How to Remove Musty Smells from a Closet—and Keep Them Gone

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A musty closet smell is a moisture warning, not a fragrance problem. Empty the closet, find and correct leaks or condensation, then clean and dry the affected surfaces and belongings. Air fresheners may hide the odor briefly while mold or damp materials continue to generate it.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that mold can appear as spots of many colors and smell musty. Odor can also come from mold hidden behind stored items, inside porous materials, or behind building finishes, so an empty, visibly clean closet is not proof that the source is gone.

Why a musty closet needs investigation

Closets have limited air movement and are often packed against walls, floors and ceilings. A small plumbing leak, exterior water entry, condensation on a cold wall, or damp clothing can therefore remain unnoticed. The odor is a clue that something is retaining moisture; it is not a diagnosis of the exact source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cleaning or deodorizing without correcting water entry is temporary. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that if mold is cleaned but the water problem is not fixed, the mold problem will most likely return. Treat the source, the growth and the affected contents as separate tasks.

  • 14% MORE MOISTURE ABSORBING POWER*. You can see DampRid work as it attracts and traps excess moisture.
  • LONG-LASTING FRESHNESS: DampRid hanging bag moisture absorbers can last up to 60 days depending on temperature and humidity. Ideal for use in closets to protect your clothes and leather goods from musty odors and moisture damage.
  • TIME-RELEASE FRAGRANCE TECHNOLOGY continuously releases a pleasant scent over the life of the product. Hang in your laundry room, dorm room, mud room, bathroom or anywhere excess moisture and stagnant air are a nuisance.
  • EASY TO USE: Simply remove from packaging, shake gently to activate fragrance, and hang with enough space for air circulation. Discard in trash when liquid reaches the replacement line. (*Compared to 14.5-ounce bags).

Do not assume that a stronger smell always means a larger patch, or that no visible patch means no problem. Mold can be hidden behind boxes, shelving, baseboards, insulation or other porous building materials. A recurring odor after cleaning is a reason to investigate further, not a reason to keep adding fragrance.

Step 1: Empty the closet and inspect every surface

Remove clothing, shoes, boxes and other contents far enough to see the entire closet. Place questionable items in a clean, dry area while you investigate; do not pack damp or moldy belongings back into another enclosed space.

  1. Inspect the ceiling and upper corners. Look for water staining, peeling finishes, condensation or growth.
  2. Check walls and wall-to-floor joints. Pay special attention to an exterior wall, a wall shared with a bathroom or kitchen, and areas hidden by shelving.
  3. Examine the floor. Look under shelving, storage bins and rugs for dampness, staining or softened materials.
  4. Look behind and beneath stored objects. Mold may be concealed where air cannot circulate.
  5. Trace nearby water sources. Check plumbing on the other side of a wall, roof or window edges above, HVAC components, and any recent spill or flooding.
  6. Check the contents themselves. Feel for damp fabric, inspect leather and cardboard, and look for spotting or discoloration.

A closet can smell musty with no visible growth. If the odor remains after contents are removed, investigate concealed cavities, damp insulation or a building leak rather than assuming the smell is in the clothing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a simple inspection record

Note where the odor is strongest, which surfaces feel damp, and whether staining appears after rain, showers or use of nearby plumbing. Photographs of staining or damaged materials can help a plumber, building manager or remediation professional understand the pattern. Keep the record factual: an odor suggests a problem but does not identify the type of mold or the source by itself.

Step 2: Stop the moisture before cleaning

Do not begin a cosmetic cleanup while an active source is wetting the closet. The appropriate repair depends on what you find.

Observed condition Immediate response
Supply or drain leak Stop the leak and arrange plumbing repair. Dry surrounding materials before replacing stored items.
Water staining after rain Have the roof, window, exterior wall or flashing investigated and repaired; drying the closet alone will not stop recurrence.
Condensation on a cold wall or pipe Improve air movement, insulate or otherwise correct the condensation source, and reduce room humidity.
Damp clothing, shoes or towels Remove and dry them completely before storage. Do not place damp items in a closed closet.
Recent flooding or significant water damage Document the damage, begin safe drying where practical and consider qualified remediation guidance.

Never paint or caulk over mold. Coating can hide the condition while moisture remains underneath; cleanup and moisture correction come first.

Drying the visible surface is not the same as repairing the source. A wall can feel dry while insulation or framing behind it remains wet. If staining follows a plumbing route, appears after storms, or returns after repeated drying, arrange an assessment instead of repeatedly wiping the same area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Prepare safely for cleanup

For a small, accessible area, wear gloves, eye protection and a suitable mask or respirator as advised by current public-health guidance. Keep the area ventilated when practical and safe. People with asthma, chronic lung disease, immune suppression or other health concerns should obtain medical or professional advice before disturbing mold.

