Crack between stationary frame, casing, or trim | Caulk intended for the materials and location | Yes, because the sash is not being bridged | Do not use caulk on a movable sash joint. |
| Gap behind removable trim or between jamb and rough opening | Backer rod plus caulk, or low-expansion window-and-door foam | Yes | Do not force backer rod hard enough to bend the frame. |
| Across the entire opening for a winter season | Shrink-to-fit interior plastic film kit | No while installed | Film and tape can block the window and mini-blinds. |
Seal a drafty movable sash with weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is designed for components that move, including operable windows. Retail products include foam tape, V-strip, and other profiles. No single profile or thickness suits every sash; measure the gap and follow the window and product instructions.
Installation sequence
- Open the sash and inspect the existing weatherstrip, stops, corners, and latch side. Remove only material that is loose, missing, or damaged.
- Clean the bonding surface and let it dry completely. Dirt, dust, and moisture can keep adhesive-backed products from seating.
- Measure the gap and select a weatherstrip that compresses when the window closes without preventing the latch from engaging.
- Apply the strip continuously along the intended contact surface, cutting neat joints at corners according to the product directions.
- Close, latch, and reopen the sash several times. Confirm that it moves freely, seals evenly, and does not require abnormal force.
If the sash still rattles or the paper test remains loose, the weatherstrip may be too thin, incorrectly positioned, or incompatible with the window design. A warped sash, damaged stop, or failed latch may require a more involved repair rather than additional adhesive tape.
Caulk cracks at fixed frames and trim
Caulk belongs at joints between stationary components: for example, a crack where casing meets the wall or where a fixed frame meets trim. The South Carolina Energy Office and the U.S. Department of Energy use the same basic distinction: caulk stationary components; weatherstrip components that move.

Prepare and apply the joint
- Remove loose caulk, peeling paint, dust, and debris without widening a sound joint unnecessarily.
- Check that the surfaces are dry and structurally sound.
- Choose a sealant labeled for the materials and exposure at that location, and use a caulk gun if the product requires one.
- Apply a continuous bead. Tool it smoothly so it contacts both sides of the crack without covering a sash or drainage path.
- Allow the sealant to cure for the time on its label before exposing it to water or operating nearby components.
ENERGY STAR describes caulk as suitable for gaps about one-quarter inch or less. A wider opening needs a compatible filler, such as backer rod, before the caulk surface is applied. Never use a bead of caulk to glue a moving sash shut.
Repair air leaks behind removable trim
Air between the rough opening and jamb is a different problem from a sash leak. If casing can be removed and replaced without damage, sealing behind it may address a concealed path that surface caulk cannot reach.
For moderate gaps
- Remove trim carefully and inspect the gap between the jamb and rough opening.
- For a suitable wide joint, press foam backer rod into the opening to provide a backing surface.
- Apply caulk over the backer rod, or use low-expansion spray foam specifically made for windows and doors when the product instructions permit it.
- Let the sealant or foam cure fully, trim excess only as directed, and reinstall the casing without forcing the frame out of square.
Backer rod should fill the gap without being driven so deeply or tightly that it deflects the jamb. A bent frame can change sash fit, latch alignment, and weatherstrip contact. ENERGY STAR rates trim sealing as moderate to difficult, particularly when access, finish work, or hidden damage is involved.
Older homes and painted trim
Disturbing painted trim in a home built before 1978 can create lead-paint hazards. Use appropriate lead-safe precautions and consider a qualified professional when trim is complicated, paint is deteriorating, or removal could damage the window or surrounding finishes.

Install temporary shrink-to-fit window film
A shrink-to-fit plastic film kit is a quick, removable seasonal measure. ENERGY STAR describes kits containing clear film and double-sided or magnetic tape. The film creates an additional air layer and can reduce drafts, but it covers the opening while installed.
Step-by-step installation
- Read the kit directions and measure the window. Cut the film with a few inches of extra material on every side so it can attach securely.
- Clean and dry the frame where the tape will adhere. A dirty or damp surface can cause the perimeter to release.
- Apply the supplied tape or magnetic attachment system around the frame as directed.
- Press the film onto the attachment, keeping it reasonably smooth rather than pulling it so tightly that the tape peels.
- Use a hair dryer to shrink and tighten the film according to the package instructions. Keep the dryer moving and avoid overheating the film or nearby finishes.
- At the end of winter, remove the film and tape together as directed by the kit instructions.
Because the film spans the opening, it can prevent the window from operating and may interfere with mini-blinds. It is not a repair for a rotten frame, broken hardware, or a failed insulated-glass seal. Use it when a temporary barrier is acceptable and the underlying window remains serviceable.
Consider a storm window when a temporary film is not enough
ENERGY STAR-certified low-e storm windows attach to an existing primary window on the inside or outside. They can be useful when full replacement is difficult, including some historic-preservation situations, but the original window should be in good condition and operate properly.

