If your TCL TV has a black screen, start with a non-destructive power cycle—not a factory reset. Unplug the TV for at least 60 seconds, hold its physical Power button for about 10–15 seconds if available, reconnect it directly to a working wall outlet, and press Home. If the picture remains blank, the correct factory-reset method depends on whether the TV uses Roku TV, Google TV, Fire TV, or older Android TV software. A reset may fix a temporary software or configuration problem, but it cannot repair a failed backlight, panel, HDMI port, power board, or other hardware.
First, identify what “black screen” means
A black screen does not necessarily mean the television is completely off. Note which description matches your TV:

- No light, sound, or response: test the TV’s physical Power button and wall outlet.
- Sound but no picture: the TV may be on, but the input, HDMI connection, backlight, display system, or another component may be at fault.
- Black screen on one HDMI input: suspect the connected device, cable, port, splitter, switch, or adapter before resetting the TV.
- A logo appears and then disappears: the TV may be stuck during startup or may have a display-related fault.
- A faint or briefly visible image: the TV is operating, but the backlight or display system may be failing.
Sound, a status light, a startup sound, or a briefly visible TCL or Roku logo can indicate that the TV has power even when no usable picture appears. TCL’s troubleshooting guidance covers these symptoms in its no-video troubleshooting article.

Try the safe reset first: power-cycle the TV
This restart-style procedure does not erase apps, accounts, Wi-Fi details, or picture settings.

- Turn the TV off if it responds.
- Unplug it directly from the wall outlet.
- Leave it unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
- While it is unplugged, press and hold the TV’s physical Power button for approximately 10–15 seconds, if the model has one.
- Release the button, reconnect the TV directly to a working wall outlet, and turn it on using the physical button.
- Try the remote and press Home.
The physical button may be underneath the TCL logo, along the bottom edge, on the back, or on the side. Holding the Power button on the remote is not the same procedure. TCL also provides general instructions for a TV that will not power on at TCL Support.
Check inputs and external devices before factory-resetting
A factory reset is usually unnecessary if the TV’s own Home screen works. Isolate the problem in this order:
- Press Home, Input, or Source.
- Test another source, such as Live TV, Antenna, HDMI 1, or HDMI 2.
- Disconnect every HDMI and USB device, including a soundbar, receiver, game console, cable box, streaming stick, splitter, switch, and adapter.
- Reconnect the TV directly to the wall and turn it on with nothing connected.
- If the Home screen appears, reconnect devices one at a time.
- For a problem affecting only one device, try another HDMI port, another HDMI cable, and a direct connection without intermediary equipment.
If the TV works normally on its Home screen and other inputs, the problem is more likely to be the external source or HDMI connection than the TV’s operating system. TCL recommends avoiding HDMI splitters, switches, adapters, and extension cables while diagnosing a no-picture problem; see its no-picture and no-sound guidance.

Warning: A factory reset is destructive. It returns the television to its initial setup state and should come after the power cycle, input checks, and external-device tests.

TCL Roku TV
- Press Home.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Advanced system settings.
- Select Factory reset.
- Choose Factory reset everything and follow the prompts.
The TV will restart into Guided Setup. You will need to reconnect Wi-Fi, relink the Roku account, configure inputs, and reinstall or sign in to apps. See Roku’s factory-reset instructions.
TCL Google TV
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Select Factory reset.
- Follow the confirmation prompts.
Some TCL software versions show an intermediate Reset option, so the path may appear as Settings → System → About → Reset → Factory reset. TCL documents the current procedure at TCL’s Google TV factory-reset page.
TCL Fire TV
Depending on the model, use either:
- Settings → Device & Software → Reset to Factory Defaults
- Settings → My Fire TV → Reset to Factory Defaults
Confirm the reset when prompted. Fire TV’s procedure deletes stored settings, passwords, apps, and other user data. TCL’s model-dependent instructions are available on its Fire TV factory-reset page.
Older TCL Android TV
- Press Home.
- Open Settings.
- Select More Settings, if shown.
- Select Device Preferences.
- Select Reset.
- Select Factory data reset, confirm it, and choose Erase everything.
Older Android TV menus and recovery controls vary by model. Do not substitute a Google TV or Roku button sequence. TCL’s older Android TV instructions are at TCL Support.