Read every cleaning-product label. The CDC’s cleanup guidance is explicit: do not mix cleaners, and never mix bleach with ammonia. More chemical strength is not a substitute for removing the growth and drying the surface.

CLEVAST Moisture Absorbers Packets 10 Pack, Dehumidifier Bags for Closet, Unscented Hanging Humidity Absorber in Wardrobes, Bedrooms, Bathrooms(Net Wt. 230g/Pack)
  • EFFECTIVE DEHUMIDIFICATION: The CLEVAST dehumidifier bags feature spherical calcium chloride particles that can attract and absorb excess moisture quickly and efficiently. Moisture absorbers are designed with a premium one-way moisture-permeable paper that will securely lock the moisture inside.(WHEN the temperature drops sharply or the humidity is low, crystals may appear inside the bag, and no water droplets at the bottom. This is normal, please be patient for the product to work)
  • VISIBLE DEHUMIDIFYING PROCESS: The CLEVAST absorber bags capture excess moisture in the air and trap it to a large 500ml water storage. The accumulated water through the dehumidification effect can be observed anytime. Dehumidifier bags can be used for up to 60 days (NOTE: If the environmental humidity is low, it will not exceed the 500ml water level. Duration will vary depending on temperature and humidity).
  • EASY TO USE & STORAGE: No assembly is required. Each closet moisture absorber is stored in a separate bag for easy use and long-term storage. These can be hung anywhere for physical dehumidification. These dehumidifier bags feature an easy-to-hang hook, taking up just a little space in your room.
  • WIDE APPLICATION: Our safe moisture absorber bags are suitable for most enclosed spaces, such as basements, kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms, warehouses, and caravans. All you need to do is remove the outer plastic bag and hang it in the damp space where excess moisture is an issue. Then, you can enjoy a dry and comfortable indoor environment for a long time. Do NOT place near valuables.
  • How It Works: When using moisture absorber bags, the white calcium chloride dissolves and forms a whole piece, leading to water droplets appearing in 3-5 days. As dehumidification continues, more water will collect in the catchment area. In high humidity, the white calcium chloride will dissolve into pieces and become liquid in a short time (about 3-7 days). In low humidity, transparent crystals may form in storage areas. Initial solidification of the dehumidifier can occur, but it will absorb moisture over time, turning into liquid.

Keep uncontaminated clothing and household members away from the work area. Set aside bags or containers for items that need washing or disposal, and avoid shaking moldy fabrics in the closet. If opening a door or window would spread dust into another occupied area, ventilate in the safest practical direction and seek advice for larger or concealed contamination.

Step 4: Clean mold from hard closet surfaces

Hard, non-porous surfaces such as finished shelving, sealed trim or other washable materials can generally be cleaned with water and detergent, followed by complete drying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove loose contents first. Keep clean items away from the work area.
  2. Wash the surface with water and detergent. Scrub until visible growth and residue are removed, following the product label.
  3. Rinse only as the label directs. Avoid spreading dirty solution onto adjacent surfaces.
  4. Dry immediately and completely. Use clean towels, fans or a dehumidifier as appropriate.
  5. Reinspect after drying. Staining may remain after mold is removed; do not assume every stain is active growth, but investigate if odor or dampness persists.

Do not combine detergent with bleach, ammonia or another cleaner. If a surface is damaged, crumbling, repeatedly wet or inaccessible, stop and obtain an assessment rather than scrubbing indefinitely.

Work from cleaner areas toward more affected areas so you do not carry dirty solution across the closet. Change or rinse cleaning materials as directed by the product label, and keep cleaned surfaces separate from items still awaiting inspection. A remaining discoloration may be permanent staining; an odor that remains with dampness, fresh growth or soft material indicates that more investigation is needed.

Step 5: Treat clothing and other porous contents

Fabric, cardboard, unfinished wood, upholstery and similar porous materials can absorb moisture and allow mold to grow into their fibers or pores. Complete removal may be difficult or impossible.

Washable clothing and linens

  1. Separate visibly affected or strongly odorous items from clean laundry.
  2. Follow the garment’s care instructions and wash with the hottest appropriate water and detergent.
  3. Dry the item thoroughly before judging whether the odor is gone. A partially damp garment can make a clean closet smell musty again.
  4. Keep successfully cleaned items in a dry, ventilated place until the closet itself has been cleaned and dried.

