Yes, a portable generator can run a refrigerator during an outage—but only when its continuous and starting capacity meet the refrigerator’s requirements and the equipment is operated outdoors with strict carbon-monoxide and electrical precautions. Put the generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the home, aim exhaust away from doors, windows and vents, and connect the refrigerator directly to the generator or through a properly rated outdoor extension cord.
Never run the generator inside a house, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, porch or carport, and never plug it into a household wall outlet. The instructions below follow current guidance from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).

Start with the two checks that determine whether this will work
Refrigerators are a practical emergency load because they cycle rather than draw their full load continuously. That does not make every generator suitable. You must verify both the refrigerator’s electrical demand and the generator’s available output.
Check the refrigerator’s nameplate and manual
Look for the data plate on the refrigerator cabinet, near the door frame, or in the owner’s manual. Record the stated voltage, running amperage or wattage, and any starting or locked-rotor information. If the manual gives a starting requirement, use that figure. If it does not, do not substitute a generic internet estimate: official safety sources reviewed for this guide do not publish one universal refrigerator startup-watt figure.

Older refrigerators, commercial-style units, models with ice makers, and units with additional heaters or pumps can have different requirements. The nameplate and the appliance manual are the authoritative references for your particular model.
Check the generator’s continuous and starting ratings
Portable generators normally state a continuous (running) output and a higher starting or surge output. Compare the refrigerator’s running requirement with the continuous rating, then compare its starting requirement with the generator’s starting rating. The refrigerator must fit both tests; passing only the running-watt test is not enough.
Account for every other appliance that will be connected at the same time. A refrigerator that starts successfully by itself may fail when a freezer, pump, heater, lighting circuit or other load is already using the generator’s capacity. Use the generator and appliance manuals together rather than relying on a label from a different model.

|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator running demand | Refrigerator nameplate or owner’s manual | The generator’s continuous rating is at least this demand, with capacity left for any other connected loads. |
| Refrigerator starting demand | Appliance manual, technical data or manufacturer specification | The generator’s starting rating meets the refrigerator’s startup requirement without overloading. |
| Generator output and outlets | Generator nameplate and manual | The outlet type, voltage and current rating are compatible with the refrigerator plug or approved cord. |
| Extension-cord capacity | Cord label and packaging | The cord is heavy-duty, outdoor-rated and rated at least for the total connected load. |
If a required value is missing or unclear, ask the refrigerator or generator manufacturer, or have a qualified electrician evaluate the setup. Do not “test” an uncertain combination by repeatedly resetting an overloaded generator.
Carbon-monoxide safety comes before electrical capacity
Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas. CPSC states that “Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can kill within minutes.” CPSC reported about 100 U.S. consumer deaths per year from portable-generator CO poisoning in 2025. A refrigerator that runs perfectly is not a safe outcome if the generator is positioned where exhaust can enter the home.
Place the generator outdoors and 20 feet away
- Set the generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from the home.
- Position the exhaust so it points away from doors, windows and vents.
- Keep the unit where drifting exhaust cannot be drawn into the building by an open window, ventilation intake or other opening.
- Maintain the clearances and operating position specified by the generator manual.
The 20-foot distance and exhaust direction are repeated in current CPSC guidance. Measure from the generator to the home rather than estimating from the end of the extension cord.
Locations that are never acceptable
Never operate a portable generator inside a house, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed, porch or carport. Open doors or windows do not make one of these locations safe. CPSC’s generator guide puts it plainly: “NEVER use portable generators indoors or in garages, basements, or sheds.” The same prohibition applies to partially enclosed spaces where exhaust can accumulate.

Use CO alarms, but do not treat them as permission
Keep working, battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarms inside the home. Test them according to their instructions and keep them operational during the outage. An alarm can warn occupants of a dangerous condition; it cannot make indoor generator use safe and cannot replace outdoor placement.
Choose a connection that does not create a shock or fire hazard
Preferred method: plug the refrigerator directly into the generator
When the generator is close enough for a safe cord run, connect the refrigerator’s plug directly to a compatible generator receptacle. Keep the refrigerator plug and generator outlet dry, and use only the outlet configuration and voltage specified by the manuals. Do not remove the grounding pin or modify either plug.
Use the right extension cord when direct connection is impractical
Select a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated, three-prong extension cord. Its ampacity must meet or exceed the total connected load, not merely the refrigerator’s normal running demand. FEMA’s guidance is: “Always connect the generator to appliances with heavy-duty extension cords.”
- Read the cord’s rating and compare it with the combined load of everything on that cord.
- Inspect the jacket, plug and receptacle before each use. Do not use a cord with cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors, heat damage or loose ends.
- Keep the grounding pin intact; never use a two-prong adapter to defeat grounding.
- Route the cord where vehicles, doors and foot traffic cannot crush or sever it, while preserving the generator’s outdoor separation.
- Keep connections out of standing water and follow the generator manual’s instructions for wet-weather operation.
If you cannot verify the cord’s outdoor rating or load capacity, replace it with one whose label clearly states both. A household indoor cord is not an acceptable substitute.

Never backfeed the house through a wall outlet
Do not connect the generator to a household receptacle with a male-to-male cord or any improvised cable. This practice, commonly called backfeeding, can energize utility lines and expose line workers to lethal voltage. It can also bypass normal household circuit protection and create a fire or shock hazard.
CPSC’s safety alert says: “NEVER try to power the house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet.” Turning off a few breakers does not make an improvised backfeed connection safe.
Use a transfer switch for selected house circuits
If you need the refrigerator to remain connected to a designated household circuit, have a qualified electrician install a code-compliant transfer switch and any required inlet, overcurrent protection and grounding equipment. The transfer switch must be selected and installed for the specific generator and electrical service. It is not a do-it-yourself workaround for a missing outlet.

