To make a button trigger actions beyond Hue’s built-in options—such as controlling non-Hue devices—you need a third-party app or a smart-home platform such as Home Assistant. Philips requires a Hue Bridge for custom switch configuration in the Hue app.
Identify which Hue Dimmer Switch you have
Button labels differ by generation, so check the switch before following button-specific instructions. Philips says both versions support the same set of Hue functionality, but their labels and default behavior differ.

Philips’ Dimmer Switch product page describes the models and their capabilities. Without a Bridge, the switch can connect directly to up to 10 Hue lights, but Philips says you cannot customize its button behavior through the Hue app in that setup. With a Bridge, Philips says it can control up to two Rooms, a Zone, or the whole Hue setup.

The Hue app offers a defined set of Hue actions rather than turning each button into an unrestricted programmable key. Depending on the button, setup, and app version, you can choose a Room or Zone, select scenes, use time-of-day behavior, cycle through favorite scenes, turn lights off, or start and stop Hue automations that can be activated manually in the app. The app also offers Smart On/Off behavior: Philips describes it as turning lights off when they are already on, or selecting an appropriate scene when they are off. See Philips’ supported Dimmer Switch functions.

- WHAT’S IN THE BOX: Includes one latest model (V2) battery-powered dimmer switch for lights; add more ways to manage your Hue lights for everyone in your home, including kids and guests
- REQUIRES A HUE BRIDGE: Unlock the power of Hue and enjoy automations, manage from anywhere with a secure, stable connection that won’t drain your Wi-Fi, use Matter to connect your smart home devices
- ENJOY PRESET SCENES: The smart dimmer switch dims and brightens, turns lights on and off, cycles between four of your favorite scenes or provides the right light based on time of day
- SET UP: Mount the light switch to a wall with the included adhesive, or to a metal surface using the magnetic backing. Detach the switch from the plate to use as a remote, then open the Hue app and follow the prompts.
- PERSONALIZE YOUR LIGHT: Customize settings in the Hue app; select the lights you want to manage with the Hue switch, and personalize the settings
- Room or Zone: Set the control target. A Zone is useful when you want a switch to control selected lights within a physical Room without reorganizing those lights.
- Scenes: Assign a scene or, where offered, cycle among favorite scenes on repeated presses. The scene order and button assignment depend on the configuration shown in your app.
- Time-based behavior: Choose behavior that changes by time of day if the switch configuration offers it.
- Hue automations: Start or stop a Hue automation that is manually activatable in the Hue app. This is not the same as calling any routine in Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, or Home Assistant.
- Dimming: The Brighten and Dim buttons on the current model are naturally suited to brightness changes, though advanced remapping depends on the controller you use.
Do not assume every Hue app release supports separate press, hold, double-press, or release actions for every button. Button-level event programming is more flexible in some third-party apps and automation platforms.
Reprogram the switch in the Hue app
- Open the Philips Hue app and go to Settings.
- Open Devices or Accessories, then select the Hue Dimmer Switch. Philips’ support wording and app labels can vary by version and platform.
- Open the switch’s edit or configuration screen.
- Select the button or behavior you want to change.
- Choose the target Room, Zone, or whole setup, then select an available scene, time-based behavior, on/off option, or Hue automation action.
- Save or return to the device screen, then test the button with the lights both on and off.
- Repeat for the other buttons you want to change.
Philips describes accessory setup and editing on its Dimmer Switch support and product page. If your app uses Accessories rather than Devices, open that section.
Set up common button behaviors
Make it a simple on/off control
Choose the desired Room or Zone for the top button and select an on/off or Smart On/Off behavior if that option is available. Avoid scene cycling on that button if you want a straightforward control. Toggle behavior and separate on and off actions are not identical: a toggle responds to the current light state, while a scene action applies a chosen scene and may not restore the previous state. The choices depend on the switch generation and current app configuration.

- WHAT’S IN THE BOX - Includes one white wall tap dial dimmer light switch and one CR2032 batteries; Provides immediate control of the smart lights throughout your home
- REQUIRES A HUE BRIDGE - Unlock the power of Hue and enjoy automations, control from anywhere in the world, and a secure, stable connection that won’t drain your Wi-Fi. Matter compatible.
- ENJOY YOUR PRESET SCENES - Set the mood instantly with the push of a button. You choose which scenes each of the four buttons set, even 24-hour scenes such as Natural light.
- SET UP - Use the wireless dial like a regular led dimmer switch by mounting it to the wall with its adhesive backing. Remove the dial from the wall plate to use it as a remote control.
- PERSONALIZE YOUR LIGHT - Program each smart switch button to control a different Room or Zone with its own light setting.
Control different lights from different buttons
Create or identify the Rooms or Zones you want to control. In the switch configuration, select a button, set its target, and choose its scene or lighting behavior; repeat for another button. Use a Zone when only a subset of lights in a Room should respond, rather than creating an artificial Room solely for switch control. Philips documents Room, Zone, and whole-setup targets on its Dimmer Switch page.
Cycle through scenes
Philips supports cycling through favorite scenes on repeated presses. Configure the relevant button and choose the available scene-cycling behavior; the app determines which button and scene order are available for your setup. Press repeatedly to move among the configured favorites.
Start a Hue automation
- Create the Hue automation first and confirm that you can start it manually in the Hue app.
- Open the Dimmer Switch configuration and select the button to assign.
- Choose the automation action and configure start or stop behavior where offered.
- Test the button and verify that the automation starts or stops as intended.
A Hue automation is limited to Hue’s own supported behavior; it does not automatically expose arbitrary actions from other smart-home platforms.

