How to Remove the Battery from Any Samsung Remote: Simple Steps by Remote Type

The right removal method depends on your Samsung remote. A sliding Smart Remote opens differently from a standard remote with a removable rear cover, while a SolarCell Remote has a rechargeable battery that should not be removed at all. Check the back of the remote first, then follow the matching procedure below.

First, identify your Samsung remote

What you see What to do
An eject or arrow button on the upper rear Press the button and slide the remote body to expose the battery compartment.
An arrow near the bottom of a sliding rear cover Push the cover in the direction of the arrow with both thumbs.
A small notch on a conventional rear cover Pull the notch gently to remove the battery cover.
A large silver panel or a USB-C port on the back This may be a SolarCell Remote. Charge it instead of trying to remove a battery.

Samsung has used different remote designs and battery sizes. Do not assume that every Samsung remote takes AAA batteries. Look for the battery-size marking inside the compartment and follow the positive (+) and negative (−) symbols.

Samsung Smart Remote with an eject or arrow button

This is the distinctive sliding-body design found on some Samsung Smart Remotes.

  1. Turn the remote over so the back faces upward.
  2. Press the eject or arrow button on the upper rear of the remote.
  3. When the body pops out slightly from its outer cover, slide the body upward.
  4. Continue sliding until the battery compartment is visible.
  5. Press the small release buttons on the left and right sides of the compartment. The batteries should release so you can lift them out.
  6. If you are replacing them, install two 1.5-volt batteries with the ends aligned to the symbols inside the compartment.
  7. Slide the body back down into place. On models with a rear eject button, press and hold that button while sliding the body fully closed.

For a compartment marked AAA, AAA alkaline batteries are a suitable replacement choice. Verify the compartment marking before buying: Samsung also documents Smart Remote designs that use AA batteries.

Samsung Smart Remote with a sliding rear cover

Some Smart Remotes have no obvious eject button. Instead, an arrow near the bottom of the back shows the direction in which the cover opens.

  1. Hold the remote securely with both hands.
  2. Place both thumbs on the rear cover.
  3. Push the cover forward in the direction shown by the arrow.
  4. When the compartment is open, lift out the old batteries.
  5. Check the markings before installing replacements. Samsung documentation for one version of this design specifies two 1.5-volt AA batteries, so do not substitute AAA batteries unless the compartment specifically calls for them.
  6. Slide the rear cover back until it is fully closed.

If your compartment is marked AA, AA alkaline batteries can be used as replacements. The marking inside your particular remote takes priority over a general Samsung remote instruction.

Standard Samsung remote with a removable rear cover

  1. Turn the remote over and find the notch on the rear battery cover.
  2. Pull the notch gently until the cover loosens.
  3. Remove the cover completely.
  4. Lift or slide the batteries out carefully. Avoid bending or damaging the spring contacts.
  5. Check the compartment for its battery-size and polarity markings.
  6. For a compartment marked AAA, install two AAA alkaline batteries with the plus and minus ends aligned correctly.
  7. Replace the cover and slide it until it is fully secured.

Samsung recommends alkaline batteries for longer battery life on the referenced remote designs. Never force a battery into the compartment or reverse its polarity.

SolarCell Remote: do not try to remove the battery

A Samsung SolarCell Remote does not use ordinary removable batteries. It has a rechargeable battery that can charge from indoor light through the solar panel on the back or through a USB-C connection. A large silver panel generally indicates the solar-charging design; a USB-C port without that panel indicates a USB-C charging configuration.

This remote does not have removable batteries. If it stops responding, place the solar panel facing upward under indoor light, or connect a USB-C charging cable to the remote and a suitable power source. Do not pry open the shell.

On supported Samsung TVs, you can check the remote’s battery status through Home > Settings > All Settings > Power and Energy Saving > Available Remote Battery. If the remote’s LED remains illuminated for at least five seconds after you press a button, Samsung indicates that the remote needs charging.

If the battery will not come out

  1. Confirm that the rear cover or sliding body is fully open.
  2. For the eject-button Smart Remote, press both small release buttons on the left and right sides of the battery compartment.
  3. Check that you are pulling or sliding in the direction indicated by the arrow. Do not try to lift a cover that is designed to slide.
  4. Use your fingers rather than a screwdriver, knife, or other sharp object.
  5. Stop if the battery is swollen, leaking, corroded, hot, or visibly damaged.

Do not pry the remote apart. These designs are intended to open without tools, and forcing the shell can damage its clips or internal electronics. If a battery is damaged, avoid normal handling and follow local hazardous-waste or battery-recycling instructions.

How to dispose of the old batteries

Identify the battery chemistry before disposal. In the United States, alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries can generally go in household trash in many communities, but local or state rules may differ. Battery recyclers are another option where available.

Lithium, button-cell, and rechargeable batteries require different handling. Do not assume they follow the same disposal rules as ordinary alkaline batteries, and do not place them in household trash or curbside recycling where local guidance prohibits it. A local recycling or take-back service is especially important for a leaking, swollen, hot, or otherwise damaged battery.

Quick replacement checklist

  • Identify whether the remote is a sliding Smart Remote, a standard rear-cover remote, or a SolarCell Remote.
  • Confirm AA versus AAA inside the compartment before purchasing batteries.
  • Use the polarity symbols to orient every battery.
  • Use alkaline batteries where the remote design calls for standard replaceable batteries.
  • Do not use tools to pry open the remote.
  • Charge a SolarCell Remote rather than trying to remove its rechargeable battery.
  • Dispose of batteries according to their chemistry and local rules.

Can I remove the battery from a Samsung SolarCell Remote?

No. A SolarCell Remote uses a rechargeable battery rather than ordinary removable batteries. Charge it under indoor light with the solar panel facing upward or use its USB-C charging connection.

What should I do if a Samsung remote battery is stuck?

Make sure the cover is fully open and, on the relevant Smart Remote design, press both side release buttons. Avoid sharp tools and excessive force. If the battery is swollen, leaking, corroded, hot, or damaged, stop handling it normally and follow local battery-safety and disposal guidance.

The Bottom Line

Match the opening method to the remote: slide an eject-button Smart Remote, push an arrow-marked rear cover, or pull the notch on a standard cover. Check AA versus AAA before replacing batteries, and charge—not open—a Samsung SolarCell Remote.
