Separate the book from unaffected items and address the damp conditions first. Don’t brush or vacuum mold that is wet, fuzzy, or slimy: disturbing active growth can spread or smear it. Once loose growth is dry and powdery, careful outdoor brushing or a HEPA-filtered vacuum may remove some surface mold. Valuable, delicate, or extensively affected books should go to a book and paper conservator.
First decide whether the book is wet, actively moldy, or dry
A musty smell by itself does not establish that mold is actively growing. If you can see growth, its condition helps determine what to do next. The U.S. National Archives distinguishes active mold, which may look fuzzy or slimy, from dormant mold, which is dry and powdery. Its guidance warns against removing active growth because it may spread or smear. National Archives mold guidance (last reviewed August 15, 2016).
- Wet, fuzzy, or slimy growth: Don’t brush, wipe, or vacuum it. Isolate the book and seek qualified help if the affected area is substantial or the book matters to you.
- Dry, powdery growth: Limited removal of loose surface material may be possible, with care and appropriate precautions.
- Newly wet book: Start air-drying it promptly if feasible. If you cannot air-dry a newly wet or moldy book within two days, the Library of Congress advises preparing and freezing it. Freezing stabilizes the book; it does not kill mold. See its guidance for wet or moldy books.
Isolate the book and correct the moisture problem
Move the affected book away from unaffected books so you do not spread loose material among them. Keep it in a cool, dry place with air circulation. The National Archives identifies high temperature, high relative humidity, and low air circulation as conditions that support mold growth. Before returning the book to a shelf, address the dampness that caused the problem, such as a leak or persistently humid storage area. Don’t seal a damp book into long-term storage.
If the book is wet, the Library of Congress recommends air-drying books immediately while controlling temperature and relative humidity. If prompt drying is not possible within two days, follow its advice to prepare and freeze the book rather than leaving it wet. Freezing is a temporary stabilizing measure, not a cleaning or mold-killing treatment.

Remove only loose, dry surface mold—and know when to stop
For a replaceable book with limited, dry, powdery surface growth, the National Archives says loose material may be gently brushed away. Work outdoors, or use a HEPA-filtered vacuum so captured material is not exhausted back into the room. A regular vacuum may recirculate mold. Surface removal will not erase mold stains; UK National Archives remediation guidance notes that cleaning does not remove staining. UK National Archives mold remediation guidance.
Do not treat this as a routine household cleaning job if the book is rare, valuable, delicate, or extensively affected. Contact a book and paper conservator; the National Archives points readers to the American Institute for Conservation’s conservator referral service. Mold can affect health, and people differ in sensitivity. Stop treatment if you experience any negative health effect, however minor. For extensive growth or uncertain working conditions, leave remediation to a conservation professional or qualified recovery service rather than assuming a light mask makes cleanup safe.

Keep mold from coming back
Prevention depends on controlling the storage environment, not on repeatedly cleaning the book. Keep the area cool and dry, improve air circulation, and correct leaks or other sources of moisture. Check previously affected books over time, especially if stains remain.
For books with mold stains, the Library of Congress gives a relative-humidity range of 40–65% and advises checking regularly for regrowth. That recommendation is specific to its guidance for stained books, not a universal target for every building or collection. Its separate musty-odor advice gives a different range, 35–55% relative humidity; the two figures address different concerns and should not be treated as interchangeable. Consult the relevant Library of Congress book guidance for the context of each recommendation.

- HOW THEY WORK: The upper layer of the moisture remover box is filled with high-quality calcium chloride particles. After combining with moisture, the particles will gradually cling together and then liquefy. The liquid will flow down to the bottom layer finally. Please be patient with the process, it may take some time to function.
Reduce a musty smell separately from mold removal
Odor treatment is not mold remediation. The Library of Congress says cool storage, air circulation, and time can reduce musty odor. For a hardcover, stand the book slightly open; for a large or limp book, lay it partly open and turn the pages over several days. Keep it away from damp conditions and check for new growth while it airs.
As an optional odor-control measure, place activated charcoal or baking soda in a closed container with the book, making sure the material never touches the book. Check the book frequently for mold. Neither charcoal nor baking soda removes mold. Brief sun exposure is mentioned by the Library of Congress only where fading, discoloration, or yellowing is acceptable, so it is not a default cleaning method.