Check suitability before buying
- Climate: In certain hot climates, a low-e storm window can trap heat. Confirm that the product is appropriate for the climate zone.
- Frame material: Thermal breaks are important when a storm window is installed over a metal-framed primary window.
- Existing glass and appearance: Account for the current glazing, sightlines, and the look of an interior or exterior attachment.
- Access and ventilation: Make sure the assembly can be cleaned and that required ventilation is not blocked.
- Emergency escape and codes: Check egress dimensions and local building requirements before installing a unit that could obstruct an escape opening.
What the published savings estimates mean
| Scenario | ENERGY STAR estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Certified low-e storm windows over single-pane clear glass with no existing storm windows | About $350 per year, roughly 10% of annual heating and cooling bills | National-average estimate shown on the ENERGY STAR page accessed in 2026; actual results vary with climate, home characteristics, and utility rates. The page also estimates about a three-year payback on incremental cost. |
| Replacing existing clear-glass storm windows over single-pane windows with certified low-e storm windows | About $50 per year, roughly 2% additional annual heating and cooling savings | National-average estimate shown on the ENERGY STAR page accessed in 2026; it is not a guarantee for an individual home. |
ENERGY STAR also uses the phrase “up to a 10% savings on your annual energy bills” for sealing air leaks and adding insulation around a home generally. That figure is not a window-only promise and should not be used to predict the result of one sealing project. Its storm-window specification displays an effective date of September 5, 2018, so verify current certification and climate-zone labeling before purchase.

Watch humidity and condensation after sealing
Stopping drafts changes how air and moisture move. EPA explains that a tighter, more energy-efficient house can hold more indoor moisture. Moisture condenses on window glass because the glass is cold; storm windows and caulking can keep interior glass warmer, but they do not remove the moisture source.
- Watch for recurring condensation on the glass, frame, or nearby trim after sealing.
- Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust ventilation when cooking, bathing, or showering.
- Reduce excess indoor humidity if condensation persists, rather than repeatedly adding sealant.
- Investigate staining, soft wood, or mold promptly; those conditions may indicate a longer-standing moisture problem.
EPA’s moisture guidance was updated February 18, 2026. The practical test is the condition of your room and window, not a promise that every sealed window will remain condensation-free.
Use a decision workflow for a whole house
- Map each leak: Mark sash edges, fixed trim joints, and behind-trim locations separately while the window is closed and latched.
- Preserve movement: Reserve weatherstripping for joints that move and verify operation after every adjustment.
- Seal fixed paths: Caulk narrow stationary cracks; use backer rod and caulk or low-expansion foam for appropriate larger gaps.
- Choose a seasonal barrier only when appropriate: Use film when temporary coverage is acceptable, or evaluate storm windows when the primary window is serviceable and code, climate, and egress conditions permit.
- Recheck: Repeat the paper and smoke checks, then inspect for condensation and for any latch, blind, or ventilation problem created by the work.
For general air-sealing work, the U.S. Department of Energy says: “Caulking and weatherstripping are two simple and effective air-sealing techniques that offer quick returns on investment—often paying for themselves in one year or less.” That is general guidance, not a guarantee for a particular window or house.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Caulking the sash shut
Symptom: The window no longer opens, or the seal tears when it moves. Correction: Remove caulk from the operable joint and use a correctly sized weatherstrip instead.

Using weatherstrip on a stationary crack
Symptom: The strip peels, leaves a visible gap, or does not stop air at the casing. Correction: Clean the fixed joint and apply a compatible caulk; use backer rod first if the opening is too wide for a simple bead.
Overpacking backer rod or foam
Symptom: The sash rubs, latch alignment changes, or the frame appears bowed. Correction: Remove excess material and reseal without deflecting the jamb. Low-expansion foam made for windows and doors is less likely to create damaging pressure than general expanding foam, but its label still controls use.
Applying film to a dirty frame
Symptom: Tape releases at corners or the film sags. Correction: Remove the failed application, clean and dry the frame, and reinstall with the specified margin and attachment method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIgnoring the moisture source
Symptom: Condensation or damp trim increases after drafts are sealed. Correction: Improve kitchen and bathroom exhaust ventilation and reduce indoor humidity while checking for hidden water intrusion.
Know when a home energy assessment is worthwhile
If drafts persist after the visible window joints are sealed, or several rooms feel leaky, do not assume the windows are the largest source. The Department of Energy notes that window leaks are not necessarily the biggest air leaks in a house and recommends an energy auditor using a blower door to identify major leakage paths. A whole-house assessment can prevent spending time on windows while larger leaks remain at doors, attic penetrations, ductwork, or other envelope joints.
U.S. federal guidance and ENERGY STAR material provide general methods; local codes, product availability, rebate rules, and lead-safety requirements can differ and change. The storm-window figures are conditional national averages, not a measured prediction for your home.