Do not return an item merely because its surface looks clean. If mold or odor remains after appropriate cleaning and drying, the material may not be recoverable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shoes, bags, cardboard and other porous goods

Inspect each item separately. Cleanable materials should be treated according to their care requirements and dried fully. Discard porous items that remain moldy, cannot be cleaned without damage, or cannot be dried completely. For valuable, sentimental or delicate belongings, consult a specialist before using a household cleaner.

Cardboard boxes are especially difficult to clean once they are moldy because growth can penetrate the fibers. Do not move a visibly affected box into another closet or storage room. Bag or otherwise contain it for disposal according to local requirements, or ask a professional how to handle it.

The common “mold smell in clothes” question

If clothes smell unusual after storage, first determine whether the closet, hamper, footwear or another nearby porous item is the source. Laundering the clothing without correcting a damp closet can produce a short-lived improvement followed by the same odor.

When to stop trying to save an item

Cleaning is not successful if an item remains visibly moldy, retains a strong odor after appropriate washing and complete drying, or cannot be dried without trapping more moisture. Replacement is often more practical for inexpensive porous goods. For valuable belongings, a restoration or conservation specialist can advise whether controlled cleaning is possible.

Step 6: Dry and air the closet

Open the closet door and, when practical and safe, windows or doors to the surrounding room. Fans can move air across cleaned surfaces; a dehumidifier can lower moisture in the room. Do not close the space until shelves, walls, floors and contents are dry.

The EPA advises cleaning and drying damp building materials and furnishings within 24–48 hours where possible to help prevent mold growth. This is a target for prompt action, not a guarantee that every material will be dry by the end of that period. Hidden or absorbent materials may require longer drying or professional equipment.

Position fans so they support drying without blowing debris toward clean rooms or people. Empty a dehumidifier tank safely, keep air inlets and filters maintained, and follow the manufacturer’s clearance instructions. If the closet has no practical airflow and remains damp, improve ventilation in the surrounding room rather than sealing the door shut.

Step 7: Control indoor humidity

Humidity control reduces the chance that a cleaned closet will become damp again. The agencies cited below use slightly different wording, so treat the figures as practical indoor targets rather than a closet-specific legal limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Guidance Published target How to use it
EPA, “What Are Ten Things I Need to Know About Mold?” 30–60% relative humidity A range intended to decrease mold growth.
EPA, “Mold Course Chapter 9” Below 60%, ideally 30–50% if possible A more specific preferred range when conditions allow.
CDC prevention guidance No higher than 50% A conservative upper limit for indoor humidity control.

Use a humidity meter in the room where the closet is located. Place it where it can sample room air rather than inside a tightly packed box. A meter shows humidity; it does not detect mold, identify a leak or prove that a wall cavity is dry.

Check readings at different times if the odor follows showers, cooking, storms or heating and cooling cycles. A single comfortable reading does not rule out short periods of condensation. The goal is to understand the room’s conditions and correct the moisture source, not to use a meter as a mold test.

Should you use a dehumidifier or odor absorber?

A dehumidifier can help when the surrounding room remains humid after leaks and other water sources have been corrected. It is not a substitute for repairing water entry and does not remove mold embedded in materials.

Selection factor What to check
Room suitability Choose capacity for the surrounding room, not an assumption that every closet needs a dedicated unit.
Drainage Compare tank capacity and whether continuous drainage is practical and safe.
Noise and placement Allow the manufacturer’s clearance and consider whether operating noise is acceptable near living areas.
Maintenance Plan for filter cleaning, tank emptying and inspection for dust or standing water.
Odor absorbers and fragrance Use only as optional odor management after the moisture and mold problem is resolved; they do not clean contaminated materials.

A humidity monitor and a dehumidifier serve different purposes: the monitor measures room humidity, while the dehumidifier changes it. Neither locates a hidden leak or confirms that mold has been removed. Select equipment for the room around the closet, and follow its operating and maintenance instructions.

When a homeowner can clean—and when to call a professional

EPA residential guidance says homeowners can often handle a moldy area under about 10 square feet, roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch. That is general guidance, not a closet-specific safety boundary. The condition of the materials, access, water damage and occupants’ health can make a smaller job inappropriate for DIY work.

Situation Recommended response
Small, visible growth on accessible hard surfaces; moisture source identified and repaired Follow protective, ventilated cleaning and dry completely.
Growth larger than about 10 square feet Consult professional remediation guidance before proceeding.
Significant water damage, saturated materials or suspected contaminated insulation Arrange qualified assessment and remediation advice.
Persistent odor with no visible source Investigate concealed building materials, plumbing and exterior water entry; obtain an assessment if the source cannot be safely located.
Occupant has asthma, chronic lung disease, immune suppression or another relevant health concern Seek clinical or professional advice before cleanup.
Valuable porous belongings Ask a restoration or conservation specialist before cleaning or discarding.

