How to Reroute Customers to Your Business During Construction

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep customers coming by treating access as a coordinated project, not a last-minute sign. Get the current construction staging plan from the project manager or community liaison, confirm an approved route for drivers and pedestrians, make that route obvious at each decision point, and keep every customer-facing channel synchronized as the work changes.

A familiar road may be closed to through traffic while local business access remains open, or a driveway, sidewalk, parking area and delivery entrance may move in a later phase. Only the project team and local authority can confirm which arrangement applies. Never direct customers through a barricade, into an active work zone or along an unapproved shortcut.

Start with the route the project authority has confirmed

The most reliable customer route is the one shown in the current traffic-control or staging plan. Generic map directions can send a first-time visitor toward a closed turn, a temporary barrier or a driveway that is open only to construction vehicles.

Ask the project contact for a written access plan

Contact the project manager, community liaison or public-information representative before work begins. MnDOT’s business guidance puts the timing plainly: “It’s important to talk with MnDOT early to figure out what kind of access your business needs during construction.” Ask for a current map or written description covering:

  • Whether local access is preserved while through traffic is detoured. MnDOT describes that arrangement for some projects; it is not a promise for every road or jurisdiction.
  • Customer parking, accessible parking, loading zones and any temporary parking area.
  • Sidewalk, crosswalk, bicycle and public-transport routes, including an accessible path for people using wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility devices.
  • Delivery and supplier routes, vehicle-height or weight limits, and any time windows for trucks.
  • Planned short closures, emergency-access requirements and the person to call when field conditions differ from the plan.
  • The approval process for temporary business signs, including who supplies and installs them and how much notice is required.

Subscribe to the project website or update list, and save the contact details where staff can find them. Reconfirm the plan immediately before each phase change rather than relying on an old diagram.

Walk the route as a first-time customer

Drive or walk from every likely approach direction. At each decision point, ask whether someone who has never visited can answer three questions without stopping: Where do I turn? Which entrance is open? Where do I park or walk in?

Photograph the approved path in daylight and in the conditions when customers usually arrive. Note confusing intersections, low-visibility turns, blocked sightlines, temporary lighting, standing water and places where a sign would be hidden by equipment or parked vehicles. If a genuinely usable alternate entrance exists, mark it on a simple annotated map; do not label a gate or driveway as public access until the project representative confirms it.

How do I let customers know my business is still open during construction?

State the outcome first: the business is open, the current access route is specific, and the information has a check date. Use the same wording on roadside signs, your website, social accounts, email, voicemail, reservation pages and direct messages to regular customers.

Put the essential facts in one customer notice

A useful notice answers access, parking, walking and hours questions in a few lines. Keep it factual; do not call a road closed if local access remains, and do not promise a route that has not been confirmed.

WE’RE OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION. From [date] to [date], reach us via [street/turn/entrance]. Customer parking: [location]. Walk-in access: [route/accessibility details]. Deliveries: [route/time]. Hours: [hours]. We’ll post an update if the route changes. Last checked: [date/time].

Replace every bracketed item before publishing. If the project has no reliable end date, use the current phase and say when you will check the information again rather than guessing a completion date.

Use channels for different customer needs

  • Website: Put an access alert near the top of the home page and on the contact, location, appointment and store-hours pages. Include a small map or turn-by-turn description based on the approved plan.
  • Search and map listings: Update hours, entrance notes and temporary parking information where the platform allows it. Check that a map pin does not direct visitors to a closed driveway.
  • Email and text: Send an initial notice before the change, a reminder when barriers move and a correction immediately if field conditions change.
  • Social media: Pin the current route post, show a dated photo of the entrance and answer route questions with the same approved wording used elsewhere.
  • Phone and in-person service: Add the route to voicemail, appointment confirmations, receipts and staff scripts. A customer who calls from a blocked turn needs one clear instruction, not several unverified alternatives.
  • Direct outreach: Tell regular customers, tenants, event attendees, delivery recipients and neighboring businesses before the phase starts.

Assign one person to own updates. Every channel should show when the route was last checked, and obsolete posts should be edited, removed or clearly marked as superseded.

Where should I put temporary signs during road construction?

