How to Reset a Lennox Furnace: Safe Steps by Model and Alert

Lennox furnaces do not share one universal reset procedure. Record the alert, identify your model, and follow its manual; stop and call a professional for urgent or safety-related faults.

There is no single reset sequence that safely applies to every Lennox furnace. First check and record the thermostat’s alert or error code, then use the instructions for your exact thermostat and furnace model. A thermostat reset, a system power reset and a safety-switch reset affect different components; clearing an alert does not necessarily fix its cause.

Before resetting a Lennox furnace

  1. Read and record the thermostat message. Open Notifications, review active alerts or warnings, and write down the displayed code before trying to clear it. Lennox’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking alerts first. Look up the code in the instructions for your equipment or contact a qualified HVAC contractor.
  2. Check the basic heat call. Confirm the thermostat is set to Heat and the target temperature is above the room temperature. If the furnace is overheating or shutting down, check whether the air filter is dirty or airflow is restricted. Replace a dirty filter only with the size and type specified for your installed unit; that is maintenance, not a furnace reset. Lennox gives “usually every three months” as general filter guidance, while noting that timing varies by filter.
  3. Identify the equipment and the reset being requested. Find the model number and consult the correct owner’s manual through Lennox’s product literature lookup. The procedure depends on the model and fault code.
  4. Follow only model-specific instructions. Do not assume that a reset button on a thermostat resets the furnace, or that a breaker sequence for one system applies to another. If the manual does not describe a homeowner reset for the condition, contact a technician rather than experimenting.

What kind of reset do you mean?

Reset type What it affects When it applies Homeowner guidance
Thermostat reset The thermostat’s own settings or behavior Only the thermostat models whose manual describes that control One Lennox Merit non-programmable thermostat manual describes a recessed button behind the thermostat door, below SETTINGS. It returns that thermostat’s settings to defaults; it is not a universal furnace reset.
System power reset Furnace or communicating-system controls Specific fault codes and equipment, as directed by Lennox documentation Use only the procedure documented for the exact model and alert. Do not generalize a breaker sequence from another Lennox system.
Equipment reset or re-detection Attached equipment recognized by a communicating thermostat Certain alerts and dealer-control-center workflows Some procedures require dealer-level access and are not the same as pressing a homeowner thermostat reset button.
Manual-reset safety switch A safety control, such as a flame-rollout switch After a safety control trips A trip may indicate a combustion hazard. Do not treat it as routine recovery; arrange professional inspection before operating the furnace again.

Where is the reset button on a Lennox furnace?

There is no single button location that applies to every Lennox furnace. Some Lennox thermostats have a reset control, but it resets the thermostat rather than necessarily resetting furnace equipment. In the Merit non-programmable thermostat manual, the recessed reset button is behind the thermostat door, below SETTINGS. That location and function apply to the documented thermostat family only. For a particular furnace fault, check the furnace and thermostat model numbers and follow the matching manual; do not press an unidentified switch or safety control.

Why a reset may not solve the problem

A reset can clear a displayed condition temporarily without correcting its cause. Lennox identifies possible causes of cold air or shutdown that may require troubleshooting rather than resetting:

  • A dirty filter or restricted airflow
  • Flame-sensor or pilot problems
  • Low gas supply
  • A blocked condensate line
  • Thermostat or duct problems

For a filter issue, follow the unit’s instructions and use the specified replacement. Ignition, gas, condensate, electrical, or recurring fault-code problems call for model-specific guidance and, where indicated, professional service. If the furnace does not start after a power outage, record any thermostat alert and consult the manual for that system instead of assuming that a universal power-cycle procedure applies.

When to stop and call for service

Urgent alerts and recurring codes

Lennox says red, service-urgent alerts indicate no heat, no cooling, or no ventilation and require service by a licensed HVAC contractor within 24 hours. Record the code and arrange service; do not repeatedly reset the system to suppress the warning.

Possible flame rollout or other warning signs

A flame-rollout switch stops fuel delivery if flame leaves the combustion zone. Lennox warns that rollout can expose nearby materials to flame and create a carbon monoxide risk. If you suspect a rollout trip, see soot or scorching, or notice a burning smell near the burner area, stop operating the furnace and arrange professional inspection before running it again. Do not bypass the switch or repeatedly press its reset. Lennox’s flame-rollout safety guidance says a tripped switch warrants inspection before operation.
