How to Safeguard Water Features in Winter: 7 Practical Steps

Winterize water features according to their inhabitants, construction, local freezing conditions and equipment ratings. These seven steps cover ponds, pumps, plants and decorative fountains.

Winter care depends on what kind of water feature you have. A fish or wildlife pond needs a plan for plants, water quality and ice; a decorative fountain that will be shut down needs to be drained or protected from water freezing in vulnerable parts. Before temperatures fall, check local conditions and the cold-weather instructions for your exact pump and filter.

1. Clear leaves and dying plant growth

Remove fallen leaves, dead foliage and other debris before they break down in the water. Decaying material adds organic matter to a pond over winter. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends prompt removal of dead plant material and autumn netting to catch falling leaves; Oase also advises regular debris removal.

Use netting only if it can be secured without creating a hazard for wildlife, and remove accumulated leaves before they become a heavy, wet layer.

2. Prepare plants according to species and climate

Aquatic plants do not all tolerate winter in the same way. Identify each plant and check guidance for your local climate rather than treating every pond plant alike.

K&H Pond Heater, Thermo-Pond 3.0 Deicer, Safety Listed, 100W, Black
  • LOW WATTAGE: The world's most successful and efficient low-wattage pond de-icer
  • HOLE IN ICE: Uses only 100 Watts and maintains a 12" hole in backyard pond ice for just pennies a day (it will not keep other open areas in your pond)
  • FLOATING: Floats on top of the water and is completely safe when used with a pond liner or plastic pond
  • FISH FRIENDLY: Assists the escape of toxic gases all winter long to help maintain a toxic-free environment for fish living under the ice
  • TESTED: Tested in northern Wisconsin at sub-zero temperatures, keeping a 12" hole in the ice of your backyard pond (pond should be at least 18" deep)

Hardy plants

Virginia Cooperative Extension says certain hardy plants can overwinter in at least 20 inches of water, moved to a deeper part of the pond. That depth is guidance for the plants and conditions addressed by the extension publication, not a universal rule for every species or region.

Cold-sensitive plants

Some plants need a protected winter location. The same Virginia Cooperative Extension guidance gives examples of cold-sensitive plants that require protected conditions above 50°F. Remove dead or decaying foliage and stop fertilizing as plants enter dormancy; confirm the right treatment for the species you have.

3. Decide whether the pump and filter should run

There is no safe universal rule to leave every pond pump running—or to remove every pump. Check the manual for the exact pump, filter and other equipment, including its stated operating temperature and winter-storage procedure. Oase’s guidance distinguishes between equipment designed for frost exposure and equipment that should be removed and stored frost-free; its examples apply to the products it describes, not automatically to other brands or models.

  • If the manual permits cold-weather operation, follow its requirements for installation, water flow and temperature.
  • If the equipment is not rated for the expected conditions, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing, cleaning and storing it.
  • Some equipment-storage instructions call for keeping components in a bucket of water to keep seals moist. Do this only if the instructions for your model say to.

4. Protect plumbing and equipment from freezing

Water left in pipes or equipment can freeze and cause damage, including if power is interrupted while a system is running. Before shutdown, follow the model-specific instructions for draining or protecting plumbing and relieving pressure in relevant components. Do not assume that switching off the pump is enough: the correct procedure depends on the system’s layout and equipment.

  • Efficient De-icing: Pond heater has a simple design with no complex installation required. Just place pond heater in the desired location in the pond and plug it in to the power source. With multiple power options (500W, 1000W, 1500W), it is suitable for ponds of almost any size. Note: Never turn on the power before fully submerging the pond heater in water.
  • Animal Friendly Winter Care: The pond deicer is designed for various ornamental fish ponds, livestock water trough stock tanks, etc. Small pond heater de-icer is safe, reliable, and energy efficient, providing a comfortable living environment for fish and koi in winter, as well as warm water for horses, cows, chickens, ducks, and other animals. It is an important tool for winter animal protection

5. Choose an ice plan for ponds that may freeze solid

If fish or wildlife live in a pond that could freeze solid, plan how to maintain a suitable opening in the ice. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists several options, including a cold-rated pump, pond heater or floating de-icer, aeration, passive solar approaches, and hand removal. The sources do not rank these methods for every pond, so choose in light of pond size and depth, expected temperatures, inhabitants, equipment ratings and the chance of a power interruption.

Approach What to consider
Run a pump Use only if the exact pump and system are rated for expected winter conditions; consider what happens if power fails.
Heater or floating de-icer Confirm the device is intended for the pond and conditions, and follow its installation and safety instructions.
Aeration Use a suitable air bubbler or similar setup; placement and system requirements matter.
Passive solar option May be an option depending on site and pond conditions; the cited guidance does not establish a universal performance level.
Hand removal Remove ice gently. Oase warns that forcefully cracking or breaking ice can send shock waves through the water and threaten fish.

Some ice can form, but Virginia Cooperative Extension advises against allowing a pond to freeze solid. Do not try to clear ice by striking it.

6. Adjust fish care and monitor the pond

Use water temperature—not a single day’s air temperature—as a seasonal cue for fish care. Oase’s manufacturer guidance gives 60°F, 50°F and 40°F as markers in its pond-care recommendations, and advises stopping feeding below 50°F. Treat those as Oase guidance, not a universal feeding schedule; follow advice appropriate to your fish and pond.

Check the pond through winter and maintain its water level, as Virginia Cooperative Extension advises. Watch for changes in the water, equipment interruptions or ice conditions that could affect inhabitants, and respond according to your system’s instructions.

7. Protect decorative fountains and concrete features

A decorative fountain that does not support fish or aquatic plants has different winter priorities from a living pond. If it will be shut down, prevent water from collecting and freezing in bowls, shells, pipes and other vulnerable components. Oregon State University Extension advises storing concrete garden features indoors where practical and preventing exposed water from freezing in them.

If the fountain or removable parts can be moved indoors, that may be practical for a portable feature. If it must stay outside, drain it and protect it in a way suited to its material and design. Covering or inverting a component is appropriate only when its construction allows it; the available guidance does not establish one procedure for every fountain material or model.
