Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use two Alexa Routines: one scheduled to turn the smart plug on and a second scheduled to turn it off. This works for an Amazon Smart Plug and other compatible plugs already connected to Alexa.
Before you start
- Plug the smart plug into a powered outlet and complete its setup.
- Confirm it appears in the Alexa app under Devices.
- Give it a short, unique name such as Desk Lamp Plug or Coffee Maker Plug.
- Use the Alexa app to turn it on and off manually before creating a schedule.
- Check that Alexa has the correct household location and time zone.
The plug must remain powered and reachable through its network connection when the Routine is due to run. An Echo speaker does not need to be beside the plug; the important requirement is that the device is connected to Alexa. Alexa supports smart-home actions through Routines, including compatible connected plugs (Amazon Alexa device documentation).

- Select the time when the plug should turn on.
- Choose Every day or select specific days.
- Tap Add an action.
- Choose Smart Home, then select the plug.
- Set its power state to On.

Two Routines are clearer than one Routine containing a long wait. Each clock time has its own trigger, repeat days, and power action, making the schedule easier to test and troubleshoot.

Choose the correct repeat days
For a weekday schedule, select the same intended days in both Routines. For example, select Monday through Friday for both the on and off actions. A common mistake is setting the on Routine for every day but limiting the off Routine to weekdays.
Pay particular attention to overnight schedules. If the plug turns on at 10:00 PM Sunday and turns off at 6:00 AM Monday, those actions occur on different calendar days. Select the actual date pattern rather than blindly choosing the same weekday buttons in both Routines.

Use sunrise or sunset instead of a fixed time
Sunrise and sunset triggers can be useful for porch lights, lamps, and seasonal decorations because daylight changes throughout the year. If your Alexa app offers these options, choose the relevant sunrise or sunset event instead of a fixed clock time. Some interfaces may also offer an offset, such as several minutes before or after the event.

Edit, disable, or delete the schedule
Open More → Routines and tap the Routine you want to manage. You can change its time, repeat days, device, or power action. Disable a Routine when you want to keep its settings but pause it. Delete it when you no longer need it. Amazon provides Routine management controls in the Alexa app (About Amazon: Echo and Alexa setup).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSchedule versus countdown timer
A recurring schedule such as “turn on every weekday at 7:00 AM and off at 6:00 PM” is different from “turn on now and off two hours later.” The first uses two time-triggered Routines. The second requires a supported wait action, a manufacturer-app timer, or another home-automation design. A long wait can be harder to edit and may be affected by platform limitations, so two scheduled Routines are usually the more dependable choice for fixed daily times.

Troubleshooting
The plug does not appear under Smart Home
- Confirm it appears under Devices in Alexa.
- Complete the manufacturer’s setup process again if necessary.
- Run device discovery from the Alexa app or ask Alexa to discover devices.
- Confirm the plug is linked to the same Amazon household.
- Rename it if it is difficult to identify among other devices.
Alexa can add connected devices through the app or discover compatible devices (About Amazon: connect smart-home devices to Alexa).
The Routine runs but the plug does not change state
- Test the plug manually.
- Check whether Alexa shows it as offline.
- Confirm the Routine targets the intended individual plug.
- Look for another Alexa Routine or manufacturer-app schedule that changes the state immediately afterward.
- Power-cycle the plug only if doing so is safe for the connected appliance.
- Recreate the Routine if its device action no longer displays correctly.
It turns on but does not turn off
- Confirm that a separate off Routine exists.
- Check its selected repeat days.
- Verify the AM/PM setting.
- Check for a midnight date rollover.
- Confirm the action is set to Power Off.
- Make sure the plug was not renamed after the Routine was created.
It runs at the wrong time
- Check Alexa’s household location and time zone.
- Recheck the selected time and AM/PM.
- Consider daylight-saving changes.
- For sunrise or sunset, verify the configured location and any offset.
It works once but not repeatedly
- Confirm the Routine is enabled.
- Confirm multiple weekdays are selected if appropriate.
- Check that you created a recurring schedule rather than a one-time date event.
- Make sure the plug remains online.
- Test again with a time a few minutes in the future.
Safety and appliance compatibility
A smart plug only switches electrical power. It does not make an appliance safe for unattended operation, and it cannot press an appliance’s electronic start button.
Use particular caution with space heaters, hot plates, irons, hair-styling tools, cooking equipment, pumps, and any appliance whose manufacturer prohibits unattended operation. For a coffee maker or similar device, the appliance must have a suitable physical power switch or reliably resume operation when power is restored.
Also distinguish between Alexa issuing the scheduled command and the appliance actually starting. The plug must have power and connectivity, while the appliance must safely respond to restored power. A schedule cannot overcome a power, network, device, or cloud-service outage.
