If a Reno construction zone presents immediate danger, a crash, an injury, a blocked travel lane, or an active threat, call 911. For a serious but non-emergency police matter, call Reno Police at 775-334-COPS (2677). Report City of Reno road hazards and City construction-project problems to Reno Direct at 775-334-INFO (4636). State-maintained routes go to NDOT through 511, NVRoads.com, or 775-888-7000; county roads go to Washoe County 311 at 311 or 775-328-2003.
Choose the contact by combining three facts: how urgent the danger is, who owns the road, and whether you need police intervention or a maintenance/traffic-operations response. Make the report only from a safe location, and never enter live traffic to photograph a problem or move cones.

When to call 911
Call 911 when waiting for a routine work order could expose people to immediate harm. Examples include:
- A vehicle has crashed in or beside the work zone.
- Someone is injured or appears to need urgent medical help.
- A live travel lane is blocked by equipment, debris, flooding, a fallen barrier, or a disabled vehicle and drivers face an imminent collision risk.
- Traffic-control devices have failed in a way that creates an immediate conflict between moving vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, or workers.
- An active threat, dangerous confrontation, fire, or other emergency is occurring.
Tell the dispatcher that the location is an active construction zone. Give the road name, nearest cross street or landmark, direction of travel, lane affected, and the hazard. Stay in a safe place and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not stop in a travel lane to make the call; a passenger should call, or you should pull completely off the roadway before dialing when circumstances allow.
When Reno Police’s non-emergency line is the better choice
Use 775-334-COPS (2677) when the condition is not immediately threatening but still requires police notification or a police response. This can include a traffic-control setup that is creating a dangerous but not currently life-threatening conflict, a work-zone obstruction that needs an officer to manage traffic, or a road-user dispute at the project.

Police can address an active traffic hazard or conflict; they are not the general channel for a City maintenance work order. Reporting a City of Reno construction-zone problem
Reno Direct is the City’s non-emergency service center for government service requests and general information. Reno Public Works identifies it for City construction-project issues, traffic issues, road hazards, and traffic-flow concerns.

Call Reno Direct
Dial 775-334-INFO (4636). The City’s published hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Explain that you are reporting a safety or traffic condition, then provide the location and details in the checklist below. Reno Direct can route a request when you are unsure which City department owns the issue; Reno Public Works advises, “When in doubt, contact Reno Direct.”
Submit an online service request
Use the City’s online service-request option when the problem is non-emergency and you can provide a precise location and description. An online request is useful for conditions such as missing or confusing signs, displaced cones or barriers, construction debris, a signal problem, or a traffic-flow concern that does not require an immediate police response.

Reporting an NDOT-controlled road
State-maintained routes are handled through the Nevada Department of Transportation. The City’s road-contact information directs residents to NDOT’s 5-1-1 system or NVRoads.com for road conditions. For a roadway issue that needs an NDOT request, call 775-888-7000 or use NDOT’s online request form.
Use 511 or NVRoads.com for current conditions
511 and NVRoads.com are the appropriate starting points for state-route conditions, closures, and travel information. Check them when you need to know whether a lane closure or work-zone change is already reported.

Use the NDOT request form for a non-emergency issue
NDOT explicitly states that its request form is not an emergency-response channel. The NDOT Help Center directs urgent road concerns to Nevada Highway Patrol (*NHP, *647) or local police and says to dial 911 for emergencies. If a barrier has fallen into traffic, a crash is unfolding, or people face immediate danger, make that emergency call instead of waiting for an online response.

Reporting a Washoe County road
For a county-maintained road or a county service question, call Washoe County at 311 or 775-328-2003. The county describes 3-1-1 as a way to reach representatives for non-emergency government matters.
State that the concern is in a construction zone and identify the road ownership if you know it. If you are uncertain whether the road is City or county controlled, provide the exact location and ask the representative to route the request. Use 911 for immediate danger rather than a county service channel.
What information to include in every report
A precise description lets dispatchers, police, or road crews find the problem without searching through an entire project. Prepare these details before calling or submitting a request:
- Road and nearest cross street: Name the street, highway, ramp, or frontage road and the closest intersection.
- Landmark or mile marker: Add a business, bridge, exit, project entrance, or mile marker that distinguishes the location.
- Direction of travel: Say northbound, southbound, eastbound, westbound, or the specific turn movement.
- Affected lane or shoulder: Identify the left, center, or right lane, an on-ramp, a bike lane, a sidewalk, or the shoulder.
- Hazard type: Explain whether the issue is a missing barrier, confusing or absent sign, displaced cone, debris, flooding, malfunctioning signal, or workers or equipment in the travel path.
- Time observed: Give the time and date you saw it and whether the condition is still present.
- People involved: Say whether anyone is injured, trapped, stranded, or in immediate danger.
- Change over time: Note whether the obstruction is moving, worsening, intermittent, or newly created.
Use plain location language first. “Eastbound on the approach to the Virginia Street intersection, right lane, immediately before the concrete barriers” is more actionable than a project name alone.