Do not treat the 10-square-foot figure as permission to disturb hidden materials, climb into unsafe spaces or work around extensive water damage. A qualified assessor can determine whether moisture has reached cavities or insulation and can recommend containment and drying methods.

Troubleshoot a smell that returns

The odor returns within days

Recheck humidity, recently cleaned surfaces and items that were returned before they were fully dry. Look behind shelving and along wall and floor joints. A recurring smell usually means moisture or a contaminated porous item remains.

The closet looks clean but still smells

Remove everything again and inspect adjacent rooms, shared plumbing walls, the ceiling above and the floor below. Consider concealed mold or damp building materials. Do not solve an unexplained odor by sealing the closet or adding fragrance.

Only one group of items smells

Isolate that group and inspect the container, hamper, shoes or nearby floor area. Clean and dry recoverable items; replace porous items that remain moldy or cannot be dried completely.

Humidity stays high after cleanup

Measure the surrounding room, improve air movement and evaluate a correctly sized dehumidifier. If readings remain high, look for an ongoing leak, condensation or ventilation problem rather than increasing fragrance use.

There is staining but no current dampness

Staining can remain after a past event, but it deserves context. Check whether the area becomes damp after rain or plumbing use, whether the odor changes with humidity, and whether materials are soft or deteriorating. If you cannot establish that the source was corrected, obtain an assessment.

Keep the closet from becoming musty again

  • Return belongings only when the closet and items are fully dry.
  • Leave enough clearance for air to move around walls, floors and stored goods.
  • Keep damp laundry, towels and shoes out of closed storage until dry.
  • Check for new staining, condensation or odor after leaks, storms or plumbing work.
  • Use a humidity meter to verify room conditions instead of guessing.
  • Address water entry promptly; drying and cleaning are easier before materials remain wet.
  • Reinspect the closet after cleanup and again if the odor changes or returns.
  • Do not use paint, caulk or fragrance to conceal unresolved moisture or mold.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Can you identify and stop the moisture source? If not, pause cosmetic cleaning and investigate plumbing, exterior water entry, condensation or hidden materials.
  2. Is the affected area small, visible and accessible? If growth is extensive, materials are saturated or access is unsafe, seek professional guidance.
  3. Are the surfaces hard and washable? Clean with water and detergent, then dry completely. Porous materials require an item-by-item decision about cleaning, drying or replacement.
  4. Are people at increased health risk? Obtain clinical or professional advice before disturbing mold.
  5. Does the odor persist after drying? Reinspect hidden areas and adjacent construction rather than masking the smell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an air freshener remove a musty closet smell?

It may mask the odor briefly but does not correct moisture, remove mold or clean contaminated materials. Find and fix the source first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the closet smells musty but I cannot see mold?

Empty the closet and inspect behind stored items, along joints, nearby plumbing, exterior walls and the ceiling or floor around it. Persistent odor can indicate concealed damp materials and may require an assessment.

How quickly should wet closet materials be dried?

The EPA advises cleaning and drying damp building materials and furnishings within 24–48 hours where possible to help prevent mold growth. Absorbent or hidden materials may need longer or professional equipment.

Can I clean closet mold with bleach?

Use products only as their labels direct, and never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner. For hard surfaces, water and detergent followed by complete drying are the basic agency-supported steps.

Should moldy clothes be thrown away?

Washable items may be recoverable when cleaned according to their care instructions and dried completely. Porous items that remain moldy, cannot be cleaned safely or cannot be dried fully may need replacement; ask a specialist about valuable belongings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What humidity should I keep around a closet?

EPA guidance gives 30–60% relative humidity, with 30–50% preferred when possible; CDC prevention guidance says no higher than 50%. These are indoor targets, not a closet-specific legal limit.

Do I need a dehumidifier inside the closet?

Not necessarily. A dehumidifier may help the surrounding room after leaks and other water sources are corrected. Choose capacity, drainage, noise and maintenance features for the room, and do not use it as a substitute for repairs.

When is a musty closet a professional job?

Seek guidance for growth larger than about 10 square feet, significant water damage, saturated or concealed materials, a persistent unexplained odor, unsafe access, or occupants with asthma, chronic lung disease, immune suppression or other health concerns.

Why does the smell return after I wash the clothes?

The closet, hamper, shoes or another porous item may still be damp or contaminated. Isolate the items, inspect the closet and correct moisture before returning anything.