Place signs where a driver or pedestrian must decide, not only at the business entrance. The project engineer or relevant road authority must approve locations, wording, dimensions and installation. Local street rules can differ from state-highway rules, and a sign in a public right-of-way or near a traffic-control device may require a permit or may be prohibited.

Use a short, unmistakable message

Lead with the action: Business access via [street/entrance], followed by one turn cue and, when useful, a parking or pedestrian instruction. WisDOT recommends the wording “Access To” in its own guidance to distinguish business access from a road that is open to through traffic. That wording recommendation belongs to Wisconsin’s program; it is not a universal regulation.

Avoid crowded signs, multiple arrows and claims such as “road open” unless the authority has confirmed that through traffic is allowed. Use high-contrast lettering that can be read at the approach speed and distance approved by the authority. Exact sizes, colors, letter heights, mounting heights and sign spacing depend on jurisdiction and project conditions; do not copy a state-highway specification onto a local street without approval.

Sign the sequence, not every possible shortcut

  1. Advance notice: At the first approved approach where a customer might choose the old route, announce that the business remains open and identify the new approach.
  2. Decision point: At the actual turn, repeat the street or entrance name with a single clear arrow.
  3. Confirmation: Near the open driveway or door, identify customer parking and, if needed, the accessible entrance.
  4. Pedestrian connection: Where sidewalks or crossings shift, direct walkers along the continuous route approved for public use.
  5. Removal or revision: When the phase changes, remove or cover obsolete signs promptly under the project team’s direction.

Do not attach signs to barricades, utility poles, traffic-control devices or trees unless the authority expressly allows it. Keep signs out of sightlines, sidewalks, curb ramps and emergency-access paths. If crews move a barrier or a sign becomes misleading, contact the named project representative and post a temporary, verified digital update while the correction is coordinated.

Choosing a sign product

A temporary business-access or directional sign is the relevant product category for this use. A custom-printed panel with a compatible stake or frame may suit a short project, but verify weather resistance, mounting stability and visibility independently. A product is not automatically approved for a public road; placement and installation still require the authority’s permission.

Compare possible customer routes before choosing one

If the project team confirms more than one feasible approach, score each route against the factors that affect a real visit. A shorter drive can be worse if a turn is confusing, the path is unsafe or the route fails in the next phase.

Decision factor Questions to ask Evidence to record
Safety and approval Is the route explicitly open to the public, signed and consistent with the traffic-control plan? Written confirmation, approval contact and phase dates
First-visit clarity Can someone identify the turn, entrance and parking without stopping or making a U-turn? Walk-through notes, photos and feedback from a staff member unfamiliar with the route
Pedestrian and disability access Is there a continuous, usable path, accessible crossing and accessible entrance? Path inspection after each barrier or sidewalk change
Parking and transit Are spaces available, signed and close enough for customers using mobility devices? Can transit riders reach the door? Parking count, walking distance and transit-stop conditions
Delivery suitability Can supplier vehicles turn, load and leave without conflicting with customer traffic? Vehicle dimensions, time restrictions and driver confirmation
Phase reliability Will the route survive the next planned staging move? Staging schedule and a date for the next review
Effort and cost What signs, staff time, map updates and customer notices are required? Installation plan, update owner and recurring tasks

Select the route with the strongest combined score, not simply the fewest minutes of travel. If no route meets safety or accessibility requirements, ask the project team for a corrective plan before directing customers.

Prepare employees, suppliers and regular customers

Customers are not the only people who need rerouting. Give employees a one-page route sheet with the current entrance, parking, pedestrian path, hours, phase dates and escalation contact. Practice the answer to “How do I get there from [common approach]?” so staff do not improvise.

Send suppliers and delivery drivers a separate instruction when their vehicles cannot use the customer route. WisDOT recommends helping suppliers and truck drivers identify alternate routes and considering off-peak deliveries. Confirm clearance, turning space, loading location and the time window with each carrier. Update purchase orders, delivery notes and recurring courier instructions.

Tell regular customers who may not see public posts: appointment clients, members, tenants, event guests and people with recurring pickups. Offer to send the accessible route or parking details directly when that is more useful than a general announcement.