How to report without putting yourself in danger
- Get clear of the hazard. Keep your vehicle out of the active lane and remain behind a barrier or in another safe area if one is available.
- Call from a stopped, legal position. If you are driving alone, pull fully off the roadway before using the phone. A passenger can make the report while the vehicle continues safely.
- Do not walk into traffic. Never cross a live lane to inspect a sign, retrieve debris, reset a cone, or approach a worker.
- Do not move traffic-control equipment. Cones, drums, barricades, and signs may be positioned for a reason that is not visible from your viewpoint. Moving them can expose workers and drivers to a new conflict.
- Do not confront a crew or another road user. Report the condition and let the responsible agency or police handle disputes.
- Share a photograph only when it is safe. Take a photo from a stopped, lawful location or have a passenger do it. Do not stop in a travel lane, stand on a shoulder beside fast traffic, or walk into the work area to obtain a better image.
Which response do you need: police or road maintenance?
The same construction setup can require different contacts depending on what is happening at the moment.

Common Reno construction-zone hazards and the useful description for each
Missing, displaced, or confusing barriers
State whether a barrier is absent, knocked over, shifted, or leaving a gap that appears to expose workers or a travel lane. Identify which side of the road and the direction of travel. If vehicles are already entering the closed area, treat the situation as urgent and use 911 when there is immediate danger.
Unclear or absent signs
Specify the sign that is missing or contradictory, such as an absent lane-closure warning, an arrow pointing the wrong way, or a sign hidden by equipment. Explain what a driver or pedestrian is likely to do as a result.
Debris or equipment in the travel path
Describe the object, approximate size if you can judge it safely, and whether it is in a lane, shoulder, bike lane, sidewalk, or ramp. Say whether traffic is swerving around it or whether a vehicle is stopped because of it.
Flooding, mud, or standing water
Report the lowest point, direction of travel, lanes affected, and whether water is covering markings or preventing vehicles from passing. If a vehicle is stranded or the water is creating an immediate collision risk, call 911.

Signal or temporary traffic-control failure
Identify the intersection, the signal or temporary device that is malfunctioning, and the conflicting movements you observed. A signal displaying conflicting indications, remaining dark, or failing to alternate traffic can require immediate emergency attention.
Workers or machinery in a live lane
Say whether workers or equipment are stationary or moving, which lane they occupy, and whether warning devices or a spotter are present. Do not approach the work area to verify details.
What happens after you submit a report
Emergency calls are assessed by dispatch and may result in police, fire, medical, or traffic-control response. A non-emergency police call is evaluated for an officer response. Reno Direct, NDOT, and Washoe County service requests are routed to the agency responsible for the roadway or maintenance function.
Keep the request number or other confirmation supplied by an online system if you receive one. If the condition becomes more dangerous after your original report, make a new urgency-based call rather than assuming the earlier service request has been upgraded. Explain that you previously reported the location and describe the new risk.
Quick decision checklist
- Is there an injury, crash, active threat, blocked lane, or immediate risk of a collision? Call 911.
- Is police attention needed, but the situation is not immediately threatening? Call 775-334-COPS (2677).
- Is it a City of Reno street or City construction-project issue? Call Reno Direct at 775-334-INFO (4636) or submit a City service request.
- Is it a state-maintained route? Use 511 or NVRoads.com for conditions; call 775-888-7000 or submit an NDOT request for a non-emergency roadway issue.
- Is it a Washoe County road? Call 311 or 775-328-2003.
- Can you provide the road, nearest cross street or landmark, travel direction, lane or shoulder, hazard, observation time, and injury status?
- Are you stopped safely, or can a passenger make the report? If not, wait until you can do so without entering live traffic.
Key points to remember
Use 911 for immediate danger, not for routine construction complaints. Reno Direct is the City channel for road hazards, traffic-flow concerns, and City construction-project issues. NDOT handles state routes and warns that its online request form is not emergency response. Washoe County 311 handles county service matters. Whatever channel you use, a precise location and a safe reporting method help responders act without creating another hazard.