Reset a TCL TV when the screen is too black to use the menu
These procedures are platform- and model-dependent. Confirm the model number and operating system before using a recovery combination.
TCL Roku TV: recessed Reset button or physical-button method
Some TCL Roku TVs have a recessed Reset button on the connector panel:
- Locate the recessed Reset button.
- Use a straightened paper clip or similar blunt tool.
- Press and hold the button for approximately 12 seconds.
- Release it when the reset cycle completes and the status indicator becomes dim.
- Turn the TV on and complete Guided Setup.
Models without a recessed button may use a TV Power-button procedure. Roku also documents different controls for some models, including Roku Pro Series televisions. There is no universal TCL Roku combination; consult Roku’s model guidance rather than guessing.
TCL Google TV: Recovery Mode
Use Recovery Mode when the TV is frozen, stuck on the logo, repeatedly restarting, or cannot reach Settings.

- Unplug the TV for approximately 30–60 seconds.
- Find the TV’s physical Power button.
- Press and hold it while the TV is unplugged.
- Continue holding it while reconnecting power.
- Keep holding until the Recovery Mode screen appears.
- Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset and confirm Yes or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the reset to finish, then select Reboot System Now.
- Complete Google TV setup.
Button locations and behavior differ across TCL models. If Recovery Mode does not appear, stop using an unverified sequence and check the model-specific instructions at TCL’s Google TV Recovery Mode guide. Do not unplug the TV while the reset is in progress.
TCL Fire TV: remote shortcut
If Settings cannot be opened, TCL documents this shortcut:
- Hold the remote’s Back button.
- At the same time, hold the right side of the navigation ring.
- Continue for approximately 10 seconds.
- Choose whether to continue or cancel when the reset screen appears.
If nothing is selected after approximately 20 seconds, the reset may proceed automatically. Treat this as a destructive action.

TCL Fire TV: Recovery Mode
TCL lists two model-dependent recovery methods.
Remote method: Unplug the TV for at least 30 seconds. Hold Back + Right Directional on the Fire TV remote while reconnecting power. Continue holding until Recovery Mode appears, then select Wipe Data/Factory Reset, confirm Yes, and complete setup after the restart.

Physical-button method: On certain models, unplug the TV for about 30 seconds, hold the TV’s physical Power + Volume Down buttons, reconnect power while holding them, and release when Recovery Mode appears. The physical-button option is not universal; see TCL’s Fire TV Recovery Mode instructions.

Before confirming, expect to lose:
- Downloaded apps and app logins.
- Roku, Google, or other account sign-in information stored on the TV.
- Wi-Fi network information and passwords.
- Picture, sound, parental-control, input, and other customized settings.
Afterward, the TV must return to its initial setup or Guided Setup screen. You will need to reconnect it to Wi-Fi, sign in again, reinstall apps, and restore your preferences.
What if the screen is still black after resetting?
First verify whether the reset actually produced the setup screen. If it did not, another factory reset is unlikely to help. A persistent black screen—especially with sound but no Home screen, a faint image, flashes, lines, or flickering—may involve the backlight, panel, video system, HDMI hardware, power supply, main board, or another internal component.
Stop troubleshooting and contact TCL or a qualified repair service if:
- The TV remains black after the power cycle, source isolation, and appropriate reset.
- The TV will not respond even to its physical Power button.
- It repeatedly returns to Recovery Mode or the reset never completes.
- The screen flashes, shows lines, flickers, or remains extremely dim.
- You notice burning smell, unusual heat, visible damage, or another electrical warning sign.
Do not open the television for a board-level repair as part of this troubleshooting process. A factory reset can address software or configuration problems, but it cannot restore failed display hardware.
Why reset instructions use different hold times
Numbers such as 10, 12, and 20 seconds refer to different procedures—not conflicting versions of one universal reset:
- 10–15 seconds: the unplugged power-cycle hold used in TCL troubleshooting.
- About 12 seconds: the recessed-button procedure documented for some Roku TVs.
- About 10 seconds: the TCL Fire TV remote shortcut.
- About 20 seconds: a timing referenced in some Fire TV physical reset guidance.
Use the timing for your platform and model, not a generic sequence copied from another TCL television.