1. Prepare before starting
- Read the generator manual and the refrigerator manual. Confirm the generator’s continuous and starting ratings, outlet compatibility and any required grounding or neutral instructions.
- Inspect the generator, fuel system, plug and cord. Remove damaged equipment from service.
- Move the generator to its outdoor operating position, at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from openings.
- Make sure interior CO alarms are working and that everyone in the home knows the generator’s location and the evacuation plan if an alarm sounds.
- Disconnect unnecessary loads so the refrigerator will not have to start while the generator is heavily loaded.
2. Connect without energizing the refrigerator yet
With the generator off, plug the refrigerator directly into the generator or into the approved heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cord. Keep the refrigerator’s plug connection accessible for inspection, and avoid daisy-chaining cords or adding unapproved splitters.
3. Start the generator according to its manual
Follow the exact starting procedure for the model, including fuel-valve, choke, battery or electric-start instructions. Let the generator stabilize as directed before applying the refrigerator load. Do not defeat a circuit breaker, overload indicator or CO-shutoff feature.
4. Apply the refrigerator load and observe it
Switch on or connect the refrigerator as directed by its manual. Listen and watch for normal startup. A brief startup sound is not, by itself, evidence of a problem; repeated failed starts, a tripped generator breaker, flickering output, a burning smell or unusual heat means the load should be disconnected and the generator shut down according to the manual.
Do not add other appliances until the refrigerator has started and the generator remains stable. If the generator cannot start the refrigerator while otherwise unloaded, stop and recheck the nameplate, starting rating, cord and outlet compatibility instead of cycling the unit repeatedly.

Follow the generator manual for refueling. Shut the unit down and let it cool before adding fuel. Hot engine parts can ignite spilled fuel. Store fuel outside living areas and follow local storage rules and the fuel container’s instructions.
6. Shut down in the prescribed order
When the outage ends or fuel is low, remove the refrigerator load as instructed by the generator manual, then shut down the generator. Allow it to cool before moving, covering or storing it. Disconnect and inspect the cord after the equipment is off and dry.

Rain, snow and storage require their own precautions
Portable generators must remain dry, but enclosing one in a shed, porch, garage or makeshift structure is not an acceptable solution because those spaces can trap exhaust. Follow the generator manufacturer’s instructions for rain and snow, and use only a weather protection method the manual permits while preserving the required ventilation and 20-foot placement.
Keep fuel containers outside living areas, away from ignition sources and according to applicable fire-safety requirements. Never refuel while the generator is running or hot. Before storing the generator, follow the manual’s fuel, battery and maintenance instructions so it is ready for the next outage.

Capacity is only one part of the decision. Compare the following characteristics before buying or borrowing a generator, cord or alarm.
| Equipment or feature | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Generator capacity | What are the continuous and starting ratings, and do they exceed the refrigerator’s documented requirements with other loads included? | The refrigerator needs enough output both to start and to keep running. |
| CO protection | Does the generator have a certified CO shut-off or other documented CO-safety feature, and does the manual explain its limits? | Automatic protection is an additional safeguard, not a substitute for outdoor placement and alarms. |
| Outlet and plug compatibility | Do the generator receptacle, refrigerator plug and cord match the required voltage, configuration and current rating? | Incompatible connections can cause overheating, shock or equipment damage. |
| Extension cord | Is it heavy-duty, three-prong, outdoor-rated and rated for the total connected load? | A cord that is too light or damaged can overheat under load. |
| Noise and runtime | Will the operating noise and fuel runtime suit the location and expected outage? | These affect practical operation, but neither changes the CO-distance rule. |
| Transfer-switch installation | Will selected house circuits be powered through a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician? | A transfer switch prevents an unsafe improvised connection to house wiring. |
| CO alarms | Are working battery-powered or battery-backup alarms installed inside the home? | They provide an interior warning if CO reaches occupied areas. |
Troubleshooting common failure modes
The refrigerator will not start
- Disconnect other generator loads and try once more after confirming the generator has stabilized.
- Recheck the refrigerator’s documented starting requirement against the generator’s starting rating.
- Inspect the cord, plug and generator receptacle for damage, looseness or an incompatible configuration.
- If the generator breaker trips or the problem persists, disconnect the refrigerator and consult the appliance or generator manufacturer. Do not bypass the breaker.
The generator overloads after another appliance is added
Remove the additional appliance and recalculate the connected load using the nameplates and manuals. A refrigerator’s startup demand can coincide with another appliance’s demand, even when each appears acceptable alone. Operate only the loads that fit within the generator’s continuous and starting ratings.
A CO alarm sounds or anyone feels ill
Leave the building immediately and move to fresh air. Do not re-enter to search for the source. Call emergency services from outside and tell responders that a generator may be involved. Do not resume operation until the generator has been evaluated and the cause of the alarm is understood.
The cord or plug becomes hot, smells of burning or shows damage
Disconnect the load and shut down the generator using its normal procedure if it is safe to do so. Do not reuse the cord. Replace damaged equipment with a properly rated outdoor cord or have a qualified electrician inspect the connection.
Rain or snow begins
Follow the generator manual’s weather instructions. Keep the unit dry without moving it into any enclosed or partially enclosed location. If you cannot maintain the manufacturer’s required protection and ventilation, shut it down safely.