Choose an advanced controller for more actions
If your goal is still mainly Hue lighting, a third-party Hue app can offer more detailed switch programming. If you want to control devices outside Hue or build conditional, multi-step routines, use an automation platform that manages those devices.
| Goal | Official Hue app | Third-party Hue app | Home Assistant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control a Hue Room or Zone | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Activate Hue scenes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Cycle scenes | Yes | May offer more flexibility | Possible with automation logic |
| Assign press- or hold-specific actions | Limited or version-dependent | More detailed options may be available | Yes, using button events |
| Control non-Hue devices | Usually not directly | Depends on the app and integrations | Yes, through configured integrations |
| Run scripts or multi-device routines | Limited to Hue-supported actions | App-dependent | Yes |
Hue Essentials or iConnectHue
Hue Essentials documents separate actions for press and hold, including repeated actions while a Dimmer Switch button is held. Its documentation is at Hue Essentials’ smart-switch automation guide. Features can vary by platform, app version, and Bridge generation, so check the relevant app listing for current compatibility and pricing.
iConnectHue is an iPhone and iPad app with switch customization; its U.S. App Store listing showed a $3.99 app price on August 18, 2026, and describes optional in-app purchases and memberships. It is Apple-platform focused and remains a Hue-oriented controller rather than a universal automation system.

Home Assistant for cross-brand actions
Home Assistant treats Hue remotes as stateless devices: a button press generates a hue_event rather than changing a conventional on/off switch entity. You can use the event to trigger an automation that controls Hue lights, plugs, other smart-home devices, scenes, scripts, or services. Follow Home Assistant’s current Hue integration documentation for setup and event details.
- In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Devices & services > Add Integration, search for Philips Hue, and connect the Hue Bridge.
- Go to Settings > Developer tools > Events and subscribe to
hue_event. - Press each physical button once; also test holding and releasing it. Record the event data Home Assistant reports for your own device.
- Create an automation using the observed Hue event as its trigger.
- Add the action you want, such as activating a scene, controlling a plug, or running a script, then test one button at a time.
Event data can vary by device generation and integration implementation, so inspect your own events rather than relying on a copied example. Home Assistant’s Hue documentation also states that the Hue API limits button events to one event per device per second; that can affect rapid presses, scene cycling, and repeated dimming commands.

Hue configuration and Home Assistant can both respond to the same press. If you get double actions or unexpected scene changes, remove or change one of the overlapping assignments. For Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home, compatibility and button-level behavior depend on each platform’s current implementation; Philips lists integrations on its Hue apps and integrations page.
Best Value
- CONTROL LIGHTS WITH A CLICK: A simple touch of the smart button is enough to turn your lights on and off, cycle through scenes, and more. Press and hold to dim or brighten the space
- GET THE BEST LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE DAY: The wireless light switch button uses the Time-based light function by default, giving you the best light for each moment of the day
- CUSTOMIZE IN THE APP: Set the Rooms or Zone your button controls, adjust settings to remote control lights or start an automation, choose scenes you want for each time slot, and more in the Hue app
- START/STOP AUTOMATIONS: Start or stop an automation created in the Automations tab with a simple press on your PHILIPS Hue Switch
- FLEXIBLE, WIRELESS MOUNTING: Use the included adhesive to mount the Hue button around your home — or place it on any magnetic surface.
Troubleshoot a switch that is not behaving as configured
The switch is missing from the Hue app
- Check that the Bridge is powered and connected, your phone is on the same local network during setup, and the battery is installed correctly.
- Move the switch closer to the Hue system and check whether it is already paired to another Bridge.
- If normal pairing fails, remove the switch, hold its physical setup pinhole for more than 10 seconds, and add it again, following Philips’ reset instructions.
The new action does not run
- Confirm that the button targets the intended Room or Zone and that the scene includes lights.
- If it is assigned to a Hue automation, confirm that the automation can be started manually in the Hue app.
- Check that the app saved the configuration and that another platform is not also reacting to the button.
- Test with the lights in both on and off states; the same scene or toggle setting can produce different results depending on their current state.
The button turns lights on but not off
Check whether it is assigned to scene activation rather than a true toggle, and whether Smart On/Off is available and selected for that configuration. A scene applies the chosen lighting state; it should not be assumed to turn lights off or restore their previous state.
Dimming is delayed or presses are skipped
In Home Assistant, the documented one-event-per-second Hue API limit may affect rapid button events. Other possible causes include concurrent automations, multiple platforms responding, a weak battery, or Bridge and network latency. Test with overlapping automations disabled to isolate the cause.
Home Assistant receives no event
Confirm that the Hue integration is connected to the Bridge the switch is paired with, and that the event listener is subscribed to the exact name hue_event before pressing the button. Home Assistant documents this diagnostic process under Settings > Developer tools > Events in its Hue integration guide.
Reset the configuration or start over
First use the reset control in the switch’s edit screen in the Hue app. If the problem persists, delete the switch from the Hue system, hold the physical setup pinhole for more than 10 seconds, and add it again. Configure one button and test it before adding more complex actions. Philips describes both reset options on its Dimmer Switch page.
Quick Recap
Which route should you use?
- Use the Hue app if you have a Bridge and want to control Hue lights, scenes, Zones, or Hue automations with minimal setup.
- Try a third-party Hue app if you want more switch-event detail while keeping the work mainly inside Hue.
- Use Home Assistant if a button needs to control non-Hue devices, run scripts, or follow conditions across brands.
- Consider another physical controller if you need a mains-powered switch for ordinary bulbs or want a different layout. The Dimmer Switch is a battery-powered wireless controller, not a conventional mains switch.