Keep access working while construction is active

Check the physical route on a schedule

Inspect the route at opening, after major crew moves and after severe weather. Check that arrows still point to the open entrance, signs are upright and visible, curb ramps and sidewalks are passable, lighting works after dark, and parking has not been taken by equipment or storage. Recheck public transport connections when stops or crossings move.

Separate customer, staff and delivery instructions

A customer car, a wheelchair user and a box truck may need different approaches. Publish only the customer route on public channels, and give staff and suppliers their vehicle-specific instructions privately. If a delivery route crosses customer space, schedule it for a quieter period when the authority and site conditions permit.

Track questions and operational effects

Log missed turns, wrong-entrance calls, late deliveries, canceled appointments, parking complaints and requests for accessible access. Review traffic patterns, inventory needs, pickup volume and sales records regularly. Use those observations to test practical adjustments such as different hours, pickup or delivery, online ordering, a second entrance, or a joint promotion with nearby businesses. These are options to evaluate, not guaranteed ways to recover construction-related revenue; no reliable universal sales lift or loss-prevention percentage has been established for these tactics.

What to do when the posted route is wrong

  1. Tell arriving customers the verified safe alternative and, if necessary, arrange pickup or another service method.
  2. Call the named project representative with the exact location, time and obstruction.
  3. Update the website, pinned social post, voicemail and staff route sheet with the temporary approved instruction.
  4. Replace or remove misleading signs only as directed by the authority.
  5. Record the incident and check that the permanent correction is visible before restoring the normal message.

Never ask a customer to move a barricade, walk through an active work zone or use a route marked for construction personnel.

When a construction phase changes or work ends

Phase changes are when stale directions cause the most confusion. Before the scheduled switch, obtain the next approved map, identify every sign and online reference that must change, and brief employees and suppliers. On the change date, inspect the route rather than assuming the plan was implemented exactly as drawn.

Remove or revise obsolete signs as soon as the approved route changes, with the project team’s direction on responsibility and timing. Update map listings, web pages, social posts, email templates, voicemail and printed materials. Tell customers when the normal entrance returns, and explain any new access benefit such as a rebuilt sidewalk, additional parking or a safer crossing. Business Queensland guidance specifically recommends communicating completion and promoting new access benefits.

Keep a short record of what worked: which sign locations were legible, which questions recurred, how deliveries were affected and which accessibility checks caught problems. Add those lessons, contact names and update templates to the business continuity plan for the next project.

Agency guidance and what it does—and does not—establish

WisDOT’s In This Together: Business Construction Coordination Program Guide and its outreach and operations guidance cover temporary signage, alternate routes, delivery planning, customer communications and operational adjustments. Colorado Department of Transportation guidance likewise emphasizes clear signs and regular updates. MnDOT’s Helping Businesses During Construction discusses local business access, through-traffic detours, business signs and updates.

Business Queensland’s guidance addresses planning, access, parking, accessibility, customer updates and operating changes during major infrastructure work. A National Transportation Library report, Mitigating Construction Impacts on Local Businesses, reports that “Four of 11 respondents do not use alternative parking options.” The same report says agencies rated on-site signage, alternative parking and staging incentives effective to varying degrees. That is a survey of agency practice, not proof that any one measure increases sales.

These sources are practical guidance from particular jurisdictions, not a substitute for your local traffic-control plan, permits, accessibility requirements, construction notices or legal advice. Confirm every public-road route and sign with the responsible authority.

A concise implementation checklist

  • Find the project website, subscribe to updates and save the project contact.
  • Obtain the current staging plan and written customer, pedestrian, parking and delivery routes.
  • Ask about short closures, emergency access, sign approvals and the next phase-change date.
  • Walk and drive the route from likely approaches; photograph turns, entrances and parking.
  • Choose an approved route that is safe, understandable, accessible and workable for deliveries.
  • Design the shortest clear message: business open, access street or entrance, parking and a check date.
  • Install only authority-approved signs at decision points, then inspect them regularly.
  • Synchronize website, map listings, social media, email, voicemail, staff scripts and supplier instructions.
  • Recheck barriers, sidewalks, crossings, lighting, parking and transit after every staging move.
  • Track customer questions, missed deliveries and operational patterns; adjust services cautiously.
  • Revise or remove obsolete directions immediately when the route changes.
  • Announce the normal route’s return and record lessons for the continuity plan.
